Where does the mermaid(美人鱼) in storybooks come from? Some people think it comes from a real sea animal, the dugong(儒艮).
The dugong is two to three metres long. It has a round head and its tail is a little like a whale’s. It breathes(呼吸) out of the water by “standing” on its tail.
Dugongs live in warm coastal waters of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. They mainly feed on seagrass. They can eat forty to fifty kilograms of seagrass every day. Because of their poor eyesight(视力), dugongs often use smell to find seagrass.

There are fewer dugongs living in the world than before. The main reason is that they can’t find enough seagrass to eat. People put polluted(被污染的) water into the sea, which is bad for seagrass. Activities like sailing and catching fish may make seagrass stop growing. If dugongs can’t get enough to eat, they may give birth to fewer young.
But don’t worry too much. Now scientists are trying to find new ways to save the animal. They hope that we can see more dugongs in the future.
