Jane Austen spent the final eight years of her life living in Chawton. Today, her home serves as a public museum. The museum once created an exhibition — “Jane Austen in 41 Objects”. Each object explores a different aspect of Jane Austen’s life and works. It ran from March 10th to December 15th. For years, she’s been helping kids who feel lonely make friends. What she was doing was running the Buddy Bench program. The idea was that anyone at school who was feeling lonely could sit on the “buddy bench.” That let other kids know someone needed a friend. “It’s really helpful to have other people be able to notice you,” Sammie says. The idea quickly caught on. The bench brought kids together. Since then, Sammie has helped communities all over the country set up buddy benches. “It means a lot to me,” she says, “that this is making a difference in people’s lives.” Sammie got the idea for the Buddy Bench program at summer camp in 2017. She thought it would be cool to have a buddy bench in her school, so when she got home, she presented the idea to her principal, her teachers, and her parents. Getting approval for the project was just the first step. “There have been a lot of small challenges, like money,” Sammie says. To reduce costs and be eco-friendly, Sammie decided to make the bench out of recycled material. So she called on her community to gather bottle caps. Word of the project got out, and soon Sammie was getting caps from people in all 50 states. She even got them from people in Germany, the Netherlands, and other countries. In the end, she collected more than 1,200 pounds of bottle caps. A company called GreenTree Plastics was able to upcycle these into three benches. In addition to all the kids her project has helped, Sammie is grateful for how it has changed her. “It just helped me grow in so many different aspects of my life,” she says. Before long, Sammie was helping other schools acquire benches. She has donated more than 200 benches to schools and parks all around the country, and in Mexico and Australia. Her work continues to spread kindness far and wide. Even small acts of kindness can be powerful. “It can make someone’s day and lead to a chain reaction,” she says. “You never know. Just be kind, in general.” 24. What do we know about the Buddy Bench program? A. It helps lonely kids to make friends. B. Only lonely kids can sit on the bench. C. The program brought all the kids together. D. It made Sammie Vance popular among the kids. 25. What is probably not a challenge of the program? A. lacking money B. collecting materials for the bench C. gaining support from her classmates D. getting approval of her school and her parents 26. What can we learn from the passage? A. As we all know, the life skills like cooking and painting are important and should be taught as part of labor education. On June 3, 2020, the Ministry of Education ( MOE) gave a document showing the revised curriculum (修改后的方案) for senior high schools across the country. Labor education includes housework, school labor and community voluntary services and so on. “Labor education must be carried out with the purpose to make the right view of the world, life and values and develop an interest in doing chores,” said Vice-Minister of Education Zheng Fuzhi. According to China Youth Daily, the labor course will take six credits (学分)—the same as foreign language and physics. Voluntary service, as part of labor education, would take two credits. The MOE also asks schools to make sure 40 hours of voluntary service during the full three school years. According to Xinhua, adding labor education was out of care that the country’s young people do too little housework and that they think labor jobs aren’t important. Because of a lot of school pressure, schools pay more attention to the course of education, and parents may think that the chores waste their kids’ time. According to a survey, middle school students in China only spend 12 minutes a day on chores, compared with 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France. However, doing housework does not distract young people. Instead, they are necessary for developing a strong working spirit, according to Julie Lythcott-Haims, the writer of How to Raise an Adult. “The earlier you started, the better…”, he said. 28. After seeing too many examples of adults “passing on mathematical anxiety like a virus,” Bonfert has an important message for math-phobic parents and educators: “We are passing on from generation to generation the fear for mathematics.” Many people hold the view that math is inherently hard, and only people with an inborn mathematical ability can understand it. While well-meaning adults may think they’re encouraging kids by sharing their own math fears, research has shown the opposite. Research has found that the problem is particularly significant for girls, who “are especially affected when a teacher publicly announces math hatred before she picks up the chalk.” Moreover, a study published recently reported that female mathematical achievement was diminished in response to a female teacher’s mathematical anxiety. The effect was correlated: the higher a teacher’s anxiety, the lower the scores.” Parents’ anxiety about math can have a similar effect on kids’ achievement and their attitude toward the subject. Children who received math homework help from mathematically fearful parents showed weaker math achievements than their peers, which in turn resulted in increased math anxiety for the children themselves. New