Food waste is a big problem around the world. While some people throw away unwanted food, lots of people in other parts of the world face food shortages(短缺).
Because of this problem, many countries in the world like Germany and France have set up food banks. People and grocery stores(杂货店)who have enough food can give extra food to them, then they can give the food to those in need. Shanghai Oasis opened China’s first food bank in 2015. In five years, it saved seven million tons of food and helped 760,000 people.
Many fruits and vegetables go to waste because they look ugly. For example, about 25 to 30 percent of carrots don’t make it to the store because of their looks. So try to buy ugly food next time, since it is just as good as “normal” food.
Many Chinese restaurants are telling people to order dishes by using the “N-1” formula. “N” stands for the number of people in your group. So if you’re in a group of six people, you should order five dishes. It is a shame to waste food. But everyone can do something to make a difference.

For more than 30 years, Zhu Yanjun, 50, had been a migrant worker (农民工) in different cities like many others from rural (农村的) areas. But what made him different was his strong love for reading poetry (诗) and books. In early February, Zhu made headlines by winning a silver medal in the yearly Chinese Poetry Competition hosted by China Central Television.
Born in a village in Jingning county, Gansu province, Zhu only had a middle school education. His love for reading was inspired by his Chinese language teacher who has published many articles in magazines. “I also wanted to publish stories, so I started to read, and borrowed books from friends and classmates, “he told China Daily.
He worked at different construction sites in more than 10 cities. Whenever he arrives in a city, he first visits the bookstores and libraries there. He would take a notebook with him in order to write down paragraphs from the books and recite (背诵) them.
He started reading poems from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and poems written by Chairman MaoZedong because he found them rhythmic and easy to remember. Over the years, he has read thousands of poems and can recite more than 1,000 of them.
Reading poetry helps Zhu stay calm and he never complains about hard work. “Whenever I face any difficulty, I think of Chairman Mao’s quotation (语录): ‘Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it’, ”he told China Daily.

The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plates as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I don’t want to, because it is considered bad manners in the West to leave one’s food on the plate. I have already noticed that when a Chinese sits at an American’s dinner party, he very often refuses the offer of food or drink though he is in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in China, but it is not in the West at all.
In the United States, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct (直接的) way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No, thanks.” When an American dislikes the beer served by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I’ll take some diet Coca-Cola if you have it.” That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States, you had better remember the famous saying: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

69. When an American wants something to eat or drink at a dinner, he will ________.
A. ask for it through others B. refuse the offer
C. ask for it directly D. express himself indirectly
70. “in Rome, do as the Romans do” means “________”.
A. When you got to Rome, you should act as the Romans do
B. When you stay in Rome, you should do as the Romans do

A big sandstorm hit northern China in March. It covered many cities with thick clouds of yellow dust (尘土).
The storm, which came from Mongolia, was the largest sandstorm in China in the past 10 years. Many flights and classes were canceled because the visibility (能见度)was lower than 500 meters.
The storm was the result of warm and dry weather in the area, together with the strong winds from Mongolia. “There has been little rainfall so far this spring and the temperature is rising. So now it is a worrying time for sandstorms.” said an expert from Beijing.
In recent years, sandstorms haven’t been as common in northern China as before. The land with desertification (沙漠化) has been falling by 7,585 km a year in China, and the area of sandy land has been decreasing by 1,284 km a year. This is thanks to China’s Three-North Shelter Forest Program (TNSFP 三北防护林工程) which started in the 1970s. Millions of trees have been planted in northern China to prevent sandstorms and protect the environment.
Besides, China has a color-graded weather warning system for sandstorms, with red meaning the most serious, followed by orange and yellow. Therefore, people would have time to get prepared for the sandstorm.
76. What caused the sandstorm from Mongolia?
A. Cold, wet weather and the strong winds. B. Cold, dry weather and the strong winds.
C. Warm, dry weather and the strong winds. D. Warm, wet weather and the strong winds.

79. If the visibility in your city is 700 meters, what color will the warning be?
A. Red. B. Orange. C. Pink. D. Yellow.
80. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. Sandstorms have never changed.
B. The weather is getting worse and worse.
C. Sandstorms is as common as in China as before.

Long long ago, in China, there were two young men called Yang Shi and You Zuo. One day, they went to visit their teacher Cheng Yi to ask for guidance. However, when they arrived, they found their teacher was sleeping.
Not wanting to disturb him, the two students decided to wait outside quietly until he woke up. The weather turned cold and it started snowing heavily. Despite the harsh conditions, they stood still, showing great respect for their teacher.
Finally, when Mr. Cheng awoke, he noticed that the snow had accumulated thickly on the ground. This story shows how much respect students showed to their teachers in ancient China, which is something I think we should all learn from.
