(2) The underlined word “It” in the passage refers to _______. (3) In this story the underlined word “_______” means ________. (4) Here “it” means________. ( 课堂检测 )(你都掌握了没有呢~~~) Abby’s Lesson ① When talking about obeying rules, Abby will never forget her experience with her father and her pet Tobias, a small mouse at the airport years ago. ② One day, Abby’s father was taking her to visit her grandmother and they are not allowed to take a mouse into another country. It was a rule. But Abby put the mouse into her sock in her bag secretly without telling her dad. When they arrived at the airport, they had to be checked by the X-ray machine. Abby felt her legs shaking and her heart beating fast. Unexpectedly, they passed. ③ On the plane, Abby opened up the bag after her dad and the woman next to her fell asleep. Tobias was excited to jump out from the bag. He landed upside down on the woman’s knee. The woman screamed loudly so that many people on the plane heard the voice. At that moment, Abby put Tobias into her bag quickly. But her dad didn’t know at all but slept. ④ After they landed, Abby’s dad ticked (打勾) NO on a paper to: “Are you bringing any live animals into the country?” But a man at the X-ray machine asked Abby to open her bag. Abby had to open and pulled out the sock. Then the man led Abby and her father into a small, dark room. There were some people in uniforms. Tobias was in the sock on the desk. One police officer talked to Abby’s dad. “This is very serious, ” he said, “You have tried to smuggle (偷运) an animal into this country and you have lied on the paper. ” “It’s my fault, ” Abby said in a small voice, “Dad didn’t know I had Tobias. ” The police officer stared at her, “What’s your name? Have you ever been in trouble before?” Abby opened her mouth, but no sound came out. At last, her dad had to pay a big fine ( 罚 款 ) for what Abby did. It cost a lot of money. And Tobias had to go into quarantine (隔离检疫) for six months. ⑤ It must be a real lesson for Abby. From then on, she never breaks the rules any more. ( )From the underlined sentence “Abby felt her legs shaking and her heart beating fast. ” in Paragraph 2, we may know Abby felt ____________. A. pleased B. excited C. nervous D. surprised It’s a pity that deaf people, or those who have hearing problems, can’t enjoy music. But now a vibrating (振动的) suit brings them hope — it can allow them to “feel” music through their skin, rather than hear it. The special suit is able to translate music into some vibrating pulses (节拍). And the users can choose different levels. Chase Burton, 33, a deaf film-maker from Texas, US, has been testing out the suit for four years. He understands that a deaf person’s experience with music is very different. “When I was a kid, I’d lie on the floor so I could feel the vibrations from my brother’s music playing. ” Burton told CNN. Now when he wears the vibrating suit, he says the sound hits different parts of his body. “Maybe it will shake me strongly in my knees first. And then I’ll start to feel the vibrations in my back. And then I’ll feel some pulsations. ” Burton said. The designers have been working on helping a large number of deaf people to have a chance of a musical experience. In 2016, some prototype (样品) suits were tested at a Lady Gaga concert in the US. The suit was also tested at a different concert in Las Vegas in 2019. It was given to 150 audiences (听众) at the concert, where half the audience members were deaf and half could hear. At the same time, the company has been improving the technology and planned to put it into the market soon. And the final goal of the company is to make the technology available to all. “We truly think that anything that has an audio element (元素) can also have a vibrational experience associated with it as well, ” the company’s talent and business development director, Jordan Richardson, told CNN. ( )What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A. The suit. B. The music. C. The concert. D. The technology. It's late evening in the middle of the winter. The snow is deep, but off I go into the wild. Suddenly, I hear it: the howl(嚎叫)of wolves. Excitedly, I walk faster in the direction of the howling. I've been working as a volunteer wolf tracker in Yellowstone National Park for over a year It's my job to follow wolves to record information about them. Like wolves, however, I don't work alone. I'm one of a team of people who have been in a project to help reintroduce wolves to the park. Humans have always feared wolves. From fairy tales to movies, the wolf is always the bad guy —a danger to humans and other animals. In the 1920s, the organizers of the park shared this view about wolves and made the decision to drive them away from the park. As a result, the number of elk (麋鹿)in the park increased. The elk started looking for food near river banks since they didn't have to worry about wolves. This, in turn, stopped trees from growing along the rivers, doing great harm to the environment there. The return of wolves has already made a big difference. To begin with, the elk soon learned to stay away from the rivers, so new trees have been able to