There are three groups of English learners: beginners, intermediate learners, and learners of specialist English. Beginners need to learn the basics of English. Students who have reached an intermediate level benefit from learning general English skills. But what about students who want to learn specialist English for their work of professional life?
Most students who fit into this third group have a clear idea about what they want to learn. A bank clerk, for example, wants to use this specialist vocabulary and technical terms of finance. But for teachers, deciding how to teach specialist English is not always so easy. For a start, the variety is enormous. Every field from airline pilots to secretaries has its own vocabulary and technical terms. Teachers also need to have an up-to-date knowledge of that specialist language, and not many teachers are exposed to working environments outside the classroom. These issues have influenced the way specialist English is taught in schools. This type of course is usually known as English for Specific Purposes or ESP and there are ESP courses for almost every area of professional and working life. In Britain, for example, there are courses which teach English for doctors, lawyers, reporters, travel agents and people working in the hotel industry. By far, the most popular ESP courses are for business English.
( Now listen again, please. )

【答案】14.B 15.D 16.C
Here are some ideas that can add something special to your family reunion.
Whether your reunion is large or small, it’s nice to have a “Welcoming Address” to start with. It doesn’t have to be long — five to ten minutes, unless you have a really good speaker in the family. A few things you might put in a welcoming address, such as welcome everyone to the reunion, and thank them for coming, give a general outline of the activities, thank the people who lent a hand.
Next, Create Awards to be passed out to family members. Use your imagination and try to think up as many categories as possible, so that you can recognize the largest amount of family members that you can. Possible categories include the oldest and youngest family members, who traveled the least and greatest distances to attend.
Last, print a Family Book. Print a book of your family by asking family members for a picture to scan in and include in the book. Have a marker available for corrections and updates to the book for next year’s reunion, you know, babies and all.
( Now listen again, please. )
Questions:
11. What is the appropriate time length of a welcome address?
12. What is one of the benefits of creating awards?

M: Come and sit down, June.
W: Thanks, Mr. Johnson.
M: Now which courses are you working on?
W: I’m doing management studies along with English and German.
M: Aha, how is it going?
W: Well, it’s not going too well. I’m not enjoying the courses. And … Well, I’m not very happy.
M: All right. Let’s take things slowly. Tell me something about the courses.
W: Well, there is just so much work. At first, I thought to learn two languages will benefit my management studies. But I’ve come to realize that the management course is very difficult and at the same time I have to study English and German. It means I’m working all the time. And I never have time to relax.
M: What about your accommodation? Are you happy with that?
W: Not really. I mean the other students on my course are all living in the student dormitory.
So they see each other all the time. But I’m living in a rented room of a family house. I eat breakfast and dinner with the family. But I get lonely during the evenings and on weekends.
M: So, making friends is a problem, too.
W: Yes.
M: Okay. I’m going to give two suggestions.
W: All right.
M: First, German and English, which do you enjoy more?
W: English. And I find it easier, too.
M: Then I’d like you to go and see your German instructor, telling him that you want to stop attending German classes for the moment.
W: Okay.
M: Next, I think you should choose one student dormitory which you like best and apply to move in. Students are always moving in and out so that shouldn’t be a problem.
W: Thanks a lot for your advice.
M: You’re welcome.

空处引导非限制性定语从句,先行词是前面整个句子“visitors are flooding into the tourism destinations from all around the country”所表达的这件事,关系词在从句中作主语,指代前面整件事,用which引导,起补充说明的作用。故填which。
aim to do sth. 故填to supply。

