I was first attracted by climbing in 2016 when, as a reporter, I was arranged to interview some professional mountaineers. Over the several days I spent with them, I began to understand the sense of freedom that mountaineering brings. Then about three years later, I gave up my job and joined the British Top Expedition. We trained at a local gym, which was the easy part. However, I found there were lots of things that frightened me about Mount Everest. That was one of the most difficult things for climbing. Anyway, I’ve managed to climb the mountain twice. The first time I went, as a reporter, I carried my camera all the way, but it wasn’t necessary. You can even forget showers on a mountain as well. On my second trip, I didn’t even take my toothbrush. But to get water, I had to melt snow, using the fuel that I brought with me. I’ve never reached the top of the mountain yet, but I’m not thinking of giving up. Instead, I’m planning.

Wildlife photographer Sam Turley and his wife Vera found a two-week-old blesbok (南非白面大羚羊) — whom they named Meme — on her own. She was spotted wandering around on her own after her mother passed away.
The pair took Meme in and raised the animal themselves for seven months before releasing her back out into the wild. Neither of them had ever raised a blesbok before. So it required a huge amount of patience and compassion to keep her fit and healthy but it deserved the effort. Meme would follow Vera wherever she went and sometimes the couple would have a blesbok, a dog and a cat all walking together. In the right areas, blesbok are a really common antelope to see and they are therefore often overlooked and under-appreciated. It was a privilege to be let into blesbok’s secret world and they learned more about blesbok than they thought was ever possible.
After releasing Meme back out into the wild, the couple were convinced they would never see her again, until several months later when they were driving around a reserve and happened to come across a herd of blesbok.
Vera called out Meme’s name in the hope of finding Meme. Blesbok all look very similar to one another, which makes it very difficult to distinguish individuals. When Vera started to talk, the herd raised their heads and looked over. Vera continued to call Meme and as all the other blesbok lost interest, one individual held her gaze and ran straight up to her.
After rescuing the lonely animal, Sam and Vera found it extremely emotional to have to release her back out into the wild to fend for herself — even though they knew it was the right thing to do. But after having such a strong bond with an animal, it was really difficult to see her go. They had put so much time, effort and energy into raising her but to see her walking in a herd of blesbok made it all worthwhile.
24. What happened to Meme when she was spotted?
A. She became an orphan. B. She was lost in the forest.
C. She was hunted by a couple. D. She was abandoned by her mother.
25. What was Meme’s life with the couple like?
A. She was rare to be seen outside. B. She was hard to be artificially fed.
C. She fitted in well with the whole family. D. She was under-appreciated in the family.
26. Which word can best replace the underlined word “fend” in Paragraph 5?
A. Care. B. Look. C. Search. D. Hunt.
27. Which of the following can best describe the act of rescuing the blesbok?
A. Unsatisfactory. B. Heartbreaking.
C. Effortless. D. Rewarding.
A 25. C 26. A 27. D
根据第一段“Wildlife photographer Sam Turley and his wife Vera found a two-week-old blesbok (南非白面大羚羊) — whom they named Meme — on her own. She was spotted wandering around on her own after her mother passed away.(野生动物摄影师Sam Turley和他的妻子Vera独自发现了一只两周大的南非白面大羚羊,他们给它取名为Meme。在她母亲去世后,有人发现她独自四处游荡。)”可知,Meme在被发现时母亲去世了,成了孤儿。故选A项。
根据第二段中“Meme would follow Vera wherever she went and sometimes the couple would have a blesbok, a dog and a cat all walking together.(无论Vera走到哪里,Meme都会跟着她,有时,这对夫妇还会带着一只南非白面大羚羊、一只狗和一只猫一起散步。)”
根据第五段中“After rescuing the lonely animal, Sam and Vera found it extremely emotional to have to release her back out into the wild to fend for herself — even though they knew it was the right thing to do.(在拯救了这只孤独的动物之后,Sam和Vera发现,不得不把她放回野外让她……自己,这让他们非常激动——尽管他们知道这是一件正确的事情。)”可知,在救了并照顾了孤独的Meme一段时间后,Sam和Vera需要把Meme放归到野外,这意味着Meme需要自己照顾自己。因此,fend意为“照顾”,与care意思一致。故选A项。
根据全文最后一句“They had put so much time, effort and energy into raising her but to see her walking in a herd of blesbok made it all worthwhile.(他们花了那么多时间、努力和精力把她养大,但看到她在一群南非白面大羚羊中行走,这一切都值得了。)”

