(23-24高一下·广东东莞·阶段练习)Jim Denevan is an amazing artist whose work is admired by many people, but owned by none—that’s because all of Jim’s art is created on an unusual canvas (画布)—the soft sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it.
Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was walking aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then, Jim has traveled over 1,800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art.
Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven’t changed—all he needs is a stick, a garden rake (耙) and most importantly, his lively imagination!
Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the quality of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, in search of perfect sand. His latest piece of work was created in the desert sands of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it. However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain wash his paintings away.
Jim’s art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary named Sandman in 2005. Jim Denevan is not just a sand artist—he is also an excellent cook and started an organization called “Outstanding in the Field”, whose motto (座右铭) is to celebrate food at its source. Therefore, group dining events are held outdoors on farms, with the diners treated to a delicious meal. Passage 8
(23-24高一下·广东广州·期中)George Gershwin, born in 1898, was one of America's greatest composers. He published his first song when he was eighteen years old. During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs.
Many of Gershwin's songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of his songs have remained popular as ever. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way — from jazz to country.
In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music. Could jazz, some people asked, be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. And in that short time, he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular.
In 1928, Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him. She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics(评论家) were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life, to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works.

Passage 9
(23-24高一下·福建福州·期中)In Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, you can find Jamey Turner playing an unusual musical instrument, the glass harp (竖琴). A glass harp is made up of different-sized drinking glasses, each filled with water.
Turner makes music by running his fingers over the top s of the glasses. When he does so, each glass makes a different musical sound. Visitors like what they see and hear. They thank Turner by leaving a donation of a dollar or more in his box. Jamey Turner is 78 years old now. He first became interested in playing the glass harp at the age of six when he heard his father playing with a glass of water at the dinner table. He has been playing it for 50 years.
Today Turner puts together his instrument by placing 60 different glasses on a wooden soundboard. He holds the glasses in place with rubber bands, which keeps them from breaking. He then adds different amounts of water to each one to create different musical notes. Adding more water to a glass will make a lower sound. The smaller bowls of water produce a higher sound, while larger ones produce a lower, deeper sound.
Turner always uses low-priced glass considering that it sounds better than costly crystal (水晶), and he has more control over the sound. Before buying new glasses, he will test them in stores. He decides if they produce the right sound by rubbing (摩擦) his finger over the top of them.
The glass harp was popular 300 years ago when composers like Wolfgang Mozart wrote music for the instrument. About 400 pieces of music have been written just for the glass harp. But Turner plays all kinds of music, even popular music from China. Few people play the glass harp these days, but Turner says he sees videos of people experimenting with the instrument on YouTube. He hopes the next generation will continue making music with it.

Passage 10
(23-24高一下·安徽蚌埠·期中)When Andres Valencia starts drawing at school, his friends gather around to watch. And they are not the only ones who have noticed his talent. Andres has surprised the art world as Andres by making his first global auction (拍卖).
The Californian art talent first picked up a paintbrush when he was five and now sells his pieces for tens of thousands of dollars. He has even been called “Little Picasso”. He uses a stepladder (折梯) to create his larger works and his talent was found early by his parents, Guadalupe, a lawyer, and Elsa, a jewelry designer. They encouraged his work, which is influenced by Pablo Picasso, but just wanted him to enjoy painting.
“To be quite honest, we try not to talk too much about it in front of him,” Mr. Valencia, his father, told CNN. “We certainly don’t refer to him as talent or anything like that. We just keep it simple with him. At home, he just does his art.”
Mr. Valencia said that he and his wife had resisted calls to homeschool their son so that he could focus more on painting. “We want him to go to school like a normal kid,” he said. “And because he’s a primary school student, he’s not like a lot of artists, who spend six, eight, or ten hours a day painting. He paints after school and on weekends, and he also plays with his friends.”
Andres earned global recognition at Miami Art Week. Art Miami director Nick Korniloff said that experts were impressed before they knew Andres’ age. Mr. Korniloff said, “We’ve had everybody attend our shows, all great famous persons, and personalities, but this little boy brought down the house.”

Passage 11
(23-24高一下·浙江·期中)For some people, music is no fun at all. About 4% of the population is what scientists call “amusic”. People who are amusic are born without the ability to enjoy musical notes. Amusic people often cannot tell the differences between two songs.
As a result, songs sound like noise to an amusic. Many amusics compare the sound of music to pieces of metal hitting each other. Life can be hard for amusics. In fact, most people cannot understand what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping center can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics have to stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in social loneliness. “I used to hate parties,” says Margaret, a seventy-year-old woman who only recently discovered that she was amusic. By studying people like Margaret, scientists are finally learning how to identify this unusual condition.
Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from those of people who can enjoy music. The difference is complex, as it is not connected with poor hearing and has nothing to do with intelligence. Amusics can understand other non-musical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding common speech. Scientists compare amusics to people who just can’t see certain colors.
Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed (诊断). For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her music problem. Now she knows that she is not alone. That makes it easier for her to explain. “When people invite me to a concert, I just say ‘No, thanks. I’m amusic,’” says Margaret.
1. Amusics are the people who ________
A.have a preference for music. B.have trouble in hearing.
C.have a talent for music. D.are born unable to enjoy music.
2. Life is hard for amusics mainly because ________
A.they fail to understand music. B.they find their normal life disturbed.
C.they try to stay at the place full of music. D.they regard music as noise.
3. What does the underlined word “complex” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Difficult. B.Obvious. C.Basic D.Small.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Some people’s musical ability. B.Some people’s inability to enjoy music.
C.Amusics’ strange behaviors. D.Diagnosis and treatment of amusics.
D 2. B 3. A 4. B

