Passage 2
(23-24高一下·河南安阳·阶段练习)No matter where you go around the world, everybody loves to celebrate. And when it comes to celebration, festivals offer something for everyone. Here’s a look at our list picks for the biggest and best festivals in the world.
LA TOMATINA (VALENCIA, SPAIN)
Started in 1945, La Tomatina is one of the oldest festivals on our list. It’s also easily the messiest, coming off like the world’s biggest food fight. If you go, please follow some simple rules: Don’t throw hard objects; squash (压扁) the tomato before throwing it; stay a safe distance away from tomato trucks. In other words, have fun, but don’t hurt anybody.
DIA DE LOS MUERTOS (MEXICO)
Although Cinco de Mayo may be more well-known in the US, this is arguably Mexico’s most important and widely celebrated holiday. More commonly known in English-speaking countries as the Day of the Dead, the festivities begin on October 31 and last through November 2. The holiday is all about getting together with friends and family to remember and celebrate ancestors (祖先) who have died in order to help them on their spiritual journey.
KING’S DAY (NETHERLANDS)
Queen’s Day was a national holiday (celebrated on April 30 until 2013) commemorating (纪念) Queen Beatrix’s birth. By having the festivities in pleasant April, the proud Dutch could dress up in bright orange and have a few drinks without worrying about the weather. With the crowning (加冕) of her son, the holiday became known as King’s Day. It is now officially celebrated on April 27 (the King’s birthday).
WOMAD (WILTSHIRE, ENGLAND)
One of my favourite music festivals I’ve attended, WOMAD (World Of Music, Arts & Dance) was founded in 1980. More than any other music festival, WOMAD has always been a celebration of global culture first and foremost. They offer workshops for both children and adults. Passage 3
(23-24高一下·湖北黄冈·期中)Halloween is a festival celebrated on October 31st. The name of the holiday means “hallowed” or “holy evening” because it happens the day before All Saints Day. It is said that Halloween is the children’s New Year’s Eve. They dress up with special costumes (服装), they eat too much, and they stay up too late celebrating.
Children go around the neighborhood wearing make-up, and dress in masks and colorful costumes. The most common costumes are witches (巫师), ghosts, skeletons (骷髅), and popular TV, movie and storybook characters. Some costumes are homemade; others are bought in stores. The children go from door to door saying “trick or treat”. People give them candy, cookies, fruit or money. Sometimes money is collected to help UNICEF, United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund.
Homes, stores, and classrooms are decorated in the traditional Halloween colors, orange and black. Usual decorations are witches, ghosts, skeletons, and Jack-o’-lanterns, Jack-o’-lanterns are pumpkins that are carved (雕刻) to look like faces. They are placed on doorway entrances and in windows. Horror movies and ghost stories are shown on TV on this day.
Adults and older children also celebrate Halloween with parades, festivals, and costume parties. Some people create their costumes; other people rent them. Contests are held, where the best costume receives a prize. One of the party events popular with children is dunking (浸泡) for apples. Apples are put in tubs filled with water. People try to get the apples using only their mouths; hands cannot be used.
1. Why is it said that Halloween is the children’s New Year’s Eve?
A.Because Halloween comes the day before All Saints Day.

2. Which of the following statements is NOT true about the common costumes according to the text?
A.They are colorful.
B.All of the costumes are bought in stores.
C.Some of the costumes are homemade.
D.They are witches, ghosts, skeletons, popular TV characters and so on.
3. What are the traditional Halloween colors?
A.Orange and brown. B.Red and green.
C.Black and white. D.Orange and black.
Passage 4
(23-24高一下·山东临沂·期中)There are festivals going on somewhere in the world every day of the year. These range from very large events to local celebrations in tiny villages. We have selected a few of the more unusual, colourful festivals from around the world.
Mighty Mud (泥; 泥浆) Mania: Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
Children’s dreams really do come true in the City of Scottsdale. Children aged 1 to 13, get to join in the mud race Mighty Mudway features water and mud games. There are also water slides, sandcastle buildings and fun for all ages. Moms and dads, remember to send your kids out with old clothes and shoes.
Songkran Festival, Thailand
What better way to celebrate the “start of the return of rains” than with a country-wide water fight? Thais celebrate their festival officially from April 13th until April 15th. These three days represent the last day of the old year, the day of transition, and the first day of the New Year. Water battles fought out for days in the streets of every town and city over the country.
The La Tomatina Festival, Spain
On the last Wednesday of every August thousands of Spaniards take part in the La Tomatina Festival in Bunol. Truckloads of tomatoes are pulled in each year and dumped in the city centre. The people throw tomatoes at each other for the whole day, but the only rule is that the tomato must be flattened in the hand first, before being thrown. Even elderly grandmothers have been known to take part.
Canberra Sled Dog Classic: Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

