According to the U.S.Department of Agriculture, food prices increased by 0.4%from March
to April2024.And since April2023,they are up a sharp3.4%.To fight inflation(通货膨胀)and

these deals will continue after August.A Target representative has confirmed that these are the
new everyday low prices, which will help out shoppers'wallets for many seasons to come.

My birth was a little more dramatic than the standard way a baby enters the world.I was
born missing my left hand,Indeed,my limb difference could have been a disaster if it hadn't becn
for what happened next.A nurse placed me in my mother's arms and instructed,"You will take her
home. You will love her and treat her as normal."
That is exactly what happened.I played sports, acted in theater, excelled in school and had
playdates with friends. While I did get some stares and "polite"questions about my disability,I
was lucky because I wasn't made fun of for it
However, that fact that I was different hit me hard my first day of high school.I was 13,
age when kids are already very self-conscious and the neod to fit in is mtensified.I remember one
of the other kids on the school bus stared just a little too long at my left arm I felt a sudden urge to
高二英语期末试卷第3页(共10页)
hide my hand,so I slipped it into my pocket.I told myself that I'd just hide it that one day, while I
was trying to make friends. But one day of hiding turned into a week,a month, and years-25 of
them to be exact.
When I was 38 years old, tired of hiding and lonely,I met someone special and invited him
in.The combination of me finally feeling ready to unhide and his willingness to go through the
unhiding process with me was exactly what I needed. For the first time in my life,I allowed
someone to really hold my limb, look at it,touch it,love it-love me.I saw my limb difference
as something unique about me,something that should be shown, not hidden.
It was a transformational experience, and I learned to love me too.It changed how I lived
my entire life and made me happier.I also discovered and joined the Lucky Fin Project,an
organisation devoted to people with all types of disabilities.
Hiding things, especially from loved ones,is tiring and lonely, and it prevents us from
getting help and support. It's time to change that.
24.What was the author's childhood like?
A.She had no social interactions with friends.
B.She was raised with care and treated normally
C.She faced some challenges in school activities.
D.She was upset about the attention to her difference.
25.What happened to the author when she was 13 years old?
A.She began to ignore her disability.
B.She suffered prejudice from some kids.
C.She started hiding herself away from friends.
D.She became sensitive due to her self-awareness.
26.How did the author change when she stopped hiding?
A.She started to open up and be herself.
B.She met someone who cured her disability.
C.She was fed up with the company of others.
D.She reduced involvement in the disability group.
27.What can we learn from this passage?
A.Misfortune is a good teachcr.
B.Disability is not a bamer to success.
C.Self-acceptance can lead to self-love.
D.Nothing beats the feeling of being loved.

A man in a lab coat bends under a dim light with tight eyes looking at a microscope.Time is
short, the pays-off are high, and only this scientist can save everyone. That kind of romanticized
picture of science was standard for a long tume. But it's far from the truth
Some scientists search for the causes of some observable effects.such as the link between
destroyed forests and Earth's temperature increase.Others may investigate the "what"rather than
the "why"of things. For example, ecologists build models to estimate gray wolf abundance in
Montana,US.It's impractical to spot them all and count them.Abundance models are not 100
percent accurate, but they offer estimates that seem good enough to set harvesting quotas (
and maintain the ecosystem.
高二英语期末试卷第4页(共10页)
Beyond the "what"and the "why",scientists may focus on the "how".For instance, the
lives of people living with illnesses can be improved by research on how to relieve symptoms,
even if the true causes of their disorders are largely unknown to current medicine.
People often think"real science"should provide definite,complete and perfect'answers to
their questions. However, given various limitations and the world's complexity, keeping multiple
perspectives in play is often the best way for scientists to reach their goals and solve the problems
at hand.
In the world of science,healthy disagreement is a feature,not a bug.Science is a social
process in which the community's scrutiny ensures we have the best available knowledge.
"Best available"does not mean "definitive",but the best we have until we find out how to
improve it.
The long history of atomism (shows how science is a process rather than a fast
delivery of results set in stone. As scientist Jean Baptiste Perrin conducted his 1908 experiments
that seemingly settled all discussion regarding atoms, questions about the atom's properties were
about to spark decades of controversy with the birth of quantum (physics.Similar
discussions continue to the present day.
So,real science is a collective, imperfect and many-sided process in which scientists
contribute multiple and often partial solutions to complex and diverse problems.
28.How does the author introduce the topic of the article?
A.By describing a scientific research process.
B.By telling a scientist's personal experience.
C.By giving an example of scientific failure.
D.By presenting a common misconception.
29.What do paragraphs 2-3 mainly talk about?
A.The challenges faced by scientists
B.The history of scientific research.
C.The methods scientists use to share results.
D.The various focuses of scientists in their research.
30.What is the author's view on healthy disagreements in science?
A.They are essential for scientific progress.
B.They create confusion and delay conclusions.
C.They indicate problems in scientific methods.
D.They often lead to the rejection of old theories.
31.Why does the author mention Jean Baptiste Perrin's experiments and the subsequent debate?
A.To show science is a collection of facts.
B.To prove scientific knowledge is always absolute.
C.To illustrate science is a dynamic and evolving process.
D.To show scientific conclusion can be reached after discussion.

