(一)
阅读下列短文,然后从各题所给的A.B.C. D四个选项中,选出一个最佳答案.
In 1789 the U. S. government passed a law which said that the land of the American Indians could never be taken from them without their agreement. One hundred years later, however, the Indians only had a very small part of the land that originally belonged to them. How did this great injustice (不公正) occur?
After 1812 white settlers began to move west across North America. At first, the settlers and the Indians lived in peace. However, the number of settlers increased greatly every year, and slowly the Indians began to see the white settlers as a danger to their survival. To feed themselves, the settlers killed more and more wild animals. The Indians, who depended on these animals for food, had to struggle against starvation. The settlers also brought with them many diseases which were common in white society, but which were new for the Indians. Great numbers of Indians became sick and died. Between 1843 and 1854 the Indian population in one area of the country went down from 100,000 to 30,000.
More land was needed for the increasing number of white settlers. In Washington, the old respect for the rights of the Indians disappeared. The old promises to the Indians were broken; the government began to move groups of Indians from their original homelands to other poorer parts of the country. Some Indians reacted angrily and violently to this treatment. They began to attack white settlers, and the Indian war began. For 30 years, until the late 1880s, different groups of Indians fought against the injustices of the white man. They had a few famous successes, but the result of the struggle was never in doubt. There were too many white soldiers, and they were too powerful. Many Indians were killed; the survivors were moved from their homelands to different areas of the country. It was a terrible chapter in the history of a country that promised freedom and equality to everyone.
31. It can be inferred form the passage that ________.
A. in the U. S. there were many laws that provided the rights of American Indians
B. the law which was passed in 1789 by the U. S. government was not successfully carried out
C. in the 19th century no injustices were done against the Indians by the U. S. government
D. the majority of white settlers were openly opposed to the law passed in 1789
32. According to the passage which of the following is TRUE?
A. The Indians believed that killing too many wild animals had disturbed the balance of nature.
B. The government began to have a better understanding of the Indians in the fifties of the nineteenth century.
C. Between 1843 and 1854 about 70,000 Indians were killed in the battle.
D. The whites carried serious diseases into where the Indians lived.
33. It is implied in the passage that ________.
A. the Indians had many great successes in the Indians wars
B. the Indians had no doubt that they would win the wars
C. after the war the Indians stayed where they were before
D. the Indians were too weak to win the struggle
34. What is the writer’s opinion about the treatment that the Indians received from the U. S. government?
A. He believed that the government always respected the rights of the Indians.
B. He believed that the government can’t be criticized for its treatment to the Indians.
C. He believed that the government treated the Indians unjustly.
D. He believed that the government’s unfair treatment against the Indians was not on purpose.

I travel a lot in my work, and one of the things I dislike about this part of my job is eating alone. It always makes me feel lonely to see others laughing and talking.
After having room service three nights in a row at a Wyndham Hotel in Houston, I needed to get out. Although the restaurant opened at 6:30, I arrived at 6:25. The maitre d’ (领班) met me and commented on “my being there really early”. I explained my dislike of eating alone in restaurants. He then seated me at a lovely table and handed me the menu. “You know,” he said. “People don’t usually start coming to our restaurant until after 7:00. I wondered if you’d mind if I sat down with you for a while.”
I was delighted! He sat and talked with me about his hobbies. After about 15 minutes, he spotted some customers at the front desk and excused himself. I noticed that before he went to the front, he stopped in the kitchen for a moment.
As my new friend went on to seat the arriving party, one of the waiters came out of the kitchen and over to my table. “My station is in the back this evening. And I’m sure no one will be seated there for a while,” he said. “Do you mind if I sit down with you for a while?” We had a wonderful chat. After he left, out came one of the young busboys (收盘工). We had great fun talking about his experiences. Before I left that night, even the chef had come out of the kitchen and sat with me!
When I asked for my check they all came over in a big group to my table and presented me with a red rose and said, “This was a nicest night we’ve never had in our restaurant.” And I cried! What had begun as a lonely night ended as a beautiful experience — for both employees and customer.
35. Why did the author go to the restaurant before its opening time?
A. Because she was very hungry.
B. Because she didn’t like waiting long for tables.
C. Because she wanted to talk to the waiters.
D. Because she didn’t want to eat by herself.
36. What does the underlined phrase “new friend” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The waiter. B. The maitre d’.
C. The busboy. D. The new customer.
37. When the author was presented with a rose, she was ________.
A. annoyed B. embarrassed C. moved D. sad
38. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Traveling Alone. B. Not on the Menu.
C. Out of Service. D. A Lovely Rose.

Dear Howard,
I’m glad to share the customs and traditions of Chinese New Year’s Eve with you The Chinese New Year’s Eve is on the last day of the Chinese lunar calendar.
To get ready for the festival, people clean and decorate their homes and put up couplets. On that day, people light firecrackers for good luck, watch the Spring Festival Gala on TV and get together for a big dinner. Everyone wears their new clothes and visits their parents and relatives. In recent years, however, there have been some new ways of celebrating the festival.
What’s more, more and more people choose to pay a New Year call on the phone or through the video. Best wishes!
Yours,
Xiao Wang