Passage 5
(23-24高一下·福建福州·阶段练习)Editor’s note: An increasing number of Chinese people, especially the young, are more willing to celebrate Western festivals. Should we celebrate foreign festivals? Forum (论坛) readers share their opinions. You’re welcome to add yours.
Dinah (China)
I enjoy the happy atmosphere of both Chinese and Western festivals. As long as it is meaningful for me, I will celebrate it with my boyfriend, and my parents! I like Western festivals and often celebrate them without even knowing the origins of them. Why? Because what I really appreciate is just the happy atmosphere.
SharkMinnow (Canada)
Western Festivals are more like parties or games for some Chinese. Also, spending money = good for economy. Most Chinese don’t take Western festivals as seriously as their own. It’s like a game or party in my eyes. A way to blow off steam and have fun (and spend money).
Travis (UK)
As an Englishman teaching here in China for two years, my friends have got used to, and enjoy when I celebrate my festivals. My school also likes it as well, although this year they asked me not to scare the teachers so much on Halloween. My Chinese friends enjoy taking part in my festivals, as they also learn more about my culture, and the history that goes with it…
Leesinchina (US)
Cherish your own festivals. It would be a pity if the Chinese accepted these Western days — first, because they have absolutely nothing to do with traditional Chinese culture. Second, they are a big trick by the big stores to get more money out of you. Stick to your own festivals — they actually mean something to you — rather than following western customs for no good reason.
1. What matters most according to Dinah?
A.The atmosphere when celebrating festivals.
B.The people with whom to celebrate festivals.
C.Celebrating Chinese festivals with her family.
D.Celebrating Western festivals in a good atmosphere.
2. What’s the attitude of readers 2 and 4 towards celebrating Western festivals?
A.Optimistic. B.Indifferent. C.Neutral. D.Negative.
3. In which of the following can this text be originally found?
A.A newspaper. B.A debate. C.A website. D.A text book.

