She suffered brain cancer and her health got worse despite some medical treatment. But she realized that in a way, she was luckier than some other people. She had insurance to help pay for her medical care. But Ms. McIntyre and her husband, Mr. Gregory, knew that many people with cancer face tough decisions because of the costs of medical care and wind up owing far more than they can pay. Though her health was failing, Ms. McIntyre decided to help pay off the medical debts of as many people as she possibly could. The couple began donating money to a group called RIP Medical Debt, which is committed to working to pay off the unpaid medical debts of others. The group can pay off medical bills for about 100 times less money than they cost. In other words, for every 100 donated, the group can pay off 10,000 in unpaid medical bills. Unfortunately, Ms. McIntyre passed away before long. Mr. Gregory posted a message for Ms. McIntyre on her social media accounts. “If you’re reading this, I have passed away,” the post began. Then the post explained, “To celebrate my life, I’ve arranged to buy up others’ medical debts and then des troy the debts.” The couple had set up a page on a website to raise money for this purpose. They had hoped to raise about $20,000. Nevertheless, Ms. McIntyre’s last post attracted a lot of attention. The donations on her web page quickly passed the total goal. In less than a week, the site had raised 10 times more than expected and the donations are still coming in. By November 22, 2023, Ms. McIntyre’s web page had raised over $627,000, or enough money to pay off about $60 million in medical debts. Mr. Gregory planned a special event in December to celebrate Ms. McIntyre’s life and to announce how many millions of dollars of medical debts her efforts had paid for. 4. Why did Ms. McIntyre feel luckier than some other people? A. The doctors eventually cured her. B. Her disease didn’t become worse. C. She had a decent job before being ill. D. She had security about medical care. 5. How did Ms. McIntyre and her husband help others? A. By paying for their daily debts. B. By giving away money to them. C. By paying off their debts from treatments. D. By purchasing medical insurance for them. 6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A The public involvement. B. The couple’s commitment. C. The operation of a website. D. The increase of medical debts. 7. Which of the following words can best describe Ms. McIntyre? A. Humorous and elegant. B. Influential and generous. C Cautious and promising. D. Enthusiastic and adaptable. D 5. C 6. A 7. 根据第一段中的“But she realized that in a way, she was luckier than some other people. She had insurance to help pay for her medical care. (但她意识到,在某种程度上,她比其他一些人幸运。她有保险来帮助支付她的医疗费用。)”可知,麦金太尔觉得自己比其他人幸运因为她有医疗保障。故选D。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Though her health was failing, Ms. McIntyre decided to help pay off the medical debts of as many people as she possibly could. The couple began donating money to a group called RIP Medical Debt, which is committed to working to pay off the unpaid medical debts of others. (尽管她的健康状况每况愈下,麦金太尔还是决定帮助尽可能多的人还清医疗债务。这对夫妇开始向一个名为RIP医疗债务的组织捐款,该组织致力于为他人偿还未付的医疗债务)”可知,麦金太尔女士和她的丈夫通过偿还他人的治疗债务帮助别人。故选C。 【6题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第四段“The couple had set up a page on a website to raise money for this purpose. They had hoped to raise about $20,000. Nevertheless, Ms. McIntyre’s last post attracted a lot of attention. The donations on her web page quickly passed the total goal. In less than a week, the site had raised 10 times more than expected and the donations are still coming in. The couple began donating money to a group called RIP Medical Debt, which is committed to working to pay off the unpaid medical debts of others. (尽管她的健康状况每况愈下,麦金太尔还是决定帮助尽可能多的人还清医疗债务。这对夫妇开始向一个名为RIP医疗债务的组织捐款,该组织致力于为他人偿还未付的医疗债务)”可知,麦金太尔女士很慷慨,根据第四段中的“Nevertheless, Ms. Rita Kottasz, a marketing professor at Kingston University, defines PSD as “a feeling of emptiness and upset when something you love finishes”. This applies to TV shows, books, or video games, creating a desire for more. The concept of PSD gained popularity on social media and fan blogs in the mid-2010s, particularly during the Golden Age of TV. Kottasz prefers not to use the term PSD, instead calling it “consumer saudade”, a Portuguese word meaning nostalgic (怀旧的) longing. However, a journal editor convinced her to use PSD due to its established use outside of research. Kottasz and her colleagues published a 15-item classification scale for PSD based on interviews with fans who felt sad after their favorite