I never thought I'd hear myself say it, but I've grown to enjoy lifting weights, and I've learned from doing it. I enjoy the sense of strength and discipline that comes when the muscles are forced to resist. I've tried varying schedules — lifting every day, every other day, two days on and a day off. The every day approach was the least effective. I get the best strengthening results when I give myself a break.
The same is true with mind and spirit. Without giving yourself a chance to reenergize, you begin to break down all the connective fibers of your life. I used to just give myself Sundays off. Now I'm scheduling downtime in the midst of everything — and “everything” includes two magazines, building a house in Hawaii, working on an ABC movie — and, oh yeah, my day job. Keeping it all straight was beginning to feel a little stressful. So I told myself that just because I have ten free minutes on my calendar doesn't mean I want to fill them. Breathing space has to become part of my daily routine.
So instead of having people lined up outside my office after the first show — I tape two a day — I do nothing for at least ten minutes. The change has worked wonders. I have more energy, and I'm in a better mood for the second show and all the business that comes afterward.
Now that I have the summer off to sit under the trees reading, napping, writing, and thinking , I know for sure it’s time well spent. I’m refilling my tank so that by fall, when the new season begins, I'll be fired up and ready for whatever is to come. Fully restored.
4. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To arouse the readers' concern.
B. To summarize the whole passage.
C. To state the importance of a good lifestyle.
D. To introduce the theme of the whole passage.
5. Which of the following does the author agree with?
A. Keeping everything straight. B. Resting at any time.
C. Taking breaks between tasks. D. Having a full schedule.
6. What does the underlined “it” in Para.2 refer to?
A. Everything. B. Building a house.
C. My day job. D. Working on a movie.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Lifting weights changes peopled life.
B. A little restoration helps go a long way.
C. Why people need to be in high spirits.
D. Ten minutes' break will work wonders.
C
School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, D. C., students are hard at work outdoors. In a garden filled with flowers and beds bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting vegetables for the weekend’s farmers market.
Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a. m. until 2 p. m. with City Blossoms, a nonprofit organization that brings community gardens to schools in urban areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she’s taken those healthy behaviors home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.
City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged. These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed, or to learn the science of how plants grow.
For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their perceptions of where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation conducted by PEER Associates.
8. What does Roshawn Little think of the summer outdoor activity?
A. It is a good way to earn pocket money. B. It has improved her family relationship.
C. It contributes to her healthy eating habit. D. It is helpful to her performance at school.
9. What is the purpose of the school gardens?
A. To promote teachers’ teaching skills. B. To provide a creative way of learning.
C. To get students interested in science. D. To invite students to care for plants.
10. What does the last paragraph focus on about the project of City Blossoms?
A. Its influence. B. Its strategies. C. Its operations. D. Its organizers.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. City Blossoms: Team up with Local Community Teachers
B. Happy Holiday, Sweet Memory: How Kids Enjoy the Harvest
C. Outdoor Classrooms: Get out for the Weekend’s Farmers Market
D. Healthy Eaters, Strong Minds: What School Gardens Teach Kids
D
The way you learn most effectively will impact many different aspects of your life. Visual (视觉的) learners process information best when it’s presented with images drawn on a whiteboard, charts or graphs. Visual learners usually process pictures before they read printed text and are also able to visualize concepts quickly. People who are visual learners would prefer it if instruction is printed rather than given verbally (口头地), and may often write or draw when attempting to make sense of a new topic. Many visual learners remember something better once they’ve written it down or drawn it out.
Auditory (听觉的) learners process information best when it’s said out loud, such as in a lecture setting or spoken presentation. This type of learners can easily recall what others say and prefer to talk through topics they find complex or difficult to understand. People who are auditory learners prefer verbal directions and may use repetition or repeat things aloud to memorize things. They may ask questions to understand the subject matter better and may need to hear something repeated more than once before they fully comprehend. Auditory learners also often benefit from listening to recordings as a method of absorbing new concepts.
Kinesthetic (动觉的) learners process information through experience rather than by being shown or told. This type of learners prefer to do things that are more “hands-on”. They prefer to touch and feel items and can easily recall things they’ve done. People who are kinesthetic learners like to make and create things using their hands, and remember information best when they are physically involved. Kinesthetic learners like to take part in the process by shadowing or assisting (helping) others, and prefer to practice concepts as a way to absorb new information.
Take time to consider how you prefer to take in new information. Think about the last time how you worked to ensure you retained the information. The answers to these questions will help you discover which learning style works best for you.
12. What do visual learners do to form an idea in mind?
A. Visualize or read something. B. Process or present something.
C. Recall or speak. D. Write or draw.
13. Who can underdstand something repeated better?
A. Visual learners. B. Auditory learners.
C. Kinesthetic learners. D. Lifelong learners.
14. What does the underlined word “shadowing” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Listening carefully. B. Memorizing perfectly.
C. Following and watching closely. D. Asking repeatedly.
15. What is author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To help readers explore learning styles.
B. To introduce effective learning methods.
C. To arouse readers’ curiosity about learning.
D. To inform readers of a new scientific study about learning.

