Last winter, I woke up in a stone bedroom in Almeria, Spain, where I was working on a volunteer project. My morning walks often led me past a farm with a rotting pile of eggplants that grew larger over two months, along with unsold oranges.
I thought that the answer to so much waste might be a simple one, but instead its complication surprised me. I inquired Richard, the founder of an environmental NGO working closely with farmers why this dumping happened and he let out a deep sigh of frustration. “Most of the time it’s just a pure amount here…there is the infrastructure missing, the knowledge missing.”
The region’s large greenhouses are visible from space, yet the diversity of farms makes it difficult to deal with the waste issue uniformly. Richard and I discussed the challenges faced by farmers, who often lack waste management facilities, especially smaller ones struggling to make ends meet. Biowaste, including plastic clips and twine, ends up in the ocean, visible along Almeria’s beaches. While some farmers are aware of the problem, the costs of tackling it are often prohibitive.
Spanish agriculture extends beyond fruit and vegetables; in 2015, Spain became the EU’s largest exporter of pork. The farming sector in Spain has adapted to changing consumer demands and increased animal product consumption. One solution proposed is to recycle biowaste as animal feed, reducing the need for imports of soy and corn, primarily from Brazil. However, the distance between crop and livestock areas makes this solution energy-consuming and costly for small-scale farmers. Thankfully, there are some very promising approaches being carried out, such as biochar (生物炭) and regenerative energy production.
After witnessing the waste, I feel a deep compassion for farmers, who are part of a small community feeding much of Europe. They desire change and long for concrete support. The issue of food production and management is our common responsibility, and we must work together with farmers to heal our world.
4. What does the author imply about the waste problem in Almeria?
A. A situation largely ignored. B. A problem easy to manage.
C. A challenge unique to Almeria. D. An issue complex to approach.
5. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. The same solutions apply across farms.
B. Small farms struggle financially with waste.
C. Farmers are unconscious of the waste problem.
D. Many farms complicate the waste management.
6. Why is turning plant waste into animal feed impractical?
A. High transportation costs. B. Expensive high-tech equipment.
C. Multi-step processing techniques. D. Low nutritional value for animals.
7. What is the key to solving food waste?
A. Self-change by farmers. B. Innovation in technology.
C. Widespread social participation. D. Direct government involvement.

