When I was 25, I dreamed of crown (皇冠). That was the summer I made the shortlist for a female novel prize. The winner was to be announced at a televised event. I was very excited and imagined myself on TV, A crown would be on my head. And then in August of that year, the prize was cancelled for some reason. I was disappointed but still full of hope.
To me, writing has always been an exciting act, especially the early moments of creation. This excitement inspired me through years of writing. I published several books, and my sense of achievement grew, yet I was also flooded with rejection letters. Several adult novels that I worked on for years came to nothing.
By the time I turned 40, these rejection letters began to eat away at my hope. I had always known that my books weren’t going to make me rich, but I couldn’t help feeling disappointed that my writing career hadn’t become something more. Actually, I worked less teaching hours, and sent my kids off to pre-school so I could write, but I felt so little had come from it. When my publisher stopped publishing books, sadness hung over me.
The following years were tough. I still wrote because I didn’t know what else to do. I stopped trying to believe that writing was going to support me financially and then an unexpected thing happened: writing became hopeful again. My younger dreams of being a famous writer have given way to more middle-aged satisfactions: the children who tell me they read my books and liked them, my students who say they saw me in a local magazine. Small things are a new kind of hope.
Recently, for my 50th birthday, I went to China with my friend. We were in a gift shop when a crown caught my eye. I bought it for myself, and wore it for my birthday party, just for fun.

