My wife always wanted a Vizsla, so when we got the house, the garden and everything sorted, we did some research and found a lovely breeder (饲养员) based in Scotland. He was in charge of everything, so a few months go by and the next thing I know, we’ve got a puppy!
I’ve grown up with animals all my life, and I’m so glad I have. I love the fact that I was never afraid of any animals. Although you do obviously have to be careful when introducing children to a dog they don’t know, because you don’t know how it’s going to behave, it always saddens me when I see children scared when they walk past Pedro. I think it’s great for kids to learn how to look after an animal.
And obviously for us, as a family, it’s brilliant because we take Pedro for so many walks. It’s a bit of a family bonding experience getting out in the fresh air; taking Pedro for a walk multiple times a day is just really lovely. Meanwhile, the most rewarding, I think, is just seeing how amazing he is with the kids. He is so calm, so protective, so loving, and we are his world.
I think the most challenging aspects with Pedro were when he was a puppy (小狗). He was pretty hard work. He was never aggressive, but he was quite bitey as puppies are, constantly pulling out your clothes and putting holes in them, which is very annoying. He chewed the furniture-my sofas are barely standing up; their wooden legs are almost in pieces. Obviously, the dog training in the house was quite stressful and his jumping at strangers in the park and running off was always quite scary.
As a new puppy owner, you’re overloaded with advice from social media, magazines, other dog owners and friends, so finding a source of information you trust is so important and can be a real turning point. I know what it’s like to be bombarded with conflicting information, so I would have really welcomed Royal Canin’s “One in a Billion” platform as a new puppy owner. It’s a one-stop shop for new dog owners: a single source of credible information that is so helpful in navigating the early stages of your puppy’s life.
4. What do we know about the author?
A He is inexperienced in raising pets.
B. He is unsupportive of his wife’s desire.

5. What does the author think of Pedro?
A. Dangerous but loyal. B. Playful and gentle.
C. Adorable but troublesome. D. Annoying and fierce.
6. What can we infer according to paragraph 4?
A. Dogs are man’s best friends.
B. It is worthless to have a dog.
C. Puppies are unfriendly to humans.
D. It is challenging to train a puppy.
7 What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To recommend a reliable platform.
B. To share a fun experience.
C. To offer evidence for an argument.
D. To advertise a practical product.
C
There is such a thing as a free lunch, it turns out, as long as you don’t mind too much what it is. Tamara Wilson found hers a few streets away from her west London home — and as well as picking up some unwanted bread and fruit that would otherwise be thrown away, she made a new friend.
Wilson is one of 3.4 million people around the world using an app designed to encourage people to give away rather than throw away surplus (剩余的) food. “It’s such a small thing, but it makes me feel good and my neighbour feel good. And a lot of small acts can end up making a big difference,” she said.
The last few years have seen an explosion in creative ways to tackle food waste by linking supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and individual households to local communities. Olio, the app used by Wilson, saw a fivefold increase in listings during 2022, and the signs are that this rapid growth is continuing into 2023, said Tessa Clarke, its CEO and co-founder.
About a third of all food produced globally is wasted, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Almost 1.4 billion hectares of land — close to 30% of the world’s agricultural land — is dedicated to producing food that is never eaten, and the carbon footprint of food wastage makes it the third contributor of CO2. Reducing food waste is one of the most effective ways of tackling the global climate crisis.
Olio, Clarke said, was an attempt to change this on a small, local scale. “The app connects people with others who have surplus food but don’t have anyone to give it to because so many people are disconnected from their communities.” Users of Olio post images of surplus food that others in the neighbourhood might want. Olio also has a network of 24,000 volunteers who collect surplus food from local supermarkets and stores for app users to claim.
Despite the success of the app, it was hard to make a difference to the huge scale of food waste, Clarke added. “Even though we’re doing well, we’ve only scratched the surface (触及表面). But if everyone makes small changes in the world, we’d dramatically reduce the amount of food that ends up in bins (垃圾桶).”
8. What does the author want to show by telling Wilson’s story?
A. People tend to use apps to order food. B. People prefer to make friends on apps.
C. People find a high-tech fix to food waste. D. People show more concern for each other.
9. What’s the consequence of food waste according to the text?
A. Global warming. B. Loss of land. C. World hunger. D. Poverty and inequality.
10. What does Olio do to help tackle food waste?
A. It sells surplus food to those in need. B. It allows volunteers to stay connected.
C. It provides a platform for people to promote food. D. It fills the information gap between green communities.
11. What does Clarke think of the work on reducing food waste globally?
A. It is a great success. B. It requires joint efforts.
C. It is beyond human power. D. It has won public support.
D
Google has been using Al watermarking to automatically identify text generated by the company’s Gemini chatbot, making it easier to distinguish (辨别) Al-generated content from human-written posts. That watermark system could help prevent misuse of Al chatbots for misinformation and disinformation — not to mention cheating in school and business settings.
Now, the tech company is making an open-source version of its technique available so that other generative Al developers can similarly watermark the output from their own large language models, says Pushmeet Kohli at Google DeepMind, the company’s Al research team, which combines the former Google Brain and Deep-Mind labs. “While SynthID isn’t a silver bullet for identifying Al-generated content, it is an important building block for developing more reliable Al identification tools,” he says.
Independent researchers voiced similar optimism. “While no known watermarking method is absolutely effective, I really think this can help in catching some Al-generated misinformation, academic cheating and more,” says Scott Aaronson at the University of Texas in Austin, who previously worked on AI safety at OpenAI. “I hope that other large language model companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, will follow DeepMind’s lead on this.”
In May of this year, Google DeepMind announced that it had used its SynthID method for watermarking Al-generated text and video from Google’s Gemini and Veo Al services respectively (分别地). The company has now published a paper in the journal Nature showing how SynthID generally outperformed (胜过) similar AI watermarking techniques for text. The comparison involved assessing how easily responses from various watermarked Al models could be detected.
However, a “determined adversary” with huge amounts of computational power could still remove such Al watermarks, says Hanlin Zhang at Harvard University. But he described SynthID’s approach as making sense given the need for scalable (可拓展的) watermarking in Al services.
The researchers also acknowledged that the watermarking works best with longer chatbot responses that can be answered in a variety of ways — such as generating an essay or email— and said it has not yet been tested on responses to maths or coding problems.
Both Google DeepMind’ s team and others described the need for additional safeguards against the misuse of Al chatbots, with Furong Huang, from the University of Maryland, recommending stronger regulation as well. “Mandating (强制执行) watermarking by law would address both the practicality and user adoption challenges, ensuring a more secure use of large language models,” she says.
12. According to Scott Aaronson, the watermarking method is useful in
A. preventing misinformation caused by AI
B. comparing the output from language models
C. combining articles written by Al with those written by humans
D. cheating more efficiently in both academic and business settings
13. The underlined part “determined adversary” in Paragraph 5 refers to
A. a researcher who is able to make up fake data
B. an opponent who makes up his mind to damage the system
C. an Al tool to tell right information from wrong
D. a chatbot which can imitate human beings’ speech
14. Which of the following statements would the author most likely agree with?
A. Watermarking shouldn’t be made law.
B. The technique of watermarking mustn’t be shared
C. Few companies are interested in the watermarking method
D. The effectiveness of watermarking hasn’t been tested in mathematics.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Al-generated writings should be made illegal.
B. Misinformation and cheating caused by use of Al tools.
C. Different opinions on how to identify Al-written essays.
D. A Google tool makes Al-generated writing easily detectable.

And obviously for us as a family, it’s brilliant because we take Pedro for so many walks.

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. B

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. D