grow there. The trees become home to new wildlife, such as birds, and provide food for more animals. The park is now becoming more and more popular with those who want to see wolves in their natural environment. It has also helped the local people make more money. Tourists visit the area, stay in the local hotels, and eat in the local restaurants. Looking at the wild animals and the beautiful sceneries around me, I am amazed at the changes the wolf has made to Yellowstone. And happily, it is playing a good guy in this story. ( )What does the writer mean by the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? A. Wolves are important to Yellowstone. B. Yellowstone has been home to wolves. C. The wolf and the elk live in peace now. D. The number of wolves is growing fast. Fresh green grass, Hundreds of colorful wild flowers. Water running into little pools. Birds making their homes in boxes. The 9, 500-square-metre Augustenborg Botanical Garden may look just like any other well-organized park but there's a difference. It lies on the roofs (屋顶) of industrial and office buildings in the city of Malmo in Sweden.     Green roofs are not a new invention. And now they are getting popular again. The common roofs of a modern city have endless black surfaces with no life or water. Perhaps that's why a garden on a roof becomes such a perfect choice for more and more people.     Green roofs are not just pretty. They also help to moderate the city temperature. The high temperatures on common roofs in the summer can make top floor flats uncomfortably hot. What is more, they play a part in making the cities hotter than the countryside around them, causing the "urban heat-island effect". On a green roof, however, with its plants and water, temperatures change only a little, as they do in a park. This can greatly cut the costs of heating and cooling in the building below.     Also, a green roof takes in rain water, and protects the city drainage (排水) system.   ▲    And small animals and birds can make their homes on it. Thanks to this, the city may become part of nature, rather than something completely separate from it.     While the cost of building such a roof can still be higher, it can be cheaper in the long term as a result of energy savings. And wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to walk out into a garden high above the city's noise and traffic, whether you're at school or in an office or just at home in a ten-floor block? ( )The underlined word "moderate "in Paragraph 3 is the closest in meaning to "________". A. raise                                 B. check                         C. record                                 D. control Every 14days,another language dies. There are many reasons for this. Some people think more common languages have more economic(经济的) power.Because of this, young people choose to learn a common language as they think it is more useful. Another reason is that some languages aren't written down. Guujaaw is a leader of the Haida Nation, whose people have lived on the Queen Charlotte Islands,Canada, for more than 10,000years.Their language is endangered. Traditionally, it wasn't written down, and,as a result, some people are worried that it will die one day.Guujaaw replies to this We talk to each other, listen, visit, and believe in the spoken word. Expressing yourself without writing is natural. However, if Guujaaw's language and others like it are going to stay alive, writing may have to become part of their lives. When a language dies,a lot of knowledge dies with it.To begin with, language is a huge part of the culture of the people who speak it. Language allows speakers to say certain things: words that describe a cultural idea may not translate exactly into another language. Furthermore, many endangered languages have rich spoken cultures. Stories, songs and histories are passed on from older people to younger generations (一代).Elizabeth Lindsey,a language researcher, emphasizes(强调)this." When an elder dies,a library is burned," she says Also, language death affects our knowledge about nature. Local people often have a deep understanding of plants, animals, and the relationship between them. David Harrison, a researcher on endangered languages,reflects,"80% of plant and animal species(物种) have been undiscovered by science But that doesn't mean they're unknown to humans. Many languages are endangered. However,it's not too late.Children often grow up speaking two languages."No one becomes richer by giving up.. one language to learn another,"Harrison said.If children feel both languages are important, they will use both. So, it is necessary that children realize how useful their local language is. ( )The underlined word" affects" in the passage means" " A. waits for B. depends on C. is different from D. has an influence on When I was 17, I read a magazine article about a museum called the McNay, once the home of a watercolorist named Marian McNay. She had requested the community to turn it into a museum after her death. On a sunny Saturday, Sally and I drove over to the museum. She asked, “Do you have the address?” “No, but I’ll know it , there