Usually, when a young man sees strangers in his property (房产), the interaction may not be that friendly. However, when Carlo discovered two elderly ladies using the outdoor chairs in his garden, he reacted unexpectedly. He walked over and asked them what they were doing there. Knowing they wanted to relax in his garden, he brought them two cups of delicious tea, and then he went back inside and observed the elderly women. They seemed to be having a good time in the nice weather.
Carlo took his cellphone and shot a heart-warming video. Then he posted it to social media. The video quickly spread, getting thousands of likes and comments from people all over the world. Many people praised Carlo for his generosity and for setting an example of how small acts of kindness could make a big difference. Some even shared their own stories of unexpected kindness, creating a wave of positivity.
To their surprise, a beautiful friendship grew from this chance meeting. The elderly ladies, who introduced themselves as Margaret and Helen, were deeply touched by Carlo’s gesture. They returned the next day with a homemade pie as a symbol of their gratitude. Carlo invited them inside, and they spent the afternoon sharing stories and laughter. It turned out that Margaret and Helen had been best friends for over 50 years and had recently moved to the neighborhood.
As days turned into weeks, Carlo, Margaret and Helen became close friends. The three started a weekly tradition of afternoon tea in Carlo’s garden, where they would chat, laugh and enjoy each other’s company. Carlo even helped them set up a small garden of their own, teaching them how to care for the plants.

7. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Kindness can make a difference.
B. It is necessary to care for strangers.

A new United Nations (UN) report says one-fifth of the world’s migratory (迁徙的) animals are at risk of disappearing. Animals that migrate move from one area to another at different times of the year.
The threats the animals face include habitat loss, illegal hunting, pollution and natural disasters. Many kinds of migratory animals, including songbirds, sea turtles, whales, sharks and others, move to different environments as the seasons change.
The UN report says about 44 percent of migratory species around the world are decreasing in population. In addition, about one in five of 1,200 species watched by the UN are at risk of becoming endangered, or completely disappearing.
These are species that move around the globe. They move to feed and breed and also need sites to stop along the way. Any habitat loss or other threats during their trips can make the animal populations fall. “Migration is important to some species. If you cut the migration, you’re going to kill the species,” said an expert.
The researchers examined existing data, including information from the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species. The list identifies wildlife across the world facing threats at present.
The report was presented at a meeting of the UN’s Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Attendees of the gathering are examining suggestions for conservation measures. They are also working to identify new species of concern. Susan Lieberman is vice president of the international policy at the Wildlife Conservation Society, a non-governmental organization. She said, “One country alone cannot save any of these species.”
The report found habitat loss affected up to 75 percent of the species studied. The report said this shows a big need for more connectivity between separated ecosystems. It pushes governments to take steps to avoid harming habitats and migration paths when building dams, pipelines or wind power equipment.
8. What does the UN report mainly show?
A. Most animals are disappearing. B. Migratory species are increasing.
C. Migratory animals face some threats. D. Most species face some natural disasters.
9. What does migration mean to some species according to the expert in paragraph 4?
A. Losing their competitors. B. A matter of life and death.
C. A lack of food and movement. D. Destroying their habitats.
10. What can we infer from Susan Lieberman’s words in paragraph 6?
A. It is difficult to identify migratory animals.
B. It is impossible to protect migratory animals.
C. Rescuing migratory species depends on policies.
D. Rescuing migratory species requires global efforts.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Human Activities Are Affecting Wildlife
B. International Meetings Push Animal Protection
C. Some Migratory Animals Are at Risk of Extinction
D. Many More Animals Are Regarded as Endangered Species
D
A newspaper company in the US says it will start using artificial intelligence (人工智能) or AI technology to write short stories. The company recently announced a plan to use generative AI to add short pieces of information to the top of each story. The company adds it will test the system later this year. Human writers and editors will look at what the technology produces and decide whether it meets the company’s standards for publishing.
Renn Turiano is a top official of the newspaper company. He explained that AI technology can be useful to reduce boring jobs performed by journalists He noted that the newspaper company will test its AI system slowly before it is permanently used.
Some news organizations launched (推出) the technology-based materials too quickly and experienced problems. This included cases where AI systems created errors in stories. Turiano said, “We’re not making that mistake.”
Earlier this year, two publishers — Men’s Journal and CNET — had problems with AI-created materials. In January, CNET reported that a number of stories written by AI had appeared on its website without being checked by humans. Many of the stories contained mistakes. In February, Men’s Journal published some AI-created stories on its website that also contained mistakes.
News organizations need to take their time with generative AI. It is advised that they should not use such tools to publish stories without any human involvement in the process.
The newspaper company recently announced that it was cutting 600 jobs. Some of the journalists still working there worry that AI will one day replace them. In early June, hundreds of the workers left their jobs for a short time to protest job cuts and low pay. The labor group that represents some of the journalists says the newspaper company’s use of generative AI is one of the main concerns. However, the newspaper company stresses the technology will not replace humans. Instead, it is designed to help an increasing number of employees be more effective and give them more time to do other valuable work. Journalists from the USA Today publication are examining test stories written by its generative AI system.
12. What does the underlined phrase “generative AI” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. AI that can produce information. B. AI that can keep editors company.
C. AI that can look after human writers. D. AI that can monitor a company’s system.
13. Why does the newspaper company develop its AI?
A. To test humans’ intelligence. B. To solve some math problems.
C. To reduce the journalists’ workloads. D. To manage some news organizations.
14. Why does the author mention Men’s Journal and CNET?
A. To show AI is a slow learner. B. To show AI can make mistakes.
C. To show AI is a perfect writing tool. D. To show AI can work as well as humans.
15. What does the newspaper company expect of the AI technology?
A. It will cut more jobs. B. It will benefit more employees.
C. It will replace human workers. D. It will help increase journalists’ pay.

