I was absorbed in a unique experience the moment I opened The Secret Garden. At that time, I had to get ready for the eighth grade, and I felt the pressure of school. It worried me from time to time, so I tried to make myself feel better through reading. This novel was my path to happiness.
It starts out in a sad atmosphere, and I quickly warmed to Mary, the heroine (女主人公). Despite the fact that she is selfish and disagreeable, I still got the impression that her loneliness is what leads to all of her unpopular personalities. She has to deal with the death of her parents. I wouldn’t be able to accept this reality if I were her. It surprised me that Mary later discovers a way to pick herself up. Thanks to a robin (知更鸟), she discovers a garden. In the garden, Mary finds every day filled with things to do, including looking after the sad prince Colin, meeting the passionate gardener Ben and playing with the animal-lover Dickon. That’s the life Mary wants! The roses, leaves, all plants make the garden alive. The only word I could think of while reading was “Magic”!
The moment I finished reading this book, I realized that it was not just written for children. So I started to think about the meaning of life. Are the garden and society the same thing? My answer may be “Yes”.
The book tells us there doesn’t have to be a real garden for ourselves, but just an inner’ space. Reading, communicating or just taking a walk can help us deal with hard times. It also tells us to face failure and pain correctly. We can’t lose ourselves in sadness for such a long time and need to keep moving forward. Just as Tagore once said, “If you shed tears when you miss the sun, you also miss the stars.”
24. Why did the author start reading The Secret Garden?
A. To prepare for an important exam. B. To be free from the stress of school.
C. To look for some writing inspiration. D. To explore ways to deal with loneliness.
25. What does the author say about Mary before she discovers the garden?
A. She’s far-sighted. B. She’s pitiful. C. She’s well-informed. D. She’s imaginative.
26. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. We ought to escape difficulties. B. We should stay positive toward life.
C. We ought to make the most of gardens. D. We should appreciate the beauty of nature.
27. The text is probably taken from ______.
A. a book review B. a science report C. a gardening guide D. a romantic story