was a picture in the magazine.” “Oh, stop. There it is!” We entered, excited. A group of people sitting in the hall stopped talking and looked at us. “May I help you?” a man, whom I supposed to be a guide, asked. “No,” I said. “We’re fine.” Sally had gone upstairs. The people in the hall kept their eyes on me in surprise. What was their problem? I saw some nice paintings in one room. Suddenly I sensed a man standing behind me. “Where do you think you are?” he asked. I turned quickly. “The McNay Art Museum!” He smiled, shaking his head. “Sorry, the McNay is on New Braunfels Street.” “What’s this place?” I was shocked. “It’s our home.” I called out, “Sally! Come down immediately!” “There’re some really good art works up there.” She stepped down. I pushed her out, waving at the family, “Sorry, but you have a really nice place.” Outside, when I told Sally what happened, she laughed. Thirty years later, a woman came to me in a public place. “Excuse me, did you ever enter a home, long ago, thinking it was the McNay Museum?” “Yes. But how do you know?” “That was my home. I was a teenager sitting in the hall. Before you came over, I never realized what a beautiful place I lived in. You thought it was a museum. My feelings about my home changed after that.” ( )What does the underlined word “it” refer to in the first paragraph? A. The community where McNay lived. B. The picture of the museum McNay. C. The article about the museum McNay. D. The address of the museum McNay. His strange habit makes sense because he’s an environmental scientist who studies how to reduce litter, including things that fall off garbage trucks as they drive down the road. What is even more interesting is that one of Stein’s jobs is in support of an industry behind the plastic shopping bags. Americans use more than 100 billion plastic bags every year. So many end up in trees or along highways that a growing number of cities do not allow them at checkouts. The bags are banned (禁止) in some 90 cities in California, including Los Angeles. Seeing these headwinds, plastic-bag makers are asking scientists like Stein to make the case that their products are not as bad for the planet as most people think. Among the bag makers’ reasons: many cities with bans still allow shoppers to buy paper bags, which are easily recycled but require more energy to produce and transport. And while plastic bags may be ugly to look at, they only make up a small percentage of all garbage on the ground today. The industry has also taken aim at (针对) the product that has appeared to take the place of plastic bags: reusable shopping bags. The stronger a reusable bag is, the longer its life is and the more plastic-bag use it cancels out. However, longer-lasting reusable bags usually require more energy to make. One study found that a cotton bag must be used at least 131 times to be better for the planet than plastic. Environmentalists don’t doubt these points. They hope paper bags will be banned someday too and want shoppers to use the same reusable bags for years. ( )What does the word “headwinds” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Bans on plastic bags. B. Influence of city development. C. Plastic bags hung in trees. D. Headaches caused by garbage. Right now you probably spend most of your time in school. Do you wonder what you are going to do after high school? Will you continue to go to school? Will you learn a trade?Perhaps it is time to think about your choices and to prepare for them. Some day work will be a big part of your life. What kind of job would be right for you?Think about your interests and your skills. You may like to listen to music, dance, play basketball, or work with computers. You may know how to drive a car or how to get along with people.Knowing both your interests and skills will help make a better plan for your career(职业). To get an idea of what work you would like to do, make a list of your interests and a list of your skills.Think about what you have done to be successful in your interests. After that, brainstorm a list of career choices that might match your interests and skills. You can later keep your lists with the projects and documents that can help you achieve the career you want. They can help you know more clearly about your achievements in school and in the world of work. Roberta Zhan, an art designer, finds her work satisfying because it allows her to use her interests and skills. She enjoyed imagining something in her minds eye while she was in school. She took art, design, and computer lessons, and also learned about taking photos on her own. Here is what she says about the meaning of work: "If you have a job you like, work means much more than just making money. It means using your talents, making a contribution(贡献), and getting a real sense of satisfaction from doing a job." ( )(1)The passage is most probably written to A. students B. teachers C. parents D. designers ( )(2)At the beginning, the writer introduces the topic of the passage by A. listing facts B. giving example C. asking questions D. explaining differences ( )(3)Roberta Zhan might be most interested in when she was at school.
