Do you know the following facts in the UK? ·About 50% of all car journeys are just for fun. ·Over 80% people go to work by car. ·25% car journeys are under two miles. 5 ·70% car journeys are under five miles. WALKING & CYCLING Instead of using the car for short journeys, why not walk or ride a bicycle? Walking is a popular form of exercise—it’s healthy and it can save your money. If you work nearby, try walking or cycling instead of driving. Walking your children to school gives them valuable road experience. BUSES Bus companies are using new buses: some run on new fuels which produce less pollution; some have easier access for disabled and old people. There are special traffic lanes (行车道) to make bus journeys easier and more reliable. So do something to help solve the pollution problem—let the bus take you to work and your children to school. TRALNS All car journeys, long or short, can be hard work. For some trips it is wiser to take the train. Leave your car at home and walk, cycle or take a bus to and from the station. Train travel is fast, safe and comfortable. Train tickets are not always expensive; some are quite cheap at discount. 16. How many of car journeys are just for fun in the UK? A. 25%. B. About 50%. C. 70%. D. Over 80%. 17. The writer believes that _______ can give children valuable road experience. A. walking to school B. traveling by train C. taking new fuel buses D. having car journeys 18. What is the main purpose of this passage? A. To advise people to use cars less often. B. To encourage people to travel by train. C. To teach people how to use the buses. D. To tell people to obey traffic rules. B My sister Jessica was leaving a small shop. She was pushing a shopping cart(手推车) and trying to put the change into her pocket at the same time. While she was doing this, she dropped a quarter. Carefully she bent over to pick it up. To her surprise, an elderly lady walked towards her. With a quarter in her hand, the lady said, “Here’s the quarter you dropped, young lady.” Jessica replied, “Oh, I’ve found mine. That must be yours.” “Well, I think it’s yours. I found it on the ground back there,” she said. “It’s not mine. Why don’t you keep it I have plenty at home. I collect quarters.” 6 “Really?” Jessica asked, “What are you going to do with them?” “I have more than 9,000 quarters. I have always dreamed of driving across the country through the northern states and then down to California and back to New York. But now I’m too old to do that, so I think I’ll buy a TV with the money instead,” she explained. “Oh,” Jessica said, “Don’t give up your dream of traveling. I know someone who took the train and had a lovely trip. Why don’t you try that?” “Why did I never think of that?” The elderly lady said, sounding hopeful of this new idea. “I’ll think about that and look into it. Thank you for telling me.” My sister told me the story and said, “I just don’t want to see her giving up her dream and buying a TV! I’m glad I dropped that quarter. Perhaps what I said will change her life.” 19. What information can we get from the text? A. The elderly lady has collected over 9,000 quarters. B. Jessica was knocked over by a shopping cart. C. This story happened in the city of New York. D. The quarter that the elderly lady picked up was Jessica’s. 20. Why did the elderly lady decide to buy a TV? A. She thought she was too old to drive around the country. B. She was tired of traveling around the country by car. C. She thought a TV was much cheaper than a car. D. She was so poor that she couldn’t travel by car. 21. Which word best describes Jessica’s personality? A. Generous. B. Hard-working. C. Humorous. D. Helpful. 22. What may the elderly lady do after having a conversation with Jessica? A. Plan a trip. B. Have a medical check-up. C. Put her quarters in a bank. D. Write to Jessica to thank her. C Why don’t birds get lost on their long seasonal flights from one place to another? Scientists have puzzled over this question for many years. Now they’re beginning to see the light. Not long ago, experiments showed that birds rely on the sun to guide them during daylight hours. But what about birds that fly mainly by night? Tests with man-made night sky with shining stars overhead have proved that certain night- flying birds are able to follow those stars in their long-distance flights. One such bird—a warbler(刺嘴莺)—had spent its lifetime in cage and had never flown under a natural sky. Yet it showed an inborn ability to use the stars as guidance. When the bird’s cage was placed under a man-made star-filled sky during their travelling, the bird tried to fly in the same direction as that taken by its outdoor cousins. Any change in the position of the 7 man-made stars caused a change in the direction of its flight. Scientists think that warblers, when flying in daylight, use the sun for guidance. But the stars are also their most important means of navigation (导航). What do they do when the stars are hidden by clouds? The clever birds can find their way by such landmarks as mountain areas, coast lines, and river courses. But when it’s too dark to see these, the warblers just circle helplessly, unable to get their sense of direction. 23. The reason why birds don’t get lost on their seasonal flights _______. A. is known by everyone. B. is still unknown to human beings. C. has been known to scientists for many years. D. has only recently been discovered by scientists. 24. How do birds find their way in their long seasonal flights during the day? A. By using landmarks. B. By following the sun. C. By relying on their memory. D. By using the wind direction. 25. How did the warbler change its direction in the experiment? A. With its learning ability. B. With the help of other birds. C. With the help of the scientists. D. With the ability it was born with. 26. What do warblers do when it is too dark to see things? A. They land and rest. B. They lose their sense of direction. C. They keep looking for light source. D. They communicate with other birds. D Now more and more children seem to get lost in a sea of “digital technology (数字科技)”. As they use digital technology too much, they are losing their ability to do simple things. They can’t make toys themselves with hands or help mum and dad cook dinner. And worst of all, they seem to be losing interest in communicating with others. “I have talked with a number of teachers. They care about the increasing numbers of children who can play with computers or smart phones, but have few or no skills to play with making things,” said a teacher, Colin Kinney. “Many children can’t communicate with other children, but their parents are proud of their ability to use a computer or a smart phone.” Instead of playing with other children, more and more children are choosing to stay indoors and play on a tablet (平板电脑 ) quietly on weekends and after school. How can children grow up to be very good artists if they don’t learn how to use a paintbrush and develop their painting skill? How can children learn to make friends as they get older if they don’t learn 8 to communicate with others at a young age? Digital technology can be used for good or bad. We can use a stone to break a window or build a house. We shouldn’t blame the children. We should help them make right choices. It’s necessary for children to know how to use digital technology in today’s world, but what is more important, we should encourage them to develop social abilities, which will be useful to them when they grow up. 27. What’s the worst problem according to the first paragraph? A. Children can’t make things themselves. B. Children make too many friends online. C. Children don’t want to communicate with others. D. Children don’t like helping their parents cook meals at home. 28. According to Colin Kinney, which of the following is TRUE? A. Teachers fail to notice that children have few skills to make things. B. Many parents are very happy that their kids can use digital technology. C. Many teachers don’t care if children can use computers or tablets. D. Some parents are teaching their kids how to use digital technology. 29. What activity are more children choosing instead of playing outdoors? A. Using a tablet. B. Reading books. C. Engaging in sports. D. Playing video games. 30. What does the writer mainly want to tell us? A. It’s very important for children to have social skills. B. It’s very helpful for children to do some housework. C. It’s necessary for parents to learn to use digital technology. D. It’s difficult for teachers to make right choices for their children. 第二节(共 5小题;每小题 2分,满分 10分) 根据对话内容,从对话后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。 A: Good morning. What can I do for you, sir?
