It was a long time since Hanna had visited her home village in South Africa for she and her husband Francisco settled far away. She was excited to look around beautiful painted houses, a tradition she wished they could follow at their village, leaving her concern aside. Their farming business wasn’t doing well; the soil was poor. Francisco planned to change fields — to slash (砍) and burn a new area and leave the current fields to recover. Yet Hanna feared the fallow (休耕的) fields will be the same as they were.
Farmers have been using the slash and burn method to clear forests or woods, which involves cutting down trees. They then burn the remains and use the ash (灰) to enrich the soil. In the long term, slash and burn uses more land and can cause poorer soil and climate problems.
Hanna walked up to her aunty’s house. When chatting, Hanna spoke of Francisco’s decision. “Maybe I can help you. Come outside,” Aunty said, after seeing lines of worry on Hanna’s face. Hanna walked outside, seeing sunflowers everywhere! She asked why they were there. She thought sunflowers were just weeds no one wanted. “We grow them in our fallow field. Five years ago our soil was also terrible. There was too much acid after slashing and burning. But then we noticed something — crops grew better in particular parts where there were wild sunflowers before we began farming,” her aunty explained. Hanna couldn’t believe her ears when Aunty described it. Her aunty admitted it was not easy. “But the plants do feed the field and animals and help crop production. You should try that.”
Hanna wasn’t sure, but she took sunflowers’ cuttings Aunty gave anyway. Two years later, Hanna wrote to her aunty: “Thank you for the amazing way and cuttings. The sunflowers grow wild and we use them as green nutrients before planting our corn crop. The harvest improves much! I want to thank you and let more people know this message. So I’ve painted our house with yellow sunflowers with the children. And they have learned about our old tradition. Now I feel connected to my home village!”
24. Why did Hanna worry about Francisco’s decision?
A. It could lead to a poor harvest. B. It risked the loss of their fields.
C. It would cause bad soil conditions. D. It might not improve their land.
25. What do we know about the slash and burn method?
A. It has a complicated history. B. It’s a double-edged weapon.
C. It takes years to complete. D. It’s popular in South Africa.
26. What shocked Hanna?
A. The success in growing sunflowers. B. The influence of slash and burn.
C The use of once-unwanted sunflowers. D. The disappearance of acid in the soil.
27. What does Hanna plan to do?
A. Spread the new farming method. B. Teach her kids about her home village.
C Plant sunflowers as their main crop. D. Follow the tradition of house painting.

