Verena Mohaupt and a handful of colleagues were trapped on floating sea ice while the bear gazed at them, smelling the air -- a dangerous sign. As a colleague fired into the sky as a warning shot, Mohaupt radioed their research ship a few kilometers away, whose helicopter luckily arrived quickly and Mohaupt didn’t have to use the gun that was hanging over her shoulder.
Keeping a lookout for bears was a regular duty for Mohaupt, the logistics coordinator (后勤协调员) for a year-long mission known as MOSAiC----the largest Arctic research exploration in history. The project, consisting of roughly 300 people, including scientists and coordinators, has collected massive measurements that will help better forecast how warming will transform the globe in the coming decades. For months, the exploration operated in constant darkness while polar bears wandered nearby, storms rocked the ship and the ice shifted and cracked.
Tasked with the security of the mission, Mohaupt designed an extensive training course for the participants in which they learnt how to avoid the danger, like storm-rocking and ice-cracking. They jumped into a Norwegian channel in their survival suits and climbed out of the freezing waters using only their ice picks. They learnt how to escape from a crashed helicopter. And they discussed the psychological effects of being far from home. Mohaupt brought knitting equipment, a yoga mat and an accordion(手风琴) for her own mental health----although having been prepared for the isolation.
Mohaupt didn’t expect a career in polar regions. However, all the scientists agreed that without her, the project could not have achieved so much. “She was there to make sure that we were protected,” said one of them. “Mohaupt is certainly the champion in the field.”
24. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By making a list of facts. B. By presenting arguments.
C. By describing a scene. D. By making a comparison.
25. What do we know about MOSAiC?
A. It is the largest ever research exploration. B. It is made up of about 300 scientists.
C. Its working conditions are quite tough. D. Its duty is to keep a lookout for bears.
26. Which of the following best describes Mohaupt?
A. Ambitious and courageous. B. Passionate and humorous.
C. Honest and generous. D. Professional and responsible.
27. What is the attitude of the scientist towards Mohaupt?
A. Doubtful. B. Appreciative. C. Dissatisfied. D. Jealous.

According to the statistics shared by UNESCO, at least 43% of the total languages being spoken across the world are in danger of extinction. Moreover, many languages around the world have less than 1,000 speakers now. Linguists and researchers believe that by the end of the century, at least half of the world’ s languages will have died.
Language activists and people who speak these endangered languages spare no effort to fight back. Scientists believe that digitalization might be our only hope to preserve some of these quickly disappearing languages in the online world.
For example, Oxford University Press launched Oxford Global Languages a few years ago, advocating “digitally underrepresented (代表性不足的)” languages. They are focused on promoting languages that might have close to a million speakers worldwide, but have little or no online presence. Therefore, they have been creating digital dictionaries as a fundamental (基础的) building block to help preserve them.
There have been countless other projects like this with the same aim. Another is the Rosetta Project, which aims to create a handheld digital library that will carry more than 1,500 languages. It will be appropriately sized to fit nicely into our hands, and will come with around 13,000 pages of information. Projects like these have as their main goals to ensure the preservation of local languages long after their speakers have died.
Countless languages will continue to perish as the remaining speakers die. Of course we cannot only rely on digitization to deal with worldwide languages loss. However, it is a step in the right direction. These digital tools offer endangered languages many opportunities to bounce back and survive.
28. What does the data in Paragraph 1 mainly show?
A. Many languages are endangered.
B. Culture determines language development.
C. Human activity has an influence on languages.
D. Many linguists attempt to protect threatened languages.
29. What does Oxford Global Languages try to do?
A. Promote online courses of local languages.
B. Publish paper dictionaries of global languages.
C. Increase dying language speakers to a million.
D. Make certain languages available in digital form.
30. What can we learn about the digital library to be created by the Rosetta Project?
A. It is portable but very expensive.
B. It is sponsored by Oxford University Press.
C. It provides protection for linguistic diversity.
D. It contains automatically updated information.
31. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “perish” in the last paragraph?
A. be enriched. B. be lost. C. be acquired. D. be invented.
D
This week, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an AI tool built to create music. The tool, called MusicLM, is not the first AI music tool to be launched. But the examples Google provided demonstrate musical creative ability based on a limited set of descriptive words.
Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the generated music came from just one-or-two-word descriptions, such as “jazz”, “rock” or “techno (高科技舞曲)”. The tool also created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences.
In one example, Google researchers included these instructions to MusicLM, “It is a soundtrack of a game. It is fast-paced and upbeat, with a catchy electric guitar riff (反复乐节). The music is repetitive and easy to remember, but with unexpected sounds...” In the resulting recording, the music seemed to keep very close to the description. The team said the more detailed the description was, the better the system could attempt to produce it.
The MusicLM model operates similarly to the machine-learning systems used by ChatGPT. ChatGPT and MusicLM both require powerful computers to operate complicated machine-learning models. The San Francisco-based company OpenAI launched ChatGPT late last year. ChatGPT has recently received a lot of attention because of its ability to generate complex writings and other content from just a simple description in natural languages. Such tools can produce human-like results because they are trained on huge amounts of data. Many different materials are fed into the systems to permit them to learn complex skills to create realistic works.
However, the MusicLM researchers said there were some risks linked to the new tool. One of the biggest issues the researchers identified was biases (偏好) present in the training data. A bias might be including too much of one side and not enough of the other. The researchers said this raised a question about appropriateness for music generation for cultures underrepresented in the training data.
32. What can we learn about MusicLM?
A. It is the first AI music tool to be launched.
B. It requires detailed descriptions of full sentences.
C. It creates music based on simple descriptive words.
D. It generates complex writings from a simple description.
33. What is the similarity between ChatGPT and MusicLM?
A. They can take the place of musicians. B. They have gained commercial success.
C. They don’t have any practical use in life. D. They are based on huge amounts of data.
34. Which of the following is an issue of the MusicLM model?
A. Being difficult for some people to use. B. Requiring too much training data.
C. Creating music with strong biases. D. Producing music works with no creativity.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. The Future of Humans with AI B. A New AI Tool to Make Music
C. Music Created by Some AI Tools D. AI and Its Function in Culture Development