The ancient Romans are well-known for their engineering techniques, notably demonstrated
through the construction of aqueducts(高架渠)and the use of pozzolanic concrete(混凝士).The
properties of this concrete have generally been crodited to its ingredients:pozzolana (a mix of
volcanic ash)and lime )When mixed with water, the two materials can react to produce
高二英语期末试卷第5页(共10页)
strong concrete.
In 2023,a research team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)uncovered
new findings regarding the composition and mixing techniques of Roman concrete.Traditionally,
the presence of small lime clasts (in the concrete was due to poor mixing, but that did not
make sense to Admir Masic,a scientist of MIT."If the Romans put so much effort into making an
outstanding construction material, following all of the detailed recipes that had been optimized
over the course of many centuries, why would they put so little effort into ensuring the production
of a well-mixed final product? There has to be more to this story."
To investigate further,Masic and the team analyzed ancient concrete samples from
Privemum,Italy, using advanced imaging techniques.Their findings challenge the conventional
belief that slaked lime (was the primary ingredient.Instead,it appears that the Romans
may have used quicklime (mixed directly with pozzolana and water at high temperatures,
a process termed "hot mixing".This method not only produced unique high-temperature
compounds but also accelerated curing and setting time, facilitating quicker construction.
A significant advantage of this hot mixing process is the self-healing characteristics given
by the lime clasts. When cracks develop, water seeps in and interacts with the clasts, which are
larger in surface area than surrounding particles. This reaction generates calcium-rich solutions
that harden into calcium carbonate, effectively sealing the cracks. This phenomenon has been
observed in other ancient Roman structures, reconfirming the durability of their concrete.
The MIT team conducted experiments using both ancient and modern concrete recipes with
quicklime, finding that the quicklime concrete completely healed within two wecks after cracking,
while control samples without quicklime remained damaged. With these insights, researchers aim
to develop more environmentally friendly and durable concrete options, potentially
revolutionizing modern construction practices.
32.What misconception about Roman concrete did Masic challenge?
A.Volcanic ash was the primary ingredient.
B.Ancient Roman structures were not durable
C.Presence of lime clasts indicated inadequate mixing.
D.Romans merely used volcanic ash and lime for their concrete
33.What does "hot mixing"involve?
A.Mixing materials at low temperatures.
B.Using slaked lime only in the mixture
C.Adding water to quicklime at high temperatures.
D.Combining quicklime, volcanic ash and water at high temperatures.
34.What does the research imply for modem construction praotices?
A.Lime should not be contained m modern concrete
B.Modom techniques for durability can be employed
C.Quicklime can be used to reduce construction time.
D.Sustainable and durable concrete alternatives are needed.
35.Which is the best title of the passage?
A.The Secrets of Roman Concrete
B.The Role of Engineers in Ancient Rome
C.The Importance of Aqueducts in Roman Architecture
D.Modern Construction Techniques Inspired by Ancient Rome

In today's fast-paced digital world,electronic waste,or e-waste,has become a significant
environmental concern.According to the Global E-waste Statistics Partnership (GESP),a record
53.6 million tonnes of e-waste was produced globally in 2019,increasing 21%in just five years.
By 2050,the volume of e-waste could top 120 million tonnes annually.36
The improper disposal of it poses serious threats to the environment and human health
because of the presence of harmful materials such as lead and mercury.37 It is due to their
rapidly developing bodies, including their respiratory(呼吸的),immune and central nervous
systems.
Luckily, many countries are turning to tackle the e-waste challenges. They commit to
specializing in refurbishing (electronics, making them available to consumers at a lower
cost.38 By doing so,valuable materials such as gold, silver, and copper can be extracted
from electronic devices, reducing the need for mining new resources.
Meanwhile, individuals can also contribute to e-waste disposal by being mindful of their
electronic consumption.39Support electronic manufacturers committed to green
technologies aiming for a sustainable cycle of production.Additionally,to ensure the safe and
secure disposal of all sensitive information, prioritizing data security in e-waste disposal is
necessary.
40 Do remember to reduce the environmental impacts of electronic products and share a
greener and more sustainable future.
A.It is every small action that counts.
B.Prevention and management are needed.
C.Recycling efforts have also become a key component.
D.This includes buying quality products that last longer.
E.Children and pregnant women are especially vulnerable.

December 1952 in Wisconsin, was bitterly cold.A curious 7-year-old,I was in hesitation
when my father arrived home from work with something hidden in his jacket."Guess what I have,"
He said.He slowly unwrapped the jacket to take out a frozen owl. He'd found the frozen bird on
his car when he left work and guessed that it had flown into the windshield(挡风玻璃).
Dad thought it might be alive and wanted to let it warm up.My mother agrced to let the
bird stay overnight,so Dad and I took it to the basement and carefully laid it near our coal stove.I
was the first one into the kitchen the next moming for a bowl of ccreal ()I found the owl
resting on the sugar bowl as if waiting for its breakfast.I hurried to tell my parents that the owl
was alive and sitting at the kitchen table.Mom didn't like that it was in the kitchen and wanted it
out of the house.
Dad instructed me to open the back door while he forced the owl toward me.I heard the
flapping of wings, but before I could direct its flights, the owl tumed around away from the cold
air coming in door and flew past me,down the stairs into the shelter of the warm basement.
Resting in the space near the top of the basement, the owl was safely beyond our reach. We tried

catch it when it became weak from hunger. But that never happened.
