I am lucky enough to live here in the Forest of Dean. I taught home economics for over 40 years and I’m now retired, but do bed and breakfast, and cook privately in other people’s homes. Together with our grandchildren, this keeps me busy.
The kitchen has a lot of glass and exposed steel work, which gives it a contemporary, almost industrial feel, which is combined with more traditional elements like the cabinetry (橱柜). We built the kitchen extension to take advantage of the location and views of the garden and beyond. It has carefully placed picture windows, which provide ever-changing views as the seasons continue.
We decided to move the kitchen from one end of the barn (仓库) to the next, in order to take advantage of the views. Our architect creatively transformed our basic concept by turning it 90 degrees to include a large glass wall, which we hadn’t thought of. I am always cooking, so I wanted plenty of space, and the ability to entertain on a large scale(大范围) as well as somewhere for the two of us to eat. I love the size, the natural light and the peace and quiet, together with the amazing outlook.
We have a large family and the open nature of the kitchen and outdoor terrace make it great for entertaining -but the most relaxing moment is sitting with a cup of tea and, Bill, our dog. I also enjoy the early mornings, watching the sunrise when no one else is up. I particularly love festivals in spring when all the family is home. The weather is warming up, we can open the doors to the garden, and the grandchildren are hunting for surprises from mother nature.

6. Why did the author and her family move the kitchen?
A. To have bigger room for meals.
B. To obtain better visual effects.
C. To follow the architect’s advice.
D. To offer more family activities.
7. What’s the author’s attitude towards her life now?
A. Anxious. B. Content. C. Sensitive. D. Doubtful.
A 5. C 6. B 7. B