things ended. Common emotions included frustration, disappointment, sadness, and emptiness. Some fans even felt that life was less complete or that they had lost “best friends”. While PSD is often associated with TV shows, Kottasz is exploring its connection to other media, such as the abrupt break of K-pop band BTS (防弹少年团) and novels like Harry Potter. Younger people are more affected than older ones, partially due to on-demand streaming and constant new content pushes from businesses like Netflix. Contrary to popular belief, binge-watching does not seem to trigger PSD. Instead, long-term consumption may be a factor. Kottasz thinks watching a show over several seasons or reading novels across many years strengthens a person’s relationship to the characters. In her 2019 paper, she cites a Harry Potter devotee who started reading the series at age 9 and was “cruelly left behind’ after the final book and film released years later. But it isn’t quite as simple as saying the end of a show or novel controls our emotional state. Brian Kong, a Chicago-based psychologist, is concerned that PSD might imply a causal relationship between low moods and a program’s end. Instead, he says that when viewers feel lasting negativity, TV consumption might be acting as an anesthetic(麻醉剂) for a deeper psychological issue, like how some people with anxiety or depression drink alcohol. Put another way, the low mood already existed, and watching the series only masked it. 8. Which of the following is a common reaetion among fans experiencing PSD? A. A fresh sense of purpose for life. B. A deep satisfaction after the show. C. A great sense of loss of best friends. D. A strong desire for a new hobby 9. What does the underlined word “binge-watching” in Paragraph 5 mean? A. Reviewing every detail of a TV show day and night. B. Watching some episodes of a TV show in one sitting. C. Following the episodes of a TV show for a long duration. D. Reading a book series while watching the TV adaptation. 10. What does Brian Kong imply in the last paragraph? A. PSD covers up a deeper psychological issue. B. Viewers with negativity like drinking alcohol. C. TV consumption is the root cause of low moods D. Watching TV series can address psychological issues. 11. What might the following paragraphs focus on? A. The solutions to post-series depression. B. The marketing strategies of TV shows. C. The difference between PSD and nostalgla. D. The impact of social media on fan emotions. 【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. A 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了“剧后抑郁(PSD)”的 概念、相关表现、影响因素,及对其与心理问题关联的看法。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Some fans even felt that life was less complete or that they had lost ‘best friends’.(一些粉丝甚至觉得生活不够完整,或者他们失去了‘最好的朋友’。)”可知,经历‘剧后抑郁(PSD)’的粉丝常见反应是感觉失去了‘好朋友’,即有很强的失落感。故选C项。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第五段“Contrary to popular belief, binge-watching does not seem to trigger PSD. Instead, long-term consumption may be a factor.(与普遍看法相反, 似乎不会引发PSD。相反,长期消费可能是一个因素。)”可知,与长期观看相对的是binge-watching,长期观看是长时间追看,那binge-watching意思应是一次性看几集(短时间内集中看完一些内容)。故选B项。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。由文章最后一段中“Brian Kong, a Chicago-based psychologist, is concerned that PSD might imply a causal relationship between low moods and a program’s end. Instead, he says that when viewers feel lasting negativity, TV consumption might be acting as an anesthetic(麻醉剂) for a deeper psychological issue, like how some people with anxiety or depression drink alcohol. (芝加哥心理学家Brian Kong担心PSD可能意味着情绪低落与节目结束之间存在因果关系。相反,他说,当观众感到持续的消极情绪时,电视消费可能会成为更深层次心理问题的麻醉剂,比如一些焦虑或抑郁的人如何饮酒。)”可知,PSD可能掩盖了更深层次的心理问题,看电视只是起到一种麻醉作用,而负面情绪原本就存在。故选A项。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。由文章最后一段“Brian Kong, a Chicago-based psychologist, is concerned that PSD might imply a causal relationship between low moods and a program’s end. Instead, he says that when viewers feel lasting negativity, TV consumption might be acting as an anesthetic(麻醉剂) for a deeper psychological issue, like how some people with anxiety or depression drink alcohol. Put another way, the low mood already existed, and watching the series only masked it.(芝加哥心理学家Brian Kong担心PSD可能意味着情绪低落与节目结束之间存在因果关系。 故选A项。 