Did we ever find out what makes electricity “a dangerous servant”? Does the story tell us why it is dangerous? Does dad give a good explanation of how and why electricity is dangerous? I hope you can think about some possible reasons that electricity is dangerous. Take out your worksheet and let’s focus on the first task. If you think the reason is true, tick yes. If you think it isn’t, tick no. remember you can add more reasons in the table if you think of more possible answers. All of them are true. If we use electricity carelessly, it could be very dangerous. Don’t take it for granted. Electricity can be very powerful. Probably , that is the reason why the story is named “a dangerous servant” 3 Do you know…? 4 Elements of a story Characters Setting Plot Theme Point of view where and when who appear what happens why write told by first person/third person Back to the story “a dangerous servant”, What do you think of the story? Does it attract you from the very beginning? To learn the story, I will introduce you story elements first. In cooking, we need good ingredients to cook good food. A good story requires 5 key ingredients. They are setting, characters, plot, theme and point of view. Setting tells the reader where and when the story takes place. Water talk In a story characters are imaginary people who appear to be real to the readers. The writer gives information about the characters in the story to make them come alive and make the story more interesting. Water talk plot is a series of events through which the writer reveals what is happening in the story. Theme is the message the writer intends to communicate with readers by telling the story, sometimes it is a moral. For example, Beauty and beast, the theme is don’t judge a book by its cover. A theme of Toy Story is that Friendship can conquer all things. Point of view, it could be a first person story whether it’s written from the perspective of I. or it could be from the perspective of a third person. He or she. It is easy to tell the point of view of a story. But it is not easy to figure out why a writer would use one or another. These five elements make up a short story. However we are going to focus on three of the elements today. They are setting characters and plot. 4 5 Read and find out What is the setting of the story? When Where One evening. In the living room of Benny’s home. In the story of “A dangerous servant” What is the setting? Where can we find it? From the very beginning, we can find that the story happens on one evening. From the pictures, we can tell that it happens in the living room of Benny and Daisy’s home. So usually, we can find the setting of a story at the beginning. 5 6 Read and find out What are the characters in the story? Main character Other characters Benny Daisy, Dad and Mum Next, what are the characters? In a story characters are imaginary people who appear to be real to the readers. We can easily find that the main character is Benny and the supporting characters are Daisy, Mum and Dad. To make the characters come alive, how does the writer describe the characters in the story? Have you noticed there are lots of dialogues in the story, from the very beginning to the end. Let’s see what do these dialogue tell us about the characters. The writer gives information about the characters in the story to make them come alive, which makes the story more interesting. The writer make the characters come alive either through how they are speaking, what they are doing, or what they look like. That sort of thing. 6 7 Read and find out How does Benny start the trick? Daisy accepts Benny’s request without question. What is a packet of electricity? Take a look at the beginning part. How does Benny start the trick? By asking “Can you get me a packet of electricity, please?” when you are reading this, do you know what a packet of electricity is? I suppose you are not pretty sure about it. Readers might think “what is a packet of electricity?” Daisy said, “OK” and went out. Are you surprised at Daisy’s answer? She just accepts Benny’s request without question. 7 8 Read and find out What can we learn about Benny and Daisy? at last: finally Benny is confident of his trick this time. They often play jokes on each other. Benny has never tricked Daisy successfully. Will Daisy be tricked this time? When Daisy goes out for shopping, Benny laughs and says to his parents, “Haha, I’ve tricked Daisy at last.” because he thinks it’s impossible to buy electricity in packets. He is very confident of his trick this time. In the sentence, “at last” means finally. Well, from what Benny says we can infer he and Daisy often play jokes on each other. And Benny never tricks Daisy successfully before. By writing these dialogues, the writer create a suspense at the beginning of the story. Readers want to know if Daisy will be tricked this time. 8 9 grin /ɡrɪn/n. a wide smile Daisy has already known Benny’s trick. She knows the way to get “packets of electricity” in a store. Benny is surprised and speechless, because he realizes that he is the one who is looking foolish in the end. Is Benny the one who laughs last? Read and find out When Daisy comes back home, Benny is still confident that his trick will work. Daisy will look foolish in front of him and their parents. Because there is a grin on his face when he asks “May I have my packet of electricity, please?” Grin means a wide smile. To Benny’s surprise, Daisy simply replies “Yes, you may. Here it is.” She hands batteries to Benny. Well, the suspense Benny and our readers hold has an answer now. Actually, Daisy knows that Benny is trying to be funny and make her look like a fool. She knows that she'll be able to get "packets" of electricity (batteries) at the store. When dad explains why batteries are packets of electricity, Daisy says” Didn’t you know that, Benny?” Can you imagine how benny feels at that time? What Benny says is just “But…But..” He is obviously surprised and speechless, because he realizes that he is the one who is looking foolish in the end. 9 10 1. Do they know about Benny’s plan at the beginning? 