A newly discovered planet could provide a window into Earth’s future, billions of years from now.
In around one billion years, our Sun will swell to a red giant, absorbing Mercury and Venus during its growth. This process is called red giant period. There’s a chance that Earth could be spared. As it swells, the Sun will start losing mass (质量), which will cause its planets to migrate outwards, meaning Earth could race ahead of the growing star.“Whether life can survive on Earth through that red giant period is unknown. Our Sun will begin the long transformation into becoming a white dwarf (白矮星),” says Jessica Lu from the research team of UC, Berkeley, which discovered the planet.
The planet KMT-2020-BLG-0414L b is located about 4,000 light years away. It is about the same mass as Earth but it orbits a white dwarf star at twice the distance. In 2020, it was discovered using a method called microlensing (微透镜将就) where the light from a far star, or source star, is made brighter by the gravity of a closer star, or lens star. By studying how the light brightens, the research team found this planet orbiting the lens star.
Three years later, the source star moved away. The team returned to observe the lens star on its own, only to find the star was too cloudy to be seen. “Our conclusions are based on removing various possibilities, since a normal star would have been easily seen by astronomers,” says Keming Zhang, who led the research team. “Because the lens star is both dark and low mass, we concluded that it can only be a white dwarf.”
Will the future of the earth be like that of that planet? Only time will tell.
8. What does the underlined word “swell” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Reduce. B. Belong. C. Move D. Expand.
9. What can we know about the planet KMT-2020-BLG-0414L b?
A. It orbits a white dwarf. B. It is as large as the Earth.
C. It is not far from the Earth. D. Its light helped find planets.
10. What do Keming Zhang’s words mean?
A. Astronomers will find more lens stars.
B. People can distinctly see a normal star.
C. A white dwarf is dark and low mass.
D. Various discoveries led to their conclusions.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Distant Planet Is Moving Closer to Earth
B. Earth Will Be Absorbed by the Sun One Day
C. New Planet’s Discovery Indicates Earth will Become Lifeless
D. Newly Discovered Planet Betters Our Understanding of Earth’s Future
D 9. A 10. C 11. D
由文章第二段中“In around one billion years, our Sun will swell to a red giant, absorbing Mercury and Venus during its growth. (大约10亿年后,我们的太阳将swell成一颗红巨星,在它的成长过程中吸收水星和金星。)”可知,大约10亿年后,我们的太阳会膨胀成一颗红巨星,在其成长过程中会吞噬水星和金星。因此,swell在此处的意思是“扩大,膨胀”,与expand“扩大”意思相近。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第三段中“The planet KMT-2020-BLG-0414L b is located about 4,000 light years away. It is about the same mass as Earth but it orbits a white dwarf star at twice the distance. (行星KMT-2020-BLG-0414L b距离地球约4000光年。它质量和地球差不多,但它绕着一颗距离是地球两倍的白矮星运行。)”可知,该行星绕着一颗白矮星运行。故选A。
由文章第四段中““Our conclusions are based on removing various possibilities, since a normal star would have been easily seen by astronomers,” says Keming Zhang, who led the research team. “Because the lens star is both dark and low mass, we concluded that it can only be a white dwarf.” (“我们的结论是建立在排除各种可能性的基础上的,因为一颗正常的恒星很容易被天文学家看到,”研究小组的负责人张克明说。“因为这颗透镜星既暗又低质量,所以我们得出结论,它只能是一颗白矮星。”)”可知,他的话意思是白矮星既黑暗又质量低。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“A newly discovered planet could provide a window into Earth’s future, billions of years from now. (一颗新发现的行星可能为我们了解几十亿年后地球的未来提供了一扇窗口。)”可知,文章主要讲述了新发现的行星对我们了解地球未来的意义,因此最适合的标题是“Newly Discovered Planet Betters Our Understanding of Earth’s Future (新发现的行星让我们更好地了解地球的未来)”。故选D。
D
From long and winding migration fights to complex songs and clever tool use, many bird behaviors are known to be shared socially and to carry on through generations — what scientists define as animal “culture”. Now a study suggests culture might play a role in bird architecture, too.
Researchers analyzed more than 400 structures built by 43 different groups of sparrows (麻雀) in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. The scientists found that different gatherings of birds, even those living only a few meters from one another, built very different tube structures. The biggest difference was in “how short or long the structures are,” says study lead author Maria C. Tello-Ramos, a biologist at the University of Hull in England. Tube width also varied between groups. Furthermore, each group maintained the same architectural style over time — and when outsiders joined, they adapted to this style.
To examine why the groups built differently, the team analyzed factors that can determine a nest’s size and shape for a given bird species: weather conditions, tree height, individuals’ body size and genetic (基因的) relatedness. Yet none of these factors seemed to play a related role in shaping how the Kalahari sparrows built their nests, the researchers report in Science. Tello-Ramos and her colleagues suggested that cultural sharing might be key to nest building. “In our paper, we haven’t gotten there yet with experiments, but we have very good clues that this might be it,” she says.
“These are important questions that are understudied,” says Christina Riehl, a biologist at Princeton University. She’s not convinced the study’s data are enough to fully remove genetic influence. “They can’t actually look at the effect of genetic differences, because they don’t have really good genetic information on all the individuals in these groups,” she says. “I think there’s a lot left to be done, and I think this paper will inspire future research in a really good way.”
12. What is the purpose of writing paragraph 1?
A. To give examples. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To make an assumption. D. To express a viewpoint.
13. What’s the finding of researching different groups of sparrow nests?
A. They are most different in shape.
B. They are open to all groups of sparrows.
C. They keep the same architectural style.
D. They are of different length and width.
14. How did Tello-Ramos and her colleagues draw their conclusion in the paper?
A. By removing the impossible factors.
B. By carrying on experiments.
C. By collecting enough proofs.
D. By referring to historical data.
15. What does Riehl think of the study according to the last paragraph?
A. It is not perfect but inspiring. B. It is good but not necessary.
C. It is not accurate but detailed. D. It is different but not challenging.
B 13. D 14. C 15. A

