I’m sorry to say that any weekend plans may need to be canceled, whatever they are. We thought the last of the winter snow had fallen, but there is now a severe weather warning from Friday all the way until Tuesday for heavy snowfall, with at least 12 inches predicted to fall on Saturday alone. This will be followed by up to 8 inches on Sunday and another 6 on Monday. The police are urging people only to travel if it’s essential. Temperatures will be extremely low during the snowstorm, with a predicted low of -12℃ on Saturday and a high of -3℃. Because it’s going to be so cold, make sure that your heating is working and run hot water regularly to stop your pipes from freezing and breaking. Have enough supplies to last for 7 to 10 days, as roads are likely to be blocked or closed due to the ice. We have a number of tips and emergency contact details on our website. Until then, please stay safe and remember, do not travel unless it is essential to do so.

It was my birthday, and I was celebrating it as I had for years: Watching the annual Perseid meteor shower (流星雨). But this time, as the meteors flashed across the sky, I, a junior girl, began to question, “Could my lifelong love for astronomy be more than a hobby?”
I grew up in a small town, where even graduating from high school was not a given for many students. But I was driven to pursue my education, and like my best friend’s dad — a pharmacist (药剂师), one of the few professional role models in my neighborhood, therefore, I chose to major in pharmacy, the science of preparing medicines, at the University of North Carolina.
The university was only a 3.5-hour drive away, but it felt across the universe. In the weeks since I began my pharmacy degree, I had met people with jobs and PhDs in different branches of science I had never considered — neuroscience, archaeology, and even astrophysics. Their passion and knowledge opened my eyes to worlds I had never imagined. As my birthday and the Perseid meteor shower approached, I was faced with a decision: Should I stick to my long-standing plans or take a step into the unknown?
Ultimately, a solar eclipse (日食) helped me make my decision. As the Moon gradually shaded the Sun, the world darkened around me. The stillness of the water, the desperate calls of birds, and the fading sunset deeply moved me. I knew what I had to do. I dropped out of pharmacy school to pursue previously unimagined options.
Facing years of challenges and growth, I worked odd jobs before earning a second degree in physics, starting a PhD in astronomy, and realized that the night sky’s vastness inspired me to overcome doubts and follow my dreams. As I approach the final year of my PhD, I realize that growing up with the night sky gave me a valuable gift. It gave me an insight into life: On the scale of our vast universe, our individual needs, desires, fears, and insecurities shrink to insignificance, bringing humanity together. It liberated me from allowing earthly worries, shame, or self-doubt to stand in the way of pursuing new dreams.
24.What motivated the author to major in pharmacy?
A.Her ambition to become a doctor.
B.The encouragement of her friend.
C.Her childhood passion for pharmacy
D.The influence of her best friend’s father.
25.How did the author’s experience at university shape her?
A.It helped her stick to her belief.
B.It opened her mind to new ideas.
C.It enhanced her pharmacy study.
D.It developed her thinking abilities.
26.What can we learn from the author’s understanding of life?
A.Accepting insecurities helps us handle challenges.
B.Personal problems still matter in the vast universe.
C.It’s vital to pursue dreams despite personal challenges.
D.It is small and unimportant things that mean a lot to us.
27.Which of the following best describes the author?
A.Caring and patient. B.Modest and honest.
C.Generous and helpful. D.Curious and determined.

