A painting discovered in a basement, once waved aside as worthless, is now recognized as a genuine Picasso, potentially worth millions.
In the 1950s Luigi Lo Rosso, a pawnbroker on the Italian island of Capri, found the artwork in the basement of an abandoned villa. Convinced it was a treasure, he framed it cheaply and gave it to his wife. She was unimpressed and even washed the artwork alongside another dusty piece as if cleaning a carpet. For decades, the painting hung unnoticed in the family home and later in a restaurant, its true value unrecognized.
Luigi’s son, Andrea, wasn’t born when the painting was found, but a revelation during his college years changed everything. He came across an image in an art history textbook that bore a striking similarity to the family painting. It featured Dora Maar and noted Picasso’s presence on Capri during that era. Returning home, Andrea began a mission to uncover the truth.
Andrea’s persistence lasted decades. By treating the painting as potentially stolen, he registered it with Italy’s patrimony (遗产) police, ensuring in-depth examination. Locked in a Milan police storage room until 2019, the painting was eventually examined by Cinzia Altieri, who found Picasso’s signature in the corner to be true. Art expert Luca Gentile Canal Marcante also confirmed its genuineness, valuing it at $6 million, a figure that could double or triple if the Picasso Foundation in Paris officially recognizes it.
Andrea remains cautious yet hopeful, “I’m happy, but let’s wait to toast,” he said. For now, he continues his father’s dream, aiming for the final seal of approval that could mark the painting’s incredible journey complete.
4. What did Luigi’s wife do to the painting?
A. She tried to figure out its worth. B. She had it framed and displayed it.
C. She cleaned the painting like a carpet. D. She sold it as she thought it had no value.
5. What made Andrea think that the painting might be drawn by Picasso?
A. It showed the image of Dora Maar. B. Picasso was on Capri when it was painted.
C. It looked like the image he saw in a textbook. D. It was well received when hung in a restaurant.
6. Why did Andrea register the painting with the police?
A. To have a careful examination. B. To donate it to the government.
C. To meet the police’s requirements. D. To hide it from other family members.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Andrea?
A. Determined. B. Open-minded. C. Confident. D. Warm-hearted.

More people in the UK are choosing to spend their money on “ethical” shopping, according to the Fairtrade Foundation. Ethical shopping means buying things that do not harm people, animals or the environment when they are produced.
The Fairtrade Foundation is an organization based in the UK that helps farmers and workers in poorer parts of the world to earn enough money to live comfortably. It does this by asking companies that grow products such as bananas or coffee to provide safe working conditions and pay their workers fair wages. The company can then sell its products with a Fairtrade mark so buyers know they are shopping ethically.
Michael Gidney, from the Fairtrade Foundation, said it expects to have made more than £13 million from sales in the UK last year, an increase from £12.8 million in 2022. Last year was a challenging time for the UK economy. The effects of the Covid pandemic, and regional conflicts, pushed up the prices of food and energy, so people had less money to spend. However, the growth in ethical spending shows that many people care about how their spending affects others. “British shoppers do not trade down on their values when times are tough,” Gidney said.
Millions of people in 70 countries benefit from the Fairtrade Foundation’s work, including projects supporting schools, healthcare and clean water. This year the foundation marks 30 years since the Fairtrade programme began. There are also organizations like Rainforest Alliance running ethical shopping plans. Gidney said the growth in ethical shopping proves to big companies that more people want to buy goods that treat workers, animals and the planet well. “We are winning the argument that trade can be sustainable and fair for people and planet,” he said.
8. What can we learn about the Fairtrade Foundation?
A. It sells products with recognized labels.
B. It urges companies to be worker-friendly.
C. It encourages shoppers to buy more products.
D. It sets wage standards for growers on poor land.
9. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. British shoppers aren’t affected by economic challenges.
B. British shoppers buy more regardless of money shortage.
C. British shoppers keep to ethical shopping despite tight finances.
D. British shoppers care more about their spending in economic struggles.
10. Why did Gidney mention the growth in ethical shopping in paragraph 4?
A. To settle the disagreement on trade.
B. To prove the influence of Rainforest Alliance.
C. To draw big firms’ attention to sustainable trade.
D. To expect a greater demand for responsible products.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Shopping to Help Others
B. Trading to Ensure Benefits
C. Why Can Ethical Shopping Save Economy?
D. How Does Fairtrade Foundation Help Global Economy?

