Last Sunday, a McDonald’s customer was arrested after he bit a seagull when it tried to steal his meal. The suspect reportedly attacked the bird in front of the authorities.
Officers from a local unit were on patrol when they witnessed the incident in the city of Plymouth, England, Cornwall Live reports. The man claimed that the bird was trying to steal his McDonald’s, so he grabbed it and bit it.
The animal apparently appeared to be injured as a result of the bite, but it flew away before authorities could inspect it. The suspect admitted to being under the influence of drugs.
The suspect was taken into custody (拘留) since seagulls are a protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. The McDonald’s fan is facing up to six months in prison or a penalty of about $6,300.
In a statement obtained by Cornwall Live, a spokesperson for the local police department said. “He sunk his teeth into it before throwing it to the floor. Officers had seen the incident and immediately went over and took details from him. Around this time, the man volunteered the information that he had taken drugs and it was decided that he should be taken to Derriford Hospital for treatment. The seagull was clearly injured by the incident but flew off before we were able to check on its safety. We don’t know what happened to it afterward.”
Southwest News Service (SWNS) reported that a police spokesperson also stated, “Yesterday we detained a male who attacked and injured a seagull in the city center. Love them or hate them, seagulls are protected under the Act 1981.”

C. To inform readers of the latest news. D. To entertain bird-lovers with a joke.

Grey hair can be the beginning of the end, a silver signal that youth and beauty are facing and only old age remains. And while grey at 60 may not be surprising, many start to turn prematurely as young as 20. If we want to hide it, modern haircare products allow us to easily cover up our natural grey and preserve our youth a little longer. But these days, many people and women in particular, are throwing away the aye (染料) to show their natural colours. Why?
“Research has shown that our hair follicle (毛囊) production can be influenced by factors such as hormones and stress, but some people have a gene to lose pigment (色素) or go bald more than others,” says a report on the BBC website.
For many men, going grey may not be a big deal. It’s now seen as a sign of maturity, says UK newspaper Metro. It uses adjectives such as stylish and unique. But for many women, these qualities don’t seem to apply. Kate Dinota, a New Yorker who started turning grey when she was seven, states that the everyday woman feels a pressure not to age. At 28 and after 14 years, she decided to stop dying her hair and let her grey hair show. And she’s not alone.
Since 2008, worldwide interest in grey hair has increased dramatically, Google Trends shows. This may have been driven by celebrities such as Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga, who both have silver hair. “People are torturing their hair to get the look,” says hair colourist Rita Hazan. Indeed, this trend was what persuaded 30-year-old Stephanie from Texas to stop dying her natural hair two-and-a-half years ago. People were paying money to achieve a look she had already.
But to many women, the transition is not an easy one. Indeed, Kate experienced doubt from others with her initial decision. “People were like, ‘Are you sure? What about your career? You’ re so young?’ Like that seems silly,” she reports. She believes there needs to be better representation of grey-haired women of all ages. In this way it is hoped that, like many men, women will feel more confident about letting it show and will feel more comfortable going grey gracefully.
8. Compared to men, women worry about .
A. looking beautiful B. getting old
C. appearing immature D. keeping fit
9. Why does silver hair gain popularity?
A. To follow personalities. B. To save some money.
C. To fit in with colleagues. D. To appear knowledgeable.
10. What is Kate Dinota’s attitude towards women showing natural grey hair?
A. Disapproving. B. Uncertain. C. Supportive. D. Objective.
11. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The End of Grey Hair B. Gladly Going Grey
C. Youth Is Fading D. Getting Fashionable
D
Putting food into the microwave for a couple of minutes may seem totally harmless, but Europe’s quick-cooking ovens emit as much carbon as nearly 7 million cars, a new study has found, and the problem is growing. Due to the fact that costs are falling and kitchen appliances (厨房电器) are becoming symbols of status, owners are throwing many microwaves after an average of eight years. This is pushing rising sales of new microwaves which are expected to reach 135 million annually in the EU by the end of the decade.
A study by the University of Manchester worked out the emissions of carbon dioxide — the main greenhouse gas responsible for climate change — at every stage of microwaves, from production to waste disposal. “It is electricity consumption by microwaves that has the biggest impact on the environment,” say the authors, who also calculate that the emissions from using 19 microwaves over a year are the same as those from a car. According to the same study, efforts to reduce consumption should focus on improving consumer awareness and behaviour to use appliances more efficiently. For example, electricity consumption by microwaves can be reduced by adjusting the time of cooking to the type of food.
However, David Reay, professor of carbon management argues that, although microwaves use a great deal of energy, their emissions are minor compared to those from cars. In the UK alone and these emit way more than all the emissions from microwaves in the EU. Backing this up, recent data show that passenger cars in the UK emitted 69m tonnes of CO₂ in 2015. This is 10 times the amount this new microwave oven study estimates for annual emissions for all the microwave ovens in the whole of the EU.
Further, the energy used by microwaves is lower than any other form of cooking. Among common kitchen appliances used for cooking, microwaves are the most energy efficient, followed by a stove and finally a standard oven. Thus, rising microwave sales could be seen as a positive thing.
12. What contributes to the increasing consumption of new microwaves?
A. Various functions. B. More carbon emission.
C. Declining prices. D. Further improved quality.
13. What is the advice from the study by the University of Manchester?
A. Changing microwave users’ habits.
B. Stopping using microwaves gradually.
C. Carrying out more research on microwaves.
D. Replacing microwaves with other appliances.
14. How is paragraph 3 developed?
A. By giving definition. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By making comparison. D. By concluding viewpoints.
15. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. Microwaves are probably not to blame.
B. Energy efficiency is not a top priority.
C. People should be talked into using microwaves less often.
D. Stoves consume the least energy among kitchen appliances.