research on math anxiety confirms that these parents unintentionally teach kids to expect that math will be beyond their capabilities. Fortunately, Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist of Barnard College, has found a surprisingly easy way for parents to stop passing on math anxiety and build their children’s math confidence. The most important finding is the importance of normalizing math at home in a way that’s relaxing and playful: from using math-themed books and stories, playing with math games and toys to cooking together. He argues that we need to teach kids that “working on mathematical skills is not unlike practicing a sport. Neither can be learned by watching others perform the activity and both require encouragement and effort. You do not need an inborn mathematical ability in order to solve mathematical problems. Rather, what is required is perseverance, a willingness to take risks and feeling safe to make mistakes. 32. Why do some people share their math fear with kids? A. To expect kids to learn from their mistake. B. To prove only geniuses can learn it well. C. To give encouragement to their kids. D. To stress the importance of genetic factors. 33. What does the underlined word “diminished” mean? A. Decreased. B. Measured. C. Improved. D. Influenced. 34. What can be learned from the last paragraph? A. Normalizing maths at home is relaxing and full of fun. B. Having an inborn math ability is essential to children. C. Developing mathematical skills differs from doing a sport. D. Encouragement and efforts help yield math learning success. 35. What’s the main idea of the text? A. Math-phobic adults are to blame for math failure. B. Math anxiety is nothing to be afraid of at all. C. Parents and teachers pass on math fear to kids. D. Risks and mistakes are what success takes. 【答案】32. C 33. A 34. D 35. 根据第二段中“While well-meaning adults may think they’re encouraging kids by sharing their own math fears, research has shown the opposite.(虽然善意的成年人可能认为,他们分享自己对数学的恐惧是在鼓励孩子,但研究表明,事实恰恰相反)”可知,有些人会和孩子们分享他们对数学的恐惧是为了鼓励他们的孩子。故选C。 【33题详解】 词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“a study published recently reported that female mathematical achievement was”以及后文“in response to a female teacher’s mathematical anxiety. The effect was correlated: the higher a teacher’s anxiety, the lower the scores.”可知,这种影响是相关的:老师越焦虑,分数就越低,所以可以得知最近发表的一项研究报告称,女教师的数学焦虑会降低女性的数学成绩。故画线词意思是“降低”。A. Decreased.减少,降低;B. Measured.测量;C. Improved.改善;D. Influenced.影响。故选A。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Neither can be learned by watching others perform the activity and both require encouragement and effort.(这两种方法都不能通过观看别人的表演来学习,都需要鼓励和努力)”可知,鼓励和努力有助于数学学习的成功。故选D。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段中“After seeing too many examples of adults “passing on mathematical anxiety like a virus,” Bonfert has an important message for math-phobic parents and educators: “We are passing on from generation to generation the fear for mathematics.”(在看到太多成年人“将数学焦虑像病毒一样传播”的例子后,邦弗特向患有数学恐惧症的父母和教育者传达了一条重要信息:“我们正在将对数学的恐惧一代一代地传递下去。”)”以及最后一段中“Fortunately, Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist of Barnard College, has found a surprisingly easy way for parents to stop passing on math anxiety and build their children’s math confidence.(幸运的是,巴纳德学院的认知科学家Sian Beilock发现了一种非常简单的方法,可以让父母停止传递数学焦虑,并帮助孩子建立数学自信)”结合文章主要说明了虽然善意的成年人可能认为,他们分享自己对数学的恐惧是在鼓励孩子,但研究表明,事实恰恰相反。 How to realize your potential I've always wanted to reach my full potential and abilities. I want to tell you about four changes I made—and you can make—to reach your highest potential: 1. Write down your goals. You set these goals. Don't let anybody else tell you what your goals should be. Think of success like breathing air; your last breath is important, but it's your next breath that's important. Goals keep you focused on what's next. ___36___ 2. Choose things just out of reach. Don't just think about what is "realistic". The problem with realistic thinking is that it's usually based on what others think is possible. ___37___ Whenever you start a task with a mind toward the potential outcome, you will limit the actions required to realize that goal. 3. ___38___ Never do anything normal. Take massive action until one day it is a habit for you. People will ask you: "Why are you still out this late? What are you doing calling on a Saturday? You never quit, do you?" ___39___ Big goals require big actions. Reaching your full potential requires massive actions. 4. Stay persistent(坚持). How do you get a nail in a wall? You hit it over and over again. ___40___ The ability to persist on your path is a secret common to those who make it. Reaching your potential requires you to be persistent. A. Take massive action. B. And even "What are you on?" C. Rome wasn't built in a day. D. They don't know your potential. E. Don't let anyone else judge your success. F. And writing them down keeps you on track. G. How much success have you got in your life? 【答案】36. F 37. D 38. A 39. B 40. She collected the bottle caps from all over the country. B. The benches were made to be eco-friendly and low-cost. C. A company upcycled the caps into three benches for free. D. She donated benches to schools and parks all around the country. 27. What’s the influence the project has on Sammie? A. It helped her grow in many respects. B. She became popular among the students. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to realize your potential I've always wanted to reach my full potential and abilities. G.