Passage 6
(23-24高一下·陕西咸阳·阶段练习)What are pillows really stuffed with? Not physically, but symbolically? The question occurred to me with the photos of the international pillow fight in the news and social media from the 50 cities around the world. Armed with nothing more than bring-our-own pillows, strangers struck heavily each other from Amsterdam to Atlanta, Warsaw to Washington DC. But why? Is there anything more to this delightful celebration?
Actually, since at least the 16th century, the soft pillow has been given symbolic meanings. The Chinese playwright, Tang Xianzu, told a famous story in his work, Handan Notes. It was about a wise man who met a depressed young scholar at an inn and offered him a magic pillow. The scholar had a sweet afternoon nap on this pillow, dreaming that he had a more fulfilling life. When the young man awakened to discover that all was just a dream. The magic pillow’s power shifts from wonder to terror. What’s more, the 19th-century English novelist, Charlotte Bronte, poetically observed “a ruffled mind makes a restless pillow”. Perhaps Bronte learned this from the philosopher, Montaigne, who once insisted that “lack of thoughts in mind is the softest pillow on which a man can have a good rest”. On Montaigne’s thinking, intelligence and happiness compete against each other forever in a pillow fight that only one can win.
With the above information, we can perhaps more easily measure the attraction of the global pillow fight. Just like a ceremony of release, the annual international pillow fight amounts to a kind of cleansing, a brushing off of daily worries: an emptying of the world’s restless mind.
1. How did the writer lead into the topic of the passage?
A.By giving reasons. B.By telling stories.
C.By using sayings. D.By raising questions.
2. Why the work and words of the three writers were listed in the second paragraph?
A.To state how pillows help people take a good rest.
B.To explain why pillows connect with people’s minds.
C.To claim that pillows can symbolically convey the meaning.
D.To describe that pillows always symbolize the good dreams.
3. What do the underlined words “a ruffled mind” probably mean in the passage?
A.A mind without any thoughts. B.A mind with messy thoughts.
C.A mind that is peaceful. D.A mind that is simple.
4. What can be inferred about the international pillow fight from the last paragraph?
A.It mainly celebrates daily worries.
B.It contains a profound meaning of history.
C.People will feel relieved during the fight.
D.People will lose their inner peace during the fight.
Passage 7
(23-24高一下·江西宜春·阶段练习)Diwali (Deepavali) is a festival of lights observed in October or November each year in Canada. During the festival, various community groups, businesses, schools and associations celebrate it in different ways. Some companies have Diwali dinners and some communities organise gatherings that feature firework displays, dances, street lighting, and plays.
Many women wear fine jewellery and silk outfits to celebrate Diwali. Some women and girls use Mehendi, a dye decoration which can last a limited time, on their palms, and then they will finally get colourful hand paintings. Many homes that celebrate Diwali have various types of sweets, salty and spiced food as well as Diwali herbs (香草). Various lights, candles and sparklers are lit inside and outside homes, particularly in courtyards, on Diwali. Diwali is not a nationwide public holiday in Canada, but it is a prevalent festival celebrated in many towns and cities. There may be traffic jams and parking places may be full in areas where events are held to celebrate Diwali. Some businesses may close early on Diwali.
Diwali is called the “Festival of Lights” and is celebrated to honour Rama, a hero who once fought and won a battle against the demons (恶魔). In the past, people lit their houses to celebrate his victory over demons (light over darkness). At the same time, every household did careful and complete cleaning at home in advance. It is believed that the goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi, travels around the Earth on this day and enters the house that is pure, clean, and bright.
Diwali celebrations may vary in different communities but its spiritual meaning is generally “the awareness of the inner light”. As the word “Deepavali” means “a row or cluster of light”, the festival symbolises the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness.
1. What can we learn about Diwali from the first two paragraphs?
A.It is celebrated on a fixed day.
B.It centres on various local foods.
C.People stay up late to prepare for it.
D.People from all walks of life enjoy celebrating it.
2. What does the underlined word “prevalent” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Popular. B.Free. C.Serious. D.Funny.
3. According to Paragraph 3, why did people make their houses bright and clean on Diwali?
A.To pray for a good journey. B.To expect joy and good luck.
C.To create a romantic atmosphere. D.To welcome their friends to visit.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To stress the importance of a public holiday.
B.To tell an interesting story about a Canadian festival.
C.To briefly introduce a traditional festival in Canada.
D.To show different holiday celebrations in Western cultures.
Passage 8
(23-24高一下·浙江·期中)Australia Day, on 26 January, is in memory of the day in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip, commander of the First Fleet of 11 British ships, arrived at Sydney Cove to mark the birth of the colony (殖民). Every year, many in this nation of 24 million people gather on beaches and around barbeques to celebrate. From boats competitions, camel races, to outdoor concerts, Australians mark a public holiday more popularly treated as a late summer festival than the serious national day its founders intended it to be — a unifying celebration of the good fortune of being Australian and the values that unite the nation: freedom, independence, a fair go, mateship.
However, not all Australians feel the same about the day. Recently there has been much controversy over the correctness of celebrating on this date. Native Australians, in particular, have long referred to this date as "Invasion (入侵) Day" or "National Day of Mourning (哀悼)" in protest of the arrival of the British peoples. They mourn their ancestors who suffered and died during colonization. There has even been a growing push to change the date of the national celebration, a move popular with younger Australians but less so with older generations.
In response to the protests, the Australian government has recognized the traditional owners of the lands on which Australia Day activities take place, in the hope that Australians from all backgrounds come together to celebrate Australia as a multicultural society. "Our desire is that Australia Day is a time for inclusion, as well as an opportunity for greater understanding," one officer from The Australian Department of Communications and the Arts said.
1. What is the original purpose of Australia Day?
A.To observe a late summer festival.
B.To honor the arrival of the British.
C.To celebrate national identity and values.
D.To mourn the natives who suffered during colonization.
2. What does the underlined word “controversy” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Debate. B.Defence. C.Faith. D.Puzzle.
3. What did the British probably do to the native Australians after their arrival?
A.They mourned the suffering of native Australians.
B.They recognized native Australians’ independence.
C.They protested against native Australians’ ownership of the land.
D.They brought loss of life and hardship among native Australians.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.More Australia Day activities will be organized.
B.The date of Australia Day will soon be changed.
C.The protests of changing the date have already been settled.
D.Australia Day should be celebrated with understanding and respect.
Passage 9
(23-24高一下·海南·期中)With the increasing development of technology, we now have the ability to get much information from foreign media sources (媒体资源). Because we can learn much about events happening in other countries from the media, such as magazines and newspapers, many people may think that reading magazines and newspapers is the best way to learn about a foreign country. However, I believe that only reading magazines and newspapers as a way of learning about a foreign country has several limitations.
We cannot deny that magazines and newspapers actually present some valuable information about foreign countries. However, the information that they present is often one-sided, so that readers can only learn about one opinion on an event happening in a foreign country. Also, the words and pictures in magazines and newspapers may not be true. If a government wants to hide some facts, it may force the media to tell lies to its readers, and thus the information that readers receive may not be true.
I think that the best way to learn about a foreign country is to travel or live there for a while. By traveling or living in a country, you can see things that do not appear in magazines and newspapers, and learn about the local political situation, state of the economy, and the culture. You can get more information about a country by talking directly with local people about the overall situation, and can truly understand the local culture by living with them for a while. But if you are at home reading a newspaper or magazine, you simply get information provided by others passively (被动地) instead of collecting information directly.
So, I believe that the best way to learn about a foreign country is not by reading magazines and newspapers but by placing yourself in that foreign country.
1. What does the text mainly discuss?
A.How people get information in no time.
B.Where people can get information they need.
C.Why it’s important to learn about a foreign country.
D.What the best way to learn about a foreign country is.
2. What does the underlined word “deny” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Disagree. B.Promise. C.Realize. D.Accept.
3. Which can best describe the information from magazines and newspapers?
A.True but not enough. B.Correct but not fresh.
C.Limited and not always true. D.Not enough and not valuable.
4. What is the advantage of traveling to a foreign country according to Paragraph 3?
A.You’ll have a quicker mind by learning more.
B.You’ll have a chance to read local newspapers.
C.You’ll meet people who are different from you.
D.You’ll learn truths that the media don’t provide.
Passage 10
Patrick’s Day, Ireland’s National Day, is celebrated on 17th March every year, marking the anniversary of the day on which he passed away. St. Patrick is the most famous saint of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain, he was enslaved in Ireland at the age of 16, but he successfully escaped. Later, he returned to Ireland and brought his religious beliefs to its people.
On St Patrick’s Day, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. People would dance, drink, and feast on traditional meals of Irish bacon and cabbage. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years.
Interestingly, however, the first parade held to celebrate St Patrick’s Day took place not in Ireland but in the United States. On 17th March 1762, Irish soldiers serving in the English army marched through New York City. Along with their music, the parade helped the soldiers reconnect with their Irish roots, as well as with fellow Irishmen serving in the English army.
Over 100 St. Patrick’s Day parades happen across the U.S., with New York City and Boston hosting the biggest. In 1848, New York Irish Aid societies joined to create the official New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the world’s oldest civilian (平民的) parade and the largest in the U.S. It draws over 150,000 participants and nearly 3 million spectators (观众), lasting over five hours. Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Savannah also celebrate the day with major parades.
Today, people of all backgrounds celebrate St Patrick’s Day, especially throughout the United States, Canada and Australia. It is also celebrated in many other locations far from Ireland, including Japan, Singapore, and Russia.

