Here is his personal list of the best reads. Travels With a Donkey in the Cévennes Robert Stevenson It is one of the first travel books I have read, which takes me on a walking journey with Robert and his donkey (驴) Mosestine across a mountainous region of France. I get to feel what traveling through 1870’s Europe was like. Robert and his donkey don’t get along well at first, but they finally learn to become travel companions. World Walk Steven Newman World Walk is the story of newspaper writer Steven Newman who packed his bag at the age of 28 to start a four year-long journey around the world on foot. He walked his way across 22 countries in five co6d heartfelt stories of the people he met along the way, as well as wild adventures A lesson of hope and love is told through the exciting backpacking. On the Road Jack Kerouac On the Road is a classic American travel book. The story, which is based on Kerouac himself, tells us about Dean Moriarty’s cross-country journey across America in the 1940’s. A great read for those who would like to escape the real world for a while and just go where the wind blows them. The Cat Who Went to Paris Peter Gethers For someone who expects to experience life-changing wonders that await abroad, there’s perhaps no better resource (资源) than The Cat Who Went to Paris. Steven Newman. D. Jack Kerouac. 2. Which book tells about travels in America? A. World Walk. B. On the Road. C. The Cat Who Went to Paris. D. Travels With a Donkey in the Cévennes. 3 What do the works by Stevenson and Gethers have in common? A. They are based on the same experience. B. They show a useful skill in raising cats. C. They are about a journey with an animal. D. They focus on a love story in Europe. B Emma Chen, from the United States, works as a volunteer in Hangzhou’s Liangzhu Museum, Zhejiang province. The museum was built in 2005 and shows the archaeological findings from the Liangzhu ruins. What has caught Chen’s attention the most is a ring-footed black pottery jar (陶罐) that has 12 symbols. Some experts feel it tells a story. “It says that a man caught a tiger with a net,” Chen said. “There are many different explanations, but they were probably depicting specific activities or events, carving on a jar what had happened earlier that day, the way people these days post moments on WeChat,” she said. Chen’s deep knowledge of museums is impressive, and her love connects people across the ages. She has a special gift for making ancient history come alive and attracting visitors. Her love for Chinese history happened before she was majoring in Oriental (东方的) studies. She learned Chinese during her college days in the US, and the interest finally drove her across the Pacific Ocean. Coming to China in early 2015 after graduating, she became a member of the museum’s volunteer team in 2022. Chen said her repeated visits to the museum led to them making an offer. “I remembered a worker coming up to me and asking if I wanted to do the job. I had always wanted to do it, so I agreed immediately,” she said. “I just happened to be at the right place at the right time.” Chen has visited many museums in China, such as the Yinxu Museum in Henan province and the Sanxingdui Museum in Sichuan province. But in her eyes, Liangzhu Museum is an invaluable treasure that cannot be taken the place of because she believes every word that is written on a wall in the hall of the museum, that “Liangzhu is the most specific testimony (证明) of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization”. In 2019, the Liangzhu ruins made it to the UNESCO World Heritage List. 4. What does the underlined word “depicting” mean in paragraph 2? A. Describing. B. Carving. C. Painting. D. Acting. 5. How did Chen’s love for Chinese history influence her life? A. It made her change her major in college. B. It helped her become a professional archaeologist. C. It encouraged her to learn Chinese and finally move to China. D. It led her to work at the Liangzhu Museum at once after graduation. 6. What makes the Liangzhu Museum special to Chen? A. Its size in China. B. Its historical (历史的) value. C. Its modern design. D. Its large collections. 7. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. The Liangzhu Museum in Hangzhou. B. Different kinds of museums in China. C. An American volunteer’s determination. D. An American volunteer for a Chinese museum. C People will tell you the only way to really learn a language is to completely immerse (浸入) yourself in a country where that language is spoken. Not all language learners, of course, will have the chance to spend some time in an immersion environment. But if you can’t actually fly across the world to learn a new language, you can always create an immersion environment where you can talk to native speakers. That’s where Babbel comes in. Babbel is one of the most popular language learning apps on the market for studying new languages at your own pace. The app stresses real-life conversational skills, so you won’t be stopped by grammatical knowledge and verb patterns. And right now, you can get 15% off a lifetime subscription (订阅) to Babbel Language Learning ($150; stacksocial.com). A lifetime subscription is huge when it comes to getting the most out of the app, since you’ll be able to return to lessons time and time again and review whichever section or topic you might need. So how does it all work? First, you’ll choose one of the 14 languages. While Babbel offers familiar languages like Spanish and Italian, it also offers less commonly studied ones like Polish, Indonesian and more. Once you pick your language, you’ll choose a wide range of real-life topics. Each course takes about 10 to 15 minutes, so you can pick one up on the way to work, during your lunch break, or really at any point you have some time to kill. Beyond this, Babbel includes a ton of additional features (特色) designed to make sure you learn the language in a real, practical and correct way. The app uses speech recognition technology to make sure your pronunciation is correct compared with how native speakers would say certain words. 8. What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us? A. The amazing experiences of travelling. B. Different ways to learn a new language. C. The importance of language learning environment. D. Chances to communicate with native speakers. 9. What can we know about Babbel? A. It’s a tool for learning languages. B. It is designed in various types. C. It focuses more on grammar points. D. It’s the most popular app in the market. 10. What should the users do first to learn with the app? A. Choose the place to learn a course. B. Pick the language they want to learn. C. Schedule the reading time. D. Choose a proper topic. 11. Why does Babbel use speech recognition technology? A. To represent its additional features. B. To meet the needs of native speakers. C. To compare differences between words. D. To make the pronunciation correct. D Last September, a strange seismic signal (地震信号), lasting more than a week, attracted the attention of researchers around the world. It took 68 experts from 15 countries to discover the cause of the “USO” -Unidentified Seismic Object. The term USO is used informally by scientists for unusual seismic signals that can’t be explained, according to Kristian Svennevig, the lead author of a new report on this signal. From the start, scientists agreed this signal was not from an earthquake. Svennevig compared earthquakes to hitting piano keys with force, creating a mix of sounds that disappeared quickly. However, the unusual signal was like a single piano key producing a clear sound that lasted for nine days. Researchers tracked the signal to a huge snowslide in eastern Greenland’s Dickson fjord (峡湾), which was formed by melting (融化) ice due to climate change. Some 1.2 kilometers above the fjord, a mountaintop fell, driving more than 25 million cubic meters of rock and ice into the water-enough to fill 10,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The resulting tsunami (海啸) reached a height of 200 meters. The wave’s energy was caught in the rocky fjord, causing the water to move back and forth. This movement created the seismic signal. Svennevig noted that understanding this event took time. Even when they had ideas about what happened, they needed more information and improved models to support their findings. “We could only show that the tsunami was caught and kept moving inside the fjord for nine days after we used special army maps and improved our tsunami models,” Svennevig explained. To the researchers, the signal served as a wakeup call-similar events may happen with landfalls in other fjords or lakes due to climate change, which could lead to more landfalls and tsunamis in the Arctic. Understanding this event helps scientists learn more about how the Earth is changing due to global warming. There is still much to discover as we face the effects of climate change. 12. Why did Svennevig mention piano keys? A. To explain the strange signal. B. To introduce a musical instrument. C To compare the sounds in nature. D. To give tips on playing the piano. 13. What caused the seismic signal? A. A wildfire. B. A snowslide. C. A heavy rain. D. An earthquake. 