可知,作者遇到了从事不同科学分支工作的人们,这些经历打开了她的眼界,体现了她对新知识和领域的探索欲,作者在生日时观看一年一度的英仙座流星雨,并开始思考自己对天文学的热爱是否可以超越爱好,这显示了她对宇宙的好奇心;结合尾段或者的“Facing years of challenges and growth, I worked odd jobs before earning a second degree in physics, starting a PhD in astronomy, and realized that the night sky’s vastness inspired me to overcome doubts and follow my dreams.(面对多年的挑战与成长,我在获得第二个学位——物理学学位之前做过各种临时工作,随后开始了天文学的博士学位学习,并意识到夜空的广袤激励我克服了疑虑,追随自己的梦想。)”
C
The first thing most of us do when working with people from a new culture is to learn about differences. And there are very sensible reasons to do so. It helps you avoid cultural misunderstandings. But focusing on differences alone can have its downsides. For one thing, there’s a likely chance you’ll be wrong. Focusing on differences can also be quite mentally taxing. So, if you don’t focus on differences, what then can you do to be more effective across cultures? In our experience, an equally reasonable and highly effective alternative technique is to focus on similarities. And this change in perspective can have some pretty powerful effects.
If you think about it, this is probably exactly how you establish connections and relationships in your own culture. You don’t approach a person thinking about all the potential ways you could be different; instead, you naturally gravitate to similarities, finding things you might have in common to form the basis of a relationship. Although we tend to approach cross-cultural interactions quite differently, the same technique actually works just as well across cultures. When focused on similarities, you’re open to — and, in fact, looking for — a potential connection. Perhaps it’s a hobby you share in common with a coworker, or maybe both of you at a business meeting abroad have families you’re trying to connect with. By focusing on similarities you have the power to create connections and build relationships that either eliminate cultural differences or make them irrelevant.
Another advantage of this approach is that your coworkers are more likely to feel that you see them as an individual. On the other hand, focusing on similarities means you are suited to the particularities of the specific person you are interacting with. This is more likely to result in the other party feeling seen and heard for who they are, and can kick off a positive lift of mutual (相互的) openness and trust.
28.Why do people focus on differences in a multicultural company?
A.To emphasize their own culture. B.To reduce unnecessary troubles.
C.To take advantage of other culture. D.To make the workplace multicultural.
29.What’s the significance of focusing on similarities in a multicultural company?
A.The origin of the hobbies. B.The start of work efficiency.
C.The foundation of connections. D.The improvement of your family.
30.What does the underlined word “eliminate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Maintain. B.Strengthen. C.Remove. D.Worsen.
31.Which is the advantage of focusing on similarities in the last paragraph?
A.Making others feel valued. B.Making yourself centred.
C.Indicating your interest. D.Making others adapt to your culture.
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.C 31.A
根据第一段“The first thing most of us do when working with people from a new culture is to learn about differences. And there are very sensible reasons to do so. It helps you avoid cultural misunderstandings.(当我们与来自新文化的人合作时,我们大多数人做的第一件事就是了解差异。这样做有一些非常明智的理由。它有助于你避免文化误解。)”可知,在多元文化公司中,人们关注差异是为了减少不必要的麻烦。故选B。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段“You don’t approach a person thinking about all the potential ways you could be different; instead, you naturally gravitate to similarities, finding things you might have in common to form the basis of a relationship.(当你接近一个人时,你不会思考你们所有可能不同的地方;相反,你会自然地被相似性所吸引,找到你们可能共有的东西,以此作为关系的基础。)”
根据划线词句上文“You don’t approach a person thinking about all the potential ways you could be different; instead, you naturally gravitate to similarities, finding things you might have in common to form the basis of a relationship.(你不会在接近一个人时就去想你们之间所有可能的不同之处;相反,你会自然而然地被相似之处所吸引,寻找你们可能共有的东西,作为建立关系的基础。)”
根据最后一段“Another advantage of this approach is that your coworkers are more likely to feel that you see them as an individual.(这种方法的另一个优点是,你的同事更有可能觉得你把他们当作个体来看待。)” 故选A。
D
In a stimulating interview with the philosopher Daniel Dennett in Living on Earth, Dannet shared that Charles Darwin and Alan Turing might make the same discovery. Darwin showed how you can get the appearance of purpose and design out of blind processes of natural selection. And Turing said that any computable problem can be computed by a machine without understanding.