25. According to paragraph 3, why did the author feel disappointed about her writing career?
A. Writing didn’t reward her with wealth. B. Writing took up too much of her time.
C. She made little advance in writing. D. She lost chances to teach her kids.
26. Why does the author mention the children and her students in paragraph 4?
A. To explain a new hope. B. To stress a good relationship.
C. To compare small things. D. To prove the popularity of her books.
27. The author bought herself a crown because .
A. she wanted to praise herself B. it represents Chinese culture
C. it would make her party special D. she has made peace with her dream
C
Have you ever made a mistake? Mistakes make us feel silly but everyone makes them. Even scientists, who often appear to know exactly what they are doing, are guilty of having accidents. The truth is, mistakes can often make science exciting because they can open your eyes to possibilities that you might never have considered.
Sometimes scientists discover a hidden purpose for an invention that already exists. In the 1940s, American engineer Percy Spencer worked on a radar magnetron (雷达磁控智) to find ships. While he was working, the machine was pointing towards his pocket due to his carelessness. After a while, he noticed that a chocolate bar he had put there had melted (m). Confused, he tried to see if anything else would melt, Spencer put an egg in front of the machine and after a few seconds, the egg exploded. Once he realised that energy from the machine could cook food fast, he designed a box to trap the radiation inside. From that the microwave oven (微波炉) came into being.
Ice lollies (冰棍) are an example of a delicious mistake. They were invented when Frank Epperson, a boy in the US, placed a wooden stick in a glass of juice. The juice froze around the stick and when he took it out the next day, he realised what a good idea it was to have something by which to hold a frozen sweet treat. He decided to call his creation a Popsicle.
Actually almost all inventors have something in common. You never know what you’ll discover if you try new things ― and it won’t always be what you planned. As long as you keep an open mind, you might find the next big thing.
28. According to the first paragraph, mistakes ________.
A. can push forward scientific development
B. can test if a person is silly or smart
C. relate closely to our sense of guilt
D. come from small daily accidents
29. What was a key to Spencer’s invention of the microwave oven?
A. He used a radar magnetron to find ships.
B. A chocolate bar melted in the machine.
C. The magnetron pointed to his pocket.
D. He exploded an egg inside the box he made.
30. What did Frank do to create ice lollies?
A. He left a stick in juice. B. He tasted a sweet treat.
C. He added sweets to water. D. He placed fruit in a glass
31. According to the author, what do most inventors have in common?
A. They keep an open mind about people around them.
B. They learn from their mistakes to work efficiently.
C They gain success through repeated failures.
D. They see possibilities in their mistakes.
D
Recently, Florida and California have both passed laws that limit the use of smartphones in public schools. This move is welcome as they reflect a growing awareness that it is unhealthy for young people to spend all day looking at phones. The laws limiting phone usage, however, tend to be broad, filled with exceptions. At the same time, private schools have pushed ahead with their own rules, which are typically more comprehensive (详尽的) than the well-meaning but ineffective laws made by state governments.
Half-hearted laws, especially those that place the burden (负担) on teachers, are almost useless. The enforcement (执行) of these laws often leaves teachers in challenging positions. For example, a teacher told a case where a parent listened to a classroom discussion through their child’s phone and immediately emailed a complaint about the lesson. Young people respond best to rules that are simple, clear and easy to follow. Plus, teachers should not be expected to announce the rules before every class. Strict limitations set clear expectations for students and help them work together better without overburdening already busy teachers.
The arguments against strict phone bans (禁令),on the other hand, are unpersuasive (没有说服力). Parents are concerned about locking up phones in case of an emergency, but classroom rules shouldn’t be designed around unlikely disasters. Students are also free to keep low-tech phones for emergency situations. A student from Oregon complained of having trouble finding friends in the lunchroom after her school banned phones. High schoolers who need to get in touch with mom and dad say they’re confused about the school’s old-fashioned rules.
The passing of the laws is a hopeful sign that schools are finally waking up to the dangers of smartphone overuse. The perfect treatment, however, is sadly lacking.
32. How are the rules made by private schools different from government laws?
A. They sound broader. B. They are ill-meaning.
C. They are welcomed by students. D. They produce better results.
33. In paragraph 2, the author mentions the example to explain that ______.
A. parents should stop complaining about children’s class
B. governments should set clear and direct phone bans
C. teachers should carry out strict enforcement of phone use
D. students should work together without teachers’ help
34. In paragraph 3, parents are against banning phones because of their children’s ______.
A. difficulty in acquiring low-tech phones B. trouble in making friends without phones
C. need to use phones in emergency situations D. confusion about schools’ old-fashioned rules
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the laws limiting phone usage?
A. Unclear. B. Objective. C. Confused. D. Supportive.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
If someone calls you ugly, you might start to wonder if it’s true. However, what matters most is how you feel about yourself, despite what other people think or say. If someone calls you ugly, find a way to respond. Work toward accepting yourself. Never hesitate to get support from an adult if you’re struggling to feel good about yourself.
Responding to the Judgments
____36____ Speak up for yourself by saying that the judgments are mean and don’t reflect who you are. For example, say, “I don’t know why you would call me ugly. Your opinion of how I look doesn’t change who I am.” You can also say, “You are not the judge of what is beautiful. I see myself as beautiful because I know I am a loving and kind person.”
____37____
Nobody can define (下定义) what pretty, normal, or beautiful are on the whole. As the saying goes, “Beauty lies in the eye of the lover”. ____38____ If you feel low about your looks or what people have said to you or about you, start building your own self-acceptance. See yourself as an imperfect person and learn to accept those imperfections in yourself.
Getting Social Support
Whether you need support or someone to share your inner thoughts, talking to an adult can help. ____39____They might lend a listening ear or give you some advice on how to handle situations when people try to hurt you. They might even help you deal with the person who called you ugly. Adults remember being younger and may be able to give suggestions based on their own experiences. ____40____
A. Accepting yourself.
B. Start small and take your own step.
C. And this is true for attraction as well.
D. This might be a teacher, parent or coach.

