La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol close to Valencia in Spain It is claimed to be the biggest food fight in the world.
What Happens at La Tomatina
At around 11 am, many trucks carry more than one hundred tons of over- ripe tomatoes into the centre of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-story-high wooden pole and reached the ham at the top. In practice this process takes a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is the firing of a water gun. After one hour the fighting ends and the cleaning process begins.
The Rules of La Tomatina
Do not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants;
Do not tear other people’s T-shirts;
You must squeeze (捏碎) the tomatoes before throwing them;
As soon as you hear the second shot of the water gun, you must stop throwing tomatoes.
Useful Advice
Wear old shoes and clothes that you do not mind throwing away afterwards. They will most likely end up damaged or incredibly dirty;
Don’t wear slippers. You may get hurt, or you could lose them easily during the battle;
If you are not from Bunol, and you want to stay overnight, don’t forget to look for and secure accommodation in advance.
Stay safe and enjoy the festivities as much as possible!

On the 25th of December, my mother expected her children to be present, exchanging gifts and eating turkey. But as an artist and daughter, my heart seemed to be more in my work as an artist. As for my mother and my family, I thought we would have more time to spend Christmas together. I was going to do my own thing.
I made plans for my winter adventure in New Hampshire. The MacDowell Colony (麦道尔艺术村) was everything I could have wished for. About 20 to 30 artists were present, and it was as captivating as I had imagined. Snowy New England, sledding (滑雪橇) and whisky! It felt like my life had become an unexpected independent film.
By Christmas Eve, I had been at the colony more than a week. The fresh feelings were wearing off, but I would never admit it. Everyone around me was having too much fun—drinks and deep conversations by the fireplace. It seemed so amazing! What was wrong with me? This was the holiday I’d always dreamed of. No plastic reindeer. Not a Christmas sweater anywhere in sight. People here didn’t even say “Christmas”, but they said “holiday”. Then why was I so down?
Finally, I called home. My dad answered. He told me that my mother was out shopping with my brothers. I found there was a fire in my heart. They were having a fine Christmas without me? Didn’t they miss me? How could they?
Despite a serious snowstorm, a large package with my mother’s beautiful handwriting showed up near my door at the artist colony on Christmas morning. I seized it as if I had been five years old. Inside was my favorite cake.
As I sliced (切) the cake, everyone gathered around —young and old. My mother had sent a real homemade gift. It was a minor Christmas miracle that one cake managed to feed so many. We ate it from paper towels with our hands, satisfying a hunger we didn’t know we had and reminding us of our dear families, who must be missing us too.
4. Why was the author unwilling to spend Christmas at home?
A. She met some trouble at work.
B. She wanted to focus on her career.
C. She had disagreements with her mother.
D. She was tired of staying at a familiar place.
5. What does the underlined word “captivating” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Attractive. B. Tough. C. Strange. D. Simple.
6. What can we learn about the artist colony from Paragraph 3?
A. It attracted many sports lovers.
B. It was suitable for holiday parties.
C. It lacked the Christmas atmosphere.
D. It gave the author some artistic ideas.
7. What did the author mainly intend to express in the last two paragraphs?
A. She learned to be open to others.
B. She enjoyed bringing kindness to strangers.
C. Her mother was good at taking care of her family.
D. Her mother’s cake cured the artists of their homesickness.
B 5. A 6. C 7. D