The world’s biggest electric vehicle — a 45-ton mining dump truck named the eDumper — may have to give up its throne. A newcomer powered with both electricity and a reserve of hydrogen fuel, is going to steal that title as the largest electric mining truck.
London-based Anglo American is developing the beast of a machine — it weighs 290 tons — as part of its sustainable mining vision. The conceptual work is done, but UK-based Williams Advanced Engineering will bring the truck to life. The idea is to replace the vehicle’s diesel engine (柴油机) with a high-power modular lithium-ion battery (锂电池). “We are delighted to be involved in this innovative and exciting project which shows the potential of battery technology that can adapt to increased demands, from automotive and motorsport to ‘heavy duty’ industrial applications,” Craig Wilson, managing director of Williams Advanced Engineering, said.
While the eDumper — a mining truck used to move stones from the sides of mountains in Switzerland — relies entirely on pure electricity and pure physics for power, the Anglo American truck will use both a lithium-ion battery and hydrogen fuel cell (电池) module. Altogether, the new truck will have over 1,000 Kilowatt hours of energy storage.
Hydrogen fuel is a clear fuel that produces only water as a by-product when consumed in a fuel cell. It’s typically produced from natural gas, nuclear power, or renewable wind and solar power. Adding hydrogen fuel cells to the vehicle’s battery will allow the truck to run for longer periods of time without recharging.
There’s also a third type of power that comes into play with the Anglo American truck: kinetic (动力的) energy created through the process of regenerative braking (再生制动系统). When an electric vehicle — be it the Anglo American truck, or the eDumper — rolls down a hill, that movement creates electrical energy for the battery as you brake. The electric motors power the car through the battery’s stored energy, but can also become mini generators that return some energy back to the battery.
After Anglo American finishes test trials with the truck, the firm will conduct studies to understand how the truck’s power units can be used to provide energy storage in other applications.
28. What can be known about “the eDumper”?
A. It weighs more than 290 tons.
B. It is powered by hydrogen fuel.
C. It will no longer be the largest electric truck.
D. It will discourage buyers for being expensive.
29. What is Craig Wilson’s attitude towards the future of the lithium-ion battery?
A. Negative. B. Neutral. C. Indifferent. D. Positive.
30. What is the benefit of adopting hydrogen fuel cells?
A. It can save a lot of money.
B. Vehicles become more eco-friendly.
C. It has no environmental impact at all.
D. Vehicles no longer need to be recharged.
31. According to Paragraph 5, which of the following can be a feature of regenerative braking?
A. Autonomous braking. B. Simple operation.
C. Energy transformation. D. Zero-carbon emission.
C 29. D 30. B 31. C

How many different emotions, really, can run through a person’s mind? Some scientists have argued that there are six distinct types, give or take — anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise, and happiness. But based on Americans’ descriptions of their own experiences in a recent study, there may actually be many more.
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley enlisted online participants to indicate their emotional responses to a stock of more than 2,000 video clips and GIFs featuring baby animals, an awkward high-five, a starry sky, graphic violence and nudity, and many other flavors of imagery discovered from the depths of the internet.
Based on statistical analyses, the team concluded that a series of 27 separate categories of emotion best accounted for viewers’ announced experiences — ranging from “empathic pain” (imagine watching a Jackass stunt) to “adoration” (common when viewing puppies) to straightforward “excitement.” Meanwhile, certain emotions, such as awkwardness and amusement, were often caused by the same video. “There doesn’t seem to be a clear boundary between categories,” says Alan Cowen, who co-authored the report with Dacher Keltner.
The researchers also produced an interactive visualization based on the emotional responses to each clip. The closeness of emotion labels to one another loosely indicates how frequently the emotions tended to arise at the same time.
The map is not final: It leaves out emotions like envy and shame, which might require more personal forms of elicitation (引出), and its categories could vary across cultures. But it does illustrate the richness of our emotional landscape, and that in itself is pretty exciting.
32. What is mainly discussed in paragraph 2?
A. Research purposes. B. Research process.
C. Research methods. D. Research results.
33. Which of the following is NOT one of the research findings?
A. A total of 27 separate categories of emotion are identified.
B. It requires more personal forms to cause envy and shame.
C. The boundary between categories of emotion seems vague.
D. Awkwardness and amusement can arise by watching the same video.
34. What is true about the interactive visualization map?
A. The map is to be continued.
B. Emotion labels are close to each other.
C. Our emotional landscape is not rich enough.
D. Many emotions tend to occur at the same time.
35. What method is mainly used in the research?
A. Making comparisons. B. Making assumptions.
C. Doing questionnaires. D. Analyzing data.
B 33. B 34. A 35. D
根据第二段“Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley enlisted online participants to indicate their emotional responses to a stock of more than 2,000 video clips and GIFs featuring baby animals, an awkward high-five, a starry sky, graphic violence and nudity, and many other flavors of imagery discovered from the depths of the internet.
故填based.
故填an.
be required to do sth是固定短语,意为“被要求做某事”。故填to master.
故填to.
故填which.