故填the。
故填and。

Physicists concern themselves with problems that are profound. The origins of the universe, the nature of time, the composition of matter. And then, there’s spaghetti (意面). A spaghetti problem has puzzled physicists as famous as Richard Feynman, and has even been awarded an Ig Nobel Prize. At issue: “Why spaghetti doesn’t break into two pieces. Why it breaks into three pieces or 31 ”
Ronald Heisser, now a graduate student at Cornell, decided to explore the misbebavior of spaghetti for a(n) 32 math course he took at MIT.
Now, you may never have noticed it, but it’s nearly impossible to break a single, dry piece of spaghetti in half. It is claimed that Feynman noodled with the puzzle. And Heisser became similarly 33 with it.
"I’m a little bit of a person who 34 behaves in a way that is different from other people. So I thought it would be fun to try and break it into two. No one said you couldn’t do that. They just said why it doesn’t break into two."
In fact, the French researchers who were awarded the Ig Nobel prize in 2006 found that when spaghetti is bent 35 from both ends, it will crack near the center, where the stick is most curved. But this 36 break sets up a vibrational wave (震动波) that quickly breaks the stick further. So you get multiple fragments.
What Heisser wondered was whether he could somehow get around this vibrational “snapback” (迅速弹回) 37 And he found you have to do the twist. Heisser built a device for torqueing (向...施以扭动力) his spaghetti with precision and he observed the 38 process of breaking into small parts with a high-speed camera. He discovered that introducing a twist of around 360 degrees to the long strand allowed him to produce the 39 single pair of spaghetti pieces.
“Although the project was a bit of fun, I think it’s quite nice when you can find interesting physics and math 40 behind every day, sort of boring objects,” said Ronald Heisser.