根据第一段“On the 25th of December, my mother expected her children to be present, exchanging gifts and eating turkey. But as an artist and daughter, my heart seemed to be more in my work as an artist. As for my mother and my family, I thought we would have more time to spend Christmas together. I was going to do my own thing. (12月25日,我母亲期待她的孩子们都在场,交换礼物和吃火鸡。但作为一个艺术家和女儿,我的心似乎更多地在我作为一名艺术家的工作中。至于我的母亲和我的家人,我想我们会有更多的时间一起度过圣诞节。我要做我自己的事情。)”可知,即使是圣诞节这个全家团聚的时候,作者更在意自己的事业。故选B项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段的第二句开始“The MacDowell Colony (麦道尔艺术村) was everything I could have wished for. About 20 to 30 artists were present, and it was as captivating as I had imagined. Snowy New England, sledding (滑雪橇) and whisky! It felt like my life had become an unexpected independent film. (麦道尔艺术村是我所希望的一切。大约有20到30位艺术家在场,这和我想象的一样captivating。白雪皑皑的新英格兰,滑雪橇和威士忌!感觉我的生活变成了一部意想不到的独立电影。)”可知,麦道尔艺术村是作者梦寐以求的地方,有很多吸引作者的元素。因此猜测captivating意为“吸引”,与A项Attractive意思相近,故选A项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段第三句开始“Everyone around me was having too much fun—drinks and deep conversations by the fireplace. It seemed so amazing! What was wrong with me? This was the holiday I’d always dreamed of. No plastic reindeer. Not a Christmas sweater anywhere in sight. People here didn’t even say “Christmas”, but they said “holiday”. Then why was I so down?
根据最后第二段“Despite a serious snowstorm, a large package with my mother’s beautiful handwriting showed up near my door at the artist colony on Christmas morning. I seized it as if I had been five years old. Inside was my favorite cake. (尽管暴风雪肆虐,圣诞节的早晨,一个写着我母亲美丽笔迹的大包裹出现在艺术家聚居地的我的门口。我抓住了它,就好像我五岁一样。里面是我最喜欢的蛋糕。)”,以及最后一段“As I sliced (切) the cake, everyone gathered around —young and old. My mother had sent a real homemade gift. It was a minor Christmas miracle that one cake managed to feed so many. We ate it from paper towels with our hands, satisfying a hunger we didn’t know we had and reminding us of our dear families, who must be missing us too. (当我切蛋糕时,每个人都围了过来——无论老少。我母亲送来了一份真正的自制礼物。一个蛋糕能喂饱这么多人,真是个小小的圣诞奇迹。我们用手从纸巾上吃它,满足了我们不知道的饥饿感,并提醒我们:亲爱的家人,他们一定也在想念我们。)”可知,一块家里制作的圣诞蛋糕,让这一群艺术家想起了家人,治愈了艺术家们的思乡病。故选D项。
C
Although toys' packaging says it's' educational , it doesn't make it so. That's the finding from a new study in JAMA Pediatrics that found some toys being marketed as language promoters got in the way of learning.
Research shows that for kids to understand, speak and eventually read or write a language, they need to hear it -- lots of it. And it's' never too early for parents and to caregivers to get talking. That explains the booming industry in talking electronic toys that claim to help kids learn language.
Professor Anna Sosa, of Northern Arizona University, led the study and says she gave families three different kinds of toys to play with: books, traditional toys like humble blocks and a shape sorter, and electronic toys. Sosa says she picked those toys because they are advertised in their packaging as language-promoters for babies between the ages of 10 and 16 months.
"We had a talking on farm-animal names and things," Sosa says of the electronic toys. "We had a baby cell phone. And we had a baby laptop. So you open the cover and start pushing buttons, and it tells you things. The parent-child couples were asked to play separately with each type of toy over the course of three days."
"When there's something else that's doing some talking, the parents seem to be sitting on the sidelines and letting the toy talk for them and respond for them, "Sosa says. "That's bad because the best way a toy can promote language in infants and toddlers is by stimulating interaction between parent and child. There's simply no evidence that a young child can learn language directly from a toy. It isn't responsive enough. It isn't social."
As for the other toys, traditional blocks and puzzles stimulated more conversation than the electronic toys, and books outscored them all. But don't underestimate the humble block. While traditional toys fell short of books in interaction quantity, Sosa notes, they kept pace in terms of quality.
8. What is the finding of the research led by Professor Anna Sosa?
A. Toy industry is facing new challenge in marketing.
B. Kids should be taught to learn with toys as early as possible.
C. People might be misled by the statements of some toy makers.
D. Parents need to be cautious when choosing toys for their kids.
9. According to the passage, why are talking electronic toys so popular?
A. Because they represent the latest creations.
B. Because they arouse the interest learning.