Who’s responsible for roadside rubbish?
New research reveals that items in litter typically originate less than two miles from where they’re found — and unless humans remove them, most of these items will never leave the environment.
For the study, researchers spent a month collecting trash (垃圾) from seven sites across the Inland Empire. They examined its composition, and thanks to receipts, were also able to determine where the items were purchased. Most trash items end up on streets only a short distance from where someone bought them. In other words, the majority of litter comes from local sources. This finding could help cities prevent plastic litter that will eventually pollute water and air.
“A lot of people say it’s not their trash,” said Win Cowger, the first author of the study. “I want to refute that belief with the evidence we have, at least here in the Inland Empire.” Some people have theorized that wind, water or other factors such as feeding dogs or birds, even casual garbage trucks are responsible for moving litter through urban areas. “Our study was the first of its kind to study local litter in such close detail and identified that humans were the primary means by which it moves from sellers to streets,” added Win Cowger.
To reach these conclusions, 18 undergraduate and graduate students trained in data collection surveyed up to 3,280 feet of roadside several times a week in Riverside. Nearly 60 percent of the materials they found were plastic. Most were food related, followed by tobacco products.
Because people are responsible for the flow of items from stores onto streets, it can be easy to blame bad behavior for litter. However, the researchers feel individuals, policy makers, and manufacturers (生产商) must all work together to solve the problem.
“There has been a lot of emphasis on individual human behavior as the way to decrease rates of littering,” said Win Cowger. “In reality, it’s just as easy or even more accurate to say that if we didn’t produce the stuff in the first place, it wouldn’t get into the environment. It should not come as a shock that simply consuming less or even not consuming is also better for the planet. After all, every new item a factory pumps out requires some resources to produce.”
28. How did the researchers come to their conclusion?
A. By filling in questionnaires. B. By using mathematical models.
C. By conducting field surveys. D. By researching into previous data.
29. What does the underlined word “refute” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Contradict. B. Ignore. C. Challenge. D. Confirm.
30. What are mainly to blame for moving litter in cities?
A. Natural causes. B. Policy makers.
C. Careless producers. D. Local consumers.
31. Which of the following may Win Cowger agree with?
A. Governments should make overall arrangements.
B. Products should be manufactured as little as possible.
C. The public should behave themselves environmentally.
D. Litter should be kept from getting into the environment.
D
Nostalgia (怀旧), or the experience of lovingly recalling and longing for your past, is seemingly fitting into our culture right now, with movie and TV screens especially expanded. On its surface, it seems simple: picturing fond feelings from our past just makes us feel good. But there’s a lot more going on.
In the recent research, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences asked study participants to rate their level of pain from heat stimulation (刺激) while looking at pictures that were nostalgic-showing images of old cartoons, childhood games or candy-compared with another group of people who were given with modern pictures.
During the tasks, a machine examined the 34 participants. After obtaining brain scans, researchers found that observing pictures that activated childhood memories was linked to participants reporting weaker feelings of pain. By managing their discomfort, rather than reducing the unpleasant stimuli, people can use nostalgia to rebuild their painful experiences.
But Swets, another nostalgia expert, warned that using nostalgia for pain relief might not be a blanket solution for everyone. He highlights that nostalgia is a personal emotional experience that varies in terms of frequency and intensity. “What nostalgia is the feeling of connectedness with other people,” Swets said, noting that the clues in many studies are designed to make people think of good times with family and friends. “So, people who are a little more avoidant of intimate (亲密的) relationship with other people, or more likely to prefer distance don’t get the same results of nostalgia.” As with other positive psychology interventions, the impacts can depend on the person.
The researchers involved in the studies also have plans to use different age groups in future research to look into the impacts of more personal nostalgic clues rather than common nostalgia ones such as old music and movies.
32. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A. Heat resistance. B. Anxiety level.
C. Childhood experience. D. Picture cues.
33. What does the research find about nostalgia?
A. It reduces bad stimuli. B. It makes brain active.
C. It relieves one’s pain. D. It reshapes one’s past memory.
34. What does Swets say about nostalgia?
A. It’s a good way to recall fine times. B. It’s a universal solution to pain relief.
C. Its effect is influenced by relationships. D. Its form is similar to other interventions.
35. What will the follow-up study focus on?
A. Nostalgic experience types. B. Personal nostalgia effects.
C. The impact of nostalgia on all age groups. D. The reason for the popularity of nostalgia.

Another school year was beginning. I had thirteen excited first graders eager to learn and ready to fill my classroom with laughs, tears, and everything. I realized that I had a small class size and got excited about the special projects we could do. One project that I had been particularly interested in was finding a doctor in Doctors Without Borders as a pen pal for my students, which could definitely broaden my students’ horizons.
I began by sending out an e-mail to our school district employees asking for names and contact information of any doctor in Doctors Without Borders which they knew of. I sent an e-mail to each one asking if we could communicate with them, but only one reply came: Dr. Denisar, who was in Africa for humanitarian medical work. Since six-year-olds’ attention spans were short and many of the students were just learning how to read and write, I thought it would be the best to correspond through e-mail. Dr. Denisar quickly became a reward system. If students practiced and could read a book fluently, I would record it and e-mail it. If they finished a writing assignment, I would scan it and e-mail it. If students were misbehaving, I caught myself saying, “What would Dr. Denisar think about that?”
We also used the information Dr. Denisar included in his e-mails as learning opportunities. As we communicated with him, we learned more about him, as well as his missions from disease outbreaks to malnutrition of the locals. We started to lighten things up by recording songs and jokes, and sending art projects and care packages. He appreciated the communication. After Dr. Denisar returned, we continued to communicate with him, as my students had got quite attached. He promised that he would make a trip to our small town in Illinois to meet my class when he could.
The school year was beginning to wrap up when he contacted me in April about coming up to visit in May. For the first time, we began talking on the phone about his visit.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
As the day of his visit approached, the kids began to get nervous.