Health care is a necessity for everyone, but not everyone has equal access to it. People in rural communities in particular face barriers to medical care that do not affect people in cities. This is true both in developed countries and in the developments and nonprofit organizations are working to address the 41 .
One barrier to rural health care is 42 . Rural communities are 43 far from population centers, which means most small towns do not have large hospitals, so rural people need to travel long distances to see doctors. Rural areas also usually lack public transportation, which worsens the problem.
Even if there is a hospital in a rural community, doctors often prefer to live in larger cities, so finding 44 can be challenging. Rural hospitals especially tend to lack specialists. Since each specialist only sees a small portion of the total number of patients, many hospitals 45 that they do not have enough patients who need the specialist to employ one. 46 , the patients who do need the specialist are forced to travel long distances or go without necessary treatment. In addition, in many countries, people in rural areas are more likely to live in poverty and struggle to pay for health care than urban residents.
A variety of developments may help 47 some of these problems. One significant one is telehealth—using technology such as video conferences to allow patients to speak with doctors in 48 . Using telehealth, doctors cannot run tests or examine patients up close. The technology, 49 , can be useful for mental health care, follow-up appointments after surgery and the monitoring of enduring health issues.
Sometimes if patients cannot travel to a clinic, the clinic will go to them. 50 health clinics are used in some areas to reach people who have trouble going to see a doctor. These traveling health units are often 51 than hospitals as well because they do not pay for as many facilities.
Small rural hospitals that lack financial resources sometimes consider 52 larger networks that have access to better technology. These larger networks can also help rural hospitals bring on board new staff.
Some countries try to motivate doctors to work in rural areas, offering slightly higher salaries or other benefits to those willing to 53 outside cities. They may also reward hospitals based on effectiveness in helping patients, 54 paying hospitals based on the number of procedures they perform. This could reduce costs for patients.
While the problem of rural healthcare is 55 , these initiatives may help provide necessary treatment for people outside major cities.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
Back in her twenties, Linda Park was all about fashion. But she also started noticing something disturbing: the fashion industry was seriously hurting the environment. As she worked as a designer, she was shocked by the mountains of unsold clothes, fabrics that would hang around for decades, and the harmful dyes (染料) dumping into rivers. It hit her — if she was going to make a real difference, she’d have to roll up her sleeves (袖子) and tackle fashion’s waste problem herself.
Every year, millions of tons of clothing are thrown aside, with almost half of it ending up in landfills. And here’s the kicker: most of it barely gets worn before it’s thrown away, thanks to the endless cycle of fast fashion. Park thought, “I can do better than this.” So, she pictured a new kind of store — one that wouldn’t just reduce waste but would also inspire people to make smarter, greener choices.
In September 2020, Park launched GreenThread — her sustainable fashion dream came true. The store’s special touch? It sold upcycled clothing and fabric made from waste materials. Customers could bring in their old clothes and trade them for store credit, giving the items a second life. GreenThread’s clothes were a mix of repurposed fabrics and eco-friendly dyes, proving that sustainable fashion can be stylish.
Now, GreenThread’s clothes aren’t exactly cheap. A T-shirt might cost $25, while the same one at a regular store could be $15. But here’s the deal: people love the quality, the durability, and the fact that they’ re supporting an eco-friendly brand. It feels good to be part of the solution, right?
When the pandemic (疫情) hit, it wasn’t smooth sailing. But Park wasn’t ready to call it quits. She switched to an online model and started offering virtual style consultations. The response was awesome, and GreenThread’s fan base grew as more people realized the benefits of shopping sustainably.
Park says the mission of her store goes beyond just selling clothes. “Each piece has its own story,” she smiles. “Customers can see how many lives a fabric has lived. It’s not just fashion; it’s a movement.”
56.________ inspired Linda Park to start her business.
A.A desire to promote eco-friendly dyes
B.The high demand for recycled clothing
C.The waste generated by the fashion industry
D.Her background in sustainable design
57.The phrase “the kicker” in paragraph 2 most likely means ________.
A.the person kicking the football B.something unexpected and surprising
C.the most exciting part of the situation D.the reason why fast fashion is successful
58.Which of the following best describes Park’s attitude towards her business?
A.Optimistic and practical. B.Carefree and relaxed.
C.Focused and cautious. D.Creative and determined.
59.According to the last paragraph, what do customers appreciate about GreenThread?
A.The unique story and mission behind each piece.
B.The emotional satisfaction of owning a unique piece.
C.The chance to see how many times the fabric has been reused.
D.The ability to trace the environmental impact of the material.
【答案】56.C 57.B 58.D 59.A
根据文章第一段中“But she also started noticing something disturbing: the fashion industry was seriously hurting the environment. As she worked as a designer, she was shocked by the mountains of unsold clothes, fabrics that would hang around for decades, and the harmful dyes (染料) dumping into rivers. It hit her — if she was going to make a real difference, she’d have to roll up her sleeves (袖子) and tackle fashion’s waste problem herself.(但她也开始注意到一些令人不安的事情:时装业正在严重损害环境。
根据划线词前面的句子“Every year, millions of tons of clothing are thrown aside, with almost half of it ending up in landfills. (每年,数百万吨的衣服被扔到一边,其中近一半最终进入垃圾填埋场)”可知,每年有数百万吨的衣物被丢弃,其中几乎一半最终被填埋。同时根据划线词后的内容“most of it barely gets worn before it’s thrown away, thanks to the endless cycle of fast fashion.(由于快时尚的无限循环,大部分衣服几乎没穿就被扔掉了。)”
根据第二段中“ So, she pictured a new kind of store — one that wouldn’t just reduce waste but would also inspire people to make smarter, greener choices.(因此,她设想了一种新型的商店——一种不仅能减少浪费,还能激励人们做出更聪明、更环保的选择的商店)”、第三段中“In September 2020, Park launched GreenThread — her sustainable fashion dream came true. (2020年9月,Park推出了GreenThread——她的可持续时尚梦想实现了)”以及根据倒数第二段中“When the pandemic (疫情) hit, it wasn’t smooth sailing. But Park wasn’t ready to call it quits. She switched to an online model and started offering virtual style consultations.( 当大流行来袭时,并不是一帆风顺的。
根据文章最后一段“Park says the mission of her store goes beyond just selling clothes. “Each piece has its own story,” she smiles. “Customers can see how many lives a fabric has lived. It’s not just fashion; it’s a movement.”(Park说,她的店的使命不仅仅是卖衣服。“每件作品都有自己的故事,”她微笑着说。“顾客可以看到一种面料经历了多少生命。这不仅仅是时尚;这是一场运动。”)”可知,Park表示她的商店的使命不仅仅是卖衣服,每件作品都有自己的故事。顾客可以看到一块布料经历了多少生命,这不仅仅是时尚,而是一场运动。这表明顾客欣赏GreenThread的是每件作品背后的独特故事和使命。因此,选项A“The unique story and mission behind each piece (每件作品背后的独特故事和使命)”符合题意。故选A。