When Micah was a child, I used to do many things with her. Later, I got promoted and was always on constant business holidays. Three years’ devotion to work resulted in my absence from her life and now she was a teenage girl. Recently, I eventually managed to have abundant time to accompany her.
For the last few weeks, Micah had watched mockingbirds (嘲鸫) make a nest in a tree and lay eggs there. Sometimes, I came to accompany her without being invited. But whenever I made an attempt to break the ice, “I’m good” was about all she said to me. Code for “Leave me alone”.
“Why doesn’t she want to do things with me?” I thought as I set the table for dinner one evening, hoping for an emotion bridge to reappear between us. Did she feel hurt with my long absence or feel ignored? Lost in thought, I was seeking to mend the relationship.
“Mom!” Micah yelled suddenly, “Come quick!”
Surprised, I rushed out only to find a little baby bird on the ground, weak and helpless. My eyes went to the branches above.
“The wind must have blown him out of the nest,” I said.
“No, it was Mr. Whiskers—our cat. You let him go outside!” Micah said, a bit annoyed.
Looking at the nest without the parents, “I’m sorry,” I said and put the bird in my palm cautiously and gently. She didn’t respond, but did not refuse my offer to help, either. Deciding to take care of the little baby till it became independent, I placed it in its nest. “What should we do next?” I asked. No response again. Instead, Micah went inside and hopped on her iPad. “Bird videos?” I asked. “Yes. I’m finding out what to feed it,” she said seriously.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

She was more focused than ever. Soon, she exclaimed merrily, “That’s it! This special kind of bird food.” She switched the page to a shopping site. Seconds later, she said, “The food will be delivered soon.” Her efficiency shocked me. “When did you learn all this?” No response. I quickly changed the subject. “How about giving it a name?” This suggestion aroused her interest. She rolled her eyes. “Chance?” she asked, looking at me. “Good name. A chance to take care of the bird.” I said. She was stunned at first, but then beamed at me.(90词)
Before long, the bird food was delivered and we fed the bird “Chance” at once. Thankfully, the food was to its taste. “Mom, Chance likes the food.” she said, flashing a smile to me. “Shall we get worms for it?” I proposed. She became excited. The following few weeks when we caught the worms witnessed her attachment to me. As Chance circled high in the sky, relief filled my heart. “Listen! Chance is singing!” screamed Micah. “Yes, maybe Chance is thanking us for nursing it.” I replied. But inside, I really thanked Chance for giving me a chance to accompany Micah.(86词)

C. Effortless. D. Rewarding.
C
D

It protects skin cells from environmental damage. Vitamin C’s main function in skin is that of a powerful antioxidant, protecting us from cell damage caused by free radicals (自由基). “____37____,” Dr. Mack explains, and they are highly reactive. Vitamin C destroys these free radicals by donating electrons, preventing them from damaging skin.
____38____. Vitamin C is also one of the gold standards for evening skin tone and boosting radiance. “Vitamin C is a well-known skin brightener, preventing melanin production and eventually fading dark spots, resulting in a better skin tone,” Dr. Mack explains.
It firms skin and promotes collagen (胶原蛋白) production. Our skin is made of collagen and elastin, which are proteins that give it structure and flexibility. ____39____. “Daily application of vitamin C helps to maintain the completeness of the collagen that we have, prevents rapid breakdown with age and promotes collagen production,” Dr. Mack says.
It works with other antioxidants for enhancing UV (紫外线) protection. ____40____. A study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology showed that the combination of vitamin C and E not only offered improved stability of vitamins C and E, but also improved skin’s UV protection.
A. It brightens skin
B. It helps lower the risk of heart disease and depression
C. Vitamin C works cooperatively with vitamin E to reduce UV damage in skin
D. Free radicals are produced by the body when exposed to radiation in sunlight
E. But this popular vitamin has several benefits for skin when applied topically, too
F. Free radicals are believed to be related to heart disease, cancer and the ageing process
G. As we age, the production of these proteins decreases and our skin looks and feels less firm

With the seasons changing, now is the wonderful time to start planning summer experiences at outdoor theatres in parks, city squares, woodlands and even the side of a cliff!
Storyhouse Theatre, Chester
Every summer in July, Storyhouse Theatre packs up their props, and builds an entire amphitheatre (露天剧场) along the road in Grosvenor Park. This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary and the usually unknown works of Shakespeare amongst other things.
Thorington Theatre, Suffolk
A new and beautiful addition to the outdoor theatre world, opening in 2021, Thorington is a natural amphitheatre hidden in the Suffolk woodlands. This year’s programme includes family favorites such as Teddy Bear’s Picnic and The Little Mermaid. You can also now order a picnic to meet you an hour before your show in an adjoining field.
Minack Theatre, Cornwall
Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre; seeing anything at all, back dropped by the blue Cornish sea, will be an unforgettable experience. If you want a show particularly fitting for this unique surroundings, check out The Pirates of Penzance playing in July.
Willow Globe Theatre, Powys
An intimate theatre, the Willow Globe’s design is based on the London Globe Theatre. Their programme is largely filled with all things about Shakespeare: straight plays, of course, but also plenty of fun introductions and interpretations to bring his words to new or reluctant audience.

26. Which word can best replace the underlined word “fend” in Paragraph 5?
A. Care. B. Look. C. Search. D. Hunt.
27. Which of the following can best describe the act of rescuing the blesbok?
A. Unsatisfactory. B. Heartbreaking.
C. Effortless. D. Rewarding.