However, the growth in ethical spending shows that many people care about how their spending affects others.
根据最后一段“There are also organizations like Rainforest Alliance running ethical shopping plans. Gidney said the growth in ethical shopping proves to big companies that more people want to buy goods that treat workers, animals and the planet well. “We are winning the argument that trade can be sustainable and fair for people and planet,” he said. (吉德尼说,道德购物的增长向大公司证明,越来越多的人想要购买对工人、动物和地球有益的商品。他说:“我们正在赢得这场辩论,即贸易对人类和地球来说是可持续和公平的。”)”可知,Gidney提到道德购物的增长是为了吸引大公司对可持续贸易的关注。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“More people in the UK are choosing to spend their money on “ethical” shopping, according to the Fairtrade Foundation. People thoughtlessly make other people into social media content. If you want to explain this problem, you only draw more attention to something that shouldn’t be happening in the first place.
On a regular basis, a photo or a video will be posted on some social media in which a totally ordinary person doing a totally ordinary thing is removed from all context. And if you look at the numbers on the post, you’ll find that the post has been viewed by a million people.
This is a predictable result of everybody having a camera with them at all times. Who hasn’t wished they had a camera to document the amazing “small person walking huge dog” moment they enjoyed? Curiosity happens, and surprise happens. But if you are purely using someone as a curiosity, why dont’t you say, “Can I take your picture?” Deep down you know the person might not want you to.
Should we walk around with our head down, ignoring the world of amusing strangeness around us? Of course not. We’re far enough into the “practically everybody has a camera” age that we know how it goes, and how we just never know when our small post will become a big deal. To preserve privacy, you can put digital stickers over somebody’s face. You can also offer descriptions in different ways instead of showing photos.
Bear in mind: Standing there with your phone out taking a picture of people who are innocently eating lunch might seem strange to some people, And one of them might also have a phone.
12. What is the predictable result of easy camera access?
A. People become more interested in others.
B. People are more likely to enjoy amusing events.
C. Amazing situations can be recorded without worry.
D. Posts of ordinary people can unexpectedly become hot.
13. Why might people not ask strangers for permission before taking photos?
A. They want natural shots. B. They are afraid of being refused.
C. They intend to surprise strangers. D. They’re unwilling to bother strangers.
14. What does the author suggest we do to protect privacy in online photos?
A. Cover faces with digital stickers. B. Ask for permission before posting.
C. Post photos with rich descriptions. D. Pay no attention to what happens around.
15. What attitude does the author probably hold to taking photos of people eating in public?
A. Objective. B. Unconcerned. C. Favorable. D. Disapproval.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. D

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“But if you are purely using someone as a curiosity, why don’t you say, “Can I take your picture?” Deep down you know the person might not want you to.(但如果你纯粹是出于好奇而利用某人,你为什么不说:“我能给你拍张照吗?”在内心深处,你知道这个人可能不希望你这么做)”可知,人们在拍照前不征求陌生人的同意是因为害怕被拒绝。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“To preserve privacy, you can put digital stickers over somebody’s face.(为了保护隐私,你可以把数字贴纸贴在某人的脸上)”可知,作者建议我们用数码贴纸遮住脸保护网上照片的隐私。故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Bear in mind: Standing there with your phone out taking a picture of people who are innocently eating lunch might seem strange to some people, And one of them might also have a phone.(记住:站在那里拿着你的手机给那些无辜吃午饭的人拍照,对一些人来说可能会很奇怪,而且其中一个可能也有手机)”可知,作者对拍摄人们在公共场合吃饭的照片持反对态度。故选D。

【20题详解】
根据上文“Update your plan.(更新你的计划)”以及后文“One way to ensure you’re keeping your plan updated is to set a quarterly calendar reminder, which will help you address any new developments in your life or career and make changes where necessary.(确保你的计划不断更新的一种方法是每季度设置一个日历提醒,这将帮助你应对生活或职业中的任何新发展,并在必要的地方做出改变)”可知,本段的主旨是更新计划,本句承接上文说明需要更新计划的原因。故G选项“与一年的目标设定不同,制定五年计划的过程永远不会结束”符合语境,故选G。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“You include too many safety schools,” this was the same comment from all my teachers, family, and friends about my list of colleges. “Why not choose more reach schools? It’s harder to get their offer, but I have confidence in you,” my mom said to me, confused. “I’m afraid of being rejected (拒绝) by every university,” I murmured faintly.
As a child, I was always cautious and alert, attempting to minimize every possibility of risk or danger. My early years were characterized by careful preparation and a never-ending search for safety. I can still clearly recall my first day of kindergarten when I tightly gripped my mother’s hand until my knuckles (指关节) turned white. It was impossible to face the overpowering fear of the unknown and entering a room full of strangers. But I overcame them, as I have overcome many fears, by learning to take baby steps toward my goals.
There were new challenges in high school. My biggest fear was public speaking, but I realized that the only way to get over it was to tackle it head-on. There were painful moments in the beginning. My thoughts would race, and my voice would tremble. I encountered sharp objections and “heart-hurting” comments, but I became more assured and accomplished with every opportunity before the class. I discovered how to use my fear as motivation to write better drafts, encounter accidents, and improve my public speaking. Eventually, my English teacher chose me as the host of our school’s Foreign Language Reading Festival at the end of the semester. I distinguished myself by giving a persuasive speech on English reading abilities and won tremendous applause.

A painting discovered in a basement, once waved aside as worthless, is now recognized as a genuine Picasso, potentially worth millions.
In the 1950s, Luigi Lo Rosso, a pawnbroker on the Italian island of Capri, found the artwork in the basement of an abandoned villa.
A To have a careful examination.

D
15 What attitude does the author probably hold to taking photos of people eating in public?
A. Objective. B. Unconcerned. C. Favorable. D. Disapproval.

注意:
1.续写词数应为80左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Creating my school list was a difficult process filled with countless worries and fears, but I kept in mind the lessons I had learned over the years.
