A 99-year-old Australian swimmer appears to have broken a world record for his age group in the 50 m freestyle. The likely new world record holder, George Corones, clocked 56.12 seconds at an official event in Queensland — a new benchmark (基准) for the 100-104 age group. He broke the old record of 1’ 31” 19, which was set by British swimmer John Harrison in 2014, by 35 seconds. It will now be recognized by the sport’s governing body.
Corones, who was upset for Harrison’s record because he would turn 100 in April, said he was “quite pleased” and “over the world” by the result. He sad he had been flooded by the “cheering” crowd on the Gold Coast on Wednesday. The event, in which he was the only new member, had been specially staged for him to challenge the record.
Corones was a good swimmer in his youth but only began to learn swimming again at the age of 80. He gave it up at the beginning of the World War Ⅱ, and he didn’t think he would have a swim of any description until he retired (退休) . Then he started swimming again for exercise.
Racing undeniably (不可否认的) challenged him physically, but it was manageable with preparation. On average he swims three times a week, and also fits in gyms. “At this age it takes a while to get going... you get tired much more easily. But if you do it properly, the rewards (回报) are huge,” he said.
Corones will challenge the 100m freestyle record on Saturday night, believing he can beat the present mark of 03’ 23” 10, which was also set by Harrison.
“I’m not a young man by any means, but I am greatly looking forward to it and confident I can do it very well,” he said.

5. How did Corones feel about his record?
A. Amazed. B. Honourable. C. Excited. D. Tired.

A. In his childhood. B. At the age of 80.
C. During the World War Ⅱ. D. At the age of up to 100.
7. What can we conclude from the text?
A. It’s never too late to learn.
B. Do well and have well.
C. He who laughs last laughs best.
D. Everything’s hard in the beginning.

Everybody hates rats. But in the earthquake capitals of the world — Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey — rats will soon be man’s new best friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs, why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat .
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. when this happens, the rat’ brain gives a signal (信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’ s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell university, New York, says,“ Robots, noses don’ t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity!
The “rat project ” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’ t get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
8. Why will rats become popular in the world earthquake capitals?
A. They can get into small spaces.
B. They can take the place of man’s rescue jobs.
C They can find food for survivors trapped in buildings.
D. They can get the place of survivors trapped in buildings.
9. How can rescuers judge a person who is alive?
A. By the noise made by the rat.
B. By the rat’s unusual behaviour.
C. By the signal sent by the radio on the rat.
D. By the smell given off by the person trapped.
10. What do we know from the text?
A. People are happy to see a rat in a building.
B. The “rat project” has been completed already.
C. People still use dogs and robots in rescue work.
D. Rats have replaced dogs in searching for people.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Rules in the Earthquake
B. The Role Rats will play in the Earthquake
C. Ways of Rescuing people
D. The Reason for not using Dogs
D
A narcissist is a person suffering from a particular mental (精神的) disorder that is characterized by a sense of self-importance without pity for other people, and a continuous need for attention and admiration.
There are two types of narcissists. Weak narcissism is one type that is pronounced by unsafe feelings, low self-respect (自尊) and sensitivity to criticism (批评). This kind of narcissism makes people easier to be refused and makes it hard for them to build long-lasting relationships. They might also have trouble with stress and get easily unknown what to do.
When someone shows a mouth-filling sense of self-importance in an unbelievable visible and showy manner, they are considered strong narcissists. Moreover, they often give up relationships that would be beneficial (有利的) to them in other ways in order to keep their inflated (膨胀的) feeling of self-worth.
Everyone puts themselves or their needs first to some degree, but narcissists do so far more often. People who deal with narcissists may find this to be confusing and hazardous.
Narcissistic people react strongly to even the smallest refusal. They will put the responsibility on others rather than own up to their own errors. Living with a narcissistic personality might make you feel as though you are being lied to, or used as a chess piece too often. They are ready to say or do everything to get what they want or what they believe they should get.
Narcissists are self-centred and too concerned with their personal importance. They often overstate their success and importance in order to hide their discomfort and weak sense of identity. Narcissists show little consideration for the needs and feelings of others. If it doesn’t help them in some manner, they would not be sorry for harming someone else.
Dealing with narcissists in life can be challenging, but there are many things that help you in managing them effectively.
12. Who may be a weak narcissist according to the text?
A. The person that seldom puts himself/herself first.
B. The person that can’t deal with pressure.
C. The person that shows off himself/herself a lot.
D. The person that has a strong sense of self-importance.
13. What does the underlined word “ hazardous” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Helpful. B. Unique. C. Funny. D. Harmful.
14. What can be known about narcissistic people?
A. They can take up responsibilities actively.
B. They have a strong will to achieve goals.
C. They will feel sorry for harming others.
D. They are sensitive (敏感的) to others’ refusal.
15. What is the text probably continued with?
A. The challenges doctors meet in management.
B. The strategies to change narcissists.
C. How to treat narcissists successfully.
D. How to deal with narcissists in life.

One cool Autumn day, as Mei-Ling was working in her garden, she noticed a young traveller Wei sitting by the roadside looking very tired. Without hesitation (犹豫), Mei-Ling invited Wei into her house and offered him food and water. Grateful beyond words, Wei shared stories of his travels and the difficulties he had faced along the way.
As days turned into weeks. Wei helped Mei-Ling around the house. In return, Mei-Ling shared her wisdom with Wei, teaching him about the importance of compassion (同情) and gratitude (感恩). They became good friends with each passing day. And Wei found himself deeply influenced by Mei-Ling’s simple yet meaningful way of life.
One evening, under the glow of the harvest moon, Wei asked Mei-Ling a question that had been weighing on his mind. “Mci-Ling,” he began hesitantly, “what makes someone truly beautiful?” Mei-Ling smiled knowingly and looked at the garden they had taken care of together.
“True beauty,” Mei-Ling replied softly, “is not found in outward appearances or material wealth. It is in the kindness we show to others, the love we share with those around us, and the peace we bring to our hearts.” Wei nodded thoughtfully.
Wei eventually said goodbye to Mei-Ling, setting off on a new journey with a heart full of gratitude and a soul enriched by Mei-Ling’s teachings. A 99-year-old Australian swimmer appears to have broken a world record for his age group in the 50 m freestyle. The likely new world record holder, George Corones, clocked 56.12 seconds at an official event in Queensland — a new benchmark (基准) for the 100-104 age group.

C The person that shows off himself/herself a lot.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. D

For those who live within less than an hour’s travelling distance from their parents, a weekly get together around the dinner table is really not too much to ask. ____17____ Take the chance to chat about daily happenings, and repay just a little of the time they gladly spent on you.
Her kindness inspired a spirit of unity among the villagers, who rebuilt their homes stronger than before. The villagers, grateful for her years of selfless service, gathered to express their appreciation. They brought gifts of fruits and vegetables from their harvests, expressing gratitude for Mei-Ling’s kindness. However, Mei-Ling just smiled and refused, saying, “I really don’t need these. please pass them on to those still in hunger.”
As Mei-Ling grew older, her health got worse, yet her spirit remained as ever. she often said, “I’m just an old woman. I did little things as possible as I could, trying to make this world a little warmer.” she knew that her legacy would live on in the hearts of those she had touched. And so, in that quiet village, Mei-Ling’s legacy continued to shine brightly — a beacon of true beauty that reminded everyone that kindness, compassion, and love were the most precious treasures of all.
