A big company wanted a clerk, so John went there. In the interview the director asked him a question.
“Who paid for your school?”
“My mother paid for it by washing clothes.”
Hearing this, the director asked John to show his hands. John showed a pair of hands that were perfect. The director said,“When you go back today, go and clean your mother’s hands, and then
see me tomorrow morning.”
When John went back, he happily asked his mother to let him clean her hands. However, his tears fell as he cleaned his mother’s hands. It was the first time he noticed that there were too many bruises (伤痕) in his mother’s hands. After finishing the cleaning of his mother’s hands, John quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother.
Next morning, John went to the director’s office. The director noticed the tears in John’s eyes and asked, “Please tell me your feeling.”
John said, “First, I know now what appreciation is. I would not be successful if my mother didn’t do these things. Second, by helping my mother, now I realize how difficult it is to get something done.” The director said, “This is what I want to be my clerk. You can get the job.”

Some people think that singing can lift our spirits. There are some other people who don’t think so. They don’t like singing and they say singing can never make them happy. I don’t agree with that. I think singing can make us feel good. Of course they can lift our spirits. Let me tell you more about that.
Some researchers once did some surveys and have proved that is true. Singing can bring a number of health benefits. If you sing with your friends, the effects may be even better.
John Lennon is a retired professor of vocal performance at Emporia State University. He says, “Singing is an inborn (天生的) need. Babies sing to themselves and they seem so happy. Like babies, when we sing, we feel so good and singing makes us feel happy. I like singing and I am happy every day.”
Music is a part of human nature. And singing is a form of expression that is understood by everyone. Some people say that music is like a kind of language. The language can show people’s opinions and attitudes to their life. Some songs can cheer people up when they are in trouble. Some songs can make people happy and excited. That’s why the Voice of China is popular among people.

You may have heard of the famous saying, “East or West, home is the best.” What does the word “home” mean to you? How do you say the word in French? In Chinese? In your language?
Although people usually know what the word means, it sometimes has no exact translation. It’s not surprising, because the idea of home is different from country to country, and from person to person.
A home is more than a roof and four walls. It’s the cooking, eating, talking, playing and sleeping that go on inside. And at home you usually feel safe and relaxed.
Homes look different in different countries. They also have different things inside. For example, in cold northern Europe, there’s a fire in the living room or kitchen and all the chairs face it. In the south, where the sun shines a lot and it’s more important to keep the heat out, there are small windows and cool stone floors.
We asked some people about their homes.
How often do people move house in your country?
“In my country many people don’t stay in one place for a very long time. They often move every ten years or so.” said Cherry, Boston, USA.
What are features (特征) of homes in your country?
“In Britain, even in town, there’s always a garden. We have separate bedroom sand living rooms. But we don’t often have balconies (阳台). The weather isn’t warm enough!” said Pat. Exeter, England.
61. The word “home” sometimes has no exact translation because_______.

B. no one knows what it is
C. it has different meanings in different countries
D. people can’t understand each other very well
62. According to the passage, at home, you can do everything EXCEPT_______.
A. making friends B. cooking and eating
C. playing and talking D. sleeping and relaxing
63. Why is it important to keep the heat out of the houses in southern Europe?
A. Because they want to breathe fresh air outside.
B. Because there’s a fire in the living room.
C. Because they wear heavy clothes all day long.
D. Because the sun there shines a lot.
64. From the fourth paragraph, what kind of homes people have depends on _______.
A. whether they are rich or not B. the climate (气候) they have
C. how old they are D. whether they live in the city or countryside
65. Which one of the sentences below is TRUE?
A. People in Britain seldom have balconies because it’s so hot outside.
B. Some Americans move house several times during their lifetime.
C. Homes look the same in different countries.
D. Houses in northern Europe have big windows and cool stone floors.

When shopping for clothes, my mother and I have always disagreed on what fits me well. To me, if it zips (拉上拉锁), it fits. My mom, however, usually says I need a bigger size.
When I was a teenager, I wanted to dress like my friends, but my body size made it impossible. When mom told me something didn’t suit me, or that I needed a bigger size, all I heard was that my body was wrong.
To avoid arguments, we stopped going shopping together. This continued until I got engaged (订婚) and needed to find a wedding dress. I could have just bought it alone, of course, but my mom is my favorite person to hang out with. The idea of looking for a wedding dress without her seemed as scary as taking her with me.
And so the day came. As I tried on a simple white dress, I saw tears in my mom’s eyes. “You look beautiful,” she told me. Nothing could have shocked me more.
This one didn’t zip up at the back and I did actually need a bigger size, but my mother didn’t say that. She just told me how beautiful I looked. At that moment, all those arguments we’d had while shopping in the past were laid to rest. We didn’t buy a dress that day. We decided to see more, which I would never have predicted. A few weeks and many shopping trips later, we found the perfect dress. And during those few weeks, mom and I also found the perfect fit for our shopping relationship.

C. the writer’s mom thought she was too skinny

A. Because she couldn’t find any friends to go with her.
B. Because her mom was very experienced in choosing a wedding dress.
C. Because a wedding dress is special and she liked hanging out with her mom.
D. Because they always had a great shopping relationship.
68. When the writer and her mom went shopping for the wedding dress, the writer felt shocked because _________.

B. none of the wedding dresses could zip up the writer’s back.

How to Protect Ourselves from COVD-19
The outbreak of COUID-19 has influenced our life and study a lot. The virus is very dangerous and it can be spread from person to person.
How can we prevent the virus? Here is my advice. First, the best way is to avoid being exposed to this virus. Second, we should wash our hands often and avoid touching our eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. What's more, we must wear a mask when we have to go out in public. Last but not the least, we should keep a healthy lifestyle. For example, we should have a healthy eating habit.
All in all I hope everyone can stay away from the virus and keep healthy.
