A
Here are the new books we’re looking forward to this fall:
Lovely One: A Memoir by Ketanji Brown Jackson (Sept. 3)
America’s first Black female Supreme Court justice (法官) writes a memoir describing her early childhood, and the difficulties she faced coming up in the legal world.
We’re Alone: Essays by Edwidge Danticat (Sept. 3)
This essay collection finds Danticat looking back at her native country of Haiti. Not with the naive rose-colored glasses of nostalgia, but with full awareness of the complicated nature of “resilience” and the mixed feelings anyone has about where they came from.
Reagan: His Life and Legend by Max Boot (Sept. 10)
For the person in your life obsessed with presidential biographies, Boot’s newest book is a deeply reported look into the life of Ronald Reagan. Covering his childhood, his Hollywood years and, of course, his presidency, Boot describes a man that is somehow both more ideological and more pragmatic than we might think.
High and Rising: A Book About De La Soul by Marcus J. Moore (Nov. 19)
It’s been a little over a year now since the influential hip hop group De La Soul made its way onto streaming platforms, which means we’re overdue for a big book about them. Music writer Marcus J. Moore tells the story of what made this band work, re-contextualizing them for old heads and introducing them to new listeners alike.
21. How many new books will be available to readers by this October?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
22. Which book will you refer to if you explore a president’s personal life?

Our lives are measured by the passing years and shaped by major milestones such as graduating from school, getting jobs, getting married and having children. Sometimes, however, it’s the little things that we find play an important role. Often we don’t even notice them until they change or we suddenly don’t have them anymore.
My wife and I live on the top floor of an apartment. Looking out of the bedroom window, there were no buildings as high as ours and, as a result, we never had to close our curtains at night. If I was awake in bed at night, I could look up and see the stars. I would wonder if there were planets revolving around them, and were any of those planets like ours. I’ll probably never know the answers but the questions themselves intrigue me.
Last summer, the neighbors sold the little house next door and it was bought by a developer to build a new apartment building. It will be four floors tall, the same as ours. When the new building is ready for new residents, we have to start closing our curtains at night.
Perhaps I will be able to wait until everyone else is likely to be sleeping and reopen my curtains. That’s one possible course but I really doubt we’ll do this. More likely we will close the curtains before going to bed and not reopen them until morning. That means that when I wake up in the middle of the night as usual, the room will be dark and there will be nothing to see, no view out the window of the beautiful night sky and no interesting questions to think about.
I’m sure the night sky is filled with wonders we may never actually see and probably can’t even imagine. With that mind-set I have enjoyed lying in bed in the small hours of the night and looking at the heavens and wondering. Our little town is growing as it unavoidably would but I’m going to miss the stars.
Sometimes, it’s the little things.
24. What does the underlined word “intrigue” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Trick. B. Interest. C. Shock. D. Escape.
25. What may the author do when the new building is ready for use?
A. Plan to move out of the town.
B. Communicate with neighbors.
C. Keep the curtains closed when sleeping.
D. Appreciate the appealing night sky as usual.
26. What does the author think of the development of the little town?
A. Destructive. B. Understandable. C. Beneficial. D. Meaningless.
27. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To arouse readers’ interest in the star observation.
B. To state the inconvenience of living on the top floor.
C. To remind the readers of the significance of little things.
D. To complain about the damage of building construction.
B 25. C 26. B 27. C

根据画线词的上文“If I was awake in bed at night, I could look up and see the stars. I would wonder if there were planets revolving around them, and were any of those planets like ours. I’ll probably never know the answers
根据第四段中“More likely we will close the curtains before going to bed and not reopen them until morning. (我们更有可能在睡觉前把窗帘拉上,直到早上才重新打开)”可知,作者会在睡觉时把窗帘拉上。故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“Our little town is growing as it unavoidably would but I’m going to miss the stars.
再结合第一段中“Sometimes, however, it’s the little things that we find play an important role. Often we don’t even notice them until they change or we suddenly don’t have them anymore. (然而,有时候,我们发现一些小事情起着重要的作用。通常我们甚至没有注意到它们,直到它们改变或者我们突然不再拥有它们)”和最后一段“Sometimes, it’s the little things. (有时候,是一些小事情)”可推知,文章的目的在于提醒读者小事情的重要性。故选C项。
C
My roommate Lily was well organised, while I was not. Each of her things had its place, but mine were always hidden somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签于) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Lily got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Lily came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming. “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Lily answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy (同情) rose up in my heart.
Slowly. I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so lost in my work that I even didn’t notice Lily had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression a kind of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”
Lily and I stayed roommates for the rest of the college years. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together, giving in, cleaning up and holding on.
28. How is Paragraph 1 mainly developed?
A. By analyzing causes. B. By giving some examples.
C. By showing the difference. D. By describing a process.
29. What made Lily so angry one evening?
A. She heard the author shouting loud. B. She saw the author’s shoes under her bed.
C. She got the news that her grandma was ill. D. She couldn’t find her books anymore.
30. Why did the author clean up the room?
A. Because she wanted to show her care for Lily. B. Because she hated herself for being so messy.
C. Because Lily required her to do so. D. Because she was scared by Lily’s anger.
31. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Hard Work Pays Off B. Learning to Be Roommates
C. My Friend Lily D. How to Be Organised?
C 29. B 30. A 31. B
根据第一段中“My roommate Lily was well organised, while I was not. Each of her things had its place, but mine were always hidden somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签于) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Lily got neater and I got messier.