B.It has the largest parade in Ireland.
C.It was first celebrated in the United States.
D.It has now become an international festival.

Passage 11
(23-24高一下·重庆·阶段练习)Teenagers across the world eagerly await the day they become legal adults, to be free from the dependence of their parents and to practice the full rights of their citizenship. The situation is no different in South Korea. Here, the legal age of adulthood is 19. Ten years ago, the legal age was 20, but this was lowered by a year in 2013 based on recognition of the early maturity of modern teenagers. Now, from their 19th birthday onwards, South Korean teenagers can vote, get married and work full-time.
Unlike most other countries, the South Korean government celebrates this transformation into adulthood with an official “Coming-of-Age Day”, which falls on every third Monday of May. Its first written record of celebrating adulthood dates back to the Goryeo Dynasty, where King Gwangjong gifted Prince Wang Juan outfit (服装) reserved for male adults in 965.
By the late Joseon Dynasty, the ceremony marking adulthood developed into a full-grown event for the middle and upper classes, celebrated by their 15-year-olds. In this period, one of the most symbolic changes that adults-to-be went through was that boys would tie their long flowing (飘逸的) hair into a topknot (结) and cover it with at all black hat made of horsehair; likewise, girls put their hair, which they let fall as single braids (辫子) in youth, up into a knot and set it with a long hairpin (发簪).
Today, the traditional coming-of-age ceremonies still live on, supported largely by government and public interests. But a set of very different customs has also been added. Unless they apply to participate in publicly-held ceremonies or attend schools that provide these series, 19-year-olds celebrate the third Monday of May the modern way, by having a nice meal with family or drinking with their friends.
1. What led to the legal age of adulthood being lowered by a year in South Korea?
A.The realization of youth’s earlier maturity.
B.The plan to reduce economic pressure on families.
C.The determination to satisfy teenagers’ expectations.
D.The requirement for youth’s earlier practice of voting rights.
2. Who received South Korea’s first recorded coming-of-age celebration according to the text?
A.Prince Wang Juan in the Goryeo Dynasty.
B.King Gwangjong in the Goryeo Dynasty.
C.An upper-class 15-year-old in the Joseon Dynasty.
D.A middle-class 15-year-old in the Joseon Dynasty.
3. What marked the important change in celebrating adulthood during the Joseon Dynasty?
A.A new type of hairstyle. B.A specific birthday outfit.
C.Making one’s own hat with horsehair. D.Replacing short hairpins with long ones.
4. What does the last paragraph suggest?
A.Publicly-held ceremonies require group application.
B.Traditional ceremonies should be more widely practiced.
C.Teenagers nowadays prefer to celebrate adulthood at home.
D.Society has seen a wider range of adulthood celebrations.
Passage 12
(23-24高一下·陕西咸阳·阶段练习)It may seem as if Mother’s Day was invented by a company named Hallmark, but people have been giving a shout-out to Mom for a long time. A more recent tradition was Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers’ houses.
Mother’s Day as it is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginia woman who held “Mothers’ Work Days” to promote health and hygiene at home and in the workplace. During the Civil War, Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, bringing together mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers and promoting a Mother’s Day holiday.
Jarvis’s work inspired another 19th-century woman, Julia Ward Howe. In 1870, Howe published her “Mother’s Day Proclamation”, which envisioned the day not as appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power for peace. Howe started holding annual Mother’s Day celebrations in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade the tradition faded away.
It was Jarvis’s daughter, Anna, who succeeded in getting Mother’s Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died in 1905, Anna started holding yearly ceremony on the anniversary. In 1912, West Virginia and a few other states adopted Mother’s Day. Two years later, Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution naming the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, making it an official US holiday.
It wasn’t long before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy. By the 1920s, Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had created. “I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,” she said.
1. Who plays the most important role in creating Mother’s Day?
A.Ann Jarvis. B.Julia Ward Howe.
C.Woodrow Wilson. D.Anna Jarvis.
2. When was the second Sunday in May named as Mother’s Day?
A.In 1914. B.In 1912. C.In 1905. D.In 1870.
3. Why did Anna Jarvis object to Mother’s Day at last?
A.Because the festival was not profitable.
B.Because the festival made her feel emotional.
C.Because the celebrations went against the original spirit.
D.Because she had no passion on holding celebration activities.
4. What would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Objection to Mother’s Day
B.The Argument on Celebrating Mother’s Day
C.The Story Behind the Creation of Mother’s Day
D.Different Forms of Celebrations on Mother’s Day
Passage 13
LONDON (Reuters) — Quiet place — Britain’s Queen Elizabeth is preparing to have her swans counted.
Buckingham Palace has announced that the annual Swan Upping, a tradition dating back to the 12th century which involves a census (审查) of the swan population on the River Thames, will be conducted by the Queen’s official Swan Marker from July 20 to 24.
“With the assistance of the Queen’s Swan Warden, Professor Christopher Perrins of the University of Oxford, the swans and young cygnets (小天鹅) are also assessed for any signs of injury or disease,” Buckingham Palace said in announcing the count.
The process involves the Swan Marker, David Barber, rowing up the Thames for five days with the Swan Warden in traditional skiffs while wearing special scarlet uniforms and counting, weighing and measuring swans and cygnets.
It may seem odd, but it is very important to the Queen. According to custom, Britain’s sovereign owns all unmarked, mute swans in open water, but the Queen now exercises the right only on stretches of the Thames and its nearby tributaries.
In medieval times, the Swan Marker would not only travel up the river counting the swans, but would catch as many as possible as they were sought after for banquets and feasts.