The Pulitzers are American awards given within the United States for outstanding achievement in journalism as well as books, drama and music. Under these headings, there are 22 categories including online journalism, newspaper reporting, fiction, history, music, drama, poetry, photography and more. Recipients can be a news organization, an individual or a group of people.
Each of the first 21 winners receives a $15,000 cash prize and a certificate. The twenty-second prize, however, is the Public Service Prize, which is always given to a news agency. Instead of cash, the news organization receives the Pulitzer Gold Medal. The name of the year’s winner is on one side of the coin and the year is on the other. All winners are honored and awarded their prizes at an annual lunch party. The event takes place at Columbia University, which was originally tasked with administering the award, and usually occurs in May.
If it hadn’t been for a Hungarian-American named Joseph Pulitzer, the awards would never have come into existence. Pulitzer was born into a wealthy family in Hungary in 1847. He made his way to America and built a career in journalism. He developed a reputation as an ambitious and energetic young journalist. By 1872 Pulitzer had become a publisher, and six years later he owned a newspaper company. In 1883 he purchased yet another newspaper. He became known as someone who was not afraid to take a public stand against corruption (腐败).
After a successful career in journalism, seven years before his death, Pulitzer wrote a will, leaving $2,000,000 to Columbia University. The money was to establish a school of journalism at Columbia and a set of awards. Pulitzer’s desire was to raise the standards of journalism. He hoped the prize would act as a stimulus for journalists to work for excellence — then and into the future. Faithfully following Pulitzer’s instructions, Columbia University awarded the very first Pulitzer Prizes in 1917. Today these awards are considered some of the most distinguished prizes in America.
63.What can be known about the Pulitzers?
A.Their recipients all get cash prizes. B.There are 21 winners each year.
C.They are awarded worldwide. D.They go beyond journalism.
64.It can be inferred from the passage that Joseph Pulitzer _____.
A.was humorous and courageous B.was raised up in a journalist’s family
C.had a strong sense of justice D.sought a goal of producing wealth
65.Pulitzer established the prizes mainly to _____.
A.facilitate better journalism B.diversify ways of access to journalism
C.support Columbia University D.stimulate people to become journalists
66.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Pulitzer Prizes: Joseph Pulitzer’s Lifetime Ambition
B.Pulitzer Prizes: Some of America’s Greatest Honors
C.Pulitzer Prizes: Awards for Distinguished Journalists
D.Pulitzer Prizes: Annual Events at Columbia University

根据第四段中“He became known as someone who was not afraid to take a public stand against corruption (腐败).(他以敢于公开反对腐败而闻名。)”
根据倒数第二段中“Pulitzer’s desire was to raise the standards of journalism. He hoped the prize would act as a stimulus for journalists to work for excellence — then and into the future.(普利策的愿望是提高新闻业的标准。他希望这个奖项能够激励记者们追求卓越——无论是当时还是将来。)”可知,普利策设立奖项主要是为了促进更好的新闻报道。故选A项。
根据文章大意以及最后一段“Faithfully following Pulitzer’s instructions, Columbia University awarded the very first Pulitzer Prizes in 1917. Today these awards are considered some of the most distinguished prizes in America.(哥伦比亚大学忠实地遵循普利策的指示,于1917年颁发了第一届普利策奖。今天,这些奖项被认为是美国最杰出的奖项之一。)”可知,文章主要讲的是普利策奖的由来,普利策奖是美国新闻界的一项最高荣誉奖。今天,这些奖项被认为是美国最杰出的奖项之一。故这篇文章的最佳标题是“普利策奖:美国最伟大的荣誉之一”。故选C项。