Whether you’re heading out for a day trip or a quick weekend getaway (短期休假), we will share some travel tips in this guide to help you make your experience more enjoyable.
·Think about how you want to travel.
___16___ Sometimes it means the most enjoyable. Too much consideration on short journeys is not worth it. If you’ve got a preference for a certain means of transport, it’s often worth traveling that way for short distances, even if it ends up taking you a little longer.
·___17___
Some cities, like NYC, are quite walkable. Others simply aren’t. In Amsterdam, the best way to get about is by bike — whether you use the city’s shared bikes or rent one from your hotel. In Southeast Asia, you’d better rent a scooter (小型摩托车). ___18___ So don’t bother to find the so-called one-size-fits-all answer.
·Try all the available options.
If you’ re not sure about the best means of transport for you, experience them all. See what catching the subway is like, try cycling or riding the bus. It’s hard to predict what will be the most convenient. LA has a low- cost public transport network but car-pooling is cheaper, and scooters are the best for getting around West Hollywood. ___19___
·Don’t rely on map apps.
Map apps are useful, but they don’t take into account the possibility of packed subways, queues for taxis and the heat of a train in summer. ___20___ So don’t assume something is a 30-minute drive just because a map app says so — by the time you’ve driven halfway, you might still have another 30 minutes to go.
A. Don’t limit your choices.
B. It takes time to find the best.
C. Study the city you will travel to.
D. You won’t know until you try them all.
E. What works here might not work there.
F. The best doesn’t necessarily mean the fastest.
G. Besides, they are a bit behind the real traffic time.

Apart from ____36____ (buy) food from take-out stores, consumers can order food at different times and in multiple places ____37____ the help of the network. While we tend to think of take-out food as something originating in the modern era (时代) as a result of our “too busy to prepare my own meal” lifestyle, the ____38____ (true) is quite the opposite.

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。续写的词数应为150左右
If there's one thing I can't stand people saying,it is"I'm no good at anything,I don't have any talent".I just don't buy that at all.To me,everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find,it does exist. There was a time when I didn't believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place in 1953.
At that time I was a high school student.I was a funny-looking skinny boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds.I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned,in just about every other department I was a loser.I wanted to fit in,to be someone and do something well. But I hadn't found anything I was good at.One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school's running track. The teacher taught us all various track and field events.I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin(标枪). Suddenly something inside me began saying,"Try it! Try it!”I had to wait my turn, though, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw-the best throw going about 30 yards-I looked at the teacher.
"Hey,Orowitz,you want to try?"he asked.
Embarrassed,I looked down, but managed to nod my head.
“Well, come on then,"he said impatiently, and handed me the javelin.Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand,I was seized with a strange feeling-a new-found excitement. For some crazy reason,I was relaxed over what I was about to do,even though I'd never done it before.I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go.The same voice that had urged me to throw it,now told me it was a good throw.
Paragraph 1:
I watched as the javelin took off.My heart quickened
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph2:
That night I took the javelin home with me.

It was a great honour for me to attend a recitation contest organized by you themed “Tang Poetry” last week. As a Chinese student, I appreciate foreigners admiring Chinese culture so much.
But I have some opinions about the recitation contest. First, some participants didn’t quite understand the real meaning of the Tang Poetry they recited, so they didn’t put many affections into them. Besides, some characters were wrongly pronounced, which made the lines sound funny.
So I hope later before the contest you should train the participants about the poems. Only when they truly understand them can they make excellent performances.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】Paragraph 1:
I watched as the javelin took off.My heart quickened as I saw it continue to sail,30 yards out, then 40 yards. As it went past the 50-yard mark,it was still going. For a minute nothing was said. Then someone whispered,"Holy cow!"And others began cheering.Nobody could believe what I had just done.I took the javelin back to the gym teacher."You keep the thing."he said, still shaking his head in wonder.
Paragraph 2:
That night I took the javelin home with me.The very next day,I began practicing with it,and every day that summer-for six hours or more-I would throw it in a nearby schoolyard.By the time I was a member of the track team, all my practice paid off.I threw the javelin 211 feet that year, the best throw by any high-school boy in the country.I feel strongly that we must keep our minds open;we can't let ourselves be discouraged or depressed when the talent doesn't readily appear.
