B The life of a premature (早产的) baby born during the winter storm in Texas was saved thanks to a team of medical professionals, including a doctor and two nurses who travelled from East Austin to Marble Falls in an effort to save a newborn baby’s life. When Arias began experiencing pains, she and her parents headed to the closest hospital, Baylor Scott & White. Arias gave birth to her daughter, Zaylynn, who weighed just over one pound and was in need of advanced special care. However, the hospital does not offer the specialized care premature babies require. “We had five or six people out at the nurses’ station calling hospital networks all over the state of Texas,” said Meredith Schubert, the labor and delivery nurse on duty when Arias arrived. “Nobody could answer our cry for help.” They finally reached Dr. John Loyd through a patient, division neonatologist (新生儿学专家) chief at Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, Texas. Around 5 p.m., after already having worked a full shift, Loyd packed his SUV with equipment and he and two nurses set out for Marble Falls, about 55 miles away. The drive took Loyd and the nurses about two hours as they drove in the night through ice and snow. After safely arriving at the medical center in Marble Falls around 8 p.m., the Dell Children’s crew set up a temporary newborn ICU. Together, the Dell Children’s and Baylor Scott & White teams worked around the clock to care for the mother and daughter. Once the weather cleared enough to allow for a helicopter to safely land, Zaylynn was transferred to Dell Children’s, where there is a Level IV newborn ICU. Schubert said, “It was a huge relief and a sense of accomplishment and joy that Zaylynn finally got to the place where she needed to be.” Arias said that she was grateful to the doctors and nurses who worked together to save her daughter. 4. What did the newborn baby need badly? A. Famous hospitals. B. Experienced doctors. C. Special intensive care. D. Professional operations. 5. What do we know about the nurses’ call for help before reaching Loyd? A. No reply was received at first. B. First aid was put off because of it. C. It wasn’t sent out for the heavy snow. D. A medical team came to their help as a result. 6. What was the most touching part about Loyd? A. He came with all the necessary equipment. B. He tried his best to maintain his honor. C. He had enough bravery to drive at night. D He drove to rescue at night in severe weather. 7. What made the doctors and nurses feel a sense of relief? A. The fine weather. B. The baby’s improvement. C. The take-off of the helicopter. D. The baby’s arrival at Dell Children’s. C From a young age, Barbara Binns’s passions were reading and doing research. With her latest book, Unlawful Orders, a biography, she captures American history. Unlawful Orders tells the story of James Williams (1919-2016), a doctor who served with the Tuskegee Airmen, the first Black military pilots, during World War II. While at the Freeman Airfield base in Iowa, he stood up to racial unfair practices through peaceful protest, which pushed the government to make some changes in the US army. Binns lives in Chicago, Illinois, where she grew up and where most of her stories took place. In 2008, she wrote several books for young readers. She found her current book’s subject while researching James’s mother, Clara Williams, for another project. James had also lived in Chicago, in a neighborhood not far from where Binns grew up, but she hadn’t heard about him. “I found myself wondering if I ever walked past him on the street and didn’t realize I was in the presence of greatness,” Binns told The Week Junior. She said she would have loved to have him as a role model during her childhood. That’s one reason why she wrote Unlawful Orders, she said — for children who need a hero, someone who looks ordinary but did extraordinary things through quiet but persistent actions. 8. What can be known about James Williams? A. He once served as an American pilot. B. He fought for equal rights for the black people. C. He lived in the same neighborhood with Binns. D. He got the support from American government. 9. Which of the following words can best replace the underlined words in Paragraph 2? A. Put aside. B. Settled for. C. Objected to. D. Referred to. 10. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. How Binns chose the subject for Unlawful Orders. B. How Binos got to know James Williams. C. Why Binns gave up researching Clara Williams. D. Why Binns chose Chicago to be the setting for her books. 