When she knew how challenging it was for her parents, who lacked any college education, to properly manage the earnings of farming, she took it over immediately. This started a lifelong passion for finance (财务), and it led her down an unexpected path to becoming a role model she never had. Yet, such ambitions ran in obvious contrast to everything familiar to her. “I didn’t have any advisors,” Larson says. “I didn’t have anyone to look up to for a professional example. All the women I met were stay-at-home moms.” Despite having parents who couldn’t fully understand her ambitions, Larson went to the BYU Marriott School, where she earned a business degree and focused much of her coursework on international finance. Larson worked for seven years as a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual, advising clients on important financial decisions. Larson returned to BYU Marriott in 2008 to earn an MBA, and accepted a position in the school as an assistant professor following her graduation. For more than a decade, Larson has taught finance classes to undergraduate and MBA students. While she teaches finance, Larson tries to help her students see how mastering finance principles can also impact their personal lives. Constantly balancing motherhood and work, Larson makes adjustments to the way she teaches. She gave birth to her first three children in three years while teaching at BYU Marriott, wondering at times if labor might start while in front of a class full of students. At one time, Larson taught online classes from her dining room table while taking care of a newborn and other young children at home. As a female instructor in the often male-dominated finance industry, Larson works to inspire other women who seek a similar path to hers. Larson became the role model that she never had, the example that a 14-year-old girl staring at a farming expense sheet couldn't find. Now, Larson's children and students will always have that example. 41. What made Larson develop a lifelong passion for finance? A. Her experience of managing earnings of farming. B. Her strong desire for college education. C. The high expectations from her parents. D. The challenging labor on her dairy farm. 42. What problem did Larson face according to Paragraph 2? A. She had no one to ask for advice. B. She was unsure about the coursework. C. She was misunderstood by her neighbor. D. She was unfamiliar with everything at school. 43. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 3? A. Larson returned to BYU Marriott in 2018 to earn an MBA. B. Larson taught finance classes only to MBA students. C. Larson tried to control her students’ personal lives. D. Larson worked as a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual. 44. What does the underlined word “labor” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. The work of looking after a baby. B. The process of dealing with students. C. The process of giving birth to a baby. D. The work of adjusting teaching methods. 45. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Following Your Interest. B. Balancing Work and Family. C. Becoming Your Own Role Model. D. Seeking a Way to Be Successful. C It turns out that humans aren’t the only ones taking mathematics tests. A group of cognitive (认知的) scientists are training bees to perform simple addition (加法) and subtraction (减法). For the experiment, the scientists lured (诱惑) individual bees with sugar water. “She flies back to the hive, gives it to the other bees, and two minutes later she’ll come back and do it again,” Dyer said, a scientist from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. They taught and tested 14 bees over the course of the experiment — one bee at a time. To learn the rules, a bee first would be shown cards printed with a number of shapes in one of two colors: blue, if they were supposed to add one to the shapes on the card, or yellow, if they were meant to subtract one shape. Then, the bee would choose an answer to the problem by flying to one of two presented solutions. If it chose well, it found itself near a solution of delicious sugar water. If it chose poorly, however, it would be punished with a bad-tasting drink. The researchers found that each bee picked the correct answer in both addition and subtraction trials about 70 percent of the time. Dyer said, “Problem-solving requires both long-term memory and short-term memory. Long-term memory allows the bees to remember that blue and yellow equate to (等同于) separate mathematical rules. Short-term memory lets them recall the actual numbers in a particular problem.” “It’s