Human voices produce much more fear in wild animals than the sound of lions, a study in South Africa has found.
Scientists played recordings of people talking normally through speakers hidden at water holes in the Kruger National Park. About 95% of animals were completely scared and quickly ran away.Compared with human voices, recordings of angry roaring lions elicited much less alarm.
During the experiment they noted that some elephants even tried to walk towards the sound when hearing the lion calls. The study's findings suggest that the animals including elephants and giraffes have learnt that being close to humans is completely dangerous. It is the result of hunting, the use of guns and the use of dogs to catch them.
The fear that animals show goes further than the Kruger National Park. A
worldwide research shows wildlife fears humans more than any other animal-killers, according to the study.
The researchers note that this produces a difficult task for areas which depend on wildlife tourism, because the human visitors they want to attract are scaring off the animals that they come to see. The findings also open up the possibility to protect endangered animals in the wild. Human sounds, when used properly, could help protect against hunting. “We are working on experiments testing whether we can stop endangered animals from coming to hot hunting areas," the researchers said.
1. What has the study in South Africa found?
A. Humans are more afraid of lions than wild animals.
B. Wild animals are more afraid of lions than humans.
C. Wild animals are more afraid of humans than lions.
D. Lions are more afraid of humans than wild animals.

Have you ever heard of the internet tag “20 minutes for parks”? It comes from a theory from the International Journal of Environmental Health Research. According to the theory, spending just 20 minutes in a park daily helps to reduce stress, no matter how you choose to spend that time. In the Douban interest group “We Love Wandering in the Park”, lovers from both home and abroad share their park experiences, post photos and offer recommendations and reviews of parks.
Huang Bingbing, living in Shenzhen, is a fan and doer of this idea. Three years ago, when she was still working at an advertising company, she used to frequently visit the small park downstairs during her weekday lunch breaks. “On that piece of grass, 1 could connect with living plants and animals. It allowed me to refresh my mind and heal from the stress of work,” Huang explained.
Huang believes that parks are private spaces, where one can fully sense the growth of plants, the warmth of the sunlight, the gentle touch of breeze and the energy of nature. Parks are also the perfect recharging spot for people to get energy from nature.
At the same time, parks also serve as public spaces. Cheng Yuyan, the founder of the “We Love Wandering in the Park” interest group, found something interesting during her visits to parks in Japan. She noticed that many park benches were donated by local people and featured the givers’ nameplates (姓名牌). Additionally, many parks offered guidebooks telling the history, geography and blooming schedules of the plants within.
Inspired by this, Cheng believes people can further deepen their connection with parks by developing a sense of ownership. She plans to encourage members of her Douban group to take similar responsibilities. “I hope this group shows more social responsibility. Each of us can become a guardian and contributor to the parks and our city,” she said.

Scientists have grown plants in soil that came from the Moon. The plants didn't grow as well as those grown in soil from Earth, but the experiment marks an important step towards growing plants on the Moon.
The Moon's soil is called "regolith (风化层)," and there's not a lot of it on Earth. Most of it was collected over 50 years ago during different space trips. Because the regolith is so valuable, it took the scientists many years to use it.
The scientists didn't receive much soil. The regolith came from three different space trips. Some soil was taken from the top layer(层)of the Moon's surface, while the rest came from deeper layers. Different soil depths helped scientists understand how different layers of Moon soil affect plant growth.
The scientists chose a special plant for their experiment. It's a small plant related to broccoli(西兰花) that can grow in very little soil. Scientists know a lot about the DNA of this plant, which helps them understand how it grows in the soil it's planted in. The plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, is widely used in research due to its simple genes and rapid growth.
By studying changes in the DNA of the plants growing in the Moon's soil, scientists may one day find new ways to help plants grow better in the Moon's soil. This research is important for long trips to the Moon and future efforts to live in space.
“The ability to take plants successfully with us to the Moon is how we'll grow our own food," said one of the researchers.“Showing that plants will grow in the Moon's soil is actually a huge step in that direction." The experiment's success opens the door for future progress in growing food in space.
1. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A. The plants in the Moon's soil grew better than those in Earth's soil.
B. Scientists have successfully grown plants on the Moon.
C. The plants in the Moon's soil didn't grow as well as in Earth's soil.
D. Plants cannot grow in Moon soil at all.
2. Why did it take the scientists many years to be allowed to use "regolith"?
A. It cannot be used to grow plants. B. It was kept by space programs.
C. It was collected from the Moon. D. It is very valuable.
3. What can we infer about the plant chosen for the experiment?
A. It would change its DNA. B. It needed little soil.
C. It could grow well in the regolith. D. Scientists know little about its DNA.
4. Why are scientists studying DNA changes in plants grown in Moon soi1?
A. To learn about the history of the Moon.
B. To create new types of plants for space.
C. To improve the quality of Moon soil.
D. To understand how plants grow in different environments.
5. What is the main ideas of the passage?
A. Scientists grew plants in Moon soil.
B. Astronauts returned to Earth safely.
C. Space programs collected soil from the Moon.
D. Explorers grew food on the Moon.

Which planet is the most beautiful in our solar system? Many people may answer "Saturn". Saturn is a funny-looking planet. It has beautiful rings. Of all the planets in the solar system, Saturn’s rings are the biggest and brightest. According to scientists, however, these rings will one day disappear completely.
How did Saturn get its rings in the first place? Science has no sure answer. But there is a popular theory: Some small planets ran into each other with Saturn's moons. Earth has only one moon. But Saturn has at least 60 moons. And this left behind a large amount of ice and rock pieces.
These pieces are different in size. Some are as small as a grain of sand. Others are as large as a house.'These small pieces began to travel around Saturn. Saturn's gravity pulled them toward it. At the same time, the speed of their orbit tried to throw them into space. Over time, these pieces of ice and rock formed rings around Saturn.
A new study, however, suggests that Saturn's gravity is winning. About ten tons of“ring matter" is falling into Saturn every second, if this continues, the planet's ring system will no longer exist in 100 million to 300 million years' time.
According to scientists, Saturn's rings are between 10 million and 100 million years old.“We're lucky to be able to see Saturn's huge ring system." one of the scientists said.“Some of the planets in our solar system only have very thin rings today. Perhaps we just missed seeing their huge ring systems!"
