With the development of society, the choice of food and drinks for children is more diversified(多样化) than ever before. However, every coin has two sides. Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the statistics. I feel there are a number of reasons for this.
Some people blame(责怪) the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants then probably children would buy less take-away food.
There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree to this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives.
There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime(消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports.
The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as guiding them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.
1. What is suggested by the author to deal with “overweight”?
A. Blaming the shops selling unhealthy and fatty foods.
B. Asking young children to walk to school every day.
C. Living an active life and removing bad eating habits.
D. Not watching TV or playing computer games after school.
2. Which of the following shows the structure of the whole text?
3. The author writes the passage to ______________.
A. show people a social problem
B. provide facts for government
C. advise solutions(解决办法)to a problem
D. compare(对比) opinions with people

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, the IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often do less well on exams in the hot months of the year(July and August)
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃people become stronger.
Low air pressure may make people forgetful, people leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. People feel best at a temperature ofbout18℃
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful or unhappy today? It may because of the weather.
4._______can have a bad effect on health.
A. Good weather B High intelligence C Warm weather D. Hot and wet weather
5. People may have more intelligence when_____comes.
A rain B.low air pressure C very hot weather D a strong wind
6. In the Northeast and the Middle West, people have more heart trouble in________.
A.March B. June C. October D. December
7.People are often _______ in a low pressure environment.
A.angry B.tired C. sad D.forgetful

The death of Steve Jobs provides a chance to take some lessons from his amazing life. Steve
Jobs had a passion(激情)for education. He may be gone, but we still have a chance to learn from his courage and innovation(革新).
Making Mistakes
①I think that the main reason why we can't find proper ways to improve the education system that no longer serves us well is simply fear- fear of failure, fear of getting it wrong. Teachers fear that innovation could endanger their jobs. Steve had the attitude we heed in education right now. "Sometimes when you create something, you make mistakes. It is best to admit (承认)them and get on with improving your other innovations." That's the kind of spirit we need to have.
Motivation(积极性)Matters
We've concentrated(专注于)so much on results that we don't always reward good motivations. But these things are very important. In our schools, we've cared so much about best results that we've lost creativity. We don't reward students for their hard work, and we punish failure. As a result, we lost imagination and found no motivation to try something that has a chance of ending in failure.
What Defines(定义)Failure?
②The company that Steve Jobs started in 1985 after being forced out of Apple shows us how technology could influence educational innovation. In 1985 he started NeXT. The company was providing computers for educational purposes. NeXT wasn't really financially(在财政方面)successful. But it may have been ahead of its time. Today, we see what the technology brings into the classroom.
Changing Our Model
The company sold around 50,000 computers. But that would be missing the point. It was a NeXT cube workstation that encouraged the first web server. It helped in the development of early Internet technology. Truly, Steve Jobs has taught us that results are not the most important things in life.
8.The article tells us making mistakes .
A. is always something very bad
B. will help us become better people
C. is a part of making something new
D. will keep us from reaching our dreams
9.We may lose our creativity and imagination if we .
A. make a lot of mistakes
B. fail to have a right model
C. can't be financially successful
D. concentrate too much on results
10.Steve Jobs might agree that .
A. a good motivation can lead to a successful result
B. we shouldn't be afraid of failure and it can lead to success
C. making money is the only way to judge success
D. having a passion is the most important thing for success
11.According to the article, which word can best describe Steve Jobs spirit?
A. Passion. B. Motivation
C. Innovation D. Creativity
D
Mark Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media always praise (表扬) him. But when you actually take the time to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, you find that his work is more wonderful than you could ever imagine.
The novel describes a young boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and searches for treasure. Twain’s idea of childhood is magical – a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure.
More importantly, through the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain cleverly makes fun of US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses scenes of Tom there to mock religion and its old traditions.
Twain’s writing is full of these kinds of critical (批判的) points about culture and politics. That’s why he is so loved in the US – he wasn’t afraid to state his opinions, and he did so clearly.
He also believed strongly in women’s right to vote in elections and gave a famous speech on the subject, called “Votes for Women”, in 1901.
“Tom was a great hero once more – the pet of the old, the envy of the young,” Twain writes in Tom Sawyer. But he could just as well be describing himself.
12. According to the writer, after reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, you are likely to think _______.
A. it’s not worth all the praise B. it’s as wonderful as you imagined
C. it’s better to read it with teachers D. it’s even better than you imagined
13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. A brief description of the novel.
B. Where Twain’s idea of childhood comes from.
C. How naughty and adventurous Tom Sawyer is.
D. What makes Tom Sawyer’s adventures so wonderful.
14. What does the underlined word “mock” mean?
A. make changes to B. make fun of
C. give reasons for D. give examples of
15. Why is Twain so loved in the US according to the article?
A. He supported women’s right to vote.
B. He wrote bad things about US wars abroad.
C. He criticized American culture and society clearly and cleverly.
D. He showed readers a magical childhood that everyone would love.
