Do you know how the sounds of dinosaur roars in Jurassic Park are produced? A team of sound experts work behind the scenes to make sure a movie sounds as good as it looks. Take a look at how these sound experts do their jobs.
Production Sound Mixers
Production sound mixers are in charge of recording all dialogues and effects on set. These recordings are the basis for the rest of the sound in the film.
Sound Designers
Sound designers work with the director to decide on the overall feel of a film’s sound. This includes creating sounds that don’t exist in the real world. Sounds such as monster roars and spaceship zooms are made by combining several real sounds and sometimes changing the speed or pitch.
Foley Artists
Foley artists work in recording studios filled with thousands of props from flooring and fabric samples to shoes and Bubble Wrap. They use the props to recreate sounds like rustling leaves, creaking doors, and footsteps. On set, microphones don’t always pick up these everyday sounds. Film locations can also have unavoidable (不可避免的) background noise. So foley artists recreate and add the sounds to the film later.
Composers
The composer writes the background music or score for a film. Before writing the score, the composer meets with the director and other members of the filmmaking team to decide how and where to use music. Each choice affects the movie watcher’s emotions.
1. What is a sound designer’s job?
A. Record sounds on the movie set. B. Make sure we can hear the actors.
C. Handle the microphones and recorders. D. Make new sounds that aren’t in the real world.
2. Why do foley artists recreate sounds later?
A. All sounds are recorded. B. There is no background noise.
C. Microphones may miss sounds. D. Foley artists enjoy adding sounds.
3. Where is this passage most likely from?
A. A travel brochure. B. A music poster.
C. A film magazine. D. A science fiction novel.

On Dec.2, the annual mechanics (力学) competition was held at Beijing No.2 Middle School by the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, with about 50 teams gathering to “play” mechanics.
Two teams from Beijing No.2 Middle School participated in the competition. The morning event was to make a paper plane fly farthest using paper boards, rubber bands, clips, etc. Students needed to make a device to launch a paper plane. The farther the plane flew, the higher the score was. Li Ziyao, 16, from the school’s Team 1, said factors like plane shape, launch angle, and pivot affected how far it could fly.
“We first came up with a draft, did some calculations and decided to make a ‘gun’ to shoot the plane,” Liu Hengrui, 16, from the school’s Team 2, explained his group’s design. “However, we later found out that other teams were making their device very simple, which made us believe in the creativity of our design,” Wang Yinuo, also from Team 2, said. It was a fun experience putting theoretical physics knowledge into practice.
In the afternoon, students were given a four leaf clover shape. They needed to recreate the same shape with paper boards, pens and gravers. “The difficulty fell in the calculation part,” Dong Yian, from Team 1, said. After they got the right numbers, they needed to make a spirograph (万花尺) out of the boards to draw the shape. “Our group decided to make some serrations (锯齿) around the edge, but we later found out that it was not helpful, so we started over without the serrations,” Liu from Team 1 said.
Beijing No.2 Middle School eventually won the biggest prize. “I’m very happy with not only their impressive teamwork but also their creative application of classroom knowledge.” their instructor, Dai Wenjie, said, “This competition served as an excellent platform for developing creative thinking.”
4. What do we know about the paper plane from paragraph 2?

“Punk yangsheng” is a trend among young Chinese who try to balance their unhealthy habits with health practices from older generations. They seek both a healthy lifestyle and immediate pleasure, like drinking goji berry-infused drinks to make up for lack of sleep.
New tea brands offer a variety of yangsheng drinks for night owls. Chinese medical food is also being produced for health. These are popular because many people lead busy lives with long work hours, late nights, and unhealthy eating habits. In fact, traditional concept of Yangsheng is from ancient Chinese philosophy that includes healthy eating, exercise, and meditation.
However, experts doubt about the actual health benefits of these food and drinks. Can night owl drinks really reduce late-night side effects? Can bread truly improve health? A professional says, “Without clinical (临床的) data, it’s hard to tell if functional products work.”
Moreover, ingredients (原料) need to be carefully matched to an individual, which mass-marketed products can never achieve. Su Quanxin from the China Association of Chinese Medicine says,“Yangsheng is not about chasing (追赶) trends. It’s a scientific way of life and a positive attitude towards life. Methods, such as punk yangsheng are like saying ‘first kill me and then try to heal me’, which will do absolutely no good.” Some people even think these products as a “stupid tax” on young consumers.
Most people believe the trend is closely tied to widespread anxiety about the negative health effects of high-pressure modern life. According to research, over half of post-1990s youth face hair loss, vision decline, 40% are overweight with lower physical performance, and 30% have immune system issues. Most feel they’re not healthy enough. People who enjoy punk yangsheng just want to find “quick fix” solutions to the impact of late nights and hard work.
8. What does “Punk yangsheng” refer to?
A. An ordinary practice improving health. B. An idea attracting older generations.
C. A healthy diet solving sleep problems. D. A lifestyle balancing health and pleasure.
9. What’s the attitude of experts towards punk yangsheng?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Unconcerned.
10. What does the underlined words in paragraph 4 mean?
A. A fee for seniors’ ignorance. B. Extra money for useless health items.
C. A tax on health claims without proof. D. A government tax on health products.
11. Why is punk yangsheng gaining popularity?
A. People worry about health due to stress.
B. People hope to update traditional health practices.
C. People show increasing interest in health products.
D. People desire to find safe fixes to unhealthy habits.