The host then voiced a concern: as Al advances, machines will come to lord over us. Dennett acknowledges there’s a takeover risk but claims it’s misunderstood. The risk is not that machines will become autonomous rulers but that we will depend too much on machines.
The main issue with AI is not intelligence but autonomy. At the end of the day, even the smartest computers are our tools, and their intentions are ours. Or, to the extent that we can speak of their intentions at all. The intention of a self-driving car to avoid an obstacle, for example, is what it’s designed for.
Our growing dependence on technologies doesn’t mean we are losing our natural autonomy in quite this sense. Our needs remain. But it is a loss of autonomy. Even auto mechanics these days rely on computers and, in the era of self-driving cars, will any of us still know how to drive? Think what would happen if we lost electricity? We’d be thrown back into the 19th century, as Dennett says. But things would be worse as we lack know-how that made it possible for our ancestors to live well in the olden days.
The truth is, we’ve been technological since our dawn as a species. We first found ourselves in the archaeological record where we saw a great exposition of tools, technologies, art-making and language. In a sense, being human means being like a cyborg, which is a technological extension of our natural selves. This suggests that at any time in our development, a large-scale breakdown in the technological system would spell not exactly our doom, but our complete reorganization.
Perhaps what makes our current dilemma unprecedented (史无前例的) is the fact that we are so closely networked. When the library of Alexandria burned down, books and knowledge were lost. But in a world where libraries are replaced by their online versions, it isn’t unimaginable that every library could be sinply deleted.
What happens to us then?
32.Which of the following statements might Dennet most likely agree with?
A.AI might be overly relied on.
B.AI doesn’t have comprehension.
C.AI’s development is bounded.
D.AI’s evolution resembles natural selection.
33.Which of the following examples best matches the idea of “know-how” in paragraph 4?
A.A scholar studies the theory of natural selection.
B.A nobleman hires servants to do all the housework.
C.A farmer builds a table by hand using traditional tools.
D.A worker operates a machine following preset instructions.
34.Why did the author mention libraries in paragraph 6?
A.To show the technological stability.
B.To prove the technological safeguard.
C.To emphasize the technological weakness.
D.To illustrate the technological transformation.
35.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Is the Concern Artificial Intelligence or Autonomy?
B.How will Technology Breakdown Change Our Lives?
C.Will Artificial Autonomy Threaten Humanity’s Existence?
D.How does the Human-Technology Relationship Develop?
【答案】32.A 33.C 34.C 35.A
根据第二段“Dennett acknowledges there’s a takeover risk but claims it’s misunderstood. The risk is not that machines will become autonomous rulers but that we will depend too much on machines.(Dennett承认存在被取代的风险,但他认为这种风险被误解了。风险不在于机器会成为自主统治者,而在于我们会过度依赖机器。)”可知,Dennet最有可能同意的说法是人工智能可能会被过度依赖。故选A。