The brain of a fruit fly is small enough to fit on the head of a pin, yet it contains nearly 140,000 neurons (神经元). No wonder mapping this complex structure took 5 years and over 200 people — a monumental project discussed in a body of papers.
Brain mapping is one of the most complex tasks in neuroscience, where minor errors can significantly affect outcomes. Remarkably, some contributors to the project were volunteers from diverse backgrounds, teaming up with neuroscientists to confirm results produced by artificial intelligence (AI), showcasing how amateur science can enhance data-hungry research.
The FlyWire connectome (连接组) map developed by Mala Murthy’s team at Princeton University, is helping to advance neuroscience. This project created a “wiring diagram” of neuron connections and discovered 4,581 cell types, many in lesser-studied brain regions. Researchers worldwide are using this map to study neuronal control of feeding behaviors of flies. Additionally, a team from the University of California uses it to understand how specialized neurons in the fly brain process visual information. By studying the intricate structure of its brain, scientists can better understand how human brain works and the fundamental mechanisms that govern neural system.
Volunteers were crucial in labeling the map and double-checking its accuracy. The project initiated with electron microscopy images of the fly brain, which were used to train AI to create a wiring diagram. Fact-checking millions of data points was labor-intensive; thus, project co-leader Sebastian developed EyeWire, an interactive game-like platform where top-performing volunteers were picked. Those shortlisted were then trained to proofread AI-generated data in the real project, a task that would have required 33 full-time neuroscientists for a year. Murthy noted that this cooperative approach could be applied to larger projects.
Increasingly, amateur scientists are involved in more research areas, helping fill data gap. The unique aspect of the fly-brain project is that citizen scientists assist full-time scientists confirming their findings, a model that may have broader applications in our data-rich world.
8. What is a highlight of the brain mapping project?
A Getting rid of unwanted outcomes. B. Partnering amateurs with scientists.
C. Using AI to produce desired results. D. Making contributions to universities.
9. What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 3?
A. Straightforward. B. Administrative. C. Mature. D. Delicate.
10. Why did researchers develop EyeWire?
A. To initiate the project. B. To select candidates.
C. To enhance interaction. D. To construct platforms.
11. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Understanding fly behavior: citizen science’s role in public health.
B. Unlocking fly brain secrets: concerted science and amateur power.
C. Decoding fly brain for human emotions: findings from volunteers.
D. Probing into fly brain connections: insects put scientists to the test.
D
If you proudly believe you’re right in a disagreement with a friend or colleague, a new study suggests why you may actually be wrong. Researchers found that people naturally assume they have all the information they need to make a decision or support their position, even when they do not. The researchers called it the “illusion of information adequacy”.
“We found that, in general, people don’t stop to think whether there might be more information that would help them make a more informed decision,” said study co-author Angus Fletcher, a professor of English at The Ohio State University. “If you give people a few pieces of information that seems to line up, most will say ‘that sounds about right’ and go with that.”
The study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, involved 1,261 Americans who participated online. They were split into three groups who read an article about a fictional school that lacked adequate water. One group read an article that only gave reasons why the school should merge with another that had adequate water; a second group’s article only gave reasons for staying separate and hoping for other solutions; and the third group read all the arguments for the schools merging and for staying separate.
The findings showed that the two groups who read half the story — either just the pro-merging or just the anti-merging arguments — still believed they had enough information to make a good decision. “Those with half the information actually show greater certainty in their decision to merge or remain separate than those who had the complete story,” Fletcher said.
These discoveries enhance our understanding of naïve realism, where individuals perceive their personal viewpoints as the factual reality, as Fletcher noted. Research on naïve realism often focuses on how people have different understandings of the same situation.
“Your first move when you disagree with someone should be to think, ‘Is there something that I’m missing that would help me see their perspective and understand their position better?’” Fletcher said, “That’s the way to fight this illusion of information adequacy.”
12. What will “illusion of information adequacy” make us do?
A. Believe we have enough information.
B. Judge if we have enough information.
C. Seek all information to make a decision.
D. Hesitate to decide without full information.
13. In the study, who are more confident in decision-making?
A. Critical information readers. B. Balanced information readers.
C. Overloaded information readers. D. One-sided information readers.
14. Which of the examples can illustrate naïve realism?
A. A teacher encourages multiple viewpoints.
B. A scientist draws a conclusion based on data.
C. A driver insists the other party is fully responsible.
D. A student writes an essay with limited search results.
15. What does Fletcher advise us to do in the text?
A. To rely on your own information. B. To listen to those who agree with you.
C. To think about overlooked viewpoints. D. To assume you have all the relevant facts.

In a peaceful mountain town blanketed by snow, the winter sun pierced through the thick clouds, casting a gentle light on the white expanse below. Tom, a skilled carpenter, had hands that could transform ordinary wood into beautiful furniture and works of art. His workshop was always filled with the scent of wood and every piece of wood seemed to come to life in his hands. Though life was not rich, he always tried his best to provide the best for Emily, his daughter.
Emily, a lovely girl with long blond hair and bright blue eyes, had laughter as bright and warm as a ray of sunshine breaking through a cold winter day. She was endlessly curious about and fond of the winter scenery, especially the sport of skiing. Whenever she saw snowflakes falling outside the window, her heart soared to those hills covered with thick snow, imagining the joy of sliding on the snow.
This year, Emily’s longing for skiing was stronger than ever. Listening to her classmates excitedly talk about the thrill and fun of skiing at school, she couldn’t help but feel a touch of envy. She wished she could experience the thrill of flying on the snow.
Tom noticed Emily’s longing and felt a pang of regret, understanding how much she wanted to go but unable to afford the winter camp fees. One evening at the dinner table, Emily hesitantly brought up the winter camp to Tom. Tom gently stroked Emily’s hair and softly said, “Dear, I know you really want to go, but we might not be able to this year.” A flash of disappointment crossed Emily’s eyes, but she quickly cheered up, not wanting to worry her father.
The next day, while browsing through books about skiing in the school library, Emily suddenly had a brainstorm. She remembered a pile of wooden planks (木板) in her father’s workshop. She had always admired how her father could turn simple wood into something extraordinary. Now, she thought, perhaps she could do the same.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】4. D 5. B 6. A 7. C