As food waste breaks up in outdoor landfills, it often gives off carbon dioxide (CO₂). This powerful gas speeds up the rise of temperature and climate change on the earth. Experts figure that nearly a third of the world’s food, about 1.3 billion tons, is wasted annually. This waste generates a surprising 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gases each year.
Most countries struggle with food waste management. However, South Korea stands out with its creative composting (堆肥) system called Jongyangje, which requires citizens to separate their food waste. Where available, they can deal with it in specialized electronic bins (垃圾箱) that direct citizens to pay for the waste based on the weight.
Those without electronic waste bins nearby must buy special compost bags. They range in price from 10 cents to $2, depending on their size. These bags can then be thrown into specially marked bins. Citizens who mix food waste with regular rubbish risk fines of up to $800.
The collected food waste is taken to composting facilities. Some of it is changed into biogas, a type of renewable energy used to power homes. The rest is turned into chicken and pig feed.
Despite citizen contributions, Jongyangje is in need of an annual running cost of over $600million. Additionally, not all food waste is recyclable (可回收利用的). Bones from animals like chickens can harm the recycling equipment. Moreover, some farmers are unwilling to use composted waste as fertilizer due to its high sodium content, which limits its usability.
However, the 20-year-old system has brought eye-catching results. The country recycles an impressive 98 percent of its 5.5 million tons of annual food waste. This far surpasses the US, which composts only 5 percent of its 60 million tons of annual food waste. This outstanding performance proves the effectiveness of government-citizen cooperation in managing food waste.
28. What can food waste result in when breaking up?
A. Rising food prices. B. Energy shortage. C. Worldwide starvation. D. Global warming.
29. What’s the function of the electronic bins?
A. To store special compost bags. B. To separate the renewable waste.
C. To transport food waste conveniently. D. To weigh the waste and collect payment.
30. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about Jongyangje?
A. Challenges faced by the system. B. Tricky waste sorting process.
C. Technical problems during the running. D. Resistance from the citizens.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Importance of Composting in Environmental Protection
B. Food Waste Is Increasingly Affecting People’s Daily Life
C. South Korea Is Leading the Way in Food Waste Recycling
D. Government-citizen Efforts to Reduce Greenhouse Gases
【答案】28. D 29. D 30. A 31. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了韩国用一个名为“Jongyangje”的创造性堆肥系统处理食物垃圾,介绍了这一系统的工作原理以及取得的良好效果。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“As food waste breaks up in outdoor landfills, it often gives off carbon dioxide (CO₂). This powerful gas speeds up the rise of temperature and climate change on the earth. (当食物垃圾在室外垃圾填埋场分解时,通常会释放出二氧化碳(CO₂)。这种强大的气体加速了地球上温度的上升和气候的变化。)”可知,分解时食物浪费会导致全球变暖。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Where available, they can deal with it in specialized electronic bins (垃圾箱) that direct citizens to pay for the waste based on the weight. (在可行的情况下,他们可以用专门的电子垃圾箱处理垃圾,引导市民根据垃圾的重量付费。)”可知,电子垃圾箱的功能是对废物进行称重并收取费用。故选D。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段“Despite citizen contributions, Jongyangje is in need of an annual running cost of over $600million. Additionally, not all food waste is recyclable (可回收利用的). Bones from animals like chickens can harm the recycling equipment. Moreover, some farmers are unwilling to use composted waste as fertilizer due to its high sodium content, which limits its usability. (虽然有市民捐款,但Jongyangje每年需要6亿多美元的运营费用。此外,并不是所有的食物垃圾都是可回收的。鸡等动物的骨头会损坏回收设备。此外,一些农民不愿意使用堆肥废物作为肥料,因为它的高钠含量限制了它的可用性。)”可知,第5段主要告诉了我们系统面临的挑战。故选A。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Most countries struggle with food waste management. However, South Korea stands out with its creative composting (堆肥) system called Jongyangje, which requires citizens to separate their food waste. As the clothing industries face environmental challenges, more and more designers are exploring new ways to diminish their carbon footprint. Zsofia Kollar, the founder of Human Material Loop, is turning to an unexpected resource - human hair - to lower the effect. She collects hair cuttings from hairdressers and transforms them into fabric (布料) for clothes and home decorations.
Most people laugh at her unusual behavior. But Kollar still wants to have a try. “Throughout history, we’ve made full use of a variety of animal fibers (纤维) in textiles (纺织品), yet our own hair often gets ignored,” Kollar says. “Why not treat human hair as another valuable textile fiber?”
Human hair as a biomaterial for clothing makes perfect sense to Kollar. It’s a wonderful fiber and has extremely high performing abilities. It’s very lightweight but fairly strong. The combined hair of a head could support the weight of two elephants. Nobody feels uncomfortable with hair, which is an important aspect when developing it for the clothing market.
The production process of the cut hair involves treating it with harmless chemicals. These chemicals help clean the hair and reduce its hardness. Kollar says the resulting material can be dyed any color, except white, and be made into fabric that feels soft and comfortable. Moreover, the fabric could serve as a replacement for natural materials like cotton, whose production requires a lot of water and harmful chemicals. “Waste hair doesn’t harm any soil, need any harmful chemical, pollute any water, or produce any greenhouse gas,” Kollar points out.
Human Material Loop, which was founded in 2021, is still in its early stages. So far, the hair fabric has only been used to create simple types of clothing. But Kollar has partnered with a high-end fashion company to make a few of her clothes later in 2025. The designer’ s ultimate dream is to transform twenty-five percent of global hair-salon waste - 550,000 tons of human hair - into fabric annually by 2034.
32. What does the underlined word “diminish” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Put aside. B. Hold onto. C. Try out. D. Bring down.
33. What do most people think of Kollar’s action?
A. It’s persuasive. B. It’s odd. C. It’s practical. D. It’s shameful.
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Comparisons of clothing materials. B. High scientific research value of human hair.
C. Advantages of human hair as clothing material. D. Steps for hair textiles to enter the clothing market.
35. What can we know about the fabric made from human hair?
A. It can take in harmful chemicals. B. It’s incredibly strong and washes easily.
C. It has gained a large share of the market. D. It’s energy-saving and environmentally friendly.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. D

One day, Siti’s good friend, Surin, came to her house excitedly with some news. “Siti, there’ll be a tree climbing competition at Marina Garden next month! I think you should enter for it!” Surin shouted, knowing it would benefit her friend.
Siti’s eyes widened when she heard this. Her heart was filled with a mix of excitement and fear. The idea of climbing a tall tree in front of everyone frightened her but part of her longed to overcome her fear. Eventually she made up her mind. “Yes, I will do it,” she told Surin firmly (坚定地).
Over the following weeks, Siti spent hours daily climbing rock walls and building up her strength. Besides, she practiced deep breathing at home to calm her nerves and said positive messages to herself to improve her self-confidence.
The day of the competition arrived and a large audience, including Siti’s family and Surin, gathered at Marina Garden. As Siti reached the competition site, she realized that a 40-foot tree there had been chosen for competitors to climb. Siti’s legs became weak as she had not expected it.
Once the competition began, one by one, the competitors climbed the tree, reaching impressive heights. Siti watched anxiously, her palms growing sweaty. Finally, it was her turn. She took a deep breath, and began her climb after putting on her safety equipment.

Look up!” Surin called out. She closed her eyes for a moment, focusing on her breathing. Gradually, she regained her calmness and found her inner strength. One branch at a time, Siti climbed higher and higher. With each step, her fear decreased and was replaced by a feeling of accomplishment. The cheers grew louder, giving her confidence. Finally, Siti made it to the top of the tree. At that very moment, she understood the true meaning of the famous quote, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” With courage and determination, anything is achievable.

29 What’s the function of the electronic bins?

Siti had a fear of heights. Her heart would race and her palms (手心) would sweat when she even tried climbing to a slightly higher place.
The first few branches were manageable and she made it upward easily till the midway point. However, when she looked down, she realized how high she had gone.