14. What can we know from Svennevig’s words? A. It’ll take much time to receive the seismic signal. B. It’s slow for scientists to find an answer to the event. C. A group of scientists was caught in the deadly tsunami. D. The researchers will make public the recent finding soon. 15. What does the author stress in the text? A. Landfalls always happen along with tsunamis. B. Scientists should keep an open mind on opinions. C. This event may shape our view on various cultures. D The signal gives us fair warning of climate change. How to Be a Successful High School Student It may be hard during the school year, but the following steps help you become a successful school student. Sometimes, I would become very confused. Math problems that seemed to be impossible to solve, puzzling grammar in English, and difficult historical events all made me feel at a loss. I didn’t know where to start or how to improve. Moreover, the fierce competition among classmates also added to my anxiety. Seeing others doing well, I couldn’t help but question myself, wondering if I was working hard enough. This sense of uncertainty made me doubt my abilities and future. I was losing patience and drive. One sunny day, as I was sitting in the classroom feeling a bit bored, my teacher came in and announced that we would have a special project — to plant a tree in the schoolyard. I was excited at the thought of getting outside and doing something different. I went outside and started digging the hole for the tree. I worked hard, feeling the dirt on my hands and the sweat on my forehead. As I was working, a classmate, Mary, came over and said, “Hey, you’re really putting a lot of effort into this!” I smiled and replied, “Yeah, I want this tree to grow strong. It feels like we’re doing something meaningful.” Mary nodded in agreement, “Definitely. And it’s amazing to think about how we’re all part of this process of growth.” As the weeks passed, I would visit the tree often, observing the little tree as it faced many challenges, including harsh weather and strong winds. But each time, it overcame them and continued to grow taller and stronger, providing shade and shelter for us. Its journey in the wind and rain was a test of its perseverance (坚持) and growth. It made me wonder whether I could be like the tree, growing and changing. One day, as I stood by a tree lost in thought, my teacher approached me. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Reflecting on it now, I realize this conversation was a turning point in my life. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1—5 CBBAA 6—10 BACBC 11—15 CBBAB 16—20 CACAA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 静宁县2024—2025学年秋季高一期末考试 英语试题 考生注意: 1. 1.How will Susan go to Beijing probably? A It made her change her major in college. B. C. To compare the sounds in nature. D. The signal gives us fair warning of climate change. 12. A 13. B 14. B 15. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 One day, as I stood by the tree lost in thought, my teacher approached me. She asked, “What are you thinking about?” I explained my realization about the tree and how it mirrored my struggles. My teacher smiled warmly and said, “That’s exactly right. Just like the tree, you will face challenges, but you must keep growing. You need to persevere, adapt, and find strength within yourself. Remember, every difficulty you overcome makes you stronger.” Her words impressed me deeply, and I felt a renewed sense of determination. I decided then and there to approach my studies with the same persistence as the tree. Reflecting on it now, I realize this conversation was a turning point in my life. Inspired by the tree’s growth and my teacher’s encouragement, I began to tackle my academic challenges . Slowly but surely, I noticed improvements in my grades. More importantly, I learned to consider challenges as opportunities for growth. This shift in mindset not only helped me academically but also taught me a lifelong lesson about the power of perseverance and the beauty of continuous learning. Whenever I face obstacles now, I remember the tree and the wisdom it taught me, reminding me that with patience and determination, I can overcome any adversity. 词汇激活 行为类 ①解决:tackle/handle/resolve ②克服:overcome/get over/conquer ③鼓舞:inspire/encourage 情绪类 ①深深地打动了我:impress me deeply/touch me deeply ②被激励:inspired/motivated/encouraged 【点睛】 【高分句型1】Inspired by the tree’s growth and my teacher’s encouragement, I began to tackle my academic challenges.(运用了过去分词inspired 作状语) 【高分句型2】Whenever I face obstacles now, I remember the tree and the wisdom it taught me, reminding me that with patience and determination, I can overcome any adversity.(运用了whenever引导时间状语从句,省略了引导词that/which的定语从句和现在分词reminding 作结果状语以及that引导的宾语从句) 听力1—5 CBBAA 6—10 BACBC 11—15 CBBAB 16—20 CACAA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