D In our information-driven society, shaping our worldview through the media is similar to forming an opinion about someone solely based on a picture of their foot. While the media might not deliberately deceive us, it often fails to provide a comprehensive view of reality. Consequently, the question arises: Where, then, shall we get our information from if not from the media? Who can we trust? How about experts- people who devote their working lives to understanding their chosen slice of the world? However, even experts can fall prey to the allure of oversimplification, leading to the “single perspective instinct” that hampers (阻碍) our ability to grasp the intricacies (错综复杂) of the world. Simple ideas can be appealing because they offer a sense of understanding and certainty. And it is easy to take off down a slippery slope, from one attention-grabbing simple idea to a feeling that this idea beautifully explains, or is the beautiful solution for, lots of other things. The world becomes simple that way. Yet, when we embrace a singular cause or solution for all problems, we risk oversimplifying complex issues. For instance, championing the concept of equality may lead us to view all problems through the lens of inequality and see resource distribution as the sole panacea. However, such rigidity prevents us from seeing the multidimensional nature of challenges and hinders true comprehension of reality. This “single perspective instinct” ultimately clouds our judgment and restricts our capacity to tackle complex issues effectively. Being always in favor of or always against any particular idea makes you blind to information that doesn’t fit your perspective. This is usually a bad approach if you would like to understand reality. Instead, constantly test your favorite ideas for weaknesses. Be humble about the extent of your expertise. Be curious about new information that doesn’t fit, and information from other fields. And rather than talking only to people who agree with you, or collecting examples that fit your ideas, consult people who contradict you, disagree with you, and put forward different ideas as a great resource for understanding the world. If this means you don’t have time to form so may opinions, so what? Wouldn’t you rather have few opinions that are right than many that are wrong? 12. What does the underlined word “allure” in Para.2 probably mean? A. Temptation. B. Tradition. C. Convenience. D. Consequence. 13. Why are simple ideas appealing according to the passage? A. They meet people’s demand for high efficiency. B. They generate a sense of complete understanding. C. They are raised and supported by multiple experts. D. They reflect the opinions of like-minded individuals. 14. What will the author probably agree with? A. Simplifying matters releases energy for human brains. B. Constant tests on our ideas help make up for our weakness. C. A well-founded opinion counts more than many shallow ones. D. People who disagree with us often have comprehensive views. 15. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A. Embracing Disagreement: Refusing Overcomplexity B. Simplifying Information: Enhancing Comprehension C. Understanding Differences: Establishing Relationships D. Navigating Complexity: Challenging Oversimplification 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是说明文。短文主要讲述了在信息驱动的社会中,塑造我们的世界观经常无法提供全面的现实视角。简单的想法可能很吸引人,但是我们会冒着过度简化复杂问题的风险,最终会影响我们的判断力,限制我们有效解决复杂问题的能力。我们应该与持有不同观点的人交谈并试图理解他们的观点,形成正确的观点。 【12题详解】 词义猜测题。根据第二段“leading to the “single perspective instinct” that hampers(阻碍)our ability to grasp the intricacies of the world. (导致“单一视角本能”, 阻碍我们掌握世界的复杂性)”可知,专家受到过度简化的allure,也会导致单一视觉,不能掌握世界的复杂性,因此推断此处表示受到了过度简化的诱惑,allure在这里指的是“诱惑”。故选A。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段的“Simple ideas can be appealing because they offer a sense of understanding and certainty. (简单的想法可能很有吸引力,因为它们提供了一种理解和确定性)”可知,简单的想法具有吸引力是因为它们产生一种完全理解的感觉。故选B。 14题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Instead, constantly test your favorite ideas for weaknesses. Be humble about the extent of your expertise. Be curious about new information that doesn’t fit, and information from other fields. And rather than talking only to people who agree with you, or collecting examples that fit your ideas, consult people who contradict you, disagree with you, and put forward different ideas as a great resource for understanding the world.(相反,要不断测试你最喜欢的想法的弱点。 根据第一段内容“In our information-driven society, shaping our worldview through the media is similar to forming an opinion about someone solely based on a picture of their foot. While the media might not deliberately deceive us, it often fails to provide a comprehensive view of reality.(在我们这个信息驱动的社会中,通过媒体塑造我们的世界观就像仅仅根据一个人的脚的照片来形成对他们的看法一样,它经常无法提供全面的现实视角)”,第二段的“However, even experts can fall prey to the allure of oversimplification, leading to the “single perspective instinct” that hampers(阻碍)our ability to grasp the intricacies of the world.