11. Why did Binns write Unlawful Orders? A. To motivate herself to become a hero. B. To be in memory of James Williams. C. To inspire the children. D. To record American history. D Plastic—Eating Worm Humans produce more than 300 million tons of plastic every year. Almost half of that ends up in landfills(垃圾填埋场) , and up to 12 million tons pollute the oceans. So far there is no effective way to get rid of it, but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the stomachs of some hungry worms(幼虫). Researchers in Spain and England found that the worms of the greater wax moth(大蜡螟) can break down polyethylene(聚乙烯), which accounts for 40% of plastics. That is to say part of plastics can be consumed by this kind of worms. The team left 100 wax worms on a plastic shopping bag for 12 hours, and the worms consumed and broke down about 92 milligrams, or almost 3% of it. To confirm that the worms' chewing alone was not responsible for the polyethylene breakdown, the researchers made some worms into paste(糊状物)and applied it to plastic films. 14 hours later the films had lost 13% of their mass—apparently broken down by enzymes(酶)from the worms' stomachs. Their findings were published in Current Biology. Federica Bertocchini, co—author of the study, says the worms' ability to break down their everyday food—beeswax—also allows them to break down plastic." Wax is a complex mixture, but the basic bond in polyethylene, the carbon—carbon bond, is there as well," she explains. "The wax worm developed a method or system to break this bond." Jennifer Debruyn, a microbiologist at the University of Tennessee, who was not involved in the study, says it is not surprising that such worms can break down polyethylene. But compared with previous studies, she finds the speed of breaking down in this one exciting. The next step, DeBruyn says, will be to identify where the enzyme comes from. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes(肠道微生物)? Bertocchini agrees and hopes her team's findings might one day help make use of the enzyme to break down plastics in landfills. But she expects using the chemical in some kind of industrial process—not simply "millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic." 12. What can we learn about the worms in the study? A. They take plastics as their everyday food. B. They can consume plastics. C. They end up in landfills. D. They are new creatures. 13. According to Jennifer DeBruyn, the next step of the study is to ________. A. prove the research findings B. discover other kinds of worms C. increase the breakdown speed D. find out the source of the enzyme 14. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the chemical might ________. A. help to raise worms B. help make plastic bags C be used to clean the oceans D. be produced in factories in future 15. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To propose new means to keep eco—balance. B. To present a way to break down plastics. C. To introduce the diet of a special worm. D. To explain a study method on worms. Owning a pet is a fun and rewarding experience. It was set back from the road by a long, winding driveway, and the yard was filled with so many pine trees that she couldn't see any of the neighbors' lights. On this particular night, the snow was falling heavily outside. The girls begged her to read them their favorite story, and afterward they fell asleep. Megan settled on the sofa to watch an old movie on television. Around ten o'clock, a loud knock on the door surprised her. Megan spied through the peephole(窥视孔)and saw a middle-aged man standing in the entryway. "Who is it?" she asked. "Your brother Ben." Megan realized the man had mistaken her for his sister. She replied, "Mrs. Quinn can't come to the door right now. "She thought of her mother's warming: Never open the door for a stranger while you' re babysitting. "The truth is I'm babysitting," she said through the screen. The words were out of her mouth before she remembered her mother's second warning: Don't advertise that you're alone. Megan quickly added, "Mrs. Quinn will be home soon.” "It's awfully cold out here. Can I wait inside?" The man asked. Megan hesitated. "Couldn't you come back in a little while?" "I drove all the way from Newport. I don't have anywhere else to go." The man smiled. "Please let me in. I promise I won't bother you." "Mrs. Quinn left a number for me to contact her," Megan said. "I'll call her and see what she says." The smile disappeared from the man's face. "You're going to leave me outside to freeze to death in the meantime? Wait until she finds out you wouldn't let me in! You'll be in so much trouble!" With the words he left. Megan trembled. Maybe it was true. Maybe she would get in trouble. What if Mrs. Quinn asked her why she didn't let her brother in? How could Megan explain that he was absolutely rude? Would Mrs. Quinn think she was not mature enough to babysit? Maybe she'd never call her again. 