I inquired Richard, the founder of an environmental NGO working closely with farmers why this dumping happened and he let out a deep sigh of frustration. “Most of the time it’s just a pure amount here…there is the infrastructure missing, the knowledge missing.”(我原以为解决这么多浪费的办法很简单,但它的复杂性却让我大吃一惊。
根据第三段“The region’s large greenhouses are visible from space, yet the diversity of farms makes it difficult to deal with the waste issue uniformly. Richard and I discussed the challenges faced by farmers, who often lack waste management facilities, especially smaller ones struggling to make ends meet. Biowaste, including plastic clips and twine, ends up in the ocean, visible along Almeria’s beaches. While some farmers are aware of the problem, the costs of tackling it are often prohibitive.(从太空中都能看到该地区庞大的温室,但农场的多样性使得难以统一处理浪费问题。理查德和我讨论了农民面临的挑战,他们往往缺乏废物管理设施,尤其是那些勉强维持生计的小农户。包括塑料夹子和麻绳在内的生物废物最终流入海洋,在阿尔梅里亚的海滩上随处可见。虽然一些农民意识到了这个问题,但解决它的成本往往让他们望而却步)”可知,从本段可知,小农场在经济上与浪费作斗争。故选B项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“One solution proposed is to recycle biowaste as animal feed, reducing the need for imports of soy and corn, primarily from Brazil. However, the distance between crop and livestock areas makes this solution energy-consuming and costly for small-scale farmers. Thankfully, there are some very promising approaches being carried out, such as biochar (生物炭) and regenerative energy production.(有人提出的一个解决方案是将生物废物回收作为动物饲料,减少对主要从巴西进口的大豆和玉米的需求。然而,作物种植区和牲畜饲养区之间的距离使得这一方案对小型农户来说既耗能又昂贵。值得庆幸的是,目前正在实施一些非常有前景的方法,如生物炭和再生能源生产)”可知,高昂的运输成本,让植物废料变成动物饲料这个主意变得不切实际。故选A项。
【7题详解】

A. Getting rid of unwanted outcomes. B. Partnering amateurs with scientists.
C. Using AI to produce desired results. D. Making contributions to universities.
9. What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 3?
A Straightforward. B. Administrative. C. Mature. D. Delicate.
10. Why did researchers develop EyeWire?
A. To initiate the project. B. To select candidates.
C. To enhance interaction. D. To construct platforms.
11 What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Understanding fly behavior: citizen science’s role in public health.
B. Unlocking fly brain secrets: concerted science and amateur power.
C. Decoding fly brain for human emotions: findings from volunteers.
D. Probing into fly brain connections: insects put scientists to the test.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. B

A Believe we have enough information.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. C

