After three years of studying acupuncture (针灸) and a practice in a student clinic, Izabela Wilczynska is finally on her own and applying all she has learned in treating a patient. The whole process was actually Wilczynska’s final exam in her diploma (文凭) course in Chinese acupuncture at the London Academy of Chinese Acupuncture, or LACA.
“She definitely can pass the exam,” says Han Yonggang, who helped her with the exam and who is a practicing traditional Chinese medicine, or TCM, doctor and a professor at the academy. “But I expect more from her.”
“There are differences between traditional Chinese medicine and the modern Western medical system. For example, checking the tongue is rare in Western medical practice,” says Han. “So, she must explain her treatment very well to let patients feel safe.”
Wilczynska took the acupuncture course because she had a positive experience with TCM. “It all started seven years ago, when I was very ill I had tried everything, and nothing helped me...Then somebody introduced me to Chinese medicine and said: ‘Listen, you can change your diet. You eat your food, but with Chinese principles’” she recalls. Then, she bought a book by a Polish author who was a TCM practitioner in her native Poland. And I started following her advice, which was based on Chinese medicine. It helped me within weeks and then, after a year, I was full of energy.
Wilczynska used to be a public-speaking coach but, later, she started to consider a career in TCM and found the course provided by LACA.
Wilczynska also received a gift from her professor at the academy - a book about Chinese medicinal plants and herbal drugs. ”That was actually very encouraging because he knew my dream is to be a herbalist (草药医生),” says Wilczynska. “Maybe, I will treat friends and other people at home first. And then I will open my own clinic.”
4. What can we learn about Wilczynska from the first two paragraphs?
A. She expects more from her professor.
B. She’ll graduate after passing the exam.
C. She’s taught herself acupuncture for three years.
D. She’s been eager to learn acupuncture since a young age.
5. Which of the following may Han Yonggang agree with?
A. The Chinese and Western medical systems are quite similar.
B. Checking the tongue is a common way in Western medical practice.
C. Making the Chinese medical system understood is a must for a doctor.
D. The differences between Chinese and Western patients are not obvious.
6. What does Wilczynska think of her first TCM treatment?
A. Odd. B. Effective. C. Ordinary. D. Confusing.
7. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. LACA: A Spreader of TCM
B. LACA: Top Choice for Doctors in the UK
C. Chinese Acupuncture: A Popular Course at LACA
D. Chinese Acupuncture: A Healthy Following in the UK

One of the primary benefits of AI chatbots in mental health care is their ability to provide immediate support. Traditional mental health services often require appointments, which can include long waiting periods. By contrast (相比之下), AI chatbots are available 24/7, offering support right away without being affected by the time or location. AI chatbots have a global reach, making mental health support easy to individuals in far places. This can be especially beneficial during moments of crisis and in underserved areas, providing users with immediate help and resources.
Many individuals avoid reaching out to mental health professionals due to fear of judgment or embarrassment. AI chatbots offer a private space for users to express their feelings and thoughts without fear of judgment. The nonjudgmental nature of a chatbot can make users feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings. This can lead to more honest and open conversations, important for enough mental health support.
Despite their advantages, AI chatbots have notable limitations, particularly their ability to provide detailed emotional support. Mental health issues are complex and deeply personal, often requiring a level of understanding that AI currently cannot show. While chatbots can offer support and information, they are short of the emotional intelligence to fully understand a user’s emotions and experiences. Chatbots are not able to diagnose (诊断) or treat severe mental health conditions. Depending totally on them could lead to missed diagnoses and improper treatment, failing to effectively meet the user’s needs.
Privacy (隐私) and data safety concerns are another significant challenge. Users share sensitive and personal information with these applications, and there is always a risk that this data leakage or misuse of information could have severe results for users, probably exacerbating their mental health issues.
8. What does the first paragraph mainly focus on about AI chatbots?
A. Their service areas. B. Their business hours.
C Their fast development. D. Their easy availability.
9. Why do people prefer an AI chatbot to a professional?
A. It can ease worries. B. It can offer free services.
C. It can find out their secrets. D. It can lower their expenses.
10. What does the underlined word “exacerbating” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Worsening. B. Avoiding. C. Replacing. D. Removing.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards AI chatbots in the passage?
A Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.
D
Wake up early enough and, depending on where you live, you’ll likely hear a pleasant sounds of birds, singing their tiny hearts out. This is natural behavior for birds, but why?
According to the Woodland Trust, this early singing is known as the dawn chorus, and it can start as early as 4 a.m. and last for several hours. Birds do it to attract mates and warn other birds to avoid their living habitat. One theory as to why they, in the morning, choose to communicate these important messages is because the low visibility makes it hard to do other bird activities, like looking for food. Keeping their activity level low, they sing instead.
Another theory argues that birds use the morning singing to show an image of strength. By singing, they’re letting other birds know they survived the night and would make for an excellent mate.
Like a good recording studio, the early morning hours also allow birds to send out a clear tune thanks to the cooler, drier air. Because birds have different chirps, that helps them be more easily recognized by birds within listening distance.
There used to be a popular theory that birds sang so much in the mornings because the sounds could travel greater distances due to less atmospheric flow, but it was disproven by researchers at the University of Western Ontario in 2003. They played recordings of sparrows (麻雀) at dawn and midday. The songs didn’t travel farther, but they were more consistent (一致的).
Because birds have so much energy to belt one out, singing when they stand the best chance of being heard makes sense. For a bird, an early morning period is like having the perfect environment for their performance.
12. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To give an example. B. To lead to the main topic.
C. To present a new finding. D. To draw the bird lover’s interest.
13. When may birds most probably stop singing according to the Woodland Trust?
A. 2:00 a.m. B. 4:00 a.m. C. 6:00 a.m. D. 8:00 a.m.
14. How did researchers at the University of Western Ontario reach their result?
A. By playing with sparrows. B. By recording sparrows’ songs.
C. By making some comparison tests. D. By changing the past listening ways.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why birds sing in the morning. B. Why birds try to survive the night.
C. How birds keep energetic in the day. D. How birds communicate with each other.