根据第四段“Think what would happen if we lost electricity? We’d be thrown back into the 19th century, as Dennett says. But things would be worse as we lack know-how that made it possible for our ancestors to live well in the olden days.(想想如果我们断电会发生什么?正如丹尼特所说,我们会被抛回19世纪。但事情会变得更糟,因为我们缺乏使我们的祖先在过去的日子里生活得很好的技术。)”可知,“know-how”的技术是使我们的祖先在过去的日子里生活得很好的技术,符合“know-how”的概念的是一位农民用传统工具手工制作一张桌子。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Perhaps what makes our current dilemma unprecedented (史无前例的) is the fact that we are so closely networked.(也许我们目前的困境之所以前所未有,是因为我们是如此紧密地联系在一起。)”和“But in a world where libraries are replaced by their online versions, it isn’t unimaginable that every library could be sinply deleted.(但在一个图书馆被其在线版本所取代的世界里,想象一下,所有的图书馆都可能被轻易删除,这并不是不可想象的。)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段“The host then voiced a concern: as Al advances, machines will come to lord over us.(主持人随后表达了担忧:随着人工智能的发展,机器将主宰我们。)”和第三段“The main issue with AI is not intelligence but autonomy.(人工智能的主要问题不是智能,而是自主性。)” 故选A。
Whether a friend has broken up with their long-term partner, a colleague is losing his job, or a loved one has been diagnosed with a health condition, there are times when people share difficult news with us. We may be unsure about how best to help or feel awkward and uncomfortable. 36 Show you care
Ruth, a psychologist at Stony Brook University, recommends trying to find somewhere quiet to have the conversation if possible. 37 “Good eye contact and relaxed non-verbal cues, such as leaning forward slightly, nodding and using appropriate facial expressions that convey warmth and empathy can put the person at ease. Acknowledging their feelings through statements helps people feel heard,” Ruth continues.Ask what they need
Sometimes people need to let off steam and other times they want solutions, so it’s best to ask how you can support them. Check whether they would like advice or just to share their experience. Ruth says, “ 38 ” 39
Accidentally we tend to understate the person’s experience with comments like “ 40 ” This can invalidate (驳斥) their feelings and experiences. Ruth also recommends trying to avoid offering uninvited advice, or pushing the person into problem-solving before they feel ready. “They may already be overwhelmed and a barrage of possibilities and solutions, without a good understanding of all the factors, can be unhelpful and make the person feel unheard,” she says. “Try to avoid making yourself the focus of the conversation,” adds Ruth.
A.It could have been worse.
B.It is the worst news I’ve heard.
C.Try not to minimize or make it about you.
D.Avoid looking at your phone or other distractions.
E.Listening is more powerful than comforting words.
F.Here, we look at what to do when someone shares their difficult news with you.
G.Asking can offer the person a sense of being heard when they feel overwhelmed.
【答案】36.F 37.D 38.G 39.C 40.A
36.设空位于首段段尾,应是起到点明本文主题,引出下文的作用,根据前文“Whether a friend has broken up with their long-term partner, a colleague is losing his job, or a loved one has been diagnosed with a health condition, there are times when people share difficult news with us. We may be unsure about how best to help or feel awkward and uncomfortable.(不管是朋友和长期伴侣分手了,同事失业了,还是爱人被诊断出患有疾病,总有一些时候人们会和我们分享不幸的消息。我们可能不确定如何最好地帮助或感到尴尬和不舒服)”可知,本文主题,应是有人和你分享不幸的消息时如何处理,所以F项“Here, we look at what to do when someone shares their difficult news with you.(在这里,我们来看看当有人和你分享他们艰难的消息时该怎么做)”符合文意,承接上文,点明主题。故选F项。
37.根据前文“Ruth, a psychologist at Stony Brook University, recommends trying to find somewhere quiet to have the conversation if possible.(石溪大学的心理学家鲁斯建议,如果可能的话,尽量找一个安静的地方进行对话)”可知,D项“Avoid looking at your phone or other distractions.(避免看手机或其他让人分心的东西)”是对前文的进一步说明,符合文意。故选D项。
38.设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“Sometimes people need to let off steam and other times they want solutions, so it’s best to ask how you can support them. Check whether they would like advice or just to share their experience.(有时人们需要发泄,有时他们需要解决方案,所以最好问问你如何支持他们。看看他们是需要建议还是只是分享他们的经验)”可知,本段主要讲述可以询问对方的需求,所以G项“Asking can offer the person a sense of being heard when they feel overwhelmed.(当他们感到不知所措时,询问可以给他们一种被倾听的感觉)”是对前文的总结,符合本段主题。故选G项。
