(24-25高三上·江苏常州·期末)Years ago, I faced a significant challenge with my water bills. As a single man living in my own house, I was astonished by the 1 amounts I had to pay. A wise old neighbor suggested that I dig a 2 . Following his advice, I hired an engineer who marked several 3 on my property where he believed we could find water. However, after digging multiple holes without success, I became quite 4 and almost gave up on the idea.
But then, a saying 5 to my mind: “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.” This 6 me to push through, so I encouraged the engineer to keep digging. After 7 more than 1000 feet into the earth, we finally made it.

And when you finally reach them, celebrate your success and let everyone 13 your worth. Keep pushing forward, and you’ll find the water you’re 14 . Remember, every drop counts, and every 15 you make is a step towards your ultimate goal.

Days ago, my 91-year-old grandfather called me to test his new hearing aid. For the first time in years, he could hear my voice clearly again. It 1 us both.
I soon found out there was another reason 2 my grandfather being so happy— the new hearing aid service provider, Anna. As a senior, my grandfather became anxious easily whenever his device broke down. However, Anna gave time and attention and visited 3 to ensure that the new hearing aid 4 properly. She went beyond the call of 5 and refused to accept any reward but words as thanks.
Living in a world flooded with negative news, such kindness might sound 6 nowadays, and I wondered whether it’s more common than we think. Then I came across a study suggesting people often underestimate the 7 of strangers to engage with, or even befriend them. It explains that news coverage of current affairs tends to 8 more on the negative because humans give negative events more attention and become more 9 of the world and less hopeful than we need to be.
From my grandfather’s experience, I find sometimes what we hear, see or even know might not be the 10 picture. The truth might be hidden from us, requiring us to notice and 11 it. We could start by asking ourselves whether we’re laying too much 12 on negative news and letting them 13 us. We’re supposed to shift our attention and engage ourselves in sharing good news. So, why not 14 ourselves, for all of the bad in news, behind the scenes, in people’s ordinary lives, lie untold stories of extraordinary 15 ?

(24-25高二上·广东江门·期中)Before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy could ask for: a cell phone. I 1 that phone all summer. To me, being connected was more important than being present. So, you can imagine my 2 when I learnt what my dad had planned for my family vacation that year. “This year,” my dad said, “we are going camping!” His excitement was met with a 3 sigh. However, he wasn’t upset.
The views during the trip were amazing, but none of those mattered to me. My mind was on my phone. I remembered the first time I looked up was for something 4 my phone had no service. My dad said that it would be 5 until we returned home. I would be 6 in the forest for four days with no way to contact the outside world. I went to bed angrily that night. But something 7 when I awoke in the morning. Instead of 8 burying my head in my phone, I focused on something else: my surroundings. As my dad and I walked the trails (小路), I felt the 9 of tons of stress off my shoulders.
I realized being 10 to nature made me focus more on myself. I let my mind speak to me and listened to my feelings. I had been so focused on staying connected that I hadn’t been hearing my own 11 . That was 15 years ago, and I carry that 12 to this day. When I received my first work email, I 13 the reason why my dad chose a campsite with no access to technology. In a world that asks for more connectivity, the need to check up your cell phone becomes stronger. Having my own time is nearly 14 when I can be connected at any time of day or night. So, I need to work harder.
Whenever I feel my inner self is slipping away, I follow my dad’s 15 . I pack up the tent and drive until my phone shows those two magic words: “no service”.

(24-25高二上·湖南·期末)I find even small things can have an impact on our awareness.
My wife, daughter, and I moved into our home nine years ago and we spent a lot of 1 in the yard to get it looking like it does today. We did the best and called this area our ‘rock garden’.
Last summer I found a tiny little plant that I could not immediately 2 . I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise 3 that she didn’t, either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could 4 what it was.
Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the 5 plant, it appeared to be a Sunflower. I decided to baby it along. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something 6 . The Sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk (茎) begin. It 7 had begun under a big rock.
That’s when I realized that if a tiny little Sunflower didn’t let a big rock get 8 its way of developing, we too have the 9 of doing the same thing. Once our environment begins to see that we believe in ourselves like that little Sunflower, we can 10 the same nutrition and grow as well. We need to believe in ourselves, 11 we are able to achieve our desires. Like the Sunflower, it knew it could 12 its difficulty because it trusted the Universal Truth and had 13 it would succeed.

(24-25高二上·黑龙江哈尔滨·期末)I’m pretty good at sticking with things even when they get hard. Bad relationships, unpleasant workplaces, 1 sports — I’ve hung on in there for months and even years longer than I should have, convinced the situation would 2 if I refused to give up.
After all, isn’t every success story covering 3 ? Didn’t Ernest Hemingway shrink from writing during the First World War, and didn’t Oprah get fired from her first TV job? Quitting is a sign that you lack 4 and strong will, or at least I was raised to believe.
5 , if I look back on all the things I eventually quit, my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. I’ve wasted too much time and energy, expecting that I could 6 everyone if I just kept going.
People are more likely to 7 something if they’ve invested a lot of money or effort into it, even when it’s clear that they should 8 their losses and jump ship. This practice is normal and understandable but it’s also 9 .