根据第二段中的“In fact, most people cannot understand what it feels like to be amusic. Just going to a restaurant or a shopping center can be uncomfortable or even painful. That is why many amusics have to stay away from places where there is music. However, this can result in social loneliness.(事实上,大多数人无法理解成为一名音盲是什么感觉。只是去餐馆或购物中心可能会感到不舒服甚至痛苦。这就是为什么许多音盲必须远离有音乐的地方。此外,这可能会导致社交孤独。)”可知,有音盲的人是无法被人理解的,而且他们去参观或者购物中心都会不舒服甚至是痛苦,这还可能会导致社交孤独,他们正常的生活可能受到影响,从而推知,有音盲的人生活艰难主要是因为他们的正常生活受到了干扰。故选B项。
3. 词句猜测题。根据划线单词前的“Scientists say that the brains of amusics are different from those of people who can enjoy music.(科学家们说,音盲的大脑与能欣赏音乐的人的大脑不同。)”可知,科学家发现,音盲的大脑与能欣赏音乐的人的大脑不同,结合划线单词后的“as it is not connected with poor hearing and has nothing to do with intelligence.(因为它与听力差无关,也与智力无关。)”可知,这种差异与听力差和智力均无关系,结合下文中的“Amusics can understand other non-musical sounds well. They also have no problems understanding common speech. (音盲可以很好地理解其他非音乐性的声音。他们在理解普通语言方面也没有问题。)”可知,音盲也能理解其他非音乐声音,而且理解普通语言也没有问题,综合以上信息可知,这种差异是难以理解的,所以划线单词的意思与“难理解的”意义相近。故选A项。
根据第一段中的“About 4% of the population is what scientists call “amusic”. People who are amusic are born without the ability to enjoy musical notes. Amusic people often cannot tell the differences between two songs.(大约4% 的人口是科学家所说的“音盲”。音盲的人生来就没有欣赏音符的能力。音盲常常分辨不出两首歌之间的区别。)”以及下文中介绍的音盲带来的影响、音盲的大脑与其他能欣赏音乐的人的大脑的差异分析和对音盲的诊断给音盲者带来的快乐可知,本文主要介绍了没有音乐欣赏能力的一类人,他们被称为“音盲”,文章就这类人的特点展开介绍。故选B项。

Already a superstar before 2023, Swift's career has reached new heights thanks to the beginning of her Eras Tour that brought her 3. 5-hour performance to 66 shows in 23 cities across North America, Argentina and Brazil. Promoted by her tour, Swift has been named the most-streamed female artist in the history of Spotify and Apple Music. Apart from her financial contributions, Swift made a significant cultural impact by taking back control of her music. In response to this, Swift began re-recording her first six albums, tagging (加标签于) them “Taylor's Version”. This move stressed her belief that artists deserve to own their work. “It's all in how you deal with loss,” she told Time. “I respond to extreme pain by resisting.”
Heading into 2024, Swift will start the Eras Tour again in Japan and Australia. As USA Today noted, “Her current top has been a long time coming, but it may also be just beginning.”

