Father Lei Mingliang, mother Zhang Yuanhuang, and brother Lei Zhengde passed away one after another when he was seven years old. His uncle and his grandmother raised him up. December 18, 1940 3 Growth Process（成长过程） The Chinese People’s Liberation Army （中国人民解放军）passed by his hometown. The soliders were kind and friendly to local people. They helped the old and the poor people do a lot of things such as carrying water, cutting firewood. The soliders never took any property from the masses（不拿群众的一针一线），which won the admiration and respect from the local people. From that time, Leifeng had a strong desire to join the army. August, 1949 4 Growth Process（成长过程） Leifeng joined the army in January, 1960 and the the Communist Party of China in November. He was arranged to be a military driver soldier（汽车兵）. He worked hard to study and practice driving skills. Finally, he became a qualified and excellent military driver. Later, he was elected as the monitor. He helped the old and weak carry luggage. He worked as a waiter to serve the passengers. People have been saying that “Lei Feng travels a thousand miles, and good deeds make a train.” When Lei Feng was changing trains at Shenyang Railway Station, he found some people watching a middle-aged woman with a child on her back. It turned out that the woman had lost her ticket and money. Without hesitation, Lei Feng bought a train ticket for her using his own allowance （津贴） . With tears in her eyes, the woman asked: “What’s your name and where do you live? ” Lei Feng answered:“My name is the People’s Liberation Army ,and I live in China.” 8 Lei Feng’s Life Story He worked as a part-time teacher for free to teach children knowledge and enouge them to be indepenpent. He was modest and never show up what he had done. So he carried a book with him all the time.