推理判断题。根据第一段“If you proudly believe you’re right in a disagreement with a friend or colleague, a new study suggests why you may actually be wrong. Researchers found that people naturally assume they have all the information they need to make a decision or support their position, even when they do not. The researchers called it the “illusion of information adequacy”.(如果你骄傲地认为自己在与朋友或同事的分歧中是对的,一项新的研究揭示了为什么你实际上可能是错的。研究人员发现,人们很自然地认为自己掌握了做出决定或支持自己立场所需的所有信息,即使事实并非如此。研究人员称之为“信息充足的错觉”)”可知,“信息充足的错觉”会让人们很自然地认为自己掌握了做出决定或支持自己立场所需的所有信息。故选A项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“The findings showed that the two groups who read half the story — either just the pro-merging or just the anti-merging arguments — still believed they had enough information to make a good decision. “Those with half the information actually show greater certainty in their decision to merge or remain separate than those who had the complete story,” Fletcher said.(研究结果表明,两组只读了一半故事的人——要么只读了支持合并的观点,要么只读了反对合并的观点——仍然认为他们有足够的信息来做出正确的决定。弗莱彻说:“那些掌握了一半信息的人实际上比那些掌握了全部信息的人在决定合并或保持分离时表现出更大的确定性。”)”可推知,片面的信息阅读者对决策更有信心。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“These discoveries enhance our understanding of naïve realism, where individuals perceive their personal viewpoints as the factual reality, as Fletcher noted. Research on naïve realism often focuses on how people have different understandings of the same situation.(这些发现增进了我们对天真现实主义的理解,即如弗莱彻所指出的,个体将其个人观点视为事实真相。关于天真现实主义的研究通常关注人们如何对同一情境有不同的理解)”可知,天真现实主义指的是个人将他们的个人观点视为事实现实,所以C项“一名司机坚称,对方应负全部责任。”可以说明天真现实主义。故选C项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Your first move when you disagree with someone should be to think, ‘Is there something that I’m missing that would help me see their perspective and understand their position better?” ”Fletcher said, “That’s the way to fight this illusion of information adequacy.”(“当你不同意别人的观点时,你的第一步应该是想,‘我是否遗漏了一些东西,可以帮助我更好地理解他们的观点和立场?’”弗莱彻说,“这就是对抗信息充足错觉的方法。”)”可知,弗莱彻建议思考被忽视的观点。故选C项。

Whether a friend has broken up with their long-term partner, a colleague is losing his job, or a loved one has been diagnosed with a health condition, there are times when people share difficult news with us. We may be unsure about how best to help or feel awkward and uncomfortable. ____16____
Show you care
Ruth, a psychologist at Stony Brook University, recommends trying to find somewhere quiet to have the conversation if possible. ____17____ “Good eye contact and relaxed non-verbal cues, such as leaning forward slightly, nodding and using appropriate facial expressions that convey warmth and empathy can put the person at ease. Acknowledging their feelings through statements helps people feel heard,” Ruth continues.
Ask what they need
Sometimes people need to let off steam and other times they want solutions, so it’s best to ask how you can support them. Check whether they would like advice or just to share their experience. Ruth says, “____18____”
____19____
Accidentally we tend to understate the person’s experience with comments like “____20____” This can invalidate (驳斥) their feelings and experiences. Ruth also recommends trying to avoid offering uninvited advice, or pushing the person into problem-solving before they feel ready. “They may already be overwhelmed and a barrage of possibilities and solutions, without a good understanding of all the factors, can be unhelpful and make the person feel unheard,” she says. “Try to avoid making yourself the focus of the conversation,” adds Ruth.
A. It could have been worse.
B. It is the worst news I’ve heard.
C. Try not to minimize or make it about you.
D. Avoid looking at your phone or other distractions.
E. Listening is more powerful than comforting words.
F. Here, we look at what to do when someone shares their difficult news with you.
G. Asking can offer the person a sense of being heard when they feel overwhelmed.
【答案】16. F 17. D 18. G 19. C 20. A

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】参照高考评分标准。
She rushed home, eager to share the plan with Tom. “Dad,” Emily exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement, “what if we make our own skis? You can turn wood into something amazing, so can you help me?” Tom was initially surprised, but he was fascinated by the idea. He pondered for a moment, and then a smile spread across his face. “That’s a fantastic idea. Let’s do it together,” he said, his voice filled with encouragement. They spent the next few days designing and crafting the skis, with Emily helping to sand and paint them. The process was filled with love, and they both took pride in their creation.
Once everything was ready, they headed for the hill behind their house. Emily’s heart was pounding with a mix of anticipation and nervousness. Tom helped her with the skis, his hands steady and reassuring. With a deep breath, Emily pushed off, the wind rushing past her face as she glided down the slope. The joy of sliding on the snow was even more exciting than she had imagined. Tom watched from the top, pleased with his daughter’s joy and fulfilled dream. The crisp air, glistening snow, and their shared victory left a special memory, proving their creativity and strong connection.