assumed that humans are very complex, and there’s a decreasing level of complexity going away from humans,” said Muth, an animal cognition researcher who wasn’t involved in this study. But in fact, complex awareness, like the mathematical problems solved by bees, can be made up of relatively simple ways. That doesn’t explain why bees might have evolved (进化) the ability to figure out mathematical problems, though. One possibility is that bees didn’t evolve to do addition and subtraction. They just evolved to be smart enough to figure it out. Dyer said that observing a tiny animal with a brain that has less than a million neurons (神经元) learn a very complex task makes him think, “Wow, what can humans achieve?” 46. What task did the scientists set for the bees? A. Separating blue from yellow B. Figuring out different shapes. C. Learning simple mathematical rules. D. Tasting water of two flavors. 47. What role does memory play in problem-solving? A. Long-term memory plays a bigger part. B. Long-term memory contributes to recalling. C. Short-term memory is not necessary. D. Short-term memory is as important as long-term memory. 48. Which of the following statements is TRUE about bees? A. They can remember all the colors in the wild. B. Their intelligence becomes higher as they evolve. C. They experience a decreasing level of complexity. D. They are by nature good at mathematics. 49. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Human achievements can be limitless. B. Human brains deserve good study. C. Humans must fully develop neurons. D. Humans are good at observation. 50. The passage can be probably taken from ________. A. A science journal B. An advertisement C An art museum guidance D. A science fiction I used to be a selfish girl and I only thought of myself. I did not care about helping others, but only about my look, clothes, money and grades. One day, I was suddenly influenced by my neighbor, who is now in college, and ended up wanting to volunteer for others. He had so much fun with volunteering and told me that he felt extremely good after helping others. I hoped to get the same results, for I felt worthless everywhere then. I viewed almost everything in a negative way, and I figured I had to experience something that would make me appreciate things that I had. I volunteered at the nursing home for a year where my neighbor volunteered. I brought snacks, coffee and games for the elderly patients, talked to them while sharing snacks, and played games like chess and checkers with them. Because they were Koreans, they often had trouble communicating with the helpers who were hired to help them. I sometimes translated things for them and offered to be their translator whenever they needed help. By volunteering at the nursing home, I changed a lot. I realized how lucky I am to speak both Korean and English and that I should help other people learn Korean as well. I had learned many life lessons through volunteering. By helping others, I felt needed in society. Not only did it enhance my confidence, but it also allowed others to benefit from it. Volunteering is a great opportunity to improve oneself, others, and the whole society. So if you ever have the chance, volunteer! It's something you won't regret! 51. B Larson taught finance classes only to MBA students. 41. A 42. A 43. D 44. Now, Larson's children and students will always have that example.(Larson成为了她从未有过的榜样,一个14岁的女孩盯着农业支出表找不到的榜样。 C。 C It turns out that humans aren’t the only ones taking mathematics tests. Dyer said that observing a tiny animal with a brain that has less than a million neurons (神经元) learn a very complex task makes him think, “Wow, what can humans achieve?” 46 What task did the scientists set for the bees? An advertisement C. An art museum guidance D. A science fiction 【答案】46. C 47. D 48. B 49. A 50. One possibility is that bees didn’t evolve to do addition and subtraction. They just evolved to be smart enough to figure it out.(但这并不能解释为什么蜜蜂可能进化出解决数学问题的能力。 根据最后一段“Dyer said that observing a tiny animal with a brain that has less than a million neurons (神经元) learn a very complex task makes him think, “Wow, what can humans achieve?”(戴尔说,观察一只大脑少于一百万个神经元的微小动物学习一项非常复杂的任务让他思考,‘哇,人类能实现什么?’)” 故选A。 通读全文,尤其是第一段“It turns out that humans aren’t the only ones taking mathematics tests. A group of cognitive (认知的) scientists are training bees to perform simple addition (加法) and subtraction (减法).(事实证明,人类并不是唯一接受数学测试的人。 I used to be a selfish girl and I only thought of myself. 