We often see cars running on their own without a human driver in science fiction movies. But in China, this is becoming real, reported China Daily.
Self-driving cars first drew wide attention in the country in 2015. That year, Volvo, a carmaker from Sweden, tested such cars in Beijing. Later, Chinese businesses like Baidu started making self-driving cars, too.
Right now, China is on its way to become the world’s largest market for self-driving cars. By 2040, China will have 12 million robot taxis, followed by the US with around 7 million, according to China Daily.
However, some people are worried about the safety of the technology. In Wuhan, Hubei province, Baidu’s self-driving cars have had some small accidents. Once, one such car stopped in front of a plastic bag and caused a traffic jam (交通拥堵). Another time, two cars slowed down to face each other, and did not know what to do next.
These situations might seem funny but dangerous. There may be some challenges caused by self-driving cars. If a robot car has a big accident, it can’t decide what to do next on its own and has to wait for someone to come and help. Also, it’s not clear who should be responsible (负有责任的) when something goes wrong-the company that owns the robot car, the person who designed it, or both.
Luckily, in December 2023, the government made a set of new rules to improve the safety of self-driving cars. More rules will come in the future.
9. When did Volvo start testing self-driving cars in Beijing?
A. In 2010. B. In 2015. C. In 2020. D. In 2021.
10. Which country is expected to have the biggest market for self-driving cars by 2040?
A. Sweden. B. China. C. The US. D. The UK.
11. What do the examples in Paragraph 4 tell us about self-driving cars?
A. They help cut down traffic jams. B. They are smart and safe.
C They are slower than other cars. D. They may cause some safety problems.
12. What does the underlined word challenges probably mean?
A. differences. B. changes. C. difficulties. D. mistakes.
