Zhao Shengliang, the head of the Dunhuang Research Center, gave a talk at Shenzhen Book City CBD Store on December 1, 2024. The talk was about how digital technology (数字技术) can help protect traditional culture.
“Dunhuang connects the Eastern and Western cultures,” Zhao said, “It shows how different cultures exchange ideas. Making the relics (文物) digital is very important because it can keep the old things from Dunhuang safe for always.”
Zhao showed how digital technology is used in Dunhuang’s art projects. For example, in the Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟) Digital Tour Center, tourists can explore the Mogao Grottoes through virtual (虚拟的) tours, where tourists can “travel back” to the caves in ancient times.
According to Zhao, working with Huawei has made the visitor experience at Dunhuang much better. They have brought in an AR map. This map can provide AI-guided tours as well as interesting activities like taking pictures with a virtual (虚拟的) deer.
Dunhuang’s Mogao Grottoes, with ancient art, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although the Digital Dunhuang project has a long way to go, it shows a new idea of protecting cultural relics and helps spread traditional culture across the world.
