In Japan greetings are very formal and respectful. People usually bow when meeting each other. How deep and how long do they bow? That depends on the relationship and status (地位) of the person being greeted. A handshake is also acceptable in business settings, but it is usually light and short, without eye contact.
In India, people often greet each other by saying “Namaste” while pressing their hands together in front of their chest and bowing their head a little. It is both a sign of respect (尊敬) and a way to keep away from each other. In some parts of India, touching the feet of elders is a traditional greeting to show respect and wish for good luck.
We all know French people greet by kissing each other on both cheeks (脸颊) when they meet and before they say goodbye. In Brazil, greetings are warm and friendly too. It’s common to greet with a firm handshake and eye contact. Close friends and family often give each other a hug, or a kiss on the cheek—usually one or two kisses.
1. In which country do people sometimes touch the feet of elders to show respect?
A. In Japan. B. In India. C. In France. D. In Brazil.
2. What is the common topic of the above three texts?
A. Plans of travelling around. B. Fun activities in our daily life.
C. Ideas of making our life better. D. Greeting ways in different cultures.

A new research from Tohoku University shows that wasabi (芥末) is good for people’s memory. Wasabi is something that people usually eat in Japanese dishes. It is made from the wasabi plant, and has always become popular on Japanese menus.
For further information, a recent study tested people between the ages of sixty and eighty. Some of them took a wasabi extract (提取物) every night before going to bed, while the other testers didn’t. After three months, the people who took the wasabi extract did much better in short-term and long-term memory tests, with scores jumped an average of 18%. However, the other people did not show any improvement.
Scientists already know that Wasabi has something different called 6-MSITC. It is infrequent in other plants. The researchers think that 6-MSITC might do good to the hippocampus, the area that works for memory. Scientists say they will do more research, hoping to help people with memory problems.
Wasabi not only improves the taste of dishes and people’s memory, 6-MSITC in Wasabi can also help to keep us away from getting ill and offer many other good things to our health as well.
The new research seems to be good news for sushi-eaters. However, most wasabi in Japan is not real wasabi. Real wasabi is difficult to grow. The plant takes nearly two years to grow up and needs strict temperature, proper sunlight and etc., and, as a result, is very expensive.
3. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Who took part in the test. B. How long the research lasted.
C. Why people took the test. D. How scientists did the research.
4. What does the underlined word “infrequent” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Unusual to see. B. Easy to find. C. Cheap to extract. D. Expensive to buy.
5. What will the writer most probably talk about next?
A. The way people eat wasabi in Japan.
B. The reason why wasabi is hard to get.
C. The places where real wasabi plants grow.
D. The health problems that wasabi can solve.
【答案】3. D 4. A 5. C

【5题详解】

Once there lived an ant and a grasshopper in grassland. All day long the ant would keep collecting grains of wheat (小麦) from the farmer’s field far away. She would hurry to the field every morning, carry a grain of wheat to her house, and then hurry back to the field for another one, without stop or rest.
“Why do you work so hard, dear ant?” the grasshopper would look at her and laugh. “Come, rest a while and listen to my song. Summer is here. Why waste the sunshine in such hard work?”
The ant would just leave him alone and hurry to the field a little faster. This would make the grasshopper laugh even louder. “What a silly little ant you are!” he would call after her gladly.
“Come, come and dance with me! Forget about work! Live a little!”
Summer turned into autumn, and autumn fell into winter. The grasshopper didn’t feel like singing any more. The grassland and the farmer’s field were covered with snow, and there was no food left. “Oh, what shall I do? Where shall I go?” cried the grasshopper. Suddenly he remembered the ant. So off he went to the ant’s house and knocked at her door. “Hello ant!” he cried cheerfully. “Here I am, to sing for you, as I warm myself by your fire, while you get me some food from that larder of yours!”
The ant looked at the grasshopper and said, “All summer long I worked hard while you made fun of me, singing and dancing. You should have thought of winter then! Find somewhere else to sing, grasshopper!” And the ant shut the door in the grasshopper’s face.

In the Internet age, social media (社交媒体) apps have become more and more popular. But Australian researchers have shown their worries — too many teenagers want to use their social media apps to go into a new world.
Their worries mainly come from the sudden increase in “insta-celebrities” (网红) who try to make money by posting photos online. Maybe for the talented and good-looking ones, making money with social media isn’t completely impossible. But is it really a smart choice for you to live and work like that?
Instagram, a famous photo-sharing app, is already full of great social media workers. They can do well in improving online products and services. However, Lauren Roseware, an Australian social scientist, says that in fact, fewer people were able to build their careers (职业生涯) with the apps than we may think.
Although it’s quite difficult, many young Australians still dream of being rich and successful through apps like Instagram. “There are some people who can make a good living with the help of Instagram, but that is not for everyone,” Rosewarne says.
She believes that it is time for parents and schools to stop students from imagining being famous online and bring them back to daily life, because too many people think it is a possible job choice. However, it is not a usual or even real thing.
At the same time, Toni Eager, from Australian National University, thinks spending too much time on social media could also bring social problems. “With so many photos shared online, how can insta-celebrities keep their real life away from the life they show on Instagram?” Eager says. “The truth is, quite easily, people can have your real life.”
9. The Australian researchers feel worried because too many teenagers ________.
A. are using their social media apps B. try to make money with social media
C. are taking and posting photos online D. want to make themselves more beautiful
10. Which of the following would the writer most likely agree with?
A. Being an insta-celebrity is very easy.
B. It’s OK to let others have our real life.
C. Students should learn to face their real life.
D. Most of us can become famous on social media.
11. What could be the best title for this passage?
A. Go for Success Online B. Enjoy Your Social Life
C. Welcome Social Media Time D. Build Your Career Correctly

If you want to experience a new culture, try a trip to a foreign country. It’s best to go with a group that’s small and easy to keep together. If you know your friends prefer to relax by the beach, a trip to a tropical (热带的) place might be the best choice.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s my great honor to be here to share my opinions on Enjoying Cycling. Cycling is really a wonderful activity. First of all, it is a green way of transportation. In Japan, greetings are very formal and respectful.

However most wasabi in Japan is not real wasabi.
A The way people eat wasabi in Japan.
B. The reason why wasabi is hard to get.
C. The places where real wasabi plants grow.
D. The health problems that wasabi can solve.

“Come come and dance with me!

Instagram a famous photo-sharing app, is already full of great social media workers.
