Passage 4
(23-24高一下·重庆荣昌·期中)In one of my classes today we discussed the question of how our lives would be without a mobile phone. I actually felt quite sad to hear how some kids cannot 1 without their phones these days. 2 , I think nowadays we are 3 by our technology to keep up. So let’s see some of the points that 4 in the discussion and see if our generation really is addicted to electronic connections rather than true communication.
It is true that everything works at a fast pace these days. For example, you can contact someone who lives on the other side of the world within 5 . This is great if you think about how connected we can stay to the 6 who are far away from us. However, on the contrary, can we be too connected to the people who are 7 to us? An argument arose about the 8 that it is easier to message someone from your sofa than to meet them 9 and talk. Social skills are important to have and if you are not going to put effort into real-life 10 , then you are not going to progress in this ability.
Another point was that phones are very handy for 11 something that you are wondering about. For example, if you don’t know a word in another language, you can quickly and simply use an on-line translator to help you out. This can be very 12 in many situations, but it can also make a person dependent on the 13 to help with anything.
All in all, this question is very interesting to 14 for oneself as we become day by day more dependent on technology. We should realize how much we really need to be connected by our phones while considering the 15 and damages it can cause us.

Passage 13
(23-24高一下·重庆·期中)Too much screen time is something we usually associate with children. We think of little kids watching hours of CoComelon on iPads, or teens who would rather be 1 in video games or YouTube than talk about their day.
But there is another group of people that are having trouble with 2 their devices: baby boomers, who were born after the Second World War. Smartphones came into their lives 3 , but they were quickly won over. Now some of their children say they are addicted, 4 at their screens constantly, even when they should be paying 5 to their own grandchildren. In general, two-thirds of boomers own a smartphone and about 6 in 10 are 6 social media, according to a 2019 Pew Research Center survey.
We asked more than 100 millennials (千禧一代) and Gen Xers about their parents’ phone habits. Around half said their parents are good at not being on their phones too much — normally 7 they are not good at the tech or are still using flip phones. The rest, however, are absorbed in their 8 . They are playing Words with Friends, Candy Crush and card games, often with the volume turned 9 . They are looking at the news, checking sports scores, scrolling Facebook and texting.
The phone is also a tool for grandparents to 10 with people in their lives. Many people we spoke to said their parents enjoy reading things out loud from their phones, telling families or anyone 11 about the weather, the headlines or viral stories that may or may not be true.
Everyone is 12 with looking at their phones too much. It is 13 that grandparents picked up some of their habits from their children and grandchildren. “The somewhat embarrassing reality is that they’re much better at not being 14 by their devices than my partner and I are,” says Lucas Mitchell, a dad of two from Vancouver. His parents use their iPhone and iPad 15 but are good at focusing on the family.

In general, two-thirds of boomers own a smartphone and about 6 in 10 are 6 social media, according to a 2019 Pew Research Center survey.
We asked more than 100 millennials (千禧一代) and Gen Xers about their parents’ phone habits.