How Young Americans Spend Their Money
Young people have always puzzled their elders. Today’s youngsters are no different; indeed, they are confusing. They have thin wallets and expensive tastes. They prize convenience and a social conscience. They want shopping to be personal. 67 As they start spending in earnest, brands are trying to understand what these walking paradoxes with conflicting features want and how they shop. The answers will define the next era of consumerism.
Their absolute numbers are impressive. The European Union is home to nearly 125m people between the ages of ten (the youngest will become consumers in the next few years) and 34. America has another 110m of these Gen-Zs and millennials, a third of the population. The annual spending of households headed by American Gen-Zs and millennials hit $2.7trn in 2021, around 30% of the total.
68 Forrester, a market-research firm, found that most users of “buy now, pay later” apps are around 20. Megan Scott, a 20-year-old student from London, speaks for many of her peers by admitting that, when shopping, she has no self-control—until the bill arrives.
The light-speed online world also appears to have lowered tolerances for long delivery times. A study by Salesforce, a business-software giant, found that Gen-Z Americans, who prefer to use their phones to pay for shopping, are the likeliest of all age groups to want their groceries delivered within an hour. 69
The Internet has also changed how the young discover brands. Print, billboard or TV advertising has given way to social media. Instagram, part of Meta’s empire, and TikTok, a Chinese-owned app, are where the young look for inspiration, particularly for goods where looks matter such as fashion, beauty and sportswear. 70 Such apps are increasingly adding features that allow users to shop without ever leaving the platform. According to McKinsey, six in ten Americans under the age of 25 had completed a purchase on a social-media site.
A.They desire genuineness while constantly immersed in a digital world.
B.TikTok’s user-generated videos can lead even tiny brands to speedy viral fame.
C.The lifestyle of the “moonlight clan” has made many young people feel overwhelmed.
D.Easy access to means of spreading payments may encourage spending money like water.
E.A heightened expectation of convenience comes with being raised in the age of Amazon.
F.These “always-on purchasers” often shift from a weekly shop to quicker fixes of everything from fashion to furniture.
【答案】67.A 68.D 69.F 70.B
67.由上文“They have thin wallets and expensive tastes. They prize convenience and a social conscience. They want shopping to be personal. (他们的钱包很薄,品味很贵。他们看重便利和社会良知。他们希望购物是个性化的。)”和后文“As they start spending in earnest, brands are trying to understand what these walking paradoxes with conflicting features want and how they shop. (随着他们开始认真消费,各大品牌正试图了解这些特征相互矛盾的“行走悖论”想要什么,以及他们的购物方式。)”可知,本句也和上下句一样,以“They”为主语,论述年轻人的特点,故A选项“They desire genuineness while constantly immersed in a digital world. (他们渴望真诚,同时不断地沉浸在数字世界中。)”能承上启下,符合题意。故选A。
Forrester, a market-research firm, found that most users of “buy now, pay later” apps are around 20. The Crucial Role of Early Childhood Environment
The environment we are in affects our moods, ability to form relationships, effectiveness in work or play — even our health. In addition, the early childhood environment has a very crucial role in children’s learning and development for two important reasons.
First, young children are in the process of rapid brain development. In the early years, the brain develops more synapses (神经元的突触) or connections than it can possibly use. Those that are used by the child form strong connections, while the synapses that are not used gradually disappear. Children’s experiences help to make this determination. The National Scientific Council of the Developing Child compares the development of the brain to constructing a house, stating, “Just as a lack of the right materials can result in blueprints that change, the lack of appropriate experiences can lead to alterations in genetic plans.” Because children’s experiences are limited by their surroundings, the environment we provide for them has a crucial impact on the way the child’s brain develops.
The second reason that the early childhood environment has such a strong role in children’s development is because of the amount of time children spend in these environments. Many children spend a large portion of their wakeful hours in early childhood setting. For example, a baby beginning child care will spend up to 12,000 hours in the program. This is more time than he will spend in both elementary and secondary schools. Children will typically spend another 4,000 hours in kindergarten through third grade classrooms.
Anita Rui Olds, a well-known environmental designer, believes that we should design our early childhood environments for miracles, not minimums. She states: “Children are miracles. Believing that every child is a miracle can transform the way we design for children’s care. When we invite a miracle into our lives, we prepare ourselves and the environment around us. We make it our job to create, with great respect and gratitude, a space that is worthy of a miracle!

