When I was a little girl,I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at
home.In primary school,I learned to write using chalks.Writing seemed to be another form of
drawing.I shaped individual letters into repeating lines, which were abstract forms, delightful
but meaningless patterns.
In secondary school art was my favourite subject.Since I loved it so much I thought I was
good at it.For the art standardized()exam I had to present an oil painting.I found it
difficult,but still hoped to pass.I failed,with a low grade.I'd been over-confident.Now I'd
been declared talentless
But other channels of creativity stayed open:I went on writing poems and stories.Still,I
went to exhibitions often.I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterised as childish
doodling ()In my 30s,I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art.
However,I couldn't let myself have a go at actually doing it.Though these new friends were
abstract painters using oil paints,or were printmakers or sculptors,I took oil painting as the
taboo (high form I wasn't allowed to practice.
高二英语第4页(共12页)
One night,in my early 40s,I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me,handed me
a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so convincing that it shook me.It
was a form of energy, giving me back something I'd lost.Accordingly,I started by experimenting
with water colours. Finally,I bought some oil paints.
Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades-long taboo about working with oil paints,I
have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink.I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to
friends. It all feels free and easy.Un-anxious.This time around,I can accept my limitations but
keep going.
Becoming a successful painter calls for being determined.I realised I was always afraid of
wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to
take risks and make experiments.
24.What did the author think of her drawing before the standardised exam?
A.Discouraging.
B.Meaningless
C.Satisfying.
D.Empowering.
25.In her 30s,the author
A.avoided oil painting practice
B.searched for a painting career
C.took oil painting seriously
D.began water colours as a hobby
26.What attracted the author to oil paintings at last?
A.Her ambition.B.Her dream.
C.Her grade.
D.Her taboo.
27.What can we learn from this passage?
A.Practice makes perfect.
B.It never rains but it pours.
C.Dreams are the reflections of realities.
D.Strong will can move mountains.

Exciting as it may sound, the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust warns applicants that the jobs
are not for the weak-hearted.Even during summer, temperatures on the icy continent can drop
as low as-5C.Additionally,the five people will live in asingle bedroom with a tiny gas-powered
kitchen. They will use a camping toilet, which must be emptied daily.
There is limited phone and Internet access and no running water.Visiting ships offer workers
showers every few days. But in poor weather conditions, they may have to do without a shower
for extended periods.Emergency medical services could take up to a week! However, the biggest
challenge will be the smell of penguin waste that will surround them for five months!
Despite these difficulties, the positions, which open up every summer, receive thousands
of applications each year.Camilla Nichol,the Trust's CEO,is not surprised.She believes that
for the right individuals, the jobs provide a unique opportunity to live in a landscape that makes
people feel the beauty and power of nature.

A research team co-led by a physician-scientist at the University of Arizona College of
Medicine-Tucson's Sarver Heart Center found that a group of artificial heart patients can
regenerate heart muscle, which may open the door to new ways to treat and perhaps someday
cure heart failure.
高二英语第6页(共12页)
According to official statistics, heart failure affects nearly 7 million U.S.adults and is
responsible for 14%of deaths per year. The only treatment for advanced heart failure, other
than a transplant,is pump replacement through an artificial heart, called a left ventricular(
assist device, which can help the heart pump blood.
Sadek led a collaboration between international experts to investigate whether heart
muscles can regenerate. The project began with tissue from artificial heart patients provided by
colleagues at the University of Utah Health and School of Medicine. The investigators found
that patients with artificial hearts regenerated muscle cells at more than six times the rate of
healthy hearts.
"This is the strongest evidence we have,so far, that human heart muscle cells can actually
regenerate, which really is exciting, because it strengthens the thought that there is an intrinsic
capacity of the human heart to regenerate naturally,"Sadek said."It also strongly supports the
view that the inability of the heart muscle to'rest'is a major driver of the heart's lost ability to
regenerate shortly after birth.""It's not clear why some patients respond and some don't,but it'
s very clear that the ones who respond have the ability to regenerate heart muscle,"he said."The
exciting part now is to determine how we can make everyone a responder, because if you can,
you can essentially cure heart failure. The beauty of this is that a mechanical heart is not a
therapy we hope to deliver to our patients in the future-these devices are tried and true, and
we've been using them for years."
Next,Sadek wants to figure out why only about 25%of patients are "responders"to artificial
hearts, meaning that their heart muscle regenerates.
32.What is the significance of the new finding according to the first paragraph?
A.To help doctors implant artificial hearts in operations.
B.To assist researchers to develop artificial heart muscle.
C.To help find approaches to treating and even curing heart failure.
D.To assist scientists to find new ways to regenerate heart muscle.
33.What is the only treatment for advanced heart failure besides a transplant?
A.To implant an artificial heart to replace pump
B.To help the heart pump blood through the body
C.To regenerate the heart muscle by taking medicine
D.To replace patients'hearts with real human hearts.
高二英语第7页(共12页)
34.What does the underlined word"intrinsic"in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Endangered.
B.Acquired.
C.Inborn.
D.Implanted.
35.What will Sadek study next?
A.To figure out why the human heart fails to rest.
B.To develop a new artificial heart for"responders".
C.To find the best cure for heart failure for"responders".
D.To work out why heart muscle regenerates merely in some patients

I’m more than proud to introduce the festival to you. It’s a great time for people to get together, enjoying delicious food and exchanging their own experiences with beloved ones. From Egypt in Africa to Brazil in South America, and from the Empire State Building in New York to the Sydney Opera House, the Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese Lunar New Year has started a “Chinese Wind” across the globe.
Eager to spend the coming festival with you.

Surprisingly, the next sound was the front doorbell. Being prepared for a sea of criticism, I opened the door slowly and turned on the light with apologies ready. To my great surprise, in the light snow stood a girl, a neighbor from several streets away. With a small familiar object in her gloved hand, she grinned from ear to ear. “Sorry about all the noise, but I had to depend on the remote control in your key fob to find your home,” she explained. “Oh, my goodness! My keys!” I cried. She handed the keys over, the heart sparkling.
Thrilled and amazed, I took the keys in my hands. What a clever neighbor and how timely the help! “Thank you so much. You really saved me from a huge trouble,” I said, feeling an overwhelming sense of appreciation. With a simple “Glad I could help.”, she stepped towards the door and waved goodbye. The snow was still blanketing the ground, but my heart was swelling with warmth. Sometimes, what warms our heart is just a warm-hearted and clever neighbor.

10.【原文】M: My mom has always told my sister and me to help others. One day last week I was walking back to my home and I passed by an old lady who seemed to be in trouble. I turned back and asked if she was OK. She explained that she was sick and had to struggle to walk with her shopping bags. I offered to carry her things and walked her back home, but she refused because she didn’t want to give me any trouble. I told her it didn’t matter and her home was on my way home. It was a white lie. As I walked with her, she talked with me and introduced herself. I in turn told her my name. She asked if I knew Ray Robert. I was shocked and said yes, that was my dad. It turned out that this lady was my dad’s neighbour who had looked after my dad and his sisters when their mother died thirty years ago. My dad often spoke of her but I had never met her as she had moved away with her family. It was a lovely moment for both of us. When I got home and told my dad about the incident, it made him cry. I was so moved. I am glad that my small active kindness ended in a chance meeting that meant so much to the two people.