As I sat on our favorite bench in a park, memories of my best friend, Lily, flooded my mind ― our endless laughter, shared secrets, and the adventures that had brought us so close. But everything changed when Lily got the news that her family was moving to a city a few hours away. I was excited for her new life, but I couldn’t shake off the feeling of fear in my stomach. What if we drew apart? What if everything we had built together was forgotten? In order not to let that happen, I came up with an idea. “Let’s start keeping a diary!” I suggested excitedly, “We can write about everything on the same diary and mail it to each other every week! That way, we’ll always be a part of each other’s lives.”
For the first few months, the diary became our lifeline. We filled it with stories about our new lives, I loved hearing about Lily’s new school and friends, while she enjoyed updates on the challenges I met at school. But soon, things began to change, and our schedules got filled up with schoolwork and other stuff (事务). The diary entries started to reduce, and our phone calls became less frequent. One evening, when I saw a picture from one of our last adventures ― a photo of us laughing so hard together ― inspiration hit: we could plan a weekend trip! I quickly called Lily, suggesting a camping trip for us to explore a new place together. To my excitement, she immediately agreed. We searched the key steps to set up a tent, insert (插) the tent poles into the ground, pull the tent up and straighten it out.
When the day finally arrived, I put the diary in my backpack and headed to the camping place ― a cute little park with tall trees and a quiet lake. When we arrived, the sky was clear blue, but it wasn’t long before dark clouds appeared.
67. What is the theme of the story? Answer: _______
A. A camping trip separates two friends.
B. True friendship beats long distances.
68. What is the key clue of the story? Answer: _______
A. A diary written by two good friends.
B. A cute little park with trees and a lake.
69. 注意:1. 续写词数应为 120个左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As we began to lay out our tent, the first drops of rain fell.

With the tent finally ready, we got in and reached for the backpack.

W: Terribly sorry. Let me figure out what happened. Could you please tell me your room number?
M: It’s 502.
W: Oh, I’m really sorry. Room 502 is a double room, and we have a family room with a large bath on the first ground. To make up for our mistake, we provide the room with a yard.
M: Nice! Thank you.

M: Hi Sarah! I’m working on history since I have difficulty understanding key themes in the book. How about you?
W: I’m focusing on math because I missed out on several classes.
M: Time is running out, and I’m really stressed out between projects and revision.
W: I get how you feel. What I find useful is setting a timer for about 30 minutes of study followed by a 5-minute break. It keeps my mind focused.
M: I like listening to music while studying, but sometimes it lowers my efficiency. I will try your approach next time! By the way, how do you remember important notes?
W: I mix up different studying methods. For example, I like the environment in this coffee shop where l can discuss with friends. Every night, I go over notes again before going to bed.
M: Good idea Let’s go to the library tomorrow. We can take turns to ask questions and review together.
W: That’s fantastic!

24. What can be learned about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. She achieved a lot in adult novel. B. She took pride in being a YA writer.
C. She attended a novel competition on TV. D. She got a crown as a prize for the winner.
A To explain a new hope. B. To stress a good relationship.
C. To compare small things. D. To prove the popularity of her books.
27. The author bought herself a crown because .
A. she wanted to praise herself B. it represents Chinese culture
C. it would make her party special D. she has made peace with her dream
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. A 27. D

Actually, almost all inventors have something in common. You never know what you’ll discover if you try new things ― and it won’t always be what you planned. As long as you keep an open mind, you might find the next big thing.

A. Unclear. B. Objective. C. Confused. D. Supportive.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. B

Whether you need support or someone to share your inner thoughts talking to an adult can help.

Glad to learn that you are organizing a friendly sports match in your class, I think soccer is a good choice.
Several reasons account for my recommendation. First, as a popular sport in UK, soccer would definitely appeal to most English teenagers. Second, soccer is a sport requiring teamwork, which is of great benefit to our sense of cooperation.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
With the tent finally ready, we got in and reached for the backpack.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】67. B 68. A
69. ①. As we began to lay out our tent, the first drops of rain fell. The ground quickly turned muddy, making it hard to keep our balance as we worked with the tent. I struggled to insert the tent poles into the ground while Lily pulled the tent up. Water splashed around our feet and our coats got wet. With great efforts, we straightened it out, “This isn’t how I imagined our camping trip going,” I joked. We couldn’t help laughing at how silly we looked. With each tug and zip, the tent took shape. (80 words) ②. With the tent finally ready, we got in and reached for the backpack. We pulled out our diary, and began to read through the entries we had written during our time apart. Each story transported us back to our precious moments: the adventures we went through together and the challenges we faced on our own. Each story drew reminding us of our shared histories and dreams. As we added a new entry about the unforgettable camping tour that day, I realized how much stronger our friendship had become despite long distances. (80 words)
