Yash Mehta, 14, got the idea for his first science fair project on a trip to Old Delhi, India. There, he visited a school for blind students and noticed that none of them used electronic braille (盲文) readers. They were just too costly. So he decided to build a more affordable one. His device uses tiny spinning motors to create vibrations that feel like the raised dots of braille letters. He then tested it with students at New Delhi’ s Blind Relief Association, achieving 86% accuracy in braille reading compared to print.
“I’ve never been capable of software,” Yash says. But building his device required coding skills, which he learned by watching YouTube videos and reading Reddit posts. “Picking up that new skill was cool,” he adds, “and seeing everything fit together the first time was just pure excitement.”
Despite his initial joy, the process wasn’t without challenges. At first, he attempted to base his design on a TENS machine — a device that uses electric pulses to relieve pain, hoping these pulses could create the feeling of braille dots. When this approach didn’t work, he realized that instead of starting over, he only needed to change the way of spreading information to the finger. This idea helped him power through the development of his motor-based device.
Yash’s research earned him the first-place Technology Award in the 2024 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge. “I’m planning to add OCR,” Yash says. Right now, his machine translates computer texts into braille letters. But with OCR, it could translate printed or handwritten texts into braille. For those new to science fairs, Yash advises, “Try to find something that you think can be done based on your current abilities. Also, ask people in your community what problems they need solving. I think that’s the most important part — getting first-hand feedback.”
4. Which of the following best describes Yash’s braille reader?
A. Water-resistant. B. Budget-friendly.
C. Pocket-sized. D. Energy-efficient.
5. What can we learn about Yash from paragraph 2?
A. He is determined. B. He is humble.
C. He is experienced. D. He is sociable.
6. How did Yash handle his challenge during the design process?
A. By focusing on electric pulse strength.
B. By changing the TENS machine’s design.
C. By starting over with a new type of motor.
D. By adjusting how messages reached the finger.
7. What does Yash advise beginners to do?
A. Seek feedback from their peers.
B. Choose difficult problems to solve.
C. Find projects matching their skill level.
D. Share experiences with the community.

Nicholas Dames has taught Literature Humanities at Columbia University since 1998. He loves the job, but it has changed. Over the past decade, students have become bewildered by the thought of finishing multiple books a semester. This development puzzled Dames until a first-year student shared how challenging she had found the early assignments. The student said that at her public high school, she was only assigned passages, but not entire books. “My jaw dropped,” Dames told me. This helped explain the change: It’s not that they don’t want to read. It’s that they don’t know how.
Failing to complete a 14-line poem without giving in to distraction (干扰) suggests one familiar explanation for the decrease in reading ability: smartphones. Teenagers are constantly drawn by their devices. Reading books, even for pleasure, can’t compete with TikTok. In 1976, about 40 percent of high-school seniors said they had read at least six books for fun in the previous year, compared with 11.5 percent who hadn’t read any. By 2022, those percentages had flipped.
But high school kids appear to be encountering fewer and fewer books in the classroom as well. Since the ability to read an entire book is difficult to assess, teachers focus on skills that are easier to measure. They have shifted from books to short passages, followed by questions about the author’s main idea, just as standardized reading-comprehension tests do.
Faced with this situation, many college professors feel they have no choice but to assign less reading and lower their expectations. This means students will miss out on the mental development that comes from reading entire books. Reading enlarges your sympathies. Deep reading — sustained focus on a text — encourages a number of valuable mental habits, including critical thinking and self-reflection, in ways that skimming or reading in short passages does not.
I can imagine worse preparations for the trials, and thrills, of Literature Humanities. But we’ve never forgotten the originals. To understand the human condition, and to appreciate humankind’s greatest achievements, you still need to read The Iliad — all of it.
8. What does the underlined word “bewildered” mean in paragraph 1?
A Delighted. B. Confused.
C. Amazed. D. Relieved.
9. Why does the author list numbers in paragraph 2?
A. To highlight the rise of social media.
B. To clarify the problems of smartphones.
C. To illustrate the change in reading methods.
D. To demonstrate the decline in book reading.
10. What is a result of professors assigning less reading?
A. The shortage of learning motivation.
B. The reduction of genuine sympathies.
C. The loss of cognitive growth opportunities.
D. The restriction of personal academic progress.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards reading originals?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive.
C. Cautious. D. Indifferent.