39.设空为本段小标题,根据后文“Ruth also recommends trying to avoid offering uninvited advice, or pushing the person into problem-solving before they feel ready. “They may already be overwhelmed and a barrage of possibilities and solutions, without a good understanding of all the factors, can be unhelpful and make the person feel unheard,” she says. “Try to avoid making yourself the focus of the conversation,” adds Ruth.(鲁斯还建议,尽量避免主动提供未经请求的建议,或者在对方还没准备好之前就催促他们解决问题。她说:“他们可能已经不知所措,而在没有充分了解所有因素的情况下,一大堆可能性和解决方案可能会让他们觉得无助,并感觉自己没有被倾听。”鲁斯补充道:“尽量不要让自己成为谈话的焦点。”)”可知,本段主要讲述不要在没有充分了解所有因素的情况下,给出一大堆可能性和解决方案,或把话题引到自己身上。所以C项“Try not to minimize or make it about you.(尽量不要轻描淡写或把话题引到自己身上)”符合本段主题,为本段小标题。故选C项。
40.根据前文“Accidentally we tend to understate the person’s experience with comments like(我们无意中倾向于低估别人的经历,比如)”可知,空处应是针对低估别人的经历这件事,进行举例,所以A项“It could have been worse.(本来可能更糟)”符合此处主题,是对前文的举例。故选A项。

The last season of the documentary series "The Forever Walk: China" will be unveiled on Tuesday as American 56 (adventure) Paul Salopek has reached the end of his over two-year journey — walking nearly 6,700 kilometers across China from southwest 57 northeast.
The season, spanning three episodes, follows Salopek journey through the Lyuliang Mountains before visiting the Foguang Temple 58 (guide) by a local archaeologist in Shanxi province. He then ventures into Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park alongside rangers tracking the Amur Tiger. Finally, Salopek gathers all the local companions 59 joined him throughout the trip and reviews the stories of 60 (they) 6,700 km journey.
Together with the previous two seasons aired in 2022 and 2023, respectively, it documents 61 Salopek's cross-country journey in China began in September 2021 in Yunnan's Tengchong and 62 (conclude)this May in Dalian. The documentary series has won a 63 (consider)following worldwide.
When Salopek arrived in China, he had already been walking for eight years on a quest to retrace the migration path of early humans by 64 ( cross) four continents in more than a decade. The giant project began in Ethiopia in 2013 and is scheduled to end in Tierra del Fuego in South America. His China expedition is a part of this project. Salopek and his partners have produced over 4,000 posts with photos, videos and writings in China 65 (feed) the worldwide followers.
56. adventurer
57.to
58. guided
59.who/that
60.their
61. how
62. concluded
63. considerable
64. crossing
65. to feed

Being helpful is a very good quality, but sometimes being overly enthusiastic can also cause trouble to others.
It was the night before the summer break, and it was raining cats and dogs, but I wasn’t bothered because Justin, Wendy, Crystal, Kevin and I were texting each other about our upcoming trip to Niagara Falls. Everybody was so engaged in brainstorming ideas about what to bring along. Suddenly, Justin came up with a brilliant idea. He suggested that we should assign roles to each one of us so that we could minimize everyone’s workload. I was assigned the babysitter’s role because I was the most careful person among us.
When the sun was right above our heads, we departed for our destination. On our way, I served as the babysitter. I collected hundreds of junk food wraps and guided us into every single rest station when needed. As Wendy and I were lining up for the washroom, I noticed how a little girl always got pushed out of the line, so I let her stand in front of me. When we all got back to the car, Wendy praised me as a kind and responsible member, which made me feel very proud of myself. I was happy. On the way, I saw Crystal holding something that looked like a sun hat. Justin asked Crystal what it was, but because I was too excited, I didn’t catch Crystal’s answer clearly. It seemed that she mentioned her mother.