It was a bright and sunny Saturday morning, and Emily was filled with expectation as she prepared to ride bikes with her friends. The destination was a newly opened park in their town, a place that had gained much excitement and curiosity among the local people. Emily’s bike, a stylish black mountain bike, was her most cherished possession, one she had saved up for over several months to purchase.
Upon arriving at the park, the group was immediately attracted by its breathtaking beauty. The green trees stretched up towards the sky, with their leaves shining in the sunlight. Colorful flowers decorated the landscape, their petals (花瓣) dancing gently in the breeze. The winding paths, lined with charming scenery, waved them to explore and discover the wonders that lay within. Emily and her friends eagerly rode their bikes along these paths, their laughter echoing through the air.
However, their joy was suddenly covered by a loud noise that came from behind Emily. She swiftly turned her head to witness her friend Jack, who had unfortunately fallen off his bike and was now lying on the ground, holding his knee in obvious pain. Emily, without any delay, got off her bike and rushed to Jack’s side. Her voice, with great concern, echoed through the air as she asked, “Are you okay?”
Jack, with his face pale and tears in eyes, shook his head in response. “I think I have injured my knee,” he said, with the pain in his voice. Emily, realizing the bad situation, knew that they needed to seek help immediately. Yet, she was also aware that Jack was in no condition to walk or ride his bike.

4 What can we learn about Wilczynska from the first two paragraphs?

D. She’s been eager to learn acupuncture since a young age.

C. Making the Chinese medical system understood is a must for a doctor.
D. The differences between Chinese and Western patients are not obvious.
6. What does Wilczynska think of her first TCM treatment?

C. Their fast development.
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Indifferent.

Wake up early enough and depending on where you live, you’ll likely hear a pleasant sounds of birds, singing their tiny hearts out.

【答案】范文
Without hesitation, Emily made a quick decision. She told the other friends to stay with Jack while she rode to the park entrance to find help. Pushing her pedals with all her might, Emily sped through the paths. Her heart pounded with worry as she scanned the area for any signs of park staff. Finally, she spotted a park ranger’s office. She rushed in breathless, and explained Jack’s situation. The ranger immediately radioed for a medical team and a wheelchair.
Shortly after, the rescue arrived. The medical team quickly examined Jack’s knee, reassuring him that it wasn’t a serious injury. They carefully helped Jack into the wheelchair and wheeled him towards the park’s medical center. Emily and her friends followed closely behind. At the medical center, Jack was treated and bandaged up. His pain had subsided, and he looked at Emily with gratitude. “Thanks to you, Emily” he said. Emily smiled, and relieved that her quick thinking had helped her friend in time.