(然而,即使是专家也会受到过度简化的诱惑,导致“单一视角本能”,阻碍我们掌握世界的复杂性)”以及倒数第三的“And rather than talking only to people who agree with you, or collecting examples that fit your ideas, consult people who contradict you, disagree with you, and put forward different ideas as a great resource for understanding the world. It happens from time to time that after a whole morning of studying, you are tired in the afternoon. It is then that you may want to eat something sweet, perhaps a sweet drink or a chocolate bar to lift your mood. ___16___ But a study suggests that sugar can make you feel worse rather than lift your mood. The German and UK researchers collected data from 31 studies involving nearly 1,300 adults. ___17___ Those emotions include anger, alertness, depression and tiredness. They found that people who have too much sugar become more tired and less alert within an hour, and that these feelings become more intense over time. According to researchers, when people take in sugar, their blood sugar levels rise rapidly, leading to a burst of energy and a short “feel good” period. However, as they begin to digest the sugar, their blood sugar levels decrease quickly, leading to a bad feeling. ___18___ As with caffeine, this prevents the body from relaxing, leaving people being tired and less alert. ___19___ According to WHO, it is healthy to have the sugars found naturally in fruit, vegetables and milk, so long as they make up less than 5 percent of our daily total energy intake. So the next time you feel tired and can’t concentrate on study and work perhaps you should think twice before you bite into a chocolate bar. There are still other ways to relieve tiredness. ___20___ A. Maybe a little exercise at midday is a better idea. B. So cutting sweet food out of the diet is a good choice. C. After deep consideration, Joyce decided to work on a math magic quiz on the circuit board (电路板). The next day in school, Mangat Madam arrived in the classroom and all the children submitted their topics for the math exhibition. They all chose to work in a group except Joyce. In the following days, Joyce gathered all the materials for the project such as wires, bulbs (灯泡), a switch and a thin plywood board (胶合板). He worked out a few mathematical basic operations (运算) to be fixed on the board so that when the wire of the circuit touched the right answer, the bulb glowed. Joyce completed the project and was happy with the result. The evening before the exhibition, while packing his school bags, Joyce again checked the project to see if it was working fine. Alas! All the lights that were to glow did not seem to light at all. Without finding the reason, Joyce was tensed up. And then Karan’s team showed their project. With joint efforts, they made it. Finally, the teacher announced Karan’s team was the winner. All the children burst into thunderous applause on hearing that. Karan and his partners walked up to the front with great excitement. Unfortunately Ms. The operation of a website. D. The increase of medical debts. 7. Which of the following words can best describe Ms. McIntyre? A. Humorous and elegant. B. Influential and generous. C. Cautious and promising. D. Enthusiastic and adaptable. C Feeling discouraged after a favorite show ends is common, and it even has an unofficial term: post-series depression (PSD). D In our information-driven society, shaping our worldview through the media is similar to forming an opinion about someone solely based on a picture of their foot. Silence!” Mangat Madam suddenly entered the class. She announced next week would be math week. “I’d like each of you to work on a project. You could do it individually or in a group.” She instructed. “The topic for the project needs approving tomorrow and it has to be displayed at the math week exhibition. The best project will be awarded and there is also a surprise gift from my side,” she added. Joyce, who is extremely good at math, sat in the corner seat of the first bench with Karan , an average. Karan asked Joyce if they could work on the math project together. Joyce replied in a prideful tone, "Ha-ha you want to join me. I think I will do the project on my own.” Joyce wanted to get awarded and the surprise gift all for himself from Mangat Madam. However, he decided to take the same project to the school as he couldn’t change the topic at the last minute. Then came the next day, and everybody was fascinated by the exhibition. 注意:续写词数应为150左右。 It was Joyce’s turn to display his project. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, the teacher announced Karan’s team was the winner. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
