English is the world’s international language. But in your book, non-verbal (不用语言的) communication is paid more attention to. ▲ June: Well, gestures (手势) and other body language can have different meanings in different places. Something that you think is friendly or polite could be considered to be very impolite in another culture. I’ve described many of these customs and cultural differences, so my readers won’t have a bad start when they meet people from places where the culture is different from their own. Can greeting someone the wrong way really lead to misunderstanding (误解)? June: In some places, yes. The heavy handshake that a North American expects may seem quite impolite in other places. And a light handshake―which is usual in some countries—may seem unfriendly to a North American. What other gestures can cause misunderstanding? June: Take the gesture for “come here” for example. In North America, people gesture with the palm (掌心) up. Well, in southern Europe, that gesture means “goodbye”. And in many Asian countries, the palm-up gesture is thought rude. Instead, people there gesture with the palm down. Surely, there must be some gestures used everywhere, right? What about the thumb-up (翘拇指) gesture for “great”? June: Sorry. That’s very rude in Australia and the Middle East. That is why it important to know about body language and cultural differences. 4.Which gesture should you use if you want to say “goodbye”.in southern Europe?___ __ A. B. C. D. 5.According to the passage, _ ____ is/are NOT mentioned in June’s book. A.the importance of body language. B.Could it make readers interested? C.Can you give us some examples? D.why is that so important? 7.What can we infer (推断) from the passage?___ __ A.June paid more attention to the language of English in her book. B.A girl from Australia may be angry with you if you praise her by using the thumb-up gesture. C.Body language is the world’s international language. D.In many Asian countries, the palm-up gesture is thought rude. 3. 完成句子 1.这些旧照片让我想起了以前的日子。 These old photos _____ me ___ the old days. 2.史蒂芬霍金不仅是一名伟大的科学家,而且是一位著名的作家。 Stephen Hawking was not only a great scientist __ ___ a famous writer. 3.出发前,记得给我打个电话,以便我知道什么时间来接你。 Remember to give me a call before you set off so that I can know when to___ you__ 4.萨姆叔叔总是愿意帮助别人,大家都很喜欢他。 Uncle Sam is always___ ____ help others. Jokingly, I said to the group, “What do you think if we go a week without using our laptops or smartphones?” They laughed, and one of them said, “No way, Mr. White. They would be too much.” I could feel their worry, and told them that I was only considering single screen-free days. Even that idea left them feeling upset. According to a survey we did, most students in our school spend about six hours a day on screens. Many of my students start their day by checking their smartphones. I often see them looking at their phones when getting off the bus or at parents’ drop-off, they can’t use their own “screens” at school. They usually work on computers at school for at least two hours during the day. It’s clear that our students spend a lot of time on screens. We do see the benefits of technology. However, we teachers also want to make sure that students have balanced learning and social experiences away from their screens. That’s why we have come up with the idea of screen-free days. During the course of the year, we have built in several screen-free days that require us to make different plans for our students about how they will communicate with one another and the world around them without “screens”. For some teachers, this means bringing back a valuable lesson plan that has been put off for some time because it is “out of date”. Others have designed something completely new. Fun activities, for example, card games and room escape(密室逃脱) games, are organized at school. In these activities, students socialize without smartphones and have face-to-face communication without checking on “likes” they’ve got online. These fun activities also make it possible for the whole grade to enjoy the company of their friends with no smartphones. After our first screen-free day, students mentioned that they were surprised they enjoyed it. Finding ways to help our students connect with one another is important. While technology is already part of our world, it shouldn’t play such an important role in a learner’s life. 1. Why have the teachers come up with the idea of screen-free days? _______________________________________________________ 2. How many hours do most students in the school spend on screens every day? _______________________________________________________ 3. I spent a lot of time practicing my favorite song. When it was my turn to perform on the stage, I was a bit nervous at first. But as the music started, I gradually calmed down and lost myself in the song. After the competition, I felt a great sense of achievement. This activity not only provided a platform for us to show our talents but also strengthened the bond among classmates. It made me more confident and taught me the value of teamwork and hard work. I will always cherish the precious memories of this art festival. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