2. Why do they talk with Benny about electricity? Read and find out I learn some facts about electricity at the same time as Benny does. Yes, they do. To turn the situation into a learning experience. Now, let’s talk about Benny’s parents. They are also interesting characters in the story. Do they know about Benny’s plan at the beginning? Why do they talk with Benny about electricity? Read the story again and answer the two questions. Why don’t they scold Benny for wanting to make his sister look foolish? What do they do instead? Benny’s parents don’t say something like “Benny, How could you trick your sister?” They are curious to know how Daisy will handle the situation––perhaps she has something up her sleeve. And she did! The situation taught Benny a lesson that they couldn't have. Instead, they turned it into a learning experience and explained to Benny about electricity (what it is and where it comes from). Mum and dad discuss electricity with Benny while Daisy is shopping. As for our readers, we learn about electricity at the same time Benny does from his parents. 10 11 To explain facts to both the characters and readers. Dialogues Think in mind To make characters seem real. To keep readers thinking of what is going to happen next. Let’s conclude the purposes of dialogues. the writer uses dialogues to … 11 12 Situation The way the story begins Conflict begins The problem or complication Rising action Events that lead to the climax Climax The turning point in the story Falling action Events after climax Conclusion How the story ends Read and find out Plot diagram An evening at Daisy and Benny’s home, Daisy’s going out for a packet of sweets and asks if anybody wants anything. Story line Plot has some elements on its own. As we discussed the plot is a series of events through which the writer reveals what is happening. It tells the things happen in the story. Plot can be diagrammed on a plot diagram. You may have done this last term with the story of Gork, a monster on another planet. In the diagram, the exposition is the part that sets up the story. The rising action is a series of events including the conflict as the story builds. The climax is the turning point in the story. It’s the part of the most excitement. After the climax, everything changes in the story. The falling action tells us what happens after the climax . The conclusion or sometimes we call it resolution is how all the conflicts have been resolved. It is the way the story ends. So in particular, exposition set the stage of the story. It often contains setting and characters. It is usually in the first couple of lines. Can you find the exposition part of the story “a dangerous servant”? 12 13 Situation Conclusion Conflict Task 2: Plot diagram An evening at Daisy and Benny’s home, Daisy is going out for a packet of sweets and asks if anybody wants anything. Benny asks for a packet of electricity. Daisy returns. Benny asks for his packet of electricity. Daisy gives Benny a pack of batteries. Dad explains that batteries ARE “packets” of electricity. Benny thought he was going to make his sister look foolish, but instead he’s the one who was fooled! Mum and Dad have a conversation with Benny about what electricity is and where it comes from. Read and find out ➲ Task 2 (Worksheet) Now take out your worksheet. Let’s read the story again and complete the plot diagram in your own words. The exposition part has been done for you. You will have 3 minutes to finish this task. Conflict usually creates a suspense. It is really a problem that needs to be solved. The conflict in this story is Benny asks for a packet of electricity. Climax is when the action comes to its highest point. Everything is built to this one big point. What do you think is the climax in the story? That’s right. Daisy gives benny a packet of batteries. That is the turning point of the story. It is the climax. Between the conflict and the climax, Benny and his parents talk about electricity. While they are talking, Daisy returns. Then Benny asks for his packet of electricity. Falling action happens right after the climax. Remember some stories have very little falling action. It is usually a very small part of the story. In this story, Dad explains why batteries are packets of electricity. Then comes to the conclusion. Benny thought he was going to make his sister look foolish, but instead he is the one who was fooled. 13 Practice 14 Task 2: Retell the story . . It is time to practice Use the plot diagram to retell the story in your own words. You have th 14 Practice 15 Checklist Do I mention the setting of the story?
