Sarah often helped out at her dad’s restaurant, but today she felt different—she was given the duty of serving customers. Excited, yet nervous, she carefully carried a salad to Table 6. Her excitement quickly turned to anxiety (焦虑) when she saw Kassy, a popular girl from school, sitting there with her friends. Feeling shy and afraid, Sarah ducked behind the front desk to avoid being seen.
Though an excellent student, Sarah often felt out of place among her wealthy (富有的) classmates. She remembered how Kassy used to make fun of her and worried that others might do the same to her for working at a restaurant. When Sarah’s dad found her hiding, she didn’t know what to say. He suggested that she should take a break.
Turning back to the kitchen, Sarah felt bad for letting her dad down. To her surprise, Hannah, one of Kassy’s friends, came over and gave her a big hug. And she also praised Sarah for her hard work. Her comfort gave Sarah the strength she needed.
With confidence, Sarah returned to the dining area and brought the check to Kassy’s table. When Kassy tried to make fun of her, Sarah and Hannah did a silly “crab dance” and laughed together. As she crossed the dining room, Sarah realized she didn’t feel embarrassed. Whether Kassy liked her family’s restaurant or not, it didn’t matter.
As Sarah returned to the front desk, she felt a warm sense of pride, knowing the restaurant was special to her, no matter what others thought. She understood that hard work and kindness were what really mattered. From then on, she started to enjoy her new role with confidence and pride.
24. Why did Sarah feel worried when she saw Kassy?
A Kassy often made fun of her at school.
B. Kassy was the most popular girl at school.
C. She was serving customers for the first time.
D. She didn’t want others to know her poor family.
25. What did Hannah do to Sarah?
A. Praised her. B. Compared her to Kassy.
C. Laughed at her. D. Offered to help her serve.
26. What did Sarah learn from her experience?
A. Never make fun of true friends. B. It’s necessary to see the good in others.
C. Be yourself, no matter what others think. D. The support of family is always important.
C
Asking ChatGPT 4, an AI chatbot, to write a 100-word email might take just a few seconds. However, this convenience leads to big problems for the environment.
One of the main problems is the “water footprint (水足迹 )”, the total water the AI chatbot uses in its lifetime. AI depends on data centers, which house servers (服务器) that store and manage data. Once turned on, the servers produce heat. To cool them down, engineers use pipes to bring in cold water from cooling towers to get rid of the heat.
Data centers operate 24-7, making them very “thirsty”. According to The Washington Post, for every 100-word email that it creates, ChatGPT 4 needs 519 milliliters (毫升) of water, or a little more than a bottle. Each year, ChatGPT 4 uses over 435 million liters of water for writing emails alone—enough to support a common US family for 1,050 years.
Meanwhile, data centers are “hungry” for electricity. The Washington Post noted that writing a 100-word email requires 0.14 kilowatt-hours of electricity, which can power 14 LED light bulbs (灯 泡) for one hour. Every year in the US, ChatGPT 4 uses up more than 120,000 megawatt-hours of power just to help write work emails. This is enough to support all homes in Washington DC for 20 days.
That’s not all. An AI chatbot’s “carbon footprint” (碳足迹) starts long before the chatbot greets the public. For example, training ChatGPT 3 produced around 502 tons of carbon. This is the same as driving 112 petrol (汽油) cars for a year, according to Shirin Dora, a researcher at Loughborough University in the UK. Besides, building data centers is also a source of CO2.
Now, businesses are looking for different ways to make AI more environmentally friendly. Microsoft uses cold metal plates with tubes of cold water to cool equipment (设备 ), which reduces water usage. Renewable energy is also helpful; for example, Tencent’s data center in Tianjin is powered by solar energy (太阳能).
27. How are the servers in data centers cooled down?
A. By using fans. B. By using ice. C. By using cold water. D. By using solar energy.
28. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Engineers use cold pipes to cool the house servers down.
B. Renewable energy is used to make AI more environmental.
C. Data centers don’t need to cost a lot of electricity to operate.
D. Asking ChatGPT 4 can solve big problems for the environment.
29. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Ways to operate AI. B. Hidden costs behind AI.
C. Protection of AI data. D. Perfect jobs done by AI.
D
When you finally finish your homework and get to relax, what do you do? Do you lie on your bed and scroll (滚屏) through your phone? Many people find that this kind of entertainment only brings boredom and emptiness (空虚).
Opposite to what many people may think, play isn’t just a waste of time. Having the ability to play and relax meaningfully during your leisure time is important.
“Leisure doesn’t improve quality of life unless one knows how to use it effectively (有效地),” James Wallman, the writer of Time and How to Spend It, told CNBC Make It, explaining that some experiences are “junk experiences” while others are like “superfoods”.
The “superfood” activities put you into a state of “flow”, which is “about being in the present zone [and] really enjoying yourself”, added Wallman. Any pleasurable activity that truly challenges us has the potential (潜力) to lead to the flow-state.
These “superfoods” help you achieve a higher “leisure quotient” (LQ, 玩商). LQ is an index (指数) used to describe one’s ability to relax and play. A high LQ usually means that a person has good control over their life, knows how to develop their potential and keeps a balanced lifestyle that makes them healthier and happier, according to China Daily.
Psychological (心理学的) research shows that people with high LQ scores feel happier and generally avoid depression (抑郁) and other mental illnesses. Meanwhile, Kenichi Ohmae, a Japanese management expert, points out that those who can play will succeed.
Instead of doing passive activities like scrolling through short videos, people with high LQ scores actively choose activities that suit their interests and strengths, giving them continuous positive feedback.
According to Wallman, examples of this positive feedback include: a memorable story you can share with others; a new skill or a different world view; greater engagement with the real world; and improved relationships or a higher social status.
The next time you find yourself bored with nothing to do, try engaging in some experiences that could benefit you or add to your life. It’s never too late to improve your LQ!
30. According to James Wallman, what are “superfood” activities?
A. Activities that increase your energy. B. Activities that don’t require much effort.
C. Activities that make you feel bored and empty. D. Activities that are both enjoyable and challenging.
31 What does the LQ index describe?
A. The ability to balance work and life. B. The potential to lead a successful life.
C. Skills in meaningful play and relaxation. D. The ability to manage difficult conditions.
32. What do people with high LQ scores do?
A. They are active in various activities. B. They spend much of their time outdoors.
C. They are good at managing their work time. D. They choose activities that match their potential.
33. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Getting to relax after homework is a “junk experience”.
B. Activities with positive feedback help to improve our LQ.
C. Activities with passive feedback may improve quality of life.
D. LQ index helps people avoid depression and mental illnesses.

阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题
This summer I read a book called The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. It tells a touching story told through the eyes of a dog named Enzo.
Enzo lives with his owner Denny, a professional car racer and experiences the ups and downs of life with him. He sees Denny work hard to succeed and go through the unexpected death of his wife.
The book shows the heartwarming relationship between Enzo and Denny. Denny treats Enzo as a close friend and family member, telling him his secret of racing in the rain. Enzo is loyal (忠诚的) to his owner. He always supports and comforts Denny in his own way during the darkest periods of Denny’s life. Seeing their special relationship moved me a lot.
While reading I discovered that the art of racing in the rain is a metaphor (比喻). When it “rains” in life, unexpected challenges suddenly come, just like how a car skids (打滑) during a race. What can you do? Denny, a master (大师) of racing in the rain, taught me a lot about such challenges.
Stein writes in the book: “There is no dishonor (丢脸的) in losing the race. There is only dishonor in not racing because you are afraid to lose.” From his words, I learned that we should be brave when facing challenges instead of running away from them. Besides, we need to look on the bright side because, as Stein says, “The car goes where your eyes go.” This means that how we view difficulties influences the result.
The Art of Racing in the Rain is a book about love and life. It touched me and taught me a lot.

31. What does the LQ index describe?

While reading, I discovered that the art of racing in the rain is a metaphor (比喻).
34. Who is the writer of The Art of Racing in the Rain?