51. What kind of person was the author before volunteering? (no more than 5 words) ____________________________________________________________ 52. Why did the author want to volunteer one day? (no more than 10 words) ____________________________________________________________ 53. What did the author do when the elderly patients had difficulty in communicating with the workers?(no more than 10 words) ____________________________________________________________ 54. What does the underlined word mean in paragraph4?(one word) ____________________________________________________________ 55. What do you think of volunteering after reading the text? Please explain.(no more than 25 words) ____________________________________________________________ 【答案】51. Selfish and negative. 52. He wanted to feel good by helping others. 53. The author would offer to be their translator. 54. strengthen. 55. Participating in volunteer activities is an opportunity to improve ourselves, help others and the society, so we should take an active part in volunteer activities. 根据第一段中“I used to be a selfish girl and I only thought of myself.(我曾经是一个自私的女孩,我只考虑自己)”和第二段中“I viewed almost everything in a negative way(我几乎对每件事都持消极态度)”可知,在做志愿者之前,作者是一个自私且消极的人。故答案为:Selfish and negative. 根据第二段中“One day, I was suddenly influenced by my neighbor, who is now in college, and ended up wanting to volunteer for others. He had so much fun with volunteering and told me that he felt extremely good after helping others. I hoped to get the same results, for I felt worthless everywhere then.(有一天,我突然受到了正在上大学的邻居的影响,最后我想为别人做志愿者。 He wanted to feel good by helping others. 根据第三段中“Because they were Koreans, they often had trouble communicating with the helpers who were hired to help them. I sometimes translated things for them and offered to be their translator whenever they needed help.(由于他们是韩国人,他们经常与雇佣来帮助他们的助手沟通困难。 The author would offer to be their translator. 划线词所在段介绍了志愿者工作给作者带来的积极影响,结合划线词所在句“Not only did it enhance my confidence, but it also allowed others to benefit from it.(这不仅enhance了我的信心,也让别人从中受益)”中“my confidence”可推知,志愿者工作“增强”了作者的自信心,enhance的意思是“增强,提高”,可用strengthen来解释。 Participating in volunteer activities is an opportunity to improve ourselves, help others and the society, so we should take an active part in volunteer activities. 参考词汇:濒危动物 endangered animals; 海报poster; 东北虎the Manchurian tiger; 黑脉金斑蝶 the Monarch butterfly;苏门答腊犀牛the Sumatran rhinoceros 注意: 1. Dear Sir/Madam, I’m Li Hua, a student from Chenguang High School. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】参考范文: Dear Sir/Madam, I’m Li Hua, a student from Chenguang High School. Knowing that the Student Union will organize a poster-design competition whose theme is “Protecting the endangered animals”, I am thrilled to participate in it. Below are my descriptions about my poster. Human impact on animals has already resulted in certain species becoming endangered. As a result, I would like to design a poster so as to raise students’ awareness of protecting them. My poster consists of three parts. Speaking of the title, I have highlighted it with big words on the very top, “Helping the Manchurian tigers”, which shows the theme clearly. In the middle of my poster, I have drawn a big picture of a tiger, which lives in the Northeast China. The reason why I choose the Manchurian tigers is that their population has been decreasing dramatically in the past few years. The tigers now are under threat. We need to realize the serious situation they are facing. On each side of my poster, I have listed several measures to be taken to ensure their survival, such as building natural reserves and reinforcing international cooperation. I sincerely hope that my poster will be selected for the campus exhibition. It would be an honor to have my work displayed with the other outstanding entries and to contribute to the promotion of endangered animals’ conservation. Thank you for considering my submission. I’m looking forward to your early reply. 词汇积累 参加:participate in→take part in 影响:impact→influence 导致:result in→lead to 由……组成:consist of→be made up of 2. As a result, I would like to design a poster so as to raise students’ awareness of protecting them. As a result, I would like to design a poster which can raise students’ awareness of protecting them. 1】Knowing that the Student Union will organize a poster-design competition whose theme is “Protecting the endangered animals”, I am thrilled to participate in it. 2】Speaking of the title, I have highlighted it with big words on the very top, “Helping the Manchurian tigers”, which shows the theme clearly.(运用了which引导的非限制性定语从句) 听力 1—5 BAABB 6—10 CCBAC 11—15 BCCAB 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