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a perfect day for the beach. My brother and I were meeting our friends on the northeast side of the island, a beach we seldom visited due to the strong currents.
Dad dropped us off an hour before everyone was to arrive. I watched my brother take off into the blue ocean. He was a body surfing enthusiast. I decided not to wait for our friends either because the water began to rise, forming a perfect wave.
I held my breath and dove through the wave. I was under the surf, with my eyes wide open, the water like silk flowing over my body. It was cold, like liquid ice waking up my senses. I pulled my body to the surface, allowing fresh air to fill my lungs, and then went back under. I pretended to be a fish, a dolphin, anything that lived under the sea.
After a while, I thought it might be a good idea to head back in and see if our friends had arrived. I looked toward the beach and realized I had gone farther out than I should have. I was the only one this far out.
I was not too worried though. I was a pretty good swimmer. But, as I tried to swim in, I realized I was making no progress. After what felt like a long while, my body began to feel heavy, and my arms grew tired. However hard I tried to swim, I was not moving any closer to the beach. Worn out, terrified and desperate, I cried for help loudly.

I began to think I might drown out there. The realization hit me like a punch to the gut一记重击. Panic started to set in as I continued to struggle against the merciless current. My limbs felt like lead, and the once dynamic cold water now seemed to be my enemy, chilling me to the bone. I could see the distant figures on the shore, but my cries for help were swallowed by the sound of the crashing waves. In that moment, I felt utterly alone, my connection to the world slipping away with each weakening stroke.
A moment later, I regained my consciousness. I found myself on the beach, the sun beating down on my face, and the sound of my brother's voice in my ear. He had seen my struggle and, risking his own safety, had swum out to save me. My friends had joined in, forming a human chain to pull us both to safety. Exhausted but grateful, I looked around at the concerned faces, realizing how lucky I was to have such brave and caring people in my life. The experience was an obvious reminder of the power of the sea and the importance of never underestimating it. It was also a testament to the bond of friendship and family, which had pulled me back from the edge of death.

W: You’re not here for the interview, are you?
M: l am, indeed.
W: Ha-ha, so maybe we shouldn’t be talking to each other, then.
M: I don’t think it’s likely to make much difference. When is your appointment?
W: Let me see... in exactly 10 minutes.
M: Oh, you’re before me. Mine will begin in half an hour.
W: Looks like you got here too early.
M: Well, l didn’t want to leave anything to chance. I could have been stuck in traffic or something like that. By the way, what made you apply for the job?
W: I like the idea of working in the city center. There are some good shops around here.
M: Yes, but parking the car might be expensive.
W: well, I’ll be coming on the subway if I get the job, so that won’t matter.
M: What’s that sound?
W: Oh, it’s my phone. Excuse me, I’ll have to take this call.