There are two reasons why children’s learning and development depend on the early childhood environment. First, the environment where children get their experiences determines the way of children’s brain development. Second, compared to other periods, children spend more time in early childhood settings. So a better early childhood environment should be set for children’s brain development.
【详解】1 要点摘录① In addition, the early childhood environment has a very crucial role in children’s learning and development for two important reasons.②First, young children are in the process of rapid brain development.③The second reason that the early childhood environment has such a strong role in children’s development is because of the amount of time children spend in these environments.④When we invite a miracle into our lives, we prepare ourselves and the environment around us. We make it our job to create, with great respect and gratitude, a space that is worthy of a miracle!
3.遣词造句①Because children’s developments are created by education, the environment we provide for them has a crucial impact on them.②Many people spend a large portion of their wakeful hours in playing mobile phones.③Believing that every effort will create a miracle can transform the way we understand ourselves.
【点睛】[高分句型1]:Those that are used by the child form strong connections, while the synapses that are not used gradually disappear.
[高分句型2]:The second reason that the early childhood environment has such a strong role in children’s development is because of the amount of time children spend in these environments.

For centuries, one of the focuses of debate among linguists has been whether language impacts the way of thinking.
表示“语言学家争论的焦点之一”用one of the focuses of debate among linguists,作主语。 For centuries, one of the focuses of debate among linguists has been whether language impacts the way of thinking.
Close attention should be paid to languages that are dying out; otherwise, the linguistic diversity of this region will be greatly threatened.
Close attention should be paid to languages,“濒临灭绝的”处理成一个定语从句that are dying out。 Close attention should be paid to languages that are dying out; otherwise, the linguistic diversity of this region will be greatly threatened.
(turn out)(汉译英)
We took many preventive measures in advance, and as a result, the tourist destination turned out to be much cleaner and safer than we had imagined.
We took many preventive measures in advance, and as a result, the tourist destination turned out to be much cleaner and safer than we had imagined.
With the rapid development of social media, it is not difficult for freshmen to engage in college life.
的发展”用短语with the development of;“飞速”用形容词rapid;“社交媒体”翻译为social media;“某事对某人来说并非是困难的”用it is not difficult for sb. to do sth.,it作形式主语,真正的主语为不定式;“新生们”用复数名词freshmen;“融入大学生活”翻译为engage in college life。 With the rapid development of social media, it is not difficult for freshmen to engage in college life.

My video is named “Harmony in Our Community”.
The content of my video mainly shows the warm and harmonious scenes in our community. It includes the elderly chatting and laughing in the community park, children playing happily together, and neighbors helping each other. For example, when an old lady has difficulty carrying things, a young neighbor will offer to help immediately.
I choose these contents because they can best represent the harmonious atmosphere in our community. The friendly interactions between the elderly, children and neighbors are the foundation of a harmonious community. Everyone here is like a big family, caring for and supporting each other. This is what a harmonious community should look like.

Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A. B.C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context

Section C
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.

IV.Summary Writing (共10分)
