Donald Trump won the 2024 US presidential election! According to the media,
Trump received at least 270 electoral votes, which is more than half of the 538 votes needed to
win. Trump's victory was supported by a strong base of voters who admired his economic
policies, such as tax cuts and job creation, and his tough attitude on immigration.
Do you know electoral system(选举制度)in the United States?
In the U.S., people don't directly vote for the President. Instead, they vote for "electors"
who represent their state, which called the “Electoral College”. Each state has a certain number of electors,
based on how many senators(参议员))and representatives it has in Congress. There are 538 electors in total.
To become President, a candidate(候选人)needs to win more than half of these electors’ votes, which is 270
votes. Most states have a "winner-takes-all" rule. This means the candidate who gets the most votes in that state
5
wins all of its electors.
Before the election, each party holds primaries to choose their candidate. People vote in these primaries to
say who they want to represent their party. Then, the candidates from the two main parties, Democrats(民主党)
and Republicans(共和党), campaign(竞选)across the country. They tell people why they should be President.
On Election Day, people go to polling places to vote. Some states also allow early voting or mail-in voting.
After all the votes are counted, we know who the electors will vote for. Then, in January, the electors meet and
cast their votes for President.
The person who gets the most elector votes becomes the President. They take office on January 20th,the day
after Inauguration Day, and promise to follow the Constitution. This system has been used in the U.S. since
the18th century to make sure every state's voice is heard in choosing the President.

B. Each candidate gets some electors based on their votes.

Benjamin sat on the porch of the old family house, thinking about his father. After Ethan passed away,
Benjamin was the only person in the house. They once lived happily together in the house. But one night,
Ethan and Benjamin had a fight. Benjamin walked out of the room angrily, he said no more to his father that
night. For days, neither man talked to the other when they came back from work, and they did not even eat
together any more. Days became months, the heavy silence between the two men continued. They still lived
under the same roof , but they did not talk, or even look at each other.
Eight more years passed, still they had nothing to say to each other. Ethan was getting very old. One
night, Benjamin looked at his father for the first time in weeks. Father looked tired and lonely in his armchair.

Benjamin smiled back. Then Ethan opened his mouth, trying to talk. Benjamin quickly muffled his father’s
mouth with his hand. The old man did not try to talk any more. His eyes closed again and passed away in
peace.
The doctor said, “He wanted to say something before he died. Why did you stop him?” Benjamin
answered, “It was my father who first made the decision that we should not talk. I did not want to hear him
say he was sorry. I did not want him to ever think he was wrong.”

Have you ever wondered what animals are talking about? With the development of AI, we may be able to
understand their languages!
In Professor Karen Bakker’s new book, The Sounds of Life: How Digital Technology Is Bringing Us Closer
to the Worlds of Animals and Plants, she talks about how AI is helping us to make an animal version of Google
Translate, then we can understand animals better.
All around the animal kingdom, there are sounds that we can hardly pick up and decipher (破译). Elephants,
for example, talk with each other using infrasound (次声波)—far below our human hearing range. Coral in the
ocean also sends sound waves to attract baby coral to safer areas to grow. This is surprising because coral doesn’t
have any ears! Scientists have placed listening equipment into these environments to pick up the sounds that
humans cannot hear.
After the sounds are recorded, AI can study their meaning, according to the news website Vox. For example,
Israeli researchers used AI to translate bats’ 15,000 calls. They found that more than 60 percent of the sounds were
arguments about four things: food, sleeping ways, the loss of personal space, and unwanted disturbance .
This technology can not only understand the animals but communicate back to them. For example, bees use
dances to communicate with each other. A research team in Germany, therefore, put the bee language AI system
into a robot bee. They asked the robot to create a dance routine to tell the bees where the nectar (花蜜) was, Vox
reported.
62.Karen Bakker’s new book shows us that ________.
A.why AI can help people research animals B.why animals need help from human being
C.howAI helps people do translations better D.howAI helps people better understand animals
63.What do we know about the sounds made by animals?
A.Corals have ears that can hear all animal sounds
B.Most communications among animals are infrasound.
C.Some of the sounds cannot be heard by humans directly.
D.More than 60 percent of the animal sounds are arguments.
64. What is paragraph4 mainly about?
A. The arguments of bats B. The recording of animal sound
C. The findings of AI translation D. The contents of the new website
65.How did scientists tell bees where the nectar was?
A. By asking a robot bee to teach them a new language.
B. By training other bees and showing them the way there.
C. By making a new sound with the AI system to help them.
D. By making a robot bee to tell the bees the route by dancing.

六 、阅读表达((共 5题;每题 2分,计 10分)
阅读短文,回答下面 5个问题。(每题答案不超过 10个词)
Many people believe sharks are one of the most dangerous animals in the world. But according to a report,
humans bring a far greater danger to sharks than they do to us. Shark attacks do happen, however they are not
very often. On the other hand, every hour, about 11,000 sharks are killed by humans. It is time that we should take
action to stop many kinds of sharks from dying out.
Why should we save sharks? Because killing sharks is a problem for the whole world. Sharks are on the top
of food chain. They eat other species (物种 ), but few species eat them. As sharks die off, the number of other
species will increase. This, in turn, means the food that other species eat will become less. So how can you help
save sharks?
Don’t use shark products. Pet foods, energy drinks, leather products can be made from shark parts. And shark
meat is sold around the world. Most sharks killed worldwide are hunted for their fins (鳍), which are used to make
shark fin soup. The process is unfriendly and cruel. Fishermen often cut the shark’s fins off and then drop the
shark back into the water, still alive. Sharks breathe by swimming. So if a shark can’t swim with its fin, it will die.
If you eat seafood, make sure the food you eat comes from fisheries (渔场 ) that care for the sea. Many
organizations try to protect sharks. They give us advice on how to keep them alive.
No buying, no killing! Maybe that is the best way to save sharks.
76.How many sharks are killed per hour?
77.What will happen, if sharks die off?
78.Can sharks live without fins? Why?
79.What do the organizations do to protect sharks?
80.What can we do to protect sharks?
七、缺词填空(共 10空;每空 1分,计 10分)
As an old saying goes, “Eyes are the windows of our mind.” Eyes are very important to us. However, it
seems that many people don’t know the importance of p 81 their eyes.
Nowadays, many people live a busy life and they have l 82 time to take care of their “windows”.
Even when the eyes have something w 83 , telling their owners that they are dry and uncomfortable, these
people may just not care about them, and go on with their work. Study takes students a lot of time and they don’t
have time to take care of their eyes, either. What’s worse, some of them often do eye exercises c 84 .
We all know that eyes work like a camera. When we use a camera to take photos, we adjust the focus (焦距)
to make our photos become c 85 . In our eyes, there are also lenses (晶状体) like cameras. But these lenses
can’t collect light on their o 86 . They need the ciliary muscles (睫状肌) to adjust the lenses’ shape.
When you work with your eyes too long, the ciliary muscles will feel t 87 .As a result, they won’t be
able to help the lenses w 88 properly and we won’t be able to see things clearly. If we often use our eyes
too much, we will likely get different eye i 89 , such as shortsighted.
8
Many students have got such eye problems. They spend so much time doing their homework or playing
computers that their ciliary muscles can’t get enough rest. As a result, more and more t 90 have to wear
glasses.
Let’s take good care of our eyes now.