A robotic finger that could find cancerous lumps (肿块) under the skin has been invented by scientists. The device made by Chinese engineers has a highly sensitive form of machine feeling that uses springs to detect tiny lumps. Experts hope the device may serve as a “robodoctor” to help clinicians with routine tasks like taking a pulse or checking for lumps. Dr Hongbo Wang, an author of the study from the University of Science and Technology of China, said: “We believe a hand that can move freely with these fingers could serve as a ‘robodoctor’ in future hospitals, especially helping patients in rural or undeveloped areas lacking trained medical professionals.”
Scientists have created robotic fingers and hands for a long time, but it has been a continuous struggle to copy the soft, delicate sensing abilities of a doctor’s hands. To address this challenge, scientists developed a device using springs, cameras, electrical sensors, and AI to detect pressure changes on the fingertip and identify objects it touches. In their study, scientists say the device could be adjusted to be as sensitive as a human finger.
Dr Wang said: “Humans can easily recognize the firmness of diverse objects by simply pressing them with their fingers.” Similarly, since the device has the ability to sense both its bending and the force at the fingertip, it can detect firmness similar to our human hands by simply pressing an object. The Chinese team found that the robotic finger can type “like a human hand”, spelling out the word “hello”.
By using additional sensors to improve joint mobility, enabling the device to move in multiple directions just like a human finger, the researchers say it may be ready to perform “effective and efficient” medical examinations in the near future. Dr Wang added: “We hope to develop an intelligent hand, together with a sensorised artificial muscle-driven robotic arm, to copy the unique functions and fine movements of the human hands.”
12. What is the function of the robotic finger?
A. To replace human doctors.
B. To diagnose various diseases.
C. To detect small physical changes.
D. To conduct highly precise surgeries.
13. Why does the author mention the robotic finger’s typing ability?
A. To show its sensing capability.
B. To prove its reliability.
C To stress its spelling ability.
D. To reveal its complexity.
14. How do researchers plan to improve the robotic finger?
A. By adding more basic functions.
B. By enhancing its existing features.
C. By preparing it for medical operations.
D. By using AI to improve joint mobility.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Progress in robotic operation technology.
B. Benefits of robotic hands in medical care.
C. Applications of AI in diagnosing diseases.
D. Invention of robotic fingers in cancer detection.

The sun was setting, giving a warm light over the neighborhood as Ethan walked home from school. The air was fresh with the sweet smell of flowers, and the distant sound of cars brought a sense of calm. His backpack, full of books and dreams, swung with each step, marking the end of another school day.
Spotting a shiny object on the roadside, Ethan bent down and picked up a stylish new smartphone. It looked almost untouched, and his heart raced as he realized how valuable it was. For a moment, he imagined the happiness it would bring to his tech-loving little brother or how it could ease his parents’ financial load. But a quiet voice within urged him: “Do the right thing.” The smartphone, once a lucky find, now felt like a test of his integrity.
With determination, Ethan decided to find the phone’s owner. He searched for any contact information or recent calls, his fingers carefully tapping the screen. He felt a sense of duty — this small act would speak volumes about who he was. Taking a deep breath, he dialed a number, his hand shaking slightly with a mix of nerves and the weight of doing the right thing. The phone rang, and with each ring, his resolve grew stronger. When Mr. Thompson finally answered, Ethan’s voice, though young, was firm as he explained the situation.
Mr. Thompson was overjoyed, his gratitude evident in his voice. They arranged to meet at the local café, a place where they could both feel comfortable and at ease. As Ethan hung up, a smile spread across his face. The walk to the coffee shop was a journey of reflection. Ethan passed by familiar scenes, neighbors tending their gardens, and children playing in the fading light. Each scene was a glimpse of life, simple yet profound, reminding him of the community he was part of.