All my life, I had been very confident about my choices and dreams. I never thought this would happen out of nowhere. After taking one of the entrance tests for Doctor of Medicine,I thought I had failed. But when the result came, I saw my name on the list. I was overjoyed. I still remember how happy my parents and uncle were. We received many congratulations, which made the moment unforgettable.
The admission period came, and my rank was not high enough for a free college. In addition, the real challenge was the financial aspect I had to accept the reality of the high costs for higher education. After careful thinking, I asked my father not to pay any money for my college education, because I thought it might be better to struggle for another year to secure a free spot than to see my family struggle financially. Indeed, I had mixed feelings then. I was happy that at least I was on the list, but at the same time, I was sad that I would miss the chance to go to college this year.
“Son, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Do you really want to give up this chance?” my father said seriously. I looked into his eyes, seeing the struggle within him. “I don’t want to, but I don’t want you to pay so much money, Dad. I can wait and try again next year,” I said. He added softly but firmly, “No, we’ll find a way, somehow.”
I remembered my parents’ hard work. They left early and returned late, supporting the whole family. Their hard work inspired me. I didn’t want them to worry about my tuition (学费). Life’s challenges made me stronger. I believed I could achieve my goal with effort.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
However, I was about to give up hope when my uncle came.

With the timely support of my family, I finally received the admission call.

A Most animals are disappearing.

A AI that can produce information.

故填an。
本句是非限制性定语从句,先行词是a continuous rise in relative humidity within the site,指物,关系词替代先行词在从句中作主语,用关系代词which。故填which。

这里考查want to do sth. 故填to check。
故填to。
故填was published。

I’m thrilled to share my effective English learning methods with you. My approach is a combination of practice and devotion. I start my day with listening to English. I spend 30 minutes each day reading English news, which has significantly improved my vocabulary and comprehension. Moreover, I practice speaking English with a language exchange partner twice a week. This has helped me become more fluent and confident in expressing myself.
As a result of these methods, I’ve seen an obvious improvement in my English proficiency. I scored higher in my recent English tests and feel more comfortable participating in class discussions. Hopefully, my methods can inspire you in your language journey!

However, I was about to give up hope when my uncle came. He entered with a determined look, holding an envelope. “I’ve managed to secure a sum of money for you,” he announced. Moved by my uncle’s gesture, my father said, “Your uncle and I will do whatever it takes to see you through this. Your education is important, and we won’t let anything stand in your way.” I felt a sense of gratitude and relief. It was as if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I could see a path forward to my college life.
With the timely support of my family, I finally received the admission call. “This is your chance,” my father said, handing me the phone. I accepted the offer, knowing I carried the support of my family. It was a victory not just for me, but for the strength of our bond. After hanging up, I looked around at my family. They let out a sigh of relief. “We did it,” my uncle said proudly. Then I knew that no matter what challenges life threw at us, we would overcome them, united by the unbreakable ties of family and the power of love.