Passage 15
(23-24高一下·河北保定·期末)There are always two sides to a story. Unfortunately, when it comes to the history of Thanksgiving, generations of Americans have been taught a one-sided history in homes and schools.
The mainstream cultural and historical story has been told by the white settlers (殖民者) who landed near Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts in 1620. In this version (版本)of the Thanksgiving story, the holiday celebrates the peaceful, friendly meeting of English settlers and the Wampanoag tribe (部落) for three days of feasting and thanksgiving in 1621.
This story paints a picture of courageous settlers braving the dangers of the New World and with the help of some friendly natives, finding a way to make a new life for themselves. Very few teachers get a chance to tell students about the mass killing of native tribes that took place in the years that followed.
For many Native Americans, Thanksgiving is a day of mourning (哀悼) and protest. Organised by the United American Indians of New England in1970, the fourth Thursday in November (Thanksgiving) was recognised as the NationalDay of Mourning for Native Americans.
While some Native Americans have chosen to reject the Thanksgiving holiday completely, many welcome the positive messages of the holiday without consideration of its origin. This is because the idea of giving thanks is central to Native Americans’ culture, and in this way, Thanksgiving is simply a chance to appreciate the good things of life, like family, community, and the riches of the land.
Steven Peters, a Wampanoag tribe spokesman, was asked about his views on Thanksgiving and the fact that most Native Americans still gather to eat turkey and give thanks.
“I think it’s great. My ancestors had four harvest festivals throughout the year. Gathering with family and giving thanks for all that we have is a good thing. But I ask that you take a moment on that day to remember what happened to my people and the history as it was and not what had been written in the history books.”
1. What can be learnt about the mainstream Thanksgiving story?
A.It is a faithful reflection of the history.
B.It mourns the suffering of the natives.
C.It represents only one side of the story.
D.It is about the real origin of Thanksgiving.
2. What does the underlined word “reject” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Refuse. B.Reflect.
C.Promote. D.Celebrate.
3. Why do many Native Americans celebrate Thanksgiving?
A.They are misled by history books.
B.They have adapted to modern life.
C.The history has taught them to be grateful.
D.The idea of giving thanks fits their culture.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Storytelling: No More One-Sided Approach
B.Native Americans: Let the World Hear Our Voice
C.American History: Tears and Blood of the Natives
D.Thanksgiving: A Different Story to Native Americans

LA TOMATINA (VALENCIA, SPAIN)
Started in 1945, La Tomatina is one of the oldest festivals on our list. It’s also easily the messiest, coming off like the world’s biggest food fight. 1. 根据LA TOMATINA (VALENCIA, SPAIN)部分中的“If you go, please follow some simple rules: Don’t throw hard objects; squash (压扁) the tomato before throwing it; stay a safe distance away from tomato trucks.”(如果你去参加,请遵守一些简单的规则:不要扔硬物;扔之前先把番茄压扁;与番茄卡车保持安全距离)可知,在LA TOMATINA这个节日里,你可以扔番茄。故选C项。
根据KING’S DAY (NETHERLANDS)部分中的“With the crowning (加冕) of her son, the holiday became known as King’s Day. It is now officially celebrated on April 27 (the King’s birthday).”(随着她儿子的加冕,这个节日被称为国王日。

3. 根据第三段“Homes, stores, and classrooms are decorated in the traditional Halloween colors, orange and black.(家庭、商店和教室都用传统的万圣节颜色——橙色和黑色来装饰。)”
Dog sledding is one of the fastest growing sports on the east coast of Australia. As there’s no snow (the trail is earth and sand and is smooth and wide with a few hills and turns) , the sleds have wheels instead of runners, but the excitement is the same.