Passage 15
(23-24高一下·湖北·阶段练习)We generally don’t enjoy being sad in real life, but we do enjoy art that makes us feel that way. That is the paradox (悖论) of sad music, which countless scholars have tried to account for it.
Mario Attie-Picker, a philosopher at Loyola University Chicago, proposed a relatively simple idea: Maybe we listen to music not for an emotional reaction — many subjects reported that sad music, although artistic, was not particularly enjoyable — but for the sense of connection to others. This helps explain our love of sad music: it’s not about enjoying sadness, but valuing the connection it provides.
Supporting this idea is the work of Patrik Juslin, a music psychologist who believe that there are cognitive mechanisms through which sadness can be induced (诱发) in listeners. Maybe, sadness is such a strong emotion and its presence can cause a positive empathetic reaction: Feeling someone’s sadness can move you in some way. “You’re feeling just alone,” said Dr. Knobe, an experimental philosopher and psychologist at Yale University. “And then there’s the similar experience where you listen to some music, or you pick up a book, and you feel like you’re not so alone.”
To explore this, an experiment was conducted. They gave one of four song descriptions to more than 400 participants. One description was of a song that “delivers deep and complex emotions” but was also “technically bad”. Another described a “technically perfect” song that “does not deliver deep or complex emotions”. The third song was described as deeply emotional and technically perfect, and the fourth as technically bad and unemotional.
The participants were asked to evaluate whether their song “shows what music is all about”. The result was that deeply emotional but technically bad songs best reflected what the music is; emotional expression was a more evident value than technical performance. Music is more than a collection of notes and rhythms — it is a powerful medium for shared human experiences. Sad music, in particular, allows us to feel understood and less lonely.
1. According to Mario Attie-Picker, why do we love listening to sad music?
A.It helps us feel connected to others. B.It provides us with artistic enjoyment.
C.It brings us a strong emotional reaction. D.It deepens and proves our love for music.
2. What does the underlined word “empathetic” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Not feeling lonely anymore.
B.Being capable of stirring strong emotions.
C.Understanding and sharing the feelings of others.
D.Attempting to go through the similar experiences.
3. What can be inferred from the the experiment?
A.Emotional expression outweighs technical skills.
B.Technically bad performance moves people most.
C.Over 400 participants performed four different songs.
D.Sad music is much easier to perform and understand.
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.How does Sad Music Lift Our Spirits? B.Why does Music Bring People Together?
C.How do We Understand Music Better? D.Why do We Like Sad Music?
A 2. C 3. A 4. D
文章第二段讲到“Maybe we listen to music not for an emotional reaction — many subjects reported that sad music, although artistic, was not particularly enjoyable — but for the sense of connection to others. (也许我们听音乐不是为了情绪反应——许多受试者报告说,悲伤的音乐虽然很艺术,但并不特别令人愉快——而是为了与他人的联系。)”可知,Mario Attie-Picker 认为我们喜欢听悲伤的音乐是因为我们想要与他人有情感上的联系。故选A。
划线单词下文“Feeling someone’s sadness can move you in some way. “You’re feeling just alone,” said Dr. Knobe, an experimental philosopher and psychologist at Yale University. “And then there’s the similar experience where you listen to some music, or you pick up a book, and you feel like you’re not so alone.”(感受到别人的悲伤会在某种程度上打动你。耶鲁大学实验哲学家和心理学家Knobe博士说:“你感觉很孤独”。“还有类似的经历,你听一些音乐,或者拿起一本书,你会觉得自己并不孤单。”)”可知,empathetic指代能感受他人的悲伤、体会类似的经历、不再感到悲伤,由此,第三段中带下划线单词的意思是 “理解和分享他人的感受”。故选C。
3. 推理判断题。文章最后一段讲到“The result was that deeply emotional but technically bad songs best reflected what the music is; emotional expression was a more evident value than technical performance. (结果是,情感深刻但技术上不好的歌曲最能反映音乐的本质;情感表达比技术表现更有价值。)”,这句可以推断出在音乐中,人们更看重音乐的情绪表现而不是技术表现,可知,从实验中可以推断出情感表达胜过技术技巧。故选A。
由文章的第一段“We generally don’t enjoy being sad in real life, but we do enjoy art that makes us feel that way (我们通常不喜欢在现实生活中悲伤,但我们确实喜欢让我们有这种感觉的艺术)”描述了人们喜欢听悲伤的音乐这一现象,最后一段“Music is more than a collection of notes and rhythms — it is a powerful medium for shared human experiences. Sad music, in particular, allows us to feel understood and less lonely. (音乐不仅仅是音符和节奏的集合,它是人类分享经验的强大媒介。尤其是悲伤的音乐,让我们感到被理解,不那么孤独。)”呈现了实验的结果,表明悲伤的音乐尤其能够让人们被理解、不再孤独。可知,D项Why We Like Sad Music “为什么我们喜欢悲伤的音乐”应该为最佳标题。故选D。

Passage 6

2. How does Turner change the sounds of the glasses?
A.By placing glasses on a wooden board.
B.By beating different parts of the glasses.

D.By holding different glasses with rubber bands
3. Why does Turner prefer to use cheap glasses?
A.To save more money.
B.To protect his fingers.
C.To adjust beats easily.
D.To produce better sounds.
4. What does Turner expect of the glass harp?
A.It can be passed on.
B.Students can study it in school.
C.It can be used to play all sorts of music.
D.More composers can write music for it.
Mr. Korniloff was unwilling to predict how much the primary school student’s work may be worth to future investors but was positive that it would last “His works are as good as anything else I’ve seen in a long career,” he said.
1. What was Andres Valencia’s parents’ expectation of him?
A.He could focus on his study. B.He could become another Picasso.
C.He could enjoy himself painting. D.He could be famous at an early age.
2. Why did Andres Valencia’s parents refuse to homeschool their son?
A.They had little time to help him study.
B.They wanted him to live a normal life.
C.They wanted more people to know his talent.
D.They planned to make him paint for longer hours.
3. What did Mr. Korniloff think about Andres Valencia’s future?
A.He expressed his confidence. B.He showed no interest.
C.He voiced his doubts. D.He expressed his disappointment.
4. What is the main idea of the text?

Passage 14
Adding to the achievements of a remarkable year, Taylor Swift has been named Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2023.
According to Billboard, the tour made about$900 million (about 6. 4 billion yuan) in 2023. This move stressed her belief that artists deserve to own their work. “It's all in how you deal with loss,” she told Time. “I respond to extreme pain by resisting.”

A.It helps us feel connected to others. B.It provides us with artistic enjoyment.