It was placed at an angle that reflected light so badly that it was hard to see the instructions on it clearly.

16. What does the woman dislike doing about her present job?
A. Interviewing clients. B. Tasting food. C. Writing a report.
A 14. B 15. A 16. B
M: Jane, why did you choose to major in home economics at Eastern Illinois University?
W: Some of my friends studied home economics. They wanted me to go to the same university as them, rather than going to Eastern Illinois University. If I’d done that, I could have shared a flat with them, but being close to home appealed to me most.
M: Did you enjoy the course?
W: Yes. I learned a lot about things like food tasting. We had to taste a dish and try to judge whether the public would like it. As the training got more complex, it became harder to be in agreement and there were even some tense moments. But it was worth it in the end.
M: What was your first job?
W: I worked for a large food company. They sent me to work in Denmark for two years. I was invited to visit local food companies. I met lots of people there, and they’ve helped me and taught me loads. I’m still in touch with them. All these influenced my work.
M: Do you enjoy your present job?
W: Well, I have to interview clients to find out about their preference and understand what they need. I taste food to make a judgement about its quality, but I don’t like it, and then there are reports to write, which some people hate but I never mind.

A visit to London Zoo is much more than just a walk around it to see great shows. Our history tour is a fantastic addition to a trip to the zoo. You will walk through the zoo with a guide, hear stories of how the zoo inspired Charles Darwin’s amazing work and discover the history of many historic buildings there. The tour takes place on Friday and Saturday mornings and it’s important to make advance bookings. The program will begin with a welcome talk at 10:15 am. You should meet at the main entrance. It is important not to be late as the tour starts at 10:30 am. The guided walking tour ends at 11:15 am. Then you will have the rest of the day to explore the zoo by yourselves. The tour costs 5 pounds per person. Instead of coming to the ticket office, bookings can be made by phone, and I recommend booking online. We also offer private bookings to groups of up to 20 people. The cost for a private group tour is 80 pounds. If you cancel your booking over 14 days before the tour date, you will be able to get all your money back. But if you cancel your booking later than that, you can only get half of your money back.

C. The use of once-unwanted sunflowers. D. The disappearance of acid in the soil.
27. What does Hanna plan to do?
A. Spread the new farming method. B. Teach her kids about her home village.
C. Plant sunflowers as their main crop. D. Follow the tradition of house painting.
D 25. B 26. C 27. A
根据第一段中“Francisco planned to change fields — to slash (砍) and burn a new area and leave the current fields to recover. Yet Hanna feared the fallow (休耕的) fields will be the same as they were.(Francisco计划改变土地——砍并烧毁一块新的土地,让现有的土地自行恢复。然而,Hanna担心休耕的土地会和以前一样)”可知,Francisco决定采用刀耕火种法开辟新田地,让现在的农田休耕,Hanna担心休耕的农田得不到改善,还和之前一样。故选D项。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Farmers have been using the slash and burn method to clear forests or woods, which involves cutting down trees. They then burn the remains and use the ash (灰) to enrich the soil. In the long term, slash and burn uses more land and can cause poorer soil and climate problems.(农民们一直在使用刀耕火种的方法来清除森林或树林,这涉及到砍伐树木。然后他们焚烧残留物,并用灰烬来肥沃土壤。从长远来看,刀耕火种会占用更多的土地,并可能导致土壤贫瘠和气候问题)”可知,刀耕火种可以肥沃土地,但也会占用更多土地,导致土壤更贫瘠,同时带来环境问题,即有利有弊。故选B项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“She asked why they were there. Hanna couldn’t believe her ears when Aunty described it.(她问他们为什么在那里。
根据最后一段中“The sunflowers grow wild and we use them as green nutrients before planting our corn crop. The harvest improves much! I want to thank you and let more people know this message.(向日葵生长在野外,我们在种植玉米作物之前用它们作为绿色营养物质。收成好极了!我要感谢你,让更多的人知道这条信息)”可知,Hanna和丈夫把向日葵用作绿色养分,收成提高了很多,她想让更多人知道这个耕种方法。故选A项。