根据第二段中“Soon, I heard her screaming. ‘Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!’ (很快,我听到她尖叫:‘把你的鞋拿走!为什么会在我的床下!’)”可知,让Lily发怒的是她看见作者的鞋子在她的床下面,故选B。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy (同情) rose up in my heart. (显然,这是她不应该独自经历的事情。突然间,一股温暖的同情之情在我心中升起。)”可知,作者打扫房间是因为她同情Lily,想要表达自己对她的关心,故选A。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容及最后一段中“We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together, giving in, cleaning up and holding on. (我们并不总是一致,但我们学会了共同生活的关键,学会妥协、整理和坚持。)”可知,本文主要讲述了作者与自己的室友Lily的生活习惯很不相同,后来她们两个人之间发生的一场冲突让作者学会了关心室友,学会了如何与室友相处,因此最好的标题应该是B选项“Learning to Be Roommates (学会做室友)”,故选B。
D
Chinese material scientists have found the soil on the moon may potentially be able to generate oxygen and fuel, a finding that means more possibilities of humans to use lunar resources to further exploration of the moon and beyond.
The researchers at Nanjing University showed that the lunar sample brought back by China’s Chang’e-5 contains active compounds (化合物) that can change carbon dioxide into oxygen and fuel. Initially, they hoped to design a system that took advantage of lunar soil and solar radiation, the two rich resources on the moon, according to a study published on Thursday in the journal Joule.
After analyzing the Chang’e-5’s lunar soil, the team found the sample contained metal- rich substances, which could work as a catalyst (催化剂) to make oxygen using sunlight and carbon dioxide. The team proposed a strategy using lunar soil to electrolyze water from the moon and the astronauts’ life support system into oxygen and hydrogen. The process was powered by sunlight. The carbon dioxide breathed out by moon inhabitants can be collected and combined with hydrogen to produce the fuel, also catalyzed by the lunar soil, according to the study. The researchers said with this method, no external energy apart from sunlight would be used to produce oxygen and fuel to support life on a moon base.
“We use the environmental resources to minimize rocket payload, and our strategy provides a scenario for a sustainable and affordable living environment for life out of the Earth,” said the paper’s first author Yao Yingfang from Nanjing University, expressing his assumption.
“The challenge lies in the fact that catalytic efficiency of lunar soil is lower than catalysts on the Earth,” said the researchers. They are testing different approaches in order to improve the design. The team is looking for an opportunity to test the system in space with China’s future manned lunar missions.
32. What is the main implication of Chinese scientists’ discovery of the moon’s soil?
A. The moon is rich in rare elements. B. Lunar soil can be used for exploring space.
C. The moon can be lived on by humans. D. Lunar soil is a new renewable energy source.
33. What did the researchers work on according to paragraph 3?
A. The process of the sun producing light.
B. The analysis of China’s Chang’e-5’s work.
C. The supportive method producing metal-rich substances.
D. The sustainable living strategy employing lunar resources.
34. What does the underlined word “scenario” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Contract. B. Profession. C. Possibility. D. Sponsor.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. The discovery of active compounds on the moon.
B. The testing approaches to improving the lunar soil.
C. The research on the environmental system of the moon.
D. The study of using lunar soil for oxygen and fuel production.
B 33. D 34. C 35. D

根据第三段的“The team proposed a strategy using lunar soil to electrolyze water from the moon and the astronauts’ life support system into oxygen and hydrogen. The process was powered by sunlight. The carbon dioxide breathed out by moon inhabitants can be collected and combined with hydrogen to produce the fuel, also catalyzed by the lunar soil, according to the study.(该团队提出了一种策略,利用月球土壤将月球和宇航员生命维持系统中的水电解成氧气和氢气。这个过程是由阳光驱动的。根据这项研究,月球居民呼出的二氧化碳可以被收集起来,并与氢结合来生产燃料,也可以由月球土壤催化。) ”可知,研究人员利用月球资源进行可持续生存策略的研究。故选D。
【34题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段的“The researchers said with this method, no external energy apart from sunlight would be used to produce oxygen and fuel to support life on a moon base.