When we arrived at our hotel, it was already six in the evening. Since no one was hungry, we decided to rest and get ready for next day’s adventure. However, I, as an exception, was too excited, thinking about spending the next few days. I couldn’t close my eyes. I decided to go to Crystal’s room since she was playing some music there. Crystal was weaving (编织) the thing that I saw in the car. As I was watching her weave, time passed by like an arrow, and Crystal unintentionally fell asleep before she finished her sun hat.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Seeing Crystal fall quickly into her dream, I suddenly came up with an idea.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Instead of receiving Crystal’s appreciation, I was awakened by a shake the next morning.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Seeing Crystal fall quickly into her dream, I suddenly came up with an idea. I thought that I could help her to finish the sun hat, like a babysitter, and it would be a total surprise for her the next morning. So without hesitation, I took her hat, and walked out of her room as quietly as an ant. I was so focused on making it look nice that I didn’t notice how much time had passed. At about 11:30 pm, I finally finished it and put it in Crystal’s room quietly. I couldn’t wait to see Crystal’s smiling face the next morning. I was very exhausted, so I fell asleep the second my head landed on the pillow.
Instead of receiving Crystal’s appreciation, I was awakened by a shake the next morning. I quickly opened my eyes and saw Crystal standing beside my bed, her face red with anger. She started yelling at me. Before she finished her first sentence, I interrupted her and told her that I’d helped her finish the sun hat. Just at that moment, tears ran out of her eyes like a spring. She shouted angrily that it was not supposed to be a sun hat, but a basket for her mother’s birthday. She said I ruined everything she’d planned. I felt so guilty and realized that being overly enthusiastic indeed caused trouble sometimes.
①走出去:walk out of/step out of/slip out of
②碰到枕头:land on the pillow/touch the pillow/hit the pillow
③流出:run out of/ stream from/ flow from

Junior Lifeguards is a free summer program educating local youth ages 13-17 in ocean awareness, beach safety, and lifeguarding skills such as ocean swimming and first aid. Participants will learn rescue skills from National Park Service lifeguards, with most classes meeting at Stinson Beach. The program incorporates interaction with a range of emergency services personnel from the NPS and other agencies. Many of our activities will take place in the ocean, so ownership of a wetsuit is highly recommended.
Important Dates
Application Period: April 1st – June 1st
Tryouts and Orientation: Tuesday June 25th 10:00am – 1:00pm
Class Dates: Mondays and Tuesdays July 1st - August 6th
Class Times
Ages 13-14 Class Times: 10:00am - 1:30pm
Ages 15-17 Class Times: 10:00am – 3:00pm
Location
We meet each morning at the base of the main lifeguard tower at Stinson Beach.
Tryouts
To ensure each participant can safely handle the physical demands of this program, all junior lifeguards must pass a physical fitness screening on June 25th, consisting of an untimed 600 yard ocean swim followed immediately by a one mile long beach run. 4/3 wetsuits are strongly encouraged! Attendance to the tryout is mandatory in order to be considered.
Lifeguard Certification
Participants 15 years and older will be enrolling in an American Red Cross lifeguard training program. There is no fee for this training or certification, which allows holders to seek employment as paid lifeguards. To meet certification and testing requirements, some coursework will be completed online outside of class hours, and participants must reach their 15th birthday on or before completion of the program.

Dear Chris,
I hope this email finds you well. I want to share with you an exciting event that took place in our school yesterday - the Traditional Food Festival.
Aiming to showcase the rich diversity of Chinese cuisine, the Traditional Food Festival highlighted its cultural significance with food stands set up around the campus, each offering a different traditional dish. Not only did we try some dumplings, rice noodles, Kung Pao Chicken, but we also learned how to make dishes in cooking workshops.
Having participated in this unforgettable activity, I enjoyed mouth-watering dishes and gained a deeper understanding of Chinese cuisine. I found myself immersed in this delightful food journey.
What traditional foods are popular in your country? Do you have any favorite dishes that you would recommend? Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

Attendance to the tryout is mandatory in order to be considered.
Lifeguard Certification
Participants 15 years and older will be enrolling in an American Red Cross lifeguard training program. There is no fee for this training or certification, which allows holders to seek employment as paid lifeguards.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Seeing Crystal fall quickly into her dream, I suddenly came up with an idea.