A.Mighty Mud Mania B.Songkran Festival
C.The La Tomatina Festival D.Canberra Sled Dog Classic
2. How is the Songkran Festival in Thailand traditionally celebrated?
A.With a dog sledding race. B.Through a country-wide water fight.
C.By having a nationwide tomato fight. D.By building sandcastles in a muddy environment.
3. What do the festivals above have in common?
A.They are all for adults. B.They happen in the same season.
C.They all have joyful atmosphere. D.They all happen in the same country.
根据Mighty Mud (泥; 泥浆) Mania: Scottsdale, Arizona, USA部分中“Children’s dreams really do come true in the City of Scottsdale. Children aged 1 to 13, get to join in the mud race Mighty Mudway features water and mud games. (在斯科茨代尔市,孩子们的梦想真的成真了。1至13岁的小朋友可以参加泥地比赛。Mighty Mudway的特色是水和泥的游戏。)”可知,Mighty Mud Mania最适合10岁的杰克和他的弟弟。故选A项。
根据Songkran Festival, Thailand部分中“What better way to celebrate the “start of the return of rains” than with a country-wide water fight? (还有什么比在全国范围内打一场水仗更好的方式来庆祝“雨季的开始”呢?)”和“Water battles fought out for days in the streets of every town and city over the country.
根据第一段中“We have selected a few of the more unusual, colourful festivals from around the world. (我们从世界各地挑选了一些更不寻常、更丰富多彩的节日。)”和下文的介绍可知,这4个节日都具有趣味性,充满了快乐的气氛。故选C项。
根据Dinah (China)部分“I enjoy the happy atmosphere of both Chinese and Western festivals.(我喜欢中国节日和西方节日的欢乐气氛)”和“I like Western festivals and often celebrate them without even knowing the origins of them. Why? Because what I really appreciate is just the happy atmosphere. (我喜欢西方的节日,经常庆祝它们,甚至不知道它们的起源。为什么?因为我真正享受的只是快乐的气氛。)”可知,Dinah认为庆祝节日时的气氛最重要。故选A项。
根据SharkMinnow (Canada)部分“Western Festivals are more like parties or games for some Chinese. (对一些中国人来说,西方节日更像是聚会或游戏。)”和“Most Chinese don’t take Western festivals as seriously as their own. It’s like a game or party in my eyes. A way to blow off steam and have fun (and spend money). (大多数中国人并不像对待自己的节日那样重视西方节日。这就像我眼中的游戏或派对。一种发泄情绪和享受乐趣(并花钱)的方法)。”可知,SharkMinnow认为中国人并没有理解西方节日,只是把它当作一种发泄情绪和享受乐趣(并花钱)的方法,由此推知,他并不赞同中国人这样过去西方节日;根据Leesinchina (US)部分“Cherish your own festivals. It would be a pity if the Chinese accepted these Western days (珍惜你自己的节日。如果中国人接受这些西方的日子,那将是一个遗憾)”可知,Leesinchina认为中国人庆祝西方节日是一种遗憾,对其持否定态度,两人对于庆祝西方节日均持否定的态度。故选D项。

二、 进阶练习
D 2. C 3. B 4. C
根据第一段“What are pillows really stuffed with? Not physically, but symbolically? The question occurred to me with the photos of the international pillow fight in the news and social media from the 50 cities around the world. Armed with nothing more than bring-our-own pillows, strangers struck heavily each other from Amsterdam to Atlanta, Warsaw to Washington DC. But why? Is there anything more to this delightful celebration? (枕头里到底塞满了什么?不是物理上的,而是象征性的?当新闻和社交媒体上来自全球50个城市的国际枕头大战照片出现时,我想到了这个问题。从阿姆斯特丹到亚特兰大,从华沙到华盛顿特区,陌生人只带着我们自己的枕头,互相殴打。但为什么呢?这个令人愉快的庆典还有什么别的吗?)”可知,第一段利用了问题来引入这篇文章的话题。故选D。
2. 推理判断题。根据第二段“Actually, since at least the 16th century, the soft pillow has been given symbolic meanings. (事实上,至少从16世纪开始,软枕头就被赋予了象征意义。)”可知,第二段列出了这三位作家的作品和文字是为了要说明枕头可以象征性地传达意义。故选C。
3. 词句猜测题。根据第二段“What’s more, the 19th-century English novelist, Charlotte Bronte, poetically observed “a ruffled mind makes a restless pillow”. Perhaps Bronte learned this from the philosopher, Montaigne, who once insisted that “lack of thoughts in mind is the softest pillow on which a man can have a good rest”.
根据最后一段“Just like a ceremony of release, the annual international pillow fight amounts to a kind of cleansing, a brushing off of daily worries: an emptying of the world’s restless mind. (就像一场释放仪式一样,一年一度的国际枕头大战相当于一种净化,一种消除日常担忧的方式:清空世界上躁动不安的心灵。)”可知,人们在国际枕头大战中会感到宽慰。故选C。
Passage 7

