Remember the safety rules we discussed in last lesson? Can you think of some of them?
In today’s lesson, we’re going to talk about making rules.

Importance of rules
4
Why do we have rules?
keep students in order
help students stay safe
create a better learning environment
help people get out of danger faster and be safe
must
mustn’t
obligations
prohibition
We learned how to write rules in Grade Six. We wrote class rules and Fire drill rules.
However, have you ever thought about this question, “Why do we have rules?”
This question sounds simple, but when you think about it, it’s not easy to answer.
Let’s take class rules as an example.
What if we don’t have class rules?
S1: class rules keep the students in order and school rules help school run smoothly. Without rules certain students will take advantage and spoil the learning of others, and that is unfair.
Very good. Class rules help keep students in order, so that everyone could have a good learning environment in class.
S2: I think class rules can keep us safe. If we don’t have rules, some students might bring something dangerous to school. I don’t feel safe without rules.
You are right. rules keep us safe.
S3: Class rules are necessary. If everyone follows the rules. All of us can learn better.
I agree.
I think most of you understand the value of class rules.
As for fire drill rules, things are almost the same. If everyone follows the rules, they can get out of danger faster and be safe.
When we made those rules in Grade Six, which modal verb did we use?
Yes, we used modal verb must in positive and negative forms.
Remember? Must can express obligation and rules, while mustn’t shows prohibition.

Family rules

Check the door and electrical appliances before going to bed.
Wear seatbelts in the car.
Never stay up late.
Brush teeth at least twice a day.
Take turns setting the table each night.
Knock before entering each other’s rooms.
Wait until others finish talking before we talk.

Manners
Imperatives
short and simple language for everyone
It’s important to involve all members of the family as much as possible when you’re making family rules.
Fairness
DOs DON’Ts
Besides must and mustn’t we’ve learned some other expressions for rules.
For example, in your family, What family rules do you have?
S1 : my parents and I made family rules together.
We have safety rules like “check the door and electrical appliances before going to bed.”, “ “Wear seatbelts in the car”;
We have rules for our daily routines, for example, “never stay up late.” , “brush teeth at least twice a day”, and “take turns setting the table each night.”
We also have rules for manners. Like “knock before going into each other’s rooms”, “wait until others finish talking before we talk”
Here are the rules Kevin mentioned. How many kinds of rule does Kevin have in his family?
Do you remember? Yes. There are three kinds of rules. They are rules for safety, daily routines, and manners.
Look at the language they use in the sentences? Anything in common? All the sentences are imperatives. Why use imperatives when making rules?
Because it is easy for children to understand.
Do you think kids can make rules?
Actually, It’s important to involve all members of the family as much as possible when you’re making family rules.
Children as young as three can be part of talking about the rules. As you get older, you can be more involved in deciding what the rules should be.
Making the rules helps you understand and accept the rules. This means you’re more likely to see the rules as fair and stick to them.

What are the staff doing in the office?
staff /stɑːf/ n.
behave /bɪˈheɪv/ v.
customer /ˈkʌstəmə(r)/ n.
polite /pəˈlaɪt/ adj.
we need rules in class, for emergencies, and in family.
We also need rules in workplace.
Here is a picture of an office.
You see Mr. Pang (为什么没有用Benny’s father) in the left corner of the picture? He is the boss/manager? of a company.
And the other people in the picture are (翻) his staff in the Mr. Pang’s company. Staff means all the people who work for the company. Read after me, staff, staff. Notice this word only has singular form. For example, teaching staff 全体教职工。 Mr. Pang/Benny’s father is worried when he finds his staff doing the things you can see in the picture.
Do you know what is everyone doing in the office?
S1: Jill and May are chatting. Tom is sleeping. Ben is reading a comic strip. Simon is changing the light bulb and Terry is leaning out of the window. (建议这里用climbing the window. Lean是生词吗?) Perhaps, he is talking with someone outside. Lilly, Angela, Peter are working.
Thank you. But I guess Terry is not climbing the window. He is just leaning out of the window. He is bending his body and looking out of the window. Do you agree with S1? She is right. many people are not behaving in a right way in the office. (翻) behave is the verb of behaviour. Read after me, behave, behave.
Do you notice the telephone is ringing on Lilly’s table? Who is calling?
Probably a customer, right? (翻) customer means 客户. Lilly might be a secretary in the office. Why doesn’t she answer the phone?
What do you think of the staff members in the office?

Simon and Terry.
2. Does anyone wear improperly in the office?
Yes. It’s Peter.
3. Who is not responsible for his/her job?

It seems Angela is the only one who is working in the office.
But do you notice the files that are piled up around her? It is not safe to do so. If the files fall down, they may hurt others or Angela herself. She is not responsible for her own and others’ safety.
