What's the main idea of each paragraph? 3.Find out the structure of the text. Suggested answers: 1.Exposition. 2.Para.1:Travel from east to west began long before Columbus. Para. 2: In ancient times, travel from east to west was on the Silk Road. Para.3: Zheng He's sea voyages built relations with other countries. Para. 4: The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road has encouraged cooperation and strengthened the bonds between China and the rest of the world. Para. 5: China has also joined other countries on important projects. Para. 6: China will continue to explore the sea and enhance relationships with other countries. 3.General-particular pattern. Step III Discourse analysis Teacher: Let students analyse the text through different angles. *Students: Analyse the text and supply evidence presented in the text. Para. 1 Trade and curiosity have often formed the foundation of mankind's greatest achievements. To complete the great map of the world was a strong passion for the people of early civilisations. Marco Polo's tales inspired European explorers to search for sea routes from west to east. However, merchants and explorers from the East set sail from east to west many years before Columbus first did. Guided questions: 1. What leads mankind to conduct sea exploration? 2. Who began to set sail earlier, European explorers or Asian ones? Suggested answers; 1. Trade and curiosity lead mankind to conduct sea exploration. 2.Asian explorers. Para.2 In ancient times, silk from China found its way overland to India, the Middle East, and Rome, along what became known as the Silk Road. A trading route across the sca was also cxtended along the coasts of the Indian Ocean, centred around Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Here, merchants from China and many other places met to negotiate trade deals, which also led to more awareness of cach other's cultures. Over the centuries, further trading allowed more exploration of the regions to the west of China, as recorded in Du Huan's Record of My Travels in the eighth century. Guided questions: 1. Which countries were involved in the trade along the Silk Road? 2.What benelits did those countries get? Suggested answers: 1. India, the Middle East, Rome, Sri Lanka and China. 2.They got new products from different countries and became more aware of other cultures. Para. 3 Later, the Ming Dynasty further developed relations with these regions. Between 1405 and 1433,seven large fleets sailed west on voyages of trade and exploration. These fleets were a sight to behold and were in a league of their own at that time. Under the command of Zheng He, they set sail from the South China Sea across the Indian Ocean to the mouth of the Red Sea,and then to the east coast of Africa. African royal families sent gifts such as giraffes as gestures of friendship in return for gold, silk, and spices. Although China withdrew from further expeditions after 1433, these land and sea routes remained active channels between other cultures for centuries. Guided questions: 1.Why did the Ming Dynasty send Zheng He to sail on voyages? 2.What effects did reaching out across the sea in the past have on the world? Suggested answers: 1.To show the glory of the Ming Dynasty; to promote trade; to develop relations with other countries. 2.The land and sea routes remained active channels between different cultures for centuries. Generally speaking, the result was positive, as it advanced the spread of knowledge, technology and goods and made the world a smaller place. Para.4 To reach out across the sca remains a strong desire today. The ancient sca routes travelled by Zheng He are being revisited with the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which is part of the Belt and RRoad Initiative. The aim of this initiative is to encourage cooperation and trade across the historic Silk Road areas, and strengthen the bonds between China and the rest of the world.Trading has grown greatly in recent years, and will continue to do so in years to come. China has invested billions in systems and services along these routes, which will help to greatly develop the whole area for the benefit of future trade and cultural exchange. Guided questions: 1.What is the goal of the Belt and Road Initiative? 2.Do you think it is worthwhile for China to invest much money in systems and services along the routes? Suggested answers: 1. To encourage cooperation and trade across the historic Silk Road areas, and strengthen the bonds between China and the rest of the world. 2. Yes, absolutely. Because it will help China with its future trade and cultural exchange. Paras.5&6 China has also joined its friends across the sea on other important projects. Although the ancient sea routes of Zheng He have been travelled many times, there are still many other places left to explore. In recent years,China has joined other nations on several expeditions to explore the Arctic. From a scientific point of view, there is an urgent need to study the Arctic in order to understand climate change and its effects. Hundreds of years on, and with the latest technology in hand, the need to trade and the desire to enhance relationships will drive China to reach out across the sea far into the future. Guided question: Why is there a need to study the Arctic? Suggested answer: To understand climate change and its effects. (设计意图:通过“自上而下(top-down approach)”的方式,帮助学生多层次、多角度地分析语篇传递的意义,帮助学生深刻理解语篇,把语言学习和意义探究融为一体,实现深度学习与思维品质的提升。) Step IV Critical thinking Discuss whether it is worthwhile to explore the sea. (设计意图:培养学生运用由此及彼的迁移性思维以及思辨思维的能力。) Suggested answers: Supporters' opinion: It is worthwhile for us to explore the sca. The reasons are as follows. To begin with, the sea provides mankind with all kinds of food, which can solve the problem of hunger to a certain degree. Secondly, the sea is rich in natural resources, offering mankind alternative energy. What's more, sea exploration may help human beings to understand our earth better. For example, we can know why the weather changes by studying the sea. Overall, sea exploration is of great significance to human development. Opponents' opinion: We shouldn't explore the sea. For one thing, sea exploration does damage to the sea. Many fishes and birds die owing to sea exploration. Besdes, it takes a massive amount of money to conduct sea exploration. What is worse, mining in the Arctic leads much ice to melt, which causes climate change. Humans may suffer a lot if we continue to do so. Suggested answers: 1.I am interested in the silk culture and the Belt and Road Initiative. 2. As a matter of fact, silk has a long history and is in a league of its own in China. 3. From the Han Dynasty, China opened up the Silk Road with political and economic purposes, which attracted merchants to trade by land or by sea. 4. At present, our government has put forward the Belt and Road Initiative, which becomes the bonds between China and other countries.
