Daud Belon sits cross-legged on the forest floor, using dried plants to make a traditional basket. The 43-year-old is a senior member of the Orang Asli tribe (部落)of Ulu Jelai Forest Reserve, Malaysia.
Most weeks, Daud will travel in the forest near his village to collect the fibres and plants required for the practice of making handcrafts (手工艺品). It’s a job that requires patience; crafters can sit for the whole afternoons inside bamboo houses, and each basket can take weeks or even months to make. The practice is limited to the region. Daud’s community has lived there for generations, but now, the forest is under threat.
A hydro dam (水电坝)is being built in the area. Despite significant resistance to the project, parts of the forest in which the locals collect plant materials have already been cut down for roads to give machinery and workers access to the remote location. The hydro project, which villagers fear will pollute the water and ruin their ancient sites, will be completed by the end of this year and harm those plant resources.
Native lands may be considered as things occupying large spaces by outsiders, and loggers (伐木工)just see a forest and valuable trees. For the Orang Asli, it is more than that. Logging is like destroying their historical sites and breaking down their museums. It is their hardware store where they get their building materials, and their hospital where they get their medicines.
Although cash-poor, the Orang Asli have provided for themselves through forest resources and farming for generations. “Money isn’t everything here,” according to Daud. “It’s not like the outside. The biggest threat to the Orang Asli is that our land is not recognized. We get moved to new settlements when our land is needed. Without our ancestral site, it is impossible for us to continue our traditions, an important part of cultural knowledge.”
4. Which of the following best describes the crafts?
A. Expensive and well-known. B. Popular and easily-made.
C. Unique and time-consuming. D. Cheap and high-quality.
5. What problem do the Orang Asli face?
A. They fail to earn a living. B. They’ll move to a remote location.
C. Their environment is polluted. D. They’ll lack craft-making materials.
6. Why does the author make the comparisons in paragraph 4?
A. To express disagreement on logging. B. To show the forest’s value to locals.
C. To prove the importance of land. D. To show the long-time impact of the dam.
7. What does Daud imply in the last paragraph?
A. Losing land leads to loss of culture.
B. Their tribe is often forced to leave homes.
C. The Orang Asli need financial support.
D. The self-supporting life is not recognized.