根据第一段的“Chinese material scientists have found the soil on the moon may potentially be able to generate oxygen and fuel, a finding that means more possibilities of humans to use lunar resources to further exploration of the moon and beyond.(中国材料科学家发现,月球上的土壤可能能够产生氧气和燃料,这一发现意味着人类利用月球资源进一步探索月球及其他地方的可能性更大。)”和第二段的“The researchers at Nanjing University showed that the lunar sample brought back by China’s Chang’e- 5 contains active compounds (化合物) that can change carbon dioxide into oxygen and fuel. 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了导致游泳发生危险的原因以及游泳技能的好处。
【36题详解】
根据上文“Every summer holiday, there are always many drowning accidents. Especially, swimming in the wild is extremely dangerous.(每年暑假,总有很多溺水事故。特别是,在野外游泳是非常危险的)”可知,上文提到野外游泳非常危险;C选项“Most accidents happen right there.(大多数事故都发生在那里)”承接上文,指出大多数事故都发生在野外,符合语境;选项中的there指上文in the wildwild。故选C。
【37题详解】
根据上文“The main reason is that people who can’t swim have a fear of water and(主要原因是不会游泳的人有恐水症)”可知,上文提到不会游泳的怕水,说明这类人不会主动靠近水域。
根据上文“The main reason is that people who can’t swim have a fear of water(主要原因是不会游泳的人有恐水症)”、“But the person that can swim is otherwise.(但会游泳的人则不然)”以及后文“and likes to enter water(喜欢进入水里)”可知,会游泳的人喜欢进入水里,不怕水。
根据后文“Don’t make the mistake of thinking that drowning deaths are mostly swimmers. The truth is that the vast majority of accidental drowning are those who cannot swim. An extra skill will give you an extra chance to save yourself in the event of an accident.(不要错误地认为溺水死亡的大多是游泳者。事实是,绝大多数意外溺水者都是不会游泳的人。一项额外的技能会让你在发生事故时有更多的机会自救)”可知,后文提到一项额外的技能会让你在发生事故时有更多的机会自救,推测学习游泳并不是没有用处的,可以自救。故F选项“然而,我们不能因此就认为学游泳没用”符合语境,故选F。
【40题详解】
设空处为文章结尾句;根据上文“Good advice to prevent drowning(这是防止溺水的好建议)”可知,本句主要说明防止溺水的好建议的具体内容,结合第一段“Every summer holiday, there are always many drowning accidents. Especially, swimming in the wild is extremely dangerous.(每年暑假,总有很多溺水事故。特别是,在野外游泳是非常危险的)”以及倒数第三段中“The truth is that the vast majority of accidental drowning are those who cannot swim. An extra skill will give you an extra chance to save yourself in the event of an accident.(事实是,绝大多数意外溺水者都是不会游泳的人。一项额外的技能会让你在发生事故时有更多的机会自救。)”可知与不要在野外游泳以及学习游泳技能有关,起到总结上文的作用。故E选项“掌握游泳技巧,不要在野外游泳”符合语境,故选E。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段(每段75词左右,共150词左右),使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My name is Andy. I was the new boy in the class. I was twelve when I moved to London. Having lost all my old friends, I felt shy and lonely at my new school.
Most people weren’t very interested in a shy new boy. Colin was one of the few people who were kind to me. He often invited me to join his particular group, and as a result, I started getting to know people. Colin and I became good friends. We trusted each other and we could talk about personal matters, things that were important to us.
Five years later, Colin’s father was knocked over by a car and died a few days later. The family had to move to a much smaller house in order to manage financially. Colin changed completely, becoming silent and moody. He had always been a clever, hard-working student but now he seemed to lose all interest in his work. He started losing friends.
About three months ago, a group of us were playing football together after school. Having left something in the cloakroom, I went inside to get it, finding Colin going through the pockets of people’s coats. In his hand he had a wallet, but it wasn’t his! I just looked at him. Colin went bright red. “I’ll put it back right now,” he said, and he did so. I turned round and walked out without saying a word.
Last week our school had a big fair in order to raise money for a charity. It was very successful and by the end of the day, we had made about £500. Holding the box, our head teacher said with a smile “We have raised £500 here.” But to our surprise, the next morning, we were told that the money had been stolen.
I decided to ask Colin about the theft, and this morning I went to see him. I approached Colin with a heavy heart, knowing that this conversation could be hard. “Colin, I need to ask you something,” I began cautiously. He looked up at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of curiosity and worry. “Did you take the money from the charity fair?” I asked directly, hoping to get a straight answer.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Colin’s face turned pale, unable to meet my eyes.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I could see the pain in his eyes, and despite my disappointment, I couldn’t help but feel empathy (同情) for my friend.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Colin’s face turned pale, unable to meet my eyes. I became very angry, glaring at him with deep disappointment. He went bright red, admitting that he had stolen it in a low voice. I slowly calmed down and hugged him, telling him that I would be willing to help him overcome his difficulty. He wept and then we had a sincere talk face to face. At last we agreed to return the money.
I could see the pain in his eyes, and despite my disappointment, I couldn’t help but feel empathy for my friend. We went to the head teacher Mrs.Smith, together. In the teachers’ office, Roy returned the money to Mrs.Smith, and guaranteed not to do such things again. Though Mrs.Smith was so surprised that she couldn’t believe her eyes, she praised him for his courage and correction and told him if he had difficulty with finance she would be ready to help him. Roy was moved to tears. After that, we became good friends again. We trusted each other and shared sorrow and happiness together.

31. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Hard Work Pays Off B. Learning to Be Roommates
C. My Friend Lily D. How to Be Organised?