C 2. A 3. D 4. D
根据文章第一段“From boats competitions, camel races, to outdoor concerts, Australians mark a public holiday more popularly treated as a late summer festival than the serious national day its founders intended it to be—a unifying celebration of the good fortune of being Australian and the values that unite the nation: freedom, independence, a fair go, mateship. (从划船比赛、骆驼比赛到户外音乐会,澳大利亚人将这个公共假日视为夏末的节日,而不是其创始人所打算的严肃的国庆日——这是一个统一的节日,庆祝作为澳大利亚人的好运和团结这个国家的价值观:自由、独立、公平竞争、伙伴关系)”可知,澳大利亚日的最初目的是作为国庆日,庆祝国家认同感和价值观。故选C项。
2. 词句猜测题。根据文章第二段划线词之前“However, not all Australians feel the same about the day. Recently there has been much controversy over the correctness of celebrating on this date. Native Australians, in particular, have long referred to this date as “Invasion (入侵) Day” or “National Day of Mourning (哀悼)” in protest of the arrival of the British peoples. (然而,并不是所有澳大利亚人都对这一天有同样的感受。最近,人们对在这一天庆祝的正确性有很多controversy。特别是澳大利亚原住民,长期以来一直将这一天称为“入侵日”或“全国哀悼日”,以抗议英国人民的到来)”可知,澳大利亚人对于澳大利亚日有着不同的看法,所以关于这个日期庆祝的正确性是有分歧的,由此可以推测划线词的意思应为“争议,争端”,与A项Debate(争论)意思相近。故选A项。
根据文章第二段“Native Australians, in particular, have long referred to this date as “Invasion (入侵) Day” or “National Day of Mourning (哀悼)” in protest of the arrival of the British peoples. They mourn their ancestors who suffered and died during colonization (特别是澳大利亚原住民,长期以来一直将这一天称为“入侵日”或“全国哀悼日”,以抗议英国人民的到来。他们哀悼在殖民期间遭受苦难和死亡的祖先。)”可知,英国人的到来给土著澳大利亚人带来了生命的损失和磨难。故选D项。
4. 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“In response to the protests, the Australian government has recognized the traditional owners of the lands on which Australia Day activities take place, in the hope that Australians from all backgrounds come together to celebrate Australia as a multicultural society. “Our desire is that Australia Day is a time for inclusion, as well as an opportunity for greater understanding,” one officer from The Australian Department of Communications and the Arts said.(作为对抗议活动的回应,澳大利亚政府承认了举办澳大利亚日活动的土地的传统所有者,希望来自不同背景的澳大利亚人走到一起,庆祝澳大利亚是一个多元文化的社会。“我们的愿望是,澳大利亚日是一个包容的日子,也是一个增进理解的机会,”澳大利亚通信和艺术部的一名官员说)”可知,从文章最后一段可以推出我们应该怀着理解和尊重来庆祝澳大利亚日。故选D项。
D 2. A 3. C 4. D
通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段中“However, I believe that only reading magazines and newspapers as a way of learning about a foreign country has several limitations. (然而,我认为仅仅通过阅读杂志和报纸来了解外国是有一些局限性的。)”和第三段中“I think that the best way to learn about a foreign country is to travel or live there for a while. (我认为了解一个国家最好的方法是去那里旅行或生活一段时间。)”可知,本文主要讨论了了解外国最好的方法是什么,作者认为旅行或在国外生活一段时间是最好的方式,而不是仅仅通过阅读杂志和报纸。故选D。
2. 词句猜测题。根据第二段中“However, the information that they present is often one-sided, so that readers can only learn about one opinion on an event happening in a foreign country. (然而,它们提供的信息往往是片面的,因此读者只能了解到一种对发生在国外的事件的看法。)”可知,前后两句构成转折关系,划线句子的句意为:我们不能否认杂志和报纸实际上提供了一些关于国外的有价值的信息。此处deny应意为“否认”。A. Disagree不同意;B. Promise承诺;C. Realize意识到;D. Accept接受。故选A。
由第二段中“However, the information that they present is often one-sided, so that readers can only learn about one opinion on an event happening in a foreign country. Also, the words and pictures in magazines and newspapers may not be true. If a government wants to hide some facts, it may force the media to tell lies to its readers, and thus the information that readers receive may not be true. (然而,它们提供的信息往往是片面的,因此读者只能了解到一种对发生在国外的事件的看法。此外,杂志和报纸上的文字和图片可能不是真的。如果政府想要隐瞒一些事实,它可能会迫使媒体对读者说谎,因此读者收到的信息可能不是真实的。)”可知,杂志和报纸上的信息往往是片面的,并且可能不真实,因此它们提供的信息是有限的且不一定总是真实的。故选C。
4. 细节理解题。由第三段“I think that the best way to learn about a foreign country is to travel or live there for a while.