注意:1.续写的词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 A little after eleven, Mrs. Quinn came back. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mrs. Quinn frowned. D. He drove to rescue at night in severe weather. 7. What made the doctors and nurses feel a sense of relief? A. The fine weather. B. The baby’s improvement. C. The take-off of the helicopter. D. The baby’s arrival at Dell Children’s. 【答案】4. C 5. A 6. D 7. 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了书籍Unlawful Orders的故事梗概和Barbara Binns的写作初衷。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。由第二段中的“While at the Freeman Airfield base in Iowa, he stood up to racial unfair practices through peaceful protest, which pushed the government to make some changes in the US army. 故选A项。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。由最后一段“That’s one reason why she wrote Unlawful Orders, she said — for children who need a hero, someone who looks ordinary but did extraordinary things through quiet but persistent actions. (她说,这就是她写Unlawful Orders的原因之一,是为了那些需要英雄的孩子,一个看起来很普通但通过安静但坚持不懈的行动做了非凡事情的人)”可知,Binns要写Unlawful Orders是因为她想激励孩子们。故选C项。 D Plastic—Eating Worm Humans produce more than 300 million tons of plastic every year. That is to say, part of plastics can be consumed by this kind of worms. A. help to raise worms B. help make plastic bags C. be used to clean the oceans D. be produced in factories in future 15. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To propose new means to keep eco—balance. B. To present a way to break down plastics. C. To introduce the diet of a special worm. D. To explain a study method on worms. 【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. B 【解析】 【分析】本文是说明文,作者介绍了一项科学发现:一种吃塑料的虫子—大蜡螟,它胃中的酶能够降解塑料,从而为人们解决塑料污染问题提供新的途径。 12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Researchers in Spain and England found that the worms of the greater wax moth(大蜡螟) can break down polyethylene(聚乙烯),which accounts for 40% of plastics.”(西班牙和英国的研究人员发现,大蜡蛾的蠕虫可以分解占塑料40%的聚乙烯。)可知研究人员发现大蜡螟蠕虫能够分解塑料,显然也可以分解垃圾中的塑料,与B项的 “消耗塑料”吻合,故选B项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段“The next step, DeBruyn says, will be to identify where the enzyme comes from. Is it an enzyme produced by the worm itself or by its gut microbes(肠道微生物)?” (DeBruyn说,下一步将是确定酶的来源。它是蠕虫本身产生的酶还是它的肠道微生物产生的酶? )可知,接下来人们需要证实的是酶是从哪里产生的,D项“查明酶的来源”与此吻合。故选D项。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“But she expects using the chemical in some kind of industrial process—not simply "millions of worms thrown on top of the plastic."” (但她希望在某种工业过程中使用这种化学物质,而不是简单地“把数百万只虫子扔在塑料上”)可推知,研究人员期望在某种工业流程中使用这种化学制品,而不仅仅是把数百万的虫子扔到塑料上。这与选项D中提到的 “今后工厂可能生产这种化学制品”吻合,故选D项。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章的主要内容,结合第二段“Researchers in Spain and England found that the worms of the greater wax moth(大蜡螟) can break down polyethylene(聚乙烯),which accounts for 40% of plastics.”(西班牙和英国的研究人员发现,大蜡蛾的蠕虫可以分解占塑料40%的聚乙烯)可知,作者通过本文介绍了一项消除塑料垃圾的研究,显然是为了人们提供了一条清除塑料垃圾的新途径。故选C项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Owning a pet is a fun and rewarding experience. But every animal and their needs are different, so how can you make sure that you choose the right one for yourself? Here are some top tips from national pet charity Blue Cross. Do your research You may like the look of a particular pet but that doesn’t mean they’re right for you. ____16____ . So, think carefully about what you want from your pet and do some research before you take one on. Some pets may also require more vet care than others. Take French bulldogs and pugs for example, they can suffer many health issues over their lifetime, including problems with their breathing and skin conditions due to their exaggerated features. ____17____ ____18____ For example, if you work full time and you want a dog, who would take care of them during the day? If you want a cat, will they have access to outside space while you’re out during the day? Familiarize yourself with the size and exercise requirements of different pets to make sure they’re the right choice for you. Do your sums From everyday things like insurance, food and toys to unexpected vet bills, having a pet is certainly a financial commitment. ____19____. Make sure you factor in how much your new pet will cost before you choose them. Use a reliable breeder (饲养员) If you do want to buy a dog or cat, ask a vet or breed club to recommend a responsible breeder. Ask the breeder for all the relative paperwork and see the pet’s parents or relatives to observe their temper, general health and welfare. ____20____ Because these may well turn out to be puppy farmers or commercial dealers who have little interest in the welfare of the pets they sell. A. Charities can offer support and advice about individual pets B. Think about your lifestyle C. Don’t throw yourself into the financial trouble D. Adjust your taste E. Don’t purchase online or from dealers who offer multiple types of pets F. We’d advise owners to really do their research before taking on one of these pets G. Every pet has its own personality and some often have strong characters 【答案】16. G 17. F 18. B 19. C 20. E 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是选择适合自己的宠物的方法。 【16题详解】 空前说“You may like the look of a particular pet but that doesn’t mean they’re right for you.(你可能喜欢某只宠物的样子,但这并不意味着它们就适合你。)”,空后说“So, think carefully about what you want from your pet and do some research before you take one on. Some pets may also require more vet care than others.(所以,仔细想想你想从你的宠物身上得到什么,在你养宠物之前做一些研究。有些宠物可能比其他宠物需要更多的兽医护理。)”,因此空格处应该说每种宠物都不一样,都有自己的特点,G选项“Every pet has its own personality and some often have strong characters(每只宠物都有自己的个性,有些往往有很强的性格)”说明了宠物各有不同,所以需要在选择前研究一番,因此G选项承上启下,符合语境,故选G。 【17题详解】 空前说“Take French bulldogs and pugs for example, they can suffer many health issues over their lifetime, including problems with their breathing and skin conditions due to their exaggerated features.(以法国斗牛犬和哈巴狗为例,它们在一生中会遭受许多健康问题,包括由于它们夸张的特征而导致的呼吸和皮肤问题。)”,因此养这种狗需要慎重,需要在养之前仔细研究清楚,F选项“We’d advise owners to really do their research before taking on one of these pets(我们建议主人们在养这些宠物之前好好研究一下)”说明了在养这种宠物前要研究,其中的“do their research”和本段小标题“Do your research”相一致,“these pets”指代空前的“French bulldogs and pugs”,因此F选项承接上文,符合语境,故选F。 【18题详解】 空格处是本段小标题,由空后的“For example, if you work full time and you want a dog, who would take care of them during the day? If you want a cat, will they have access to outside space while you’re out during the day?(例如,如果你有全职工作,想要一只狗,谁会在白天照顾它们呢?如果你想要一只猫,当你白天在外面的时候,它们能去外面的空间吗?)”可知,本段主要讲的是要考虑好自己的生活方式,B选项“Think about your lifestyle(想想你的生活方式)”概括了本段主要内容,可作为小标题,故选B。 【19题详解】 空前说“From everyday things like insurance, food and toys to unexpected vet bills, having a pet is certainly a financial commitment.(从保险、食物、玩具等日常开销到意想不到的兽医账单,养宠物当然是一项经济承诺。)”,空后说“Make sure you factor in how much your new pet will cost before you choose them.(在你选择新宠物之前,一定要考虑到它们的价格。)”,因此空格处应该说要考虑好养狗所带来的经济负担,不要让自己陷入经济困难,C选项“Don’t throw yourself into the financial trouble(不要让自己陷入经济困境)”符合语境,故选C。 【20题详解】 空前说“If you do want to buy a dog or cat, ask a vet or breed club to recommend a responsible breeder. Ask the breeder for all the relative paperwork and see the pet’s parents or relatives to observe their temper, general health and welfare.(如果你真的想买一只狗或猫,让兽医或品种俱乐部推荐一位负责任的饲养员。向饲养员索要所有相关文件,并去看宠物的父母或亲戚,观察它们的脾气、总体健康状况和福利状况。)”,空后说“Because these may well tum out to be puppy farmers or commercial dealers who have little interest in the welfare of the pets they sell.(因为这些人很可能是小狗饲养者或商业商人,他们对自己出售的宠物的福利不感兴趣。)”,因此空格处应该会提到某种不能买的宠物,E选项“Don’t purchase online or from dealers who offer multiple types of pets(不要在网上或从提供多种宠物的经销商那里购买)”提出了不应该买的宠物,因此承上启下,符合语境,故选E。 第三部分 语言运用 (共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 I started collecting shopping lists around 1997. She replied "Mrs. A little after eleven, Mrs. Quinn came back. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mrs. Quinn frowned. After sitting down on the sofa, she asked Megan how everything was going when she was away. Megan felt so nervous that she was at a loss for words. Finally, she summoned up the courage to tell Mrs. Quinn what had happened. “I didn’t have any problems with the girls. But later your brother came to the door. When I told him I wasn’t going to open the door, he got really angry with me and left. I’m terribly sorry.” Mrs. Quinn frowned. “My brother? I don’t have a brother!” Megan was proud of herself for following her heart and making a wise choice. She had kept Mrs. Quinn’s kids—and herself—safe that night. Feeling surprised and relieved, Mrs. Quinn praised Megan for her keeping calm in the face of danger. “You are amazing. I should thank you for your great job!” Mrs. Quinn said happily. 词汇激活 行为类 ①回来:came/return/turn/back ②称赞:praise/applaud/commend 情绪类 ①感谢:thank sb for/showing one’s appreciation/show one’s gratitude/be grateful ②紧张的说不出话:so nervous that sb be at a loss for words/too nervous to say something 【点睛】 [高分句型1].