Teenagers seem to get stuck in a bad mood really easily. Sometimes the bad mood feels like quicksand, and the harder you try to climb out, the more stuck you get! That was true for me as a teenage boy. Luckily, I had a good friend, Ollie, who helped me find a way out of my fussy (难以取悦的) feelings — doing sports to shift attention away from negative emotions.
One Saturday afternoon when I was 15, I was reading a book and had just come to the most thrilling part of the mystery when my little brother and sister rushed into my room.
“We made paper airplanes!” Indi shouted. “Aren’t they cool?” asked Tex, sending his plane directly into my head.
“Excuse me. I would appreciate a little peace and quiet so I can read,” I said.
“Ooh! I want to read!” said Tex.
Indi climbed onto my bed. “Can you read your book out loud?”
“I don’t want to read out loud.” I huffed (生气地说).
“Are you in a bad mood?” Tex asked anxiously.
Without saying a word, I got up, dragged myself down the hall, and flopped into the living-room chair.
“What’s up, little man?” asked my dad.
“Please leave me alone. I’m in a terrible mood!” I yelled.
Hearing the noise outside, mom came out from the kitchen, “Honey, we are just worried about you.”
I knew they were trying to help, but every time they showed care, I felt even worse! Seized by embarrassment and bad moods, I slammed the door and rushed out.
Standing under the tree where I often met Ollie, I felt like crying. Just then, Ollie stopped by and held a brand-new soccer ball in his hands. Immediately, Ollie sensed my distress.
“Hey, what’s up, buddy?” He asked.
I hesitated for a moment, torn between the desire to be alone and the urge to pour out my heart.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Seeing the concern in Ollie’s eyes, I decided to share my feelings.

【答案】范文
Seeing the concern in Ollie’s eyes, I decided to share my feelings. “Tex and Indi interrupted my reading, it made me really annoyed.” I said. “I understand how you feel. Why not play a quick game of soccer? Fresh air and a bit of exercise might do you good.” With encouragement from Ollie, I decided to give it a try. We grabbed the soccer ball and headed to the playground. We kicked the ball back and forth, laughing and shouting with every goal scored. The fresh breeze carried away my bad mood, replaced by a sense of refreshment. Time flew by and nightfall soon approached. We called it a day for our football game and said goodbye to each other.
Sweating but in a good mood, I was ready to go home. Awaiting me were my parents’ worried faces. Tex and Indi raced towards me excitedly upon seeing me return. “Honey, is everything alright?” mom asked anxiously. “I’m sorry,” I began, “I just needed time to think, but running away wasn’t the solution. The tense atmosphere was instantly melted away by kind care. As we gathered around the dining table, conversation flowed naturally. Laughter and joy filled the room. It dawned on me that it’s normal to struggle with bad mood, but there’s always a way out. Luckily, with Ollie’s help, I have found a great way to deal with my negative feelings — doing sports.

A. It needs certain shapes. B. It requires unique materials.
C. Its design affects how far it can fly. D. Its flight is not important in the competition.
5. What is special about Team 2’s design?
A They designed a device to shoot the plane.
B. They used rubber bands to launch the plane.
C. They made serrations on the edge of the paper board.
D. They put chemical knowledge into designing the plane.
6. Which adjective can best describe the students from Team 1?
A. Careless. B. Adaptable. C. Uncreative. D. Professional.
7. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Let creativity fly. B. Creating a new gun.
C. Make physics grow. D. Embracing mechanics challenges.

B People hope to update traditional health practices.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Seeing the concern in Ollie’s eyes, I decided to share my feelings.