C. Because they are used as an educational tool.
D. Because they are easy for the kids to control.
10. We can infer from the passage that it is necessary for the parents ______________.
A. to share their experiences of reading with their kids
B. to spare more time to stay with their kids at home
C. to encourage their kids to attend social activities
D. to get involved in the conversations on with their kids
11. What is the author's attitude to electronic toys as language promoters?
A. Critical. B. Doubtful.
C. Supportive. D. Objective.
C 9. C 10. D 11. A
Although toys' packaging says it's' educational , it doesn't make it so.(虽然玩具的包装上写着“有教育意义”,但它并没有做到这一点)以及第四段的When there's something else that's doing some talking, the parents seem to be sitting on the sidelines and letting the toy talk for them and respond for them(当有其他东西在说话时,家长们似乎坐在一旁,让玩具替他们说话,替他们回应),由此可知,Anna Sosa教授领导的研究发现人们可能会被一些玩具制造商的声明所误导,故选C。
That explains the booming industry in talking electronic toys that claim to help kids learn language.(这就解释了为什么那些声称可以帮助孩子学习语言的会说话的电子玩具行业正在蓬勃发展的原因),可知会说话的电子玩具如此受欢迎的原因是因为他们被作为一种教育工具,故选C。
That's bad because the best way a toy can promote language in infants and toddlers is by stimulating interaction between parent and child.(因为玩具促进婴幼儿语言能力的最佳方式是刺激父母和孩子之间的互动),由此可推知,对于父母来说参与到和孩子的会话中是有必要的,故选D。
That's the finding from a new study in JAMA Pediatrics that found some toys being marketed as language promoters got in the way of learning.(该研究发现,一些作为语言促进剂销售的玩具妨碍了儿童的学习)由此可知,本文作者对电子玩具促进语言发展的态度是批判的,故选A。
That's bad because the best way a toy can promote language in infants and toddlers is by stimulating interaction between parent and child.(因为玩具促进婴幼儿语言能力的最佳方式是刺激父母和孩子之间的互动),由此可进行推断。
D
Chinese material scientists have found the soil on the moon may potentially be able to generate oxygen and fuel, a finding that means more possibilities of humans to use lunar resources to further exploration of the moon and beyond.
The researchers at Nanjing University showed that the lunar sample brought back by China’s Chang’e-5 contains active compounds (化合物) that can change carbon dioxide into oxygen and fuel. Initially, they hoped to design a system that took advantage of lunar soil and solar radiation, the two rich resources on the moon, according to a study published on Thursday in the journal Joule.
After analyzing the Chang’e-5’s lunar soil, the team found the sample contained metal- rich substances, which could work as a catalyst (催化剂) to make oxygen using sunlight and carbon dioxide. The team proposed a strategy using lunar soil to electrolyze water from the moon and the astronauts’ life support system into oxygen and hydrogen. The process was powered by sunlight. The carbon dioxide breathed out by moon inhabitants can be collected and combined with hydrogen to produce the fuel, also catalyzed by the lunar soil, according to the study. The researchers said with this method, no external energy apart from sunlight would be used to produce oxygen and fuel to support life on a moon base.
“We use the environmental resources to minimize rocket payload, and our strategy provides a scenario for a sustainable and affordable living environment for life out of the Earth,” said the paper’s first author Yao Yingfang from Nanjing University, expressing his assumption.
“The challenge lies in the fact that catalytic efficiency of lunar soil is lower than catalysts on the Earth,” said the researchers. They are testing different approaches in order to improve the design. The team is looking for an opportunity to test the system in space with China’s future manned lunar missions.
12. What is the main implication of Chinese scientists’ discovery of the moon’s soil?
A. The moon is rich in rare elements. B. Lunar soil can be used for exploring space.
C. The moon can be lived on by humans. D. Lunar soil is a new renewable energy source.
13. What did the researchers work on according to paragraph 3?
A. The process of the sun producing light.
B. The analysis of China’s Chang’e-5’s work.
C. The supportive method producing metal-rich substances.
D. The sustainable living strategy employing lunar resources.
14. What does the underlined word “scenario” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Contract. B. Profession. C. Possibility. D. Sponsor.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The discovery of active compounds on the moon.
B. The testing approaches to improving the lunar soil.
C. The research on the environmental system of the moon.
D. The study of using lunar soil for oxygen and fuel production.
B 13. D 14. C 15. D