A. Delighted. B. Confused.
C. Amazed. D. Relieved.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了学生阅读量较少这一现象及其对学生的影响。
【8题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词下文“The student said that at her public high school, she was only assigned passages, but not entire books. “My jaw dropped,” Dames told me. This helped explain the change: It’s not that they don’t want to read. It’s that they don’t know how.(该学生说,在她的公立高中,她只分配了一些段落,而不是整本书。 “我的下巴都惊掉了,”达姆斯告诉我。这有助于解释这一变化:并不是他们不想读书。那是他们不知道如何读)”可知,学生们在高中时老师只分配一些段落而不是整本书让他们去读。由此猜测,学生们对一个学期读完多本书的想法感到困惑。划线单词意为“困惑的”,故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Failing to complete a 14-line poem without giving in to distraction (干扰) suggests one familiar explanation for the decrease in reading ability: smartphones. Teenagers are constantly drawn by their devices. Reading books, even for pleasure, can’t compete with TikTok. In 1976, about 40 percent of high-school seniors said they had read at least six books for fun in the previous year, compared with 11.5 percent who hadn’t read any.
根据第四段“Faced with this situation, many college professors feel they have no choice but to assign less reading and lower their expectations. This means students will miss out on the mental development that comes from reading entire books. Reading enlarges your sympathies. Deep reading — sustained focus on a text — encourages a number of valuable mental habits, including critical thinking and self-reflection, in ways that skimming or reading in short passages does not.(面对这种情况,许多大学教授感到别无选择,只能减少布置的阅读量,降低期望值。
根据最后一段“I can imagine worse preparations for the trials, and thrills, of Literature Humanities. But we’ve never forgotten the originals. To understand the human condition, and to appreciate humankind’s greatest achievements, you still need to read The Iliad — all of it.(我可以想象为文学人文学科的考验和刺激做好更糟糕的准备。但我们从未忘记最初的作品。要了解人类的处境,要欣赏人类最伟大的成就,你仍然需要阅读《伊利亚特》——全部)”可推知,作者对于阅读原著的态度是支持的,故选B。

C. To stress its spelling ability.
B Benefits of robotic hands in medical care.
C. Applications of AI in diagnosing diseases.
D. Invention of robotic fingers in cancer detection.

【答案】Sample One:
Dear Ryan,
I fully support the “All-English Day” proposal. I think it’s an innovative idea. It would create a more authentic language environment, encouraging students to speak English naturally. This experience will not only improve our oral skills but also build our confidence in communicating with others in English.
However, some students might find it difficult at first. To help them adapt, we could start with simple classroom instructions in English and organize small group activities, like role-plays or mini-presentations. These steps can gradually increase their comfort level.
Overall, I believe this activity is beneficial and worth trying out.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Sample Two:
Dear Ryan,
I understand why you proposed having an “All-English Day” every Tuesday, and I appreciate your intention to help us improve our English. However, I’m a bit concerned that it might be too difficult for many students. Some of us may lack the vocabulary and feel stressed, leading to frustration rather than progress.
Perhaps we could start in an easier way. For instance, we might introduce English-only sessions during breaks or have optional English clubs after school. This gradual approach would allow students to practice without feeling overwhelmed.
In my view, a slower pace would help everyone feel more comfortable and learn more effectively.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】
At the coffee shop the meeting was brief but heartfelt. Mr. Thompson couldn’t stop thanking Ethan, his eyes shining with gratitude. He even took out a small sum of money as a reward, but Ethan politely declined. “It’s the right thing to do,” Ethan said with a smile. Mr. Thompson then gave Ethan a big hug, saying he was a role-model for his own kids. Ethan blushed slightly, feeling a bit embarrassed but also very proud.
As Ethan walked home, he felt lighter, as if a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He thought about how a small act of integrity could bring so much joy and a sense of fulfillment. The familiar sights of his neighborhood seemed even more charming. He realized that being part of this community meant looking out for one another. This experience not only strengthened his belief in honesty but also made him cherish the simple yet precious moments in life more.