C 29. A 30. D 31. B
根据文章第四段“To reach these conclusions, 18 undergraduate and graduate students trained in data collection surveyed up to 3,280 feet of roadside several times a week in Riverside.(为了得出这些结论,18名接受过数据收集培训的本科生和研究生每周在Riverside的路边进行多达3280英尺的几次调查)”可知,研究人员是通过进行实地调查来得出结论的。
根据文章第三段““A lot of people say it’s not their trash,” said Win Cowger, the first author of the study.(‘很多人说这不是他们的垃圾,’该研究的第一作者温·考格说)”以及“‘I want to refute that belief with the evidence we have, at least here in the Inland Empire.’(‘至少在内陆帝国,我想用我们掌握的证据来refute这种观念)”可知,很多人认为垃圾不是自己的,但考格想用他们掌握的证据来证明垃圾其实是这些当地人产生的,所以此处“refute”表示“反驳,与……相矛盾”,即想用证据来反驳这种垃圾不是自己的观念,与A选项“Contradict.(反驳,相矛盾)”为同义词。故选A项。
根据文章第二段“Most trash items end up on streets only a short distance from where someone bought them. In other words, the majority of litter comes from local sources.(大多数垃圾最终都会出现在离购买者不远的地方的街道上。换句话说,大多数垃圾都来自当地)”和第四段“‘Our study was the first of its kind to study local litter in such close detail and identified that humans were the primary means by which it moves from sellers to streets,’ added Win Cowger.(‘我们的研究是首次如此详细地研究当地垃圾,并确定人类是垃圾从卖家转移到街道的主要途径,’温·考格补充道)”可知,垃圾是由当地消费者产生的,并且人类是垃圾从卖家转移到街道的主要途径,所以应该怪当地消费者把垃圾带到城市里。
根据文章最后一段“‘In reality, it’s just as easy or even more accurate to say that if we didn’t produce the stuff in the first place, it wouldn’t get into the environment. It should not come as a shock that simply consuming less or even not consuming is also better for the planet. After all, every new item a factory pumps out requires some resources to produce.’(实际上,如果我们一开始就不生产这些东西,它们就不会进入环境,这么说同样容易,甚至更准确。减少消费,甚至不消费,对地球也有好处,这一点也不奇怪。毕竟,工厂生产出的每一件新产品都需要消耗一些资源)”可知,考格认为减少生产甚至不生产东西,它们就不会进入环境,减少消费甚至不消费对地球也有好处,毕竟每件产品的生产都需要消耗资源,所以考格可能会同意应该尽量少制造产品。故选B项。
D 33. C 34. C 35. B
根据第二段“In the recent research, researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences asked study participants to rate their level of pain from heat stimulation (刺激) while looking at pictures that were nostalgic-showing images of old cartoons, childhood games or candy-compared with another group of people who were given with modern pictures.(在最近的研究中,中国科学院的研究人员要求研究参与者在观看怀旧图片(展示旧漫画、童年游戏或糖果的图片)时对热刺激的疼痛程度进行评分,而另一组人则观看现代图片)”可知,两组研究参与者在研究设计中所给的图片信息不同。
根据第三段“After obtaining brain scans, researchers found that observing pictures that activated childhood memories was linked to participants reporting weaker feelings of pain. By managing their discomfort, rather than reducing the unpleasant stimuli, people can use nostalgia to rebuild their painful experiences.(在获得脑部扫描后,研究人员发现,观察激活童年记忆的图片与参与者报告的较弱的疼痛感有关。通过控制他们的不适,而不是减少不愉快的刺激,人们可以利用怀旧来重建他们的痛苦经历)”可知,怀旧心理能减轻人们的痛苦。故选C。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段““What nostalgia is the feeling of connectedness with other people,” Swets said, noting that the clues in many studies are designed to make people think of good times with family and friends. “So, people who are a little more avoidant of intimate (亲密的) relationship with other people, or more likely to prefer distance don’t get the same results of nostalgia.”(“怀旧是一种与他人联系在一起的感觉,”Swets说,他指出,许多研究中的线索都是为了让人们想起与家人和朋友的美好时光。“所以,那些更回避与他人建立亲密关系的人,或者更倾向于保持距离的人,不会得到同样的怀旧结果。”)”可知,Swets表明怀旧是一种与他人联系的感觉,而拒绝亲密关系的人不会得到同样的怀旧心理。故怀旧心理的效果是受人际关系影响的。故选C。
35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The researchers involved in the studies also have plans to use different age groups in future research to look into the impacts of more personal nostalgic clues rather than common nostalgia ones such as old music and movies.(参与研究的研究人员还计划在未来的研究中使用不同的年龄组来研究更多个人怀旧线索的影响,而不是像老音乐和电影这样的常见怀旧线索)”可知,研究人员计划在未来的研究中接触不同年龄组的受试者来研究更多个人怀旧线索的影响。