A Disapproving. B. Uncertain. C. Supportive. D. Objective.
11. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The End of Grey Hair B. Gladly Going Grey
C. Youth Is Fading D. Getting Fashionable
B 9. A 10. C 11. B

根据文章最后一段“She believes there needs to be better representation of grey-haired women of all ages. In this way it is hoped that, like many men, women will feel more confident about letting it show and will feel more comfortable going grey gracefully.(她认为,需要有更好的代表不同年龄段的灰发女性的形象。这样一来,希望女性能像许多男性一样,对自己的白发更加自信,并且能优雅地老去)”可知,女性被希望能像许多男性一样对自己的白发更加自信,可推理出Kate Dinota支持女性展示自然白发。故选C项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“But these days, many people and women in particular, are throwing away the dye(染料) to show their natural colours. Why?(但是现在,很多人,特别是女性,正在扔掉染料,展示她们的自然色彩。为什么呢?)”、第三段“For many men, going grey may not be a big deal. It’s now seen as a sign of maturity, says UK newspaper Metro. It uses adjectives such as stylish and unique. But for many women, these qualities don’t seem to apply (对许多男性来说,头发变白可能并不是什么大事。英国《地铁报》称,这现在被视为一种成熟的象征。它使用诸如时尚和独特之类的形容词。但对许多女性来说,这些特质似乎并不适用)”、第四段“This may have been driven by celebrities such as Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga, who both have silver hair.( 这可能是受诸如Ariana Grande和Lady Gaga等名人的影响,她们都有银发)”以及最后一段“But to many women, the transition is not an easy one.
A Various functions. B. More carbon emission.
C. Declining prices. D. Further improved quality.
13. What is the advice from the study by the University of Manchester?
A. Changing microwave users’ habits.
B. Stopping using microwaves gradually.
C. Carrying out more research on microwaves.
D. Replacing microwaves with other appliances.
14. How is paragraph 3 developed?
A. By giving definition. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By making comparison. D. By concluding viewpoints.
15. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. Microwaves are probably not to blame.
B. Energy efficiency is not a top priority.
C. People should be talked into using microwaves less often.
D. Stoves consume the least energy among kitchen appliances.
C 13. A 14. C 15. A

根据第一段中“Due to the fact that costs are falling and kitchen appliances(厨房电器) are becoming symbols of status, owners are throwing many microwaves after an average of eight years. This is pushing rising sales of new microwaves which are expected to reach 135 million annually in the EU by the end of the decade.(由于成本下降和厨房电器正成为地位的象征,许多微波炉平均使用8年之后就被扔掉了。这推动了新微波炉销量的增长,预计到本十年末,新微波炉在欧盟的年销量将达到1.35亿台)”可知,价格下降是导致新微波炉消费量增加的原因之一。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“According to the same study, efforts to reduce consumption should focus on improving consumer awareness and behaviour to use appliances more efficiently.( 根据同一项研究,减少消费的努力应侧重于提高消费者的意识和行为,以更有效地使用电器)”可知,曼彻斯特大学的研究给出的建议是改变微波炉用户的使用习惯。故选A项。
根据第三段“However, David Reay, professor of carbon management argues that, although microwaves use a great deal of energy, their emissions are minor compared to those from cars. In the UK alone and these emit way more than all the emissions from microwaves in the EU. Backing this up, recent data show that passenger cars in the UK emitted 69m tonnes of CO₂ in 2015. This is 10 times the amount this new microwave oven study estimates for annual emissions for all the microwave ovens in the whole of the EU.( 然而,碳管理教授大卫·雷伊(David Reay)认为,尽管微波炉消耗大量能源,但与汽车相比,它们的排放量很小。
根据最后一段“Further, the energy used by microwaves is lower than any other form of cooking. Among common kitchen appliances used for cooking, microwaves are the most energy efficient, followed by a stove and finally a standard oven. Thus, rising microwave sales could be seen as a positive thing.( 此外,微波所消耗的能量比其他任何烹饪方式都要低。在用于烹饪的常用厨房电器中,微波炉是最节能的,其次是炉子,最后是标准烤箱。因此,微波炉销量的上升可以被视为一件积极的事情)”可知,在常见的用于烹饪的厨房电器中,微波炉是最节能的,而且其能源使用量低于任何其他形式的烹饪方式,所以微波炉销量的上升可以被视为一件积极的事情。这意味着微波炉可能不应该被指责(导致过多碳排放等问题)。故选A项。

It’s my greatest privilege to share my thoughts and feelings here about my joining the running club. Four months ago, with high school coming along, I was unprecedentedly exhausted, overwhelmed with tremendous homework and numbers of exams on a weekly basis.
Right when I was getting through the toughest time, however, a random move led me to join the club, which has fundamentally transformed my life. Not only did the regular training strengthen my body, but it also significantly decreased my stress and anxiety. In addition, I benefited so immensely that I even recommended a number of my classmates to be part of the sport.
Now I am incredibly appreciative, for it was running that helped me build up confidence, and find the strength and the courage to embrace life. So, let’s go running, for a better version of ourselves and a bright future.