Before the crowd of students rounded the track, Coach Matthew Moore at Sandburg Middle School explained the goal of Monday’s practice to get students adapted to running two miles continuously, something that was new to many of the middle-schoolers on the cross-country (越野的) team, and thus improve their fitness. However, some students’ reason for circling the track was hanging out with friends as much as running.
The teachers and administrators at Sandburg Middle School already knew that. In fact, creating opportunities to make friends and build community was part of the reason Fairfax County Public Schools decided to introduce sports to its middle schools for the first time this year. This came as schools around the county were confronted with a mental health crisis.
In Fairfax County, about17 percent of sixth-graders reported feeling stressed most of the time, and about 62 percent reported experiencing stress some of the time. Nearly 30 percent of sixth-graders reported feeling so sad or hopeless almost every day for two or more weeks in a row that they stopped doing usual activities.
Michelle Reid, the head of Fairfax County Public Schools, hopes athletics will improve mental and physical wellness in the district’s middle schools. “We’re in a mental health crisis in many ways, and also a fitness crisis in this county. It’s really important for students to be active and engaged in sports, and we’re just excited at that possibility,” said Reid.
Claire Brown, 13, joined the team at Sandburg to stay active. Running was not her “strong suit”, but she said she could already feel herself building endurance (耐力) and getting better. The encouragement from friends on the team has helped. “It’s just like everybody encouraging everybody,” Brown said. “‘You can do this. Push a little harder. You got there.’ That cheers me up.”
8. Why was Monday’s practice held in the school?
A. To build students up. B. To train students for a race.
C. To teach running skills. D. To help students get used to the track.
9. What does the underlined part “were confronted with” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Improve. B. Encounter. C. Survive D. Prevent.
10. What can be learned from Brown’s experience?
A. Promoting confidence is urgent. B. Students need more encouragement.
C. Teamwork changes her greatly. D. The practice has far-reaching influence.
11. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Sandburg Middle School Running: A New Way to Improve Students’ Wellness.
B. Sandburg Middle School Running: An Effective Method to Reduce Pressure.
C. Sandburg Middle School Running: An Unsuccessful Attempt at Fitness Training.
D. Sandburg Middle School Running: A Great Opportunity to Promote Friendship.
D
With basic developments in the field of technology, some experts foresee serious risks to jobs and employability in the coming years due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). About 27% of jobs are at high risk of automation (自动化) during the artificial intelligence era.
Low and middle-skilled jobs are most at risk, including construction, farming, fishing, forestry and, to a lesser extent, production and transportation. High-skilled jobs, despite being more exposed to recent progress in AI, face the least risk of automation.
While the adoption of AI is still relatively low, rapid progress, falling technology costs and the increasing availability of workers with AI skills suggest that the world may be on the edge of an AI revolution (革命). So far there is little evidence of a negative employment impact on companies that adopt AI. Workers and employers say that AI can reduce boring and dangerous tasks, leading to greater employee engagement and physical safety.
However, a recent survey showed that three in five workers are worried about losing their job to AI within the next decade. Additionally, a similar number of workers worry that wages would decrease due to AI. More than half of workers are concerned about privacy and three in four say that AI has increased work pace.
In my opinion, for the better protection of the labour market and workers in the coming years, governments should encourage employers to provide more training, integrate (融入) AI skills into education and support diversity in the AI workforce. Besides, longer-term policy frameworks for the use of AI in the workplace should be considered and closer international cooperation should be seen to maximize the benefits while properly managing the risks.
12. Who may be most affected by automation?
A. A tour guide. B. A building worker.
C. A coffee producer. D. A university professor.
13. What is the workers and employer’s attitude towards the adoption of AI in the workplace according to paragraph 3?
A. Worried. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
14. What do the figures in paragraph 4 imply?
A. Harmed personal privacy. B. Decreased job satisfaction.
C. AI-related positions’ popularity. D. Workers’ concerns over AI.
15. What is the author’s advice in the last paragraph?
A. Adopting policies to control AI’s impact.
B. Limiting AI’s application in the workplace.
C. Promoting cooperation between AI companies.
D. Reducing AI education in colleges.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The frightening day of our diving test was here. Our parents thought we were lucky to have an Olympic-size swimming pool at the school. My mom stressed that the swimming pool was one of the best in our city. But I didn’t feel happy about it at all. Instead, I felt afraid of the swimming pool. It was mainly because I was terribly shy.
I was so shy that I always sat at the back of the room in class so I’d not be called upon to read. As for the present physical education class each Monday morning, I would work my way to the back of the line forming at the diving board so I would not have to practice the dives.
Now it was another Monday morning - the morning of our diving test. My blood ran cold when the teacher Ms. Robbins announced that we would be graded for our final on the most difficult dive- the jackknife. And she added, “This diving test is important. The one who fails has to spare time in the following Monday mornings to practice diving in this swimming pool and attend this test again.”
My body kept shaking with fear as the line to the scary diving board shortened. As I watched, each student seemed to perform the challenging dive effortlessly. And shortly I would have to attempt something that I had never even practiced before.
Then I remembered someone telling me that when you picture yourself doing a skill over and over, it’s just as effective as physically practicing that skill. So I watched carefully as each classmate jumped at the end of the board once, added a jump for height, folded their body in half to reach for their toes, and finally straightened out like an arrow for going into the water. After carefully watching for a while, I was actually in a state of surprise, because all of a sudden I realized that it was possible for me to perform these four steps of diving.
Eventually all classmates except me finished jumping. The teacher announced that it was my turn.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end.

【答案】4. C 5. D 6. B 7. A

【10题详解】

Now, it was another Monday morning - the morning of our diving test.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】One possible version:
With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end. Looking down, I found all my classmates were looking up at me. My face suddenly felt hot. Finally, I ignored them. Picturing the four steps of diving, I jumped. Then I folded my body but failed to reach for my toes. And instead of entering the water like an arrow, I fell into the water, with my body being flat. As a result, it caused a huge sound, which made all the classmates burst out laughing.
Knowing I failed, I climbed out of the pool, embarrassed. After class, Ms. Robbins comforted and encouraged me. In the following many Monday mornings, I practiced again and again under her guidance. Gradually, I became more confident and less shy. Finally, I attended the diving test again and performed well. This time, my classmates cheered and clapped. I was so glad. I knew my success resulted from my beating my shyness and my hard practice.