根据设空前“So, whether you want to create an inviting atmosphere or sell your house, improving your home’s exterior (外观) can boost its overall appeal.(所以,无论你是想创造一个诱人的氛围还是卖掉你的房子,改善你的房子的外观可以提高它的整体吸引力)”以及后面的小标题“Paint your front door(粉刷你的前门)”、“Consider house sign(考虑房屋标记)”以及“Make your porch (门廊) appeal!(让你的门廊有吸引力)”可知,这里是要引出改善房子外观的各种做法,D项“以下是一些令人惊叹的建议,可以帮助提高你家的吸引力。”
此外,C项“粉刷你家的前门并不是一项很大的投资”与空后的“and it will also be very easy to repaint in case you have gotten bored with the colour(如果你对颜色感到厌倦了,它也很容易重新粉刷)”构成并列的递进关系,符合语境。故选C。
根据下文“As a great way to create an instant curb appeal on a budget, you can make your home’s entry inviting and lively with the help of nicely arranged plants and a few well-chosen planters. Then, you can vary the container size and even arrange them on multiple levels for a more inviting look.(在预算有限的情况下,你可以通过精心安排的植物和一些精心挑选的花盆,让你的家变得诱人而充满活力。然后,你可以改变容器的大小,甚至把它们安排在多个层次上,以获得更吸引人的外观)”可知,此段主要讲在家门口放一些植物以及好看的花盆。A项“使用彩色花盆”符合语境。故选A。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

As the day of his visit approached, the kids began to get nervous. Early in the morning, they lined up in front of the school gate, waiting for his arrival with flowers in their hands. Never had I seen any of them so anxiously waiting to do anything. Seeing their smiling faces and reflecting on how they had improved since the correspondence, I felt confident that they would get along well with Dr. Denisar. A car pulled up in front of the school and out stepped a handsome young man. It was Dr. Denisar.
A whole morning had passed before we knew it. And it was time that Dr. Denisar should leave. Before he left, as was scheduled, we lined up and invited him to address us. Looking at the happy faces, he told the kids to be devoted to their studies and make contributions to the world when they grew up, adding that the friendship between them would be built up. Hearing his inspiring speech, I felt that I was right to begin the bond between my students and Dr. Denisar.