根据文章第一段“From long and winding migration fights to complex songs and clever tool use, many bird behaviors are known to be shared socially and to carry on through generations — what scientists define as animal “culture”. Now a study suggests culture might play a role in bird architecture, too.(从漫长而曲折的迁徙战斗到复杂的歌声和聪明的工具使用,鸟类的许多行为都是社会共享的,并代代相传——科学家们将其定义为动物的‘文化’。现在一项研究表明,文化也可能在鸟类的建筑中发挥作用。)”可知,第一段先阐述了鸟类存在 “文化” 这一普遍认知,然后引出“文化可能在鸟类建筑中也起作用”这一话题,起到了引入主题的作用。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The biggest difference was in “how short or long the structures are,” says study lead author Maria C. Tello-Ramos, a biologist at the University of Hull in England. Tube width also varied between groups.(该研究的第一作者、英国赫尔大学的生物学家玛丽亚・C・特略—拉莫斯表示,最大的差异在于‘结构的长短’。不同群体间的管道宽度也有所不同。)”可知,研究不同种类的麻雀巢穴发现,不同麻雀群体建造的巢穴在长度和宽度上有差异。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段中“Researchers analyzed more than 400 structures built by 43 different groups of sparrows (麻雀) in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa.(研究人员分析了非洲南部喀拉哈里沙漠中43种不同麻雀群建造的400多个结构。)”以及第三段“To examine why the groups built differently, the team analyzed factors that can determine a nest’s size and shape for a given bird species: weather conditions, tree height, individuals’ body size and genetic (基因的) relatedness. Yet none of these factors seemed to play a related role in shaping how the Kalahari sparrows built their nests, the researchers report in Science. Tello-Ramos and her colleagues suggested that cultural sharing might be key to nest building. “In our paper, we haven’t gotten there yet with experiments, but we have very good clues that this might be it,” she says.(为了研究为什么这些群体的筑巢方式不同,研究小组分析了决定特定鸟类巢穴大小和形状的因素:天气条件、树木高度、个体体型和遗传亲缘关系。
根据文章最后一段““They can’t actually look at the effect of genetic differences, because they don’t have really good genetic information on all the individuals in these groups,” she says. “I think there’s a lot left to be done, and I think this paper will inspire future research in a really good way.”(‘他们实际上无法看到遗传差异的影响,因为他们没有这些群体中所有个体的真正好的遗传信息。’她说:‘我认为还有很多工作要做,我认为这篇论文将以一种非常好的方式启发未来的研究。’)”可知,Riehl 认为该研究的数据不足以完全排除基因的影响,说明她觉得研究并不完美;同时她又提到“this paper will inspire future research in a really good way(这篇论文将以一种非常积极的方式激发未来的研究)”,表明研究具有启发性。故选A。

Mary, a nine year old girl in Fort Wayne, Indiana, suffered cerebral palsy (脑瘫), and her way of speaking and walking was different from that of ordinary people. So she was often teased at school. “Watch,” a tall boy yelled, and took hold of his right leg and imitated (模仿) the way Mary limped (瘸) when she walked.
Mary closed her eyes. “Ignore him,” she told herself as she headed for her classroom.
But at the end of the day, Mary was still thinking about the tall boy’s teasing. Kids laughed at her about her speech or her limping. Mary was tired of it. Sometimes, even in a classroom full of other students, the teasing made her feel all alone.
Back home at the dinner table that evening, Mary was quiet. Her mother knew that things were not going well at school. “There’s a Christmas wish contest on the radio station,” Mary’s mom announced. “Write a letter to Santa, and you might win a prize.”
A smile took hold of Mary when an idea first came to her. Out came pencil and paper, and Mary went to work on her letter to Santa Claus. In the letter she described her problem at school and asked Santa for help, hoping to get one day when no one laughed at her or made fun of her.
At radio station WJLT in Fort Wayne, Indiana, letters poured in for the Christmas wish contest. The workers had fun reading about all the different presents that boys and girls from across the city wanted for Christmas.
When Mary’s letter arrived at the radio station, the manager read it carefully. He knew cerebral palsy was a muscle disorder that might confuse some of Mary’s schoolmates, who didn’t understand her disability. He thought it would be good for the people in Fort Wayne to hear about this girl and her unusual wish.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
So the manager called up the local newspaper immediately. The next day, Mary’s letter to Santa made the front page of the newspaper. The story spread quickly. All across the country, newspapers and radio and television stations reported the story of the little girl in Fort Wayne, Indiana, who asked for such a simple yet remarkable Christmas gift -just one day without teasing. Soon the postman became a regular visitor to Mary’s house, with envelopes of all sizes addressed to Mary from all across the nation.
Mary and her family read every single letter filled with friendship and support. Each writer had a special message for Mary. Through the cards and letters from strangers, Mary glimpsed a world full of people who truly cared about each other. Also, teachers and students of her school talked together about how bad teasing could make others feel. Students realized that teasing others for their physical disabilities is wrong. Happily for her, Mary fulfilled her Christmas wish and her schoolmates no longer teased her.

4. What do we know about the author?
A. She worked as a teacher before.
B. She keeps her grandchildren busy.

5. What does paragraph 2 focus on about the kitchen?
A. Its style and age. B. Its location and views.
C. Its design and characteristics. D. Its size and materials.
6. Why did the author and her family move the kitchen?
A. To have bigger room for meals.
B. To obtain better visual effects.
C. To follow the architect’s advice.
D. To offer more family activities.
7. What’s the author’s attitude towards her life now?
A. Anxious. B. Content. C. Sensitive. D. Doubtful.

15 What does Riehl think of the study according to the last paragraph?
A. It is not perfect but inspiring. B. It is good but not necessary.
C. It is not accurate but detailed. D. It is different but not challenging.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