根据第三段的“The team proposed a strategy using lunar soil to electrolyze water from the moon and the astronauts’ life support system into oxygen and hydrogen. The process was powered by sunlight. The carbon dioxide breathed out by moon inhabitants can be collected and combined with hydrogen to produce the fuel, also catalyzed by the lunar soil, according to the study.(该团队提出了一种策略,利用月球土壤将月球和宇航员生命维持系统中的水电解成氧气和氢气。这个过程是由阳光驱动的。根据这项研究,月球居民呼出的二氧化碳可以被收集起来,并与氢结合来生产燃料,也可以由月球土壤催化。) ”可知,研究人员利用月球资源进行可持续生存策略的研究。故选D。
【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段的“The researchers said with this method, no external energy apart from sunlight would be used to produce oxygen and fuel to support life on a moon base.

Digital technologies are taking up too much of our time and attention. Many of us will spend a significant part of our lives staring at screens, missing out on satisfying relationships and feeling more emotional pain. For many years, we’ve been taught that the solution to this potential harm is some form of digital detox (脱瘾), which mainly shows us what not to do after our digital addiction. ____16____ Try the following three steps to achieve balance in your and your family’s digital life:
Determine your problem times
Identify the times and situations when being on screens is making your life worse. It could be when you are streaming a TV series right before bed, feeling depressed afterward and losing hours of sleep. Or you could be getting stuck on your device at the dinner table and end up getting distracted. ____17____ Identify your top two or three problem situations.
____18____
Once you identify the pain points, for example, scrolling (滚动浏览) on TikTok for hours keeps you from sleeping and makes you feel depressed afterward), ask yourself: What is screen time replacing and what goals is it serving? In other words, what are you actually hungry for? You might be endlessly scrolling because you want to feel uplifted at the end of the day. Write down the things you really want.
Try a substitute
____19____ It’s crucial to pick something that consistently makes you feel good. For example, if your goal is social connection, make plans for a nice meal with a friend or take that weekly meeting in person rather than via Zoom. If your goal is inspiration, schedule time for oil painting, reading historical fiction or whatever it is that uplifts you. ____20____ And at last, you will become empowered, healthy and wise digital citizens.
A. Identify your true desire.
B. Determine your pain points.
C. Pretty soon, these replacements will make you feel more satisfied.
D. But the only way to truly gain control is to take positive steps in advance.
E. Or maybe you are inefficient at work because you’re doing too much online shopping.
F. Ask yourself how you can meet those needs through something other than screen time.
G. If your digital life is out of balance, reducing time on devices is an important first step.

I was walking along the road to school one day and I met my friend Raine. He suggested that we skip school and go to the movies. I refused as my dad was very fierce and strict. After much persuasion, I gave in. There was a Will Smith movie on and I was a fan.
So we set off to the movies together, bought our tickets, popcorn and drinks and settled down comfortably. As we were early, the lights were still on. We watched people come in groups, families and there were couples too. Some of them looked like school students playing truant(逃学)like us. As I turned around, I caught a glimpse of my uncle Andy and Aunt Jane walking in. They were kind and cared about me very much. I sank into my seat quickly to avoid being spotted. I signaled to Raine that there was someone I didn’t want to see and Raine made it more obvious by turning around and asking “Who? And where?” loudly. It made me sit even lower in my seat.
To make things worse, they came and sat in the row behind us and were saying to each other how I would have loved to come to this movie as I adored Will Smith. They were even commenting about the students playing truant. Soon the movie began and I was glad when the lights were turned off but I didn’t enjoy the movie at all for fear of being spotted. So, I sat there like an astronaut, peering over the front seat.
Every now and then I would secretly take a quick look at my aunt and uncle. I was sure they were also looking at me. Feeling nervous and anxious, I kept wondering how I could leave the cinema without being noticed.
注意:
1.所续写短文词数应为150左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
When the movie ended and the lights came on, I remained seated. Hearing the crowds slowly move towards the door, my heart was beating wildly, but I knew if I stood up, I might be discovered. It felt like forever until almost all the people left. I peeked at where my aunt and uncle had been and found they were gone. Raine nodded at me, and we made a dash out of the door and fled down the stairs. I was running towards the gate of the cinema like crazy when I spotted two familiar figures.
In front of us were my aunt and uncle, waiting at the gate. “We saw you the moment we came in. You haven’t really enjoyed the movie, have you?” Out of breath, we hung our head in shame. Biting my lips, I heard Raine trying to defend ourselves, “It was my idea, Sir! But school is boring!” A long, horrible silence. Then my aunt just asked us to think about how worried my mother and how angry and disappointed my father would be. Raine said no more, and I felt even guiltier. In the end, we decided to make a sincere apology to my parents and my teachers as well.

La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol close to Valencia in Spain. It is claimed to be the biggest food fight in the world.
Do not bring bottles or hard objects as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants;
Do not tear other people’s T-shirts;
You must squeeze (捏碎) the tomatoes before throwing them;
As soon as you hear the second shot of the water gun, you must stop throwing tomatoes.
Useful Advice
Wear old shoes and clothes that you do not mind throwing away afterwards. They will most likely end up damaged or incredibly dirty;
Don’t wear slippers. You may get hurt, or you could lose them easily during the battle;
If you are not from Bunol, and you want to stay overnight, don’t forget to look for and secure accommodation in advance.
Stay safe and enjoy the festivities as much as possible!

B
4 Why was the author unwilling to spend Christmas at home?

注意:
1.所续写短文词数应为150左右;