4. What do we know about St Patrick’s Day?
A.It is no longer a religious festival for the Irish. B.It has the largest parade in Ireland.
C.It was first celebrated in the United States. D.It has now become an international festival.
A 2. C 3. C 4. D

A 2. A 3. A 4. D

根据第二段第二句“Its first written record of celebrating adulthood dates back to the Goryeo Dynasty, where King Gwangjong gifted Prince Wang Juan outfit (服装) reserved for male adults in 965.(最早的成人庆祝文字记录要追溯到高丽时期,公元965年,广宗王将成人服装赠给了王伷王子)”可知,高丽王朝时期的王伷王子接受了韩国第一个有记录的成年庆典。故选A。
根据第三段第二句“In this period, one of the most symbolic changes that adults-to-be went through was that boys would tie their long flowing (飘逸的) hair into a topknot (结) and cover it with at all black hat made of horsehair; likewise, girls put their hair, which they let fall as single braids (辫子) in youth, up into a knot and set it with a long hairpin (发簪).(在这一时期,即将成为成年人的人所经历的最具象征意义的变化之一是,男孩们会把他们飘逸的长发扎成一个顶髻,然后戴上由马毛制成的黑色帽子;同样地,女孩们把年轻时散成单根辫子的头发扎成一个结,然后用一个长发夹扎起来)”可知,在何塞王朝,庆祝成年的重要变化是发型的变化。故选A。
根据最后一段前两句“Today, the traditional coming-of-age ceremonies still live on, supported largely by government and public interests. But a set of very different customs has also been added.(今天,传统的成人仪式仍然存在,主要是由政府和公共利益支持的。但也增加了一套非常不同的习俗)”可推知,最后一段表明社会上庆祝成年的方式越来越多。故选D。
A.The Objection to Mother’s Day
B.The Argument on Celebrating Mother’s Day
C.The Story Behind the Creation of Mother’s Day
D.Different Forms of Celebrations on Mother’s Day
D 2. A 3. C 4. C

故选A项。
根据最后一段“It wasn’t long before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under an amount of greeting cards and candy. By the 1920s, Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had created. “I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,” she said. (没过多久,这一天应该庆祝的理想就被一大堆贺卡和糖果淹没了。到了20世纪20年代,Anna Jarvis开始反对她创造的这个节日。“我希望这是一个充满情感的日子,而不是为了赚钱,”她说)”可知,母亲节的庆祝活动变成为了赚钱,违背了这个节日最初的精神,因此最终Anna Jarvis反对庆祝母亲节。故选C项。
4. 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“It may seem as if Mother’s Day was invented by a company named Hallmark, but people have been giving a shout-out to Mom for a long time. (母亲节似乎是由一家名为Hallmark的公司发明的,但人们对妈妈的赞美由来已久)”可知,本文围绕母亲节展开,介绍了其悠久的历史传统,最终成为一个全国性的节日的经过,以及最后性质的变化。因此,C项“母亲节背后的故事”契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选C项。
This year, the Swan Marker and the Swan Warden are particularly keen to discover how much damage is being caused to swans and cygnets by attacks from dogs and from discarded fishing tackle (渔具).
It is also an important year because Queen Elizabeth has decided to join her team of Swan Uppers for part of the census. She will follow them up the river and visit a local school project on the whole subject of swans, cygnets and the Thames.
“Education and conservation are essential to the role of Swan Upping and the involvement of school children is always a rewarding experience,” Buckingham Palace said.

C 2. A 3. D 4. D
根据第一段“There are always two sides to a story. Unfortunately, when it comes to the history of Thanksgiving, generations of Americans have been taught a one-sided history in homes and schools.(故事总是有两面性的。不幸的是,当谈到感恩节的历史时,几代美国人在家庭和学校里被灌输了片面的历史)”以及第二段的“The mainstream cultural and historical story has been told by the white settlers (殖民者) who landed near Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts in 1620.
故选A。
根据第五段的“This is because the idea of giving thanks is central to Native Americans’ culture, and in this way, Thanksgiving is simply a chance to appreciate the good things of life, like family, community, and the riches of the land.(这是因为感恩的理念是美洲原住民文化的核心,因此,感恩节只是一个欣赏生活中美好事物的机会,比如家庭、社区和土地的财富)”可知,许多原住民庆祝感恩节是因为感恩的理念符合他们的文化传统。故选D。
根据第一段“There are always two sides to a story. Unfortunately, when it comes to the history of Thanksgiving, generations of Americans have been taught a one-sided history in homes and schools.(故事总是有两面性的。不幸的是,当谈到感恩节的历史时,几代美国人在家庭和学校里被灌输了片面的历史)”以及全文可知,全文探讨了感恩节对于原住民来说有着不同的含义,不仅仅是庆祝,也包含哀悼和抗议,以及他们如何从自己的文化角度看待这个节日。因此,最合适的标题是“感恩节:对原住民来说是一个不同的故事”。故